    My fave running gag of this show was every time he'd meet a guy he'd shake his hand, and they'd zoom in to only show two hands shaking. The zoom in had the same two hands every time, no matter whose hand he was shaking.

    • @mebeme007
      @mebeme007 Год назад +3

      They weren't always the same two hands.
      Sometimes it would show a females hand, if he was shaking hands with a bloke. Or vice versa. Sometimes there'd be a darker skinned hand as well.
      But that was one of the funniest moments of the show, I have to agree.

    Russell Coight is a classic series from Working Dog Productions, the group that brought us the funniest Aussie movie ever, The Castle.
    They've made a LOT of great comedy TV too, starting with The DeGeneration (a sketch show) in the 80s, and The Late Show ( a Saturday night variety show) in the early 90s. They've since gone on to make shows like Frontline (a Current Affairs satire show), The Hollowmen, Utopia (both Political satire) , Thank God you're here (Improv) and The Panel.
    They've been a huge hit on Radio over the years, starting with The DeGeneration Morning show on Triple M Melbourne in the 80s and 90s.

The Russell Coight character is a send-up of iconic bushmen like Harry Butler, whose show In the Wild ran in the 70s, and Les Hiddins, whose show Bush Tucker Man ran in the 80s or 90s I think. Les was a former army major and became quite a celeb through his show. Glenn Robbins, who played Russell Coight, is also hilarious in Upper Middle Bogan. Not sure if you are aware of this but Tony Robinson did a program in the 80s or 90s where he was searching for the true King of England because there was some dispute about the legitimacy of someone back in the 1400s who was born outside of wedlock. He did eventually trace the Plantagenet linage ( Richard the Lionheart bloodline) to some tiny South Australian town where the descendants of the Plantagenets lived since the 1950s. Oxford educated and well aware of his clim to the throne, wasn’t interested in the least. He had turned his back to his heritage and loved the simple life of the Australian outback. His daughter’s were unaware and couldn’t believe it, one of the girls had a young male child who was a declared a Prince by Robinson.
    That should amuse you , if you look up “the true king of England” with Tony Robinson you will find it.

    Fyi, in Australia “Coight” is slang for arse.
    Another outback show worth a look is the Bush Mechanics.

    I remember when i first saw this show, and didn't realise it was a comedy. I started watching it just expecting the usual traveling adventure show, then these strange things just kept happening. Took me too long to realise it was satire.

    I’ve drove across Australia a couple times. Been through the outback. Depending on the time of year and where you are it can be nice and tranquil as you put it but honestly 90% is a legit barren wasteland when you’re in remote areas. You’d never wanna be stuck there

    The taking a nap after driving for hours is a legit thing. My dad does it often as he often has to drive several for his work and I live an 8 hours drive away from my parents so when he’s driving with my mum they just swap over for a bit.

    Russ is a satire of older shows than Steve Irwin more about exploration of the country - such as the Leyland Brothers and Alby Mangles

    8:31 I think this show was originally intended to parody and old show from the late 80s/early 90s called Bushtucker Man. Coight dresses like him and does all the survivalist stuff, but always ends up with something going wrong, where the original show was serious. I always felt that Irwin was a bit cringe compared to Bushtucker Man, but different focus, I guess.

    Do the English have the same word coight? if so you probably know what it means! Only Glenn Robins would use that word now, a lot of younger people would not know even know what it means, but to us older people, it puts a smile on our faces. Good one Glenn
