      for real though, Minecraft development history is full of missing versions shrouded in mystery but 1.0 itself is one of the least mysterious ones because we literaly saw all of the prototype and cut content through the 1.9 beta releases. 1.0 itself has two pre release versions called "Release Candidates" which are both slightly different versions of 1.0 (don't ask what's actually different because they're so minor that I don't even know, I think all they did was add new sounds and bugfixes?) so even if another version of 1.0 existed hidden in the tominecon file, it wouldn't be anything we haven't seen before

      As an actual software engineer I can say this is very unlikely, but you might not be far from the truth, let me explain. Passwords that size are almost certainly auto-generated by a custom password randomizer (they really aren’t hard to build yourself) and it would be incredibly bad practice and counterproductive to use the same autogenerated password to protect anything that matters. Expert software engineers don’t fuck around with reusing passwords and designing systems that mitigate the damage any one hack could do. Having said that, here’s where I think you might not be too far off. I do think it’s possible they were concerned someone might figure out their password generation algorithm, and that hashing algorithm was almost certainly used to generate passwords across the Minecraft universe. Actually, I might argue (although I’m not certain) that because the password is so large, it would be easier to deduce the process that generated it. it depends on how they designed their algorithm. If they generated different sections of the password and then concatenated them together, I could see it being possible to crack it, but impossible for me to really know

      I think it'd be more logical to just change the files on the zip or just change the password if that's the case instead of going through the extra effort of creating and swapping the entire file for a decoy. My theory is that the original file is literally just the final Minecraft 1.0 version. I may be wrong, but didn't they showcase Minecraft 1.0 in Minecon? If yes, they probably stored it in their assets server to be easier to download and showcase it there. I don't think it would be a secret magical never seen before Minecraft 1.0 prototype that has stuff that we've never seen before, especially considering that we do have the Beta 1.9 prereleases and the Minecraft 1.0 release candidates.

    • @MrPowerGamerBR

      Some people are theorizing "oh but if it wasn't something secret they wouldn't have swapped the file!", they probably seen people attempting to crack the file and thought that it would be funny if they swapped the file with an meme.
      Also, I think that the meaning of "tominecon" actually means "forminecon", not "twominecon", which would make sense why it could be just Minecraft 1.0, because Minecraft 1.0 was officially released during Minecon 2011

      @@mirady9675& @melonybravmann here's an excerpt from the 7z wikipedia article to answer your question:
      "The 7z format supports encryption with the AES algorithm with a 256-bit key. The key is generated from a user-supplied passphrase using an algorithm based on the SHA-256 hash function. The SHA-256 is executed 219 (524288) times, which causes a significant delay on slow PCs before compression or extraction starts. This technique is called key stretching and is used to make a brute-force search for the passphrase more difficult. Current GPU-based, and custom hardware attacks limit the effectiveness of this particular method of key stretching, so it is still important to choose a strong password. The 7z format provides the option to encrypt the filenames of a 7z archive."
      To summarize all the technical jargon, the more complex method of encryption used by 7z requires more time and usage of the processing unit, making it take longer to guess the passphrase since it has to spend a longer time trying to decrypt the files on each attempt that will fail every single time for hundreds or thousands of attempts until you finally find the correct passphrase. Heaven forbid they have some common sense and used a long randomly generated passphrase when encrypting the file, because then it could easily take centuries to break.

    I personally think the original really was just Minecraft 1.0, since, as someone else said, if they showed it off at Minecon, then "tominecon" could simply mean "take to Minecon".
    The reason they replaced it with a decoy was because it was funny.
    At the time, Mojang was still an insie studio, it was just a bunch of people having fun while working on a game.
    So the devs probably saw a bunch of people trying to crack open this useless file, and replaced it with a different one for the fun of it, kinda like a Rick Roll.

  • @davidbuddy
    @davidbuddy Год назад +61

    If you really think that the end could've been really different in this JAR file for 1.0 than I guess you've never tried any of the Beta 1.9 pre-releases. I believe the end more or less as we know it was added in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4. If you boot up 1.9 Pre-release 3 then you had the old textures for the end portal back when I guess the end was still planned to be the sky dimension. I believe some of the Beta 1.9 Prereleases had rounded Sun and Moon textures.
    Beta 1.9 would've been rebadged as 1.0 and I believe there was an RC of 1.0 which compared to the last Beta 1.9 pre-release I think was mostly sound changes. Though I'm going entirely off of memory here, not reading any patch notes.

    • @mcbyt
      @mcbyt  Год назад +12

      I know about the beta 1.9 pre-releases of course, but I don't think that pre-releases and snapshots are reflective of ALL development progress in Minecraft. That white cobblestone texture is already in the beta 1.9 prereleases, so I don't see why it couldn't have been used in some version that never made it to a prerelease. The End could've easily had old world gen, or basic dragon egg functionality, or any slight modification on what we got, really

    • @davidbuddy
      @davidbuddy Год назад +2

      @@mcbyt I'm not sure if you understood what I was saying, since I agree that the 1.9 PRs didn't capture all the development that went on at Mojang, and well if you want to capture all of it someone would have to steal their entire internal git repo, since I'm sure there are tons of commits of stuff that was canned or substantially refactored when pushed to production.
      I digress, my MAIN point was that from 1.0 RC to 1.0 an intermediary build really doesn't have archeological value other than saying you have it because it's likely just a hotfix differnec.
      As for why I brought up Beta 1.9, well if we had all the differences between PR3 -> PR4 we would also maybe even be able to see why they refactored the end into what it is today VS what Notch was planning since at least Beta 1.6 (what looked to most of us as something like the Aether mod). Did I mention the end portal textures in Beta 1.9 PR 3? You can go visit them in that version and they don't look like anything today texture wise.
      As for the white cobblestone texture, I never remembered it myself or know anything about it, but I'm not sure if I looked at the atlas texture file that has all the block textures in the PRs tbh. If it's not in the atlas file for block textures than it snuck into the JAR not really for the purpose of adding a new block.

    • @mcbyt
      @mcbyt  Год назад +8

      @@davidbuddy I agree there's likely nothing too significant between RC and 1.0, for sure! Tominecon.7z isn't from that time, though. It's from the same day as Prerelease 6, and that's just the date of the archive, not the files inside which could potentially be much older. Even if not, that was the same day that end crystals, dragon eggs, and the new boss fight came, so at the very least there's a good chance of a significantly different End dimension.

    I doubt that it would truly be anything substantial. But I do hope that in these kind of situations that there will be something big. In most cases though it’s just mundane uninteresting info.
    In Minecraft’s case it would be less likely to have anything surprising or interesting. Games with bigger dev teams and longer development typically have the big hidden files.

    Was looking through the original Secret file post, at the very end of the post someone says the following:
    "Why does this keep getting necro'd..? It's already been cracked on other sites, but there's nothing interesting in it. I tried to find someone who did crack it, but couldn't. Rest assured there's nothing interesting in it, or the entire thing is encrypted.
    To people trying to brute force it, plenty of people have already tried, getting over 5000 passwords a second and it would still take an unrealistic amount of time to crack."
    Maybe old archives have the file still? My issue with this comment above is that "if there's nothing interesting in it" how come it isn't a well known old Minecraft meme, as well as why there isn't much trace of it online?

    I don't know if you were around the Minecraft scene at the time this stuff happened, but all of those 1.0 features you suggest might have an earlier version in tominecraft.7z had already been released in pre-release/release candidate versions prior to Minecon. Based on good development practice of having a stable build ready well in advance of a major event to avoid unexpected bugs during a demo, plus the name of the file, it is almost certainly one of the release candidate versions that came out in the days prior to Minecon, with the build cut and ready to go to Minecon. The only thing else I could imagine it being was if they had a special build for Minecon with some change to support something they showed off there, but I can't imagine what, or some package of other files they needed easily accessible while putting on Minecon. But I'd lean towards the simplest answer being it is the final release candidate.
    Still, doesn't hurt to try and find out for sure.

    My guess would be that it contained personal information of minecon attendees, probably for capes. In 2011 minecraft had much less online content and it may have made sense to Mojang to store a list of caped players locally rather than on their servers. If this is true then the removal and decoy would likely be in response to privacy concerns, especially if the file contained more information than just usernames, such as real names or email addresses. This could also explain Archus's description, as if it did contain indentifiable personal information beyond usernames its very possible that Mojang unintentionally committed a crime by storing it, and providing proof of that could land them in legal trouble even if the file had long been removed.

    I guess it was some stuff they needed at that minecon. Probably some sort of promotion material or a demo file. There won't be something interesting inside. If it was something no one should see, why would they name it " to minecon"? It looks more like a temporary file with something they needed there and they forgot about it.
    And I doubt, Notch didn't have the password as someone changed the file right after a user messaged him. So Notch or some Dev probably looked inside, thought "that was not meant for the public" and replaced the file with that meme to make fun of the people trying to solve that "mystery".

Some video ideas are suggested by viewers, e.g doing the history of Mineplex. A few of them are ones I happened to stumble upon either while researching something else or just by chance; being involved with the archival/account communities, this happens quite a bit. And sometimes I come up with ideas by looking at my own videos, or videos from other MC history channels, and I find what works - then, I can either expand on that idea or create a new one in the same style. For example, I made a video finding the oldest Minecraft world - it turned out well and got a decent amount of views, so I then did one about the oldest skin, and recently one about the oldest mod, and soon enough I'll probably do one about the oldest account!

I need to find an ac charger to turn on that computer, but the reason i stopped is because of the cracked screen. Its there, I guarantee it, just not sure how to actually get it off of there.
