That was impossible to show the injured Roman soldiers with Total War Engine, I know that part would've been better but...:) For the next one, a Bannerlord cinematic battle video is coming! Also, random bit of info, Crassus didn't actually have his men form a testudo at Carrhae, hence why the horse archers did so much damage.
Years later Mark Anthony got stuck is pretty much the same situation and DID form testudo. He managed to retreat back into Roman territory with about a third of his force left. Not much better, but it helped I guess xD

      Saludos 👍

    • @dpeasehead
      @dpeasehead 4 года назад +60

Yes, that's why Carrhae will always be one of my favorite battles. Crassus forgot that Rome had beaten Spartacus only when its leaders stopped underestimating him and his lieutenants and called the overseas armies home to bring overwhelming force to bear. Surena tricked Crassus into believing that he only had to deal with a short lived arrow storm instead of an all day deluge. And contemporary accounts stated that the Parthians composite bows penetrated everything; including chain mail armor, and that the arrows even pinned the Romans' shields to arms and their feet to the ground.

    • @SponsorShort

@ what could Caesar do in such a situation? Romans had lost the battle before it even begins. When Crassus trusted Parthian double agents Ariamnes and Agbar and rushed into the flat part of mesopotamian desert which was perfect for cavalry maneuvers. Roman legions were adapted to fight in Europe, not middle east deserts. They were too slow, too stationary and the only fighting style they were trained for was hand to hand combat. They didn't even know you could destroy your enemy without even touching him. They learned this in hard way and I doubt even Caesar could do any better in desert fight with troops who couldn't even ride a horse, let alone fight on it or shoot. Caesar had no chance and that was the exact reason Cassius,a veteran of Carrhae, killed him,to spare Rome another humiliating defeat.

Imagine how utterly terrifying it must have been to be part of that Roman formation.
You know you’re overstretched with no hope of escape, and gradually you start to realise that your armies tactics and abilities are completed unsuitable for the battle at hand. Your friends are dying all around you and your commanders - fierce men you have seen remain steadfast in tens of battles - are starting to waver and panic. You hold your ground as best you can and wait to die, because there’s absolutely nothing else you can do.

Archers were recruited from the family while very young and trained for what was considered a highly regarded skilled profession. When captured, they had their middle fingers lopped off so they would no longer be able to pull a bow. When the armies met, they were at close range to each other and a lot of shade was thrown back and forth. The biggest one of all was the archers raising their hands to show their fingers intact. What everyone knows today as flipping someone off with their middle finger came from these archers. Now you can take this to your local bar and look like a genius.

Beautiful ! Thank you for such a great work. It makes me proud as a Persian. we had many wars with Romans in history but they were truly out smarted in this war. The hail of arrows were merciless and had paralyzed them. Parthians are also known as Ashkani in history of Iran and they were the masters of maneuver. They were swifter than any cavalry. They could fire the arrows at a gallop not only galloping towards the enemy but also even as they galloped away from the enemy, they would turn around and they could fire back which is shown very well in this clip.

This is very good indeed. Keep in mind though, the horse archers were lightly armored - if armored at all. I can’t be sure if cataphracts were armed with bows or if the notion of “cataphract archers” was even a thing in that era of Parthian rule. What I’m sure about is that the horse archers were supposed to implement hit and run and feigning rout tactics and for that matter, mobility was the top priority; hence the light armor. Cataphracts were shock troops, deployed to instill fear in enemy ranks and break their formations. To the Parthians’ surprise, this tactic didn’t have much of an impact on the Roman infantry as they were professional soldiers. They did however use the heavy cavalry to disrupt Roman testudo formations and support horse archer arrow barrage.

Ruben Roque, that was under Sassanid reign, the dynasty that followed the Parthian empire. The king Shapur I captured Valerian, a Byzantium emperor and pour molten gold into his mouth. At Narqsh-e Rostam, in modern day Iran, in the fars province, you will find a massive sculpture depicting valerian at the foot of Shapur I. I’ve been there and I’ve seen it.

    • @32sadi
      @32sadi 3 года назад

1- There is no reliable historical report on Parthians having done that to Crassus.
2- History says that after being defeated in Edessa battle, Valerian was captured and up on signing a treaty Shapur allowed him to go back to Rome. Wikipedia’s account that Valerian died in Iran, is not supported by reliable sources. So, filling his mouth with molten gold could not have happened.

They were great warriors and talented and well trained archers
