    "The Americans might shoot you"
Is a reference to some British soldiers killed by American soldiers "friendly fire."

@@DiZh0 Well there were 2 particular nasty ones - and was largely due to a massive moment of incompetence on the Americans behalf. Not a generalization - however on those 2 occasions it's just what happened. You can still find a lot of material about it if you google it...
26 February 1991: Six British soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and ten members of the attached Company of Queen's Own Highlanders were killed and further three injured after their Warrior armoured vehicles were hit by Maverick missiles fired by two U.S. A-10 ground attack aircraft.

So this something I haven't seen anyone else explain the context of before but the "Cheese eating surrender monkey" bit came from the news that America had announced their green car of the year for the year that episode aired and, while the car was kinda funny as the green car of the year was a huge Chevy Taho hybrid that did 30 mph, It was the judges that got the most attention as the judges were Jay Leno (Who had previously been a guest on top gear and at that time had such a vast amount of old sports car and otherwise, it took 3 A4 papers to note down them all.), Carroll Shelby (The man who put the Ford V8 in the AC Ace to create the AC Cobra and was responsible for putting the supercharger in the Mustang) and the final judge, Jean-Michel Cousteau, the son of famous enviromentalist Jacques Cousteau. The bit comes in when Jeremy said he'd loved to be in the discussion as he could just imagine Leno going "Shut up, you cheese eating surrender monkey" followed by Richard think that Jean was all happy when he was about to enter that meeting and being a judge for an environmentally safe car but his co judges were quote "Drinking petrol and supercharging their chairs." Tl:dr: Just three judges. only 2 of them are petrol gods and one is enviromentalist judging the least harmful car.

The other side tended to be wailing, ‘… but I thought he loved me. This programme was a real institution over here in the 90s-10s. The 3 of them stayed the same, and used offensive humour throughout the show. I think what happened was that the World changed around them, and the show was considered to be "a bit much" for current sensitivity. The "official" reason it was axed was because Clarkson had a fight with someone involved in filming/managing the show, but a lot of us feel it was cancelled because it used old-fashioned but now-offensive humour. It just didn't fit the "current climate".

Also TG was popular everywhere, UK was not it's main target and PC culture existed only in USA and UK back then and well still mostly do with Scandinavian countries in mix. You have to remember that these clips are taken from episodes spanning like almost 15 years. These 3 became the regular hosts in the very early 2000s and didn't leave until the last 5 years (I think, maybe a little over). So we are looking at jokes made upto 20 years ago and in the context of that time.
Some are not good regardless of the time (Clarkson SUPER UNNECESSARILY using the N word in that kids "Eenee, meenee, minee, mo" thing... use ANY other word dude, wtf?!?). And they should be called out for this. But many of them are just edgy jokes, the kind that have slowly been taken off our TV sets over the time since Top Gear started.
Is this a good thing? No, not at all for me. I am always of the opinion that if something offends me... I turn it off and move on with my life. You, and you alone, are responsible for what YOU get offended by. It is IMPOSSIBLE to never offend anyone, because everyone's threshold for offence is different. Why should my threshold be taken as the be all end all? Unless it's OBVIOUSLY offensive regardless, like using the n word I guess, then maybe it should be addressed.
But we need to toughen up a little. We've made MASSIVE progress in terms of dealing with the worst aspects of people. We've tackled the big things like overt racism, homophobia and the like. But we can NEVER fully eradicate these things, because it gets to a point where we are all on board about not using n word etc, we've all took on board these things and now it keeps getting pushed further and further. When does it stop? Because I guarantee you can find at least 1 person who is offended by anything really... We need to stop and say like "one person complained, carry on... one hundred thousand people complained, let's look into this". And I mean AT THE TIME, not 1 complained then it made the news and then after the face all these people complained about something that at the time they didn't have as much of a problem with. We need the people to complain on their OWN behalf, not everyone jump on it to complain on THEIR behalf.

Regarding the N-word furore, someone's already mentioned that those of us of a certain age were taught it as a nursery rhyme with no comprehension that it was offensive, however, on to the "controversy" itself.
In the broadcast episode Clarkson blatantly mumbled it on purpose, so all you heard was "uh-uh", but all those who chose to be offended were like, "He clearly mumbled the N-word!" not realising how ridiculous they were being. Of course, they weren't satisfied with being shown up as idiots so they went searching and found footage of other takes where he didn't mumble it quite as well, then kicked up a stink about that instead.
Anyone with common sense was going, "So, you're complaining that they broadcast the version which did the best attempt at not saying the word, using worse takes as evidence that they could have said it more clearly but didn't?"

This - the original version of Top Gear - ended because Jezza once lost it after a hard day of filming and allegedly biffed a BBC producer when there was no hot meal ready for him. Now the three - Jezza, the hamster and Mr Slow aka as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May - do car journey related specials on Amazon Prime. Plus they do their own shows on Prime. James May did a cooking show introduced as, ‘I’m James May and I can’t cook’.
Jeremy bought a farm in the Cotswolds a few years ago, as you do if you have a few £m lying about. It’s a lovely area. Prince Charles has a house around there. Jezza’s farm manager retired and so Jezza decided he’d give farming a go as it can’t be that hard. It kind of started off with Jezza vs James and Richard having a bet whereby if Jezza lost the bet the other two could blow up his house. He lost. They blew up his house. The neighbours weren’t all that pleased - the noise for one - and he got a rep as a mad man, the result of which his planning applications for a farm shop and restaurant have suffered impairments. As you can imagine, the world and his wife turned up for the opening of the farm shop. Queues were huge. Cars got stuck in mud. His girlfriend (yes I was surprised), an ex-model, runs it. She’s very nice but pretty much left to her own devices. One of the restrictions on the planning permission was that the stock must come from within a few miles from the farm. His GF stocked the farm with mangos or pineapples, can’t recall which now. A few thousand miles away from the farm.
Typical Jeremy, he bought a Lamborghini tractor that had zillions of gears, went like a bomb but all the instructions were in ? German and the tractor was too big to fit through the farm gates and too tall to go in the barn. Plus, the British attachments wouldn’t fit on the hook thing on the back of the foreign tractor.
The star of the farm show is Kaleb who helped the previous farm manager and is now stuck with Jeremy. He’d never travelled further than the next town before his met Jeremy and didn’t see the need. In view of this, it’s surprising that he gives as good as he gets and Jeremy doesn’t get away with much. Jeremy never follows instructions despite knowing nothing about farming. Kaleb’a view of Jeremy’s ploughing skill was, “That’s about as straight as a roundabout’. Kaleb wanted to put up a sign saying the ploughing wasn’t his work as Kaleb has a farm contracting business.
Gerald is another star. He does ploughing and odd jobs, like repairing the stone walls. He’s a lovely man but you can’t understand a word he says as he has a very strong local accent. Jezza has whole conversations about what jobs to do next in the farm when he’s left none the wiser than when he started.
The farm has made a very little profit in a year - under £200. Can’t remember exactly. Anyway, it’s hilarious. You’d enjoy it.

The 'Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe' rhyme does have the 'n' word in it and it dates back to the early 19th century.
Obviously the world has changed since so it was just Jeremy reciting the words as they were.
    From an article:-
"Eenie, meenie, minie mo. Catch a nxxxxx by the toe. If he hollers, let him go. Eenie, meenie, minie mo." An alternate version "Catch a negro by his toe/ If he hollers make him pay/Twenty dollars every day."
The meaning: The meaning of this rhyme is rooted in the slave trade. There's an idea that it comes from slave selection or a description of what white slave owners would do if they caught a runaway slave. It was actually a part of a 2004 lawsuit against Southwest. The black plaintiffs in that case sued the airline for discrimination because a flight attendant had used the rhyme while urging them to take their seats. The jury did not side with the plaintiffs, and though they appealed, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the initial ruling.

Keep in mind many countries didn't use the N word like the US did decades ago. This is a word most people heard on old US movies or in US black comedies where they use the word to eachother. As a result even though other countries understand that it is a derogatory word, it isn't as taboo to say because we don't have the US style historic treatment of people who's ancestry is from Africa. Even in Australia while we have indigenous peoples, the N word doesn't apply to them (this is where we have our own taboo words I suppose) but I have heard them calling eachother that...probably because of movies and they think it'scool or something.

Actually - Clarkson didn't say the N-word. That is a takeout where you can actually hear him realize in the middle of the rime (which used to be a children's rime in the UK) that it wasn't OK so he goes "nurnmmmm" or whatever - ACTUALLY actively not stopping himself from saying what the old rime was - and then reshot it using "teacher" instead of the N-word in the clip which was broadcast. Also the "sloap" as a "slur" on Asians is kinda the "least offensive" one - and is meant as a "haha it's the same word as something which has an incline" - joke. It's sort of in the same category as calling an Irish person a potato... Yeah sure it's a "slur" but it's literally not that offensive. The Mexican clip with Hammond was however a bit more over the line. It seemed actually to be partly malicious... however afterwards they did go to the Mexican embassy and apologized for it, since they them selves could see it was over the line when they rewatched it - and the Mexicans repayed the favor by drinking them under the table in tequila - which is pretty epic :-D
That can happen when your "main stick" is being edgy... sometimes it goes a bit too far.

Oh fuck me sideways when they went to a caravan site with their own monstrosity creations & Clarkson set fire to his kitchen, I near pissed myself laughing, but to see that clip on it's own, I have seen, don't find it funny outside of the episode, or their own convertible in an automatic carwash, & they supposedly wreck the carwash, again, clip, not funny, but the episode, of fuck me, the Morris Minor episode, wtf was that hahaha.

Can’t remember Clarkson’s comment verbatim but wasn’t the complaint from the ambassador about how Clarkson said they hadn’t a good Olympic team because all the best runners and jumpers had made it over the Mexico border Wall into America.

No, not at all. It wasn't that funny as it rang true for the most part.

I have to say, I do'n't mind edgy jokes, but I've always thought the Mexican stuff was going a little far.

Yeh old top gear where Jeremy Clarkson, James and Richard Hammond. They had no filter. They can say wat ever they want and not get in trouble for it.

When the world has no place for Top Gear or Ricki Gervaise or Jimmy Carr, then I want no place in that world. Lonf live offence!

But the eeny meeny rhyme should say 'nipper', not the 'n' word.
You've caught a nipper on your toe because you dipped your foot in the water.
It doesn't make the slightest sense 'the other way'.

The N-word thing was actually an outtake, IIRC, that some members of the press found out about.

Describing something as “offensive” isn’t any kind of valid criticism.

It's a very old and still popular when I was a child children's rhyme that was used as a way of choosing the odd one out at school that happens to have the line "catch a n##### by the toe" in it. Jeremy used it to decide which car in the clip but left the n word out. But because everyone of our age knows the rhyme people decided to get offended even though he never said the word because we all knew what it was if you see what I mean. Pathetic if you ask me especially as certain people can and do use the word still all the time but you just cannot be white and even not say it !

That stope and rhyme clip were not offensive at all... Only to people with bad intentions who change context and words.

i really don't get it he says offensive things about literally everything and everyone but the line is the N word? no just like u said yourself previously u dson't have to take it offensive, the N's call eachother N all the time so fk that its just as funny as anything else in here
