Chris Stuckmann reviews The Animatrix, an anthology of 9 anime shorts all inspired by The Matrix. Развлечения
It's a shame the Matrix phenomena died in the early 2000's,the expanded universe could have rivaled Star Wars.
HoboJoe83 IMO it does, but I know I'm in the minority in that.
HoboJoe83 a reason ,in my opinion, is that Star Wars has wide range of audience specially little kids while the matrix is not
lul
Absolutely.
Such a shame. They could even make an amazing TVs series ( without including Neo ). Imagine a random bloke seeing flaws in the matrix reality, like physics losing their natural function, etc
@@Domzdream There is already a animated matrix story that talks about this
For Second Renaissance it's worth noting that some of the most chilling images are actually recreations of actual photos (see Time/Life archives, etc) from WWII, Vietnam, Tienanmen Square, etc.
Broooooo ! The fucking robot standing infront of the fucking tanks!!! I finally understood that reference 😮
I love the Animatrix, I find it to be _extremely_ underrated.
It feels to me like the matrix film that the Wachowskis wanted to make but they had Keanu Reeves so they kept having to make Neo stories.
Naaahhhhh it's a classic
better than the second and third film
I can't even watch the damn thing the pilot who was torn limp from limp from his suit.
@User Name facts
"The Second Renaissance" is actually a condensed version of the film the Wachowskis wanted to do after the first Matrix. They wanted that and just a single sequel that resolved the plot-lines of both, but the studio felt audiences would be confused if the prequel didn't have Neo and co. in it and told the Wachowskis to ditch the Second Renaissance and stretch the sequel into two films instead. Thus Reloaded and Revolutions.
Nnnnooooooooooo Dx
Where did you learn this?
Kei Kurono: An interview with them I read online some years ago. I'll see if I can find it again for you.
Christ the easy fix would've just been to have Neo, Trinity and Morpheus be narrating over the events if the producers were so worried about that. First Renaissance is one of the most astonishing/disturbing shorts I've ever seen. A well-executed full-length film fleshing out the idea would've been remarkable.
How things could've been I suppose.
Kei Kurono: I didn't (yet, might look some more) find the interview I talked about, but I did find one with Fishburne that in passing mentions them originally considering one prequel and one sequel ("One Cool Cat" by Thomas Carney, you can find it on Laurence Fishburne's old official site, now mirrored on a website called NarrowDesign) and one with producer Joel Silver that talks a bit about the prequel (reprinted in the article "Matrix Goes Anime" by Paul Martin on matrixfan net). That last one is interesting in that it mentions them considered making it a feature-length animated film at one point after they ditched it being the "proper" second Matrix film, but before Animatrix became a thing.
It seems like everyone hates “World Record” but it’s honestly one of my favorites. It’s so cool, and I love that style of the animation.
it remined me a lot of the "chronicles of Riddick" animated short
It's the only one I remembered. The guy was basically trying to become superhuman by sheer will and determination. It's awesome.
@@heetsees ahhh, no. the guy umpluged himself but no one was there to remove him from the farm
@@wambokodavid7109 ahh what? My point is that he broke the physical constraints of the matrix through will.
Or as a wise man once said... If you hate World Record, you are not black
The second renaissance really got to me.
Hell yea
Same
Shit fucked me up
It’s dark
Good. That was the point.
We need that more often nowadays.
i wish they had done a short about the first failed matrix.
John Lynch Me too!
Or the first two Sions
In my head skynet is tied to the matrix and was the first version
@TREE HOUSE oh yh Legion aswel
That film isn't cannon to me tho lol
The gratuitous skin shots in The Flight of the Osiris had a technical reason behind it. They had invented a new technology for simulating skin (subsurface scattering) and wanted to show it off.
Thats actually really interesting..
When I first saw this, granted I was a teenager, I couldn't tell if it was CGI or live action. Now it's obvious but perspective is interesting.
"they" invented subsurface scattering? that's crazy if true, it's a commonplace realtime rendering technique these days, but back then I'm sure it was huge..
Renaissance 1 and 2 would make amazing prequels
Thomas Bell They were originally supposed to be prequels but the Wachowski's ideas were turned down by the studio because it was too out there.
Technically, they are already. Just in an animated format. I actually think as animation it's actually better then live action because animation allows artistic stylization that live action can't execute.
@@TheDawnofVanlife A serious live action still would do wonders to make people more interested in The Matrix, and put thought into what being free in real life means.
World Record is my absolute favourite of this bunch, it feels so incredibly exciting and inspiring to watch. The very slight connection to Matrix makes it better in my opinion. It's the story of a regular human who by his sheer will alone manages to break the boundary of the matrix itself. Just awesome
"Over sexualised fan service for no reason" it's Japan...........
Realhuman Keane the wachowskis directed them.
Average Joe not all of them
It's not Japan, actually. Final Flight of the Osiris was directed by Andy Jones (more known by his work as animation supervisor in movies like Titanic, Avatar and the Mogli live action) and made by Square Pictures which was at the time an American studio manned mostly by western professionals,. just owned by Japanese Square Co.
42Caio (Caio Esteves) well considering its called the Animatrix it's clearly inspired by anime, anime is Japanese. So the animatrix contains Japanese culture elements such as fan service. Thus my point still stands.
Realhuman Keane no it doesn't
Though I respect your opinion, I completely disagree with you.. "World Record" is AMAZING and my favorite from the Animatrix. It really added a mystique to the entire Matrix idea of "Freeing your mind".. But hey, who the hell am I... Lol.
Also, being a runner myself.. I find myself feeling "Free" during my runs/sprints.. I think only people who train like this can relate.. I'm always pushing myself to run faster during my sprints so it's liberating thinking about the whole "World Record"/breaking free premise.. I hope I don't sound too crazy now.. HA!
Zach Derbas yt? that's how I felt. that short was my favorite, but I see how people don't like much as athletes do. for me it was lifting weights/martial arts.
I completely agree. Anyone who has pushed themselves to extreme limitations, overstands "World Record "
Yes! world record was one of the best ones...stood out. that I was the only one who thought that. and the style of the animation was awesome. Hate to bring race in these but I cant help to think its some kinda racial bias due to the maun character being a black man. 🤔
They all were great shorts all different styles and perspectives. But all fantastic.
''Beyond'' is a favorite of mine. Not only is it beautifully animated (in a way that caters to the theme of kids' imagination) but there is a lot more going on in it than is mentioned here (but to be fair, you can't hit every base in a short discussion about multiple shorts). The themes of humans' needs for magic and mystery, and the matrix's agenda to destroy anything that invites imagination and creativity is subtle, and the sense of loss at the end when the main character (and the other kids) tries to go back but the glitch zone has been ''corrected'', is palpable and is subconsciously very resonant.
Whats the dark room supposed to be?
Your description is so on point! Beyond is my favorite too. And for the same reasons, basically.
I may even claim your thoughts as mine to discuss with my friends in the future. :)
@@lowserver2 a glitch
@@Carcosahead other than that at face value tho.
Can we just get Chris to 1 million subs already?
people are just busy ranting about pewdiepie
he cant eat that much
Nah
Like Ibuki says in SF IV, _you've got a ways to go!_
NethermanStudios
He deserves it.
"A deja-vu is usually a glitch in Matrix. It happens when they change something"
"was it the same cat ?"
So when you meet a vampire who then tries to take your blood, that's a Glitch? Whoa...
I actually like the idea behind World Record. It's like the 4 Minute Mile -- can someone do such a good job exceeding the limits of the human body, they actually break the Matrix?
They wouldn't be exceeding the limits of the human body though. They'd be exceeding the limits of the human body that the machines think they have.
Reminds me of the Cyanide and Happiness short where the running guy learns he can run faster than cars and eventually uses his stupid fast running speed to kill himself
second renaissance part 2 freaked me the fuck out when I was like 13, I couldn't stop thinking about it and thinking about it put me in a state of genuine horror, revulsion, and anxiety
Some asshole A lot of the scenes in Second Renaissance are based on actual film and photographs documenting real war and genocide.
second renaissance too gave me nightmares as a kid
i know, right!? it's SO GOOD! :D
@@SuzakuX Just saw your post and I was curious to know where I would be able to find the real-life references they used to make the short. It would be interesting to find out. Thank you.
I really like Record, yeah the animation is a bit in-your-face but I like the idea that a person's capabilities were able to exceed the Matrix.
As Dr. Ian Malcom said:
"Uh uh life uh, finds a way."
Nice reference
Your least favourite, World Record, was my favourite. Every objection you had I have an opposite take on it. World record also had the most impact on me because I love the philosophy it went for and because Im also an athlete.
World record starts out with showing you a guy who achieved a lot but was later brought to his knees in a drug scandal. Because of his desires to succeed, he wanted to prove to everyone that he had everything in him to do what he once did but greater. And that became the theme of the short, desire and determination for success until the transition into the desire for freedom.
We start off seeing him being comforted by his father, letting him know that he has the potential if he just believed. The whole concept of belief and relying on belief was pushed by the constant references to Christianity using the cross Jesus died on. A lot of shapes in the world were of crosses. His car keys, his pendants, his father's jewelry, the walls in the last scene. Belief was the main theme in the original Matrix film as well. The idea of belief became the corner stone of Dan's actions.
We started to make the transition into the desire for freedom when we were shown the interview with the reporter. Dan was quoted saying, "You're released from the world, you're totally free", whilst the shot was taken from the perspective of the elevator door opening..essentially being released..free. Tho we started the transition there, and as a foreshadow of things to come, the main theme was still on desire and determination. And we are thrown back to it with the sequence of him vs the agents.
That scene was, if not, the most critical, when compared to the reporter scene. We see Dan being brought to his limit. Literally nothing was left in him as his tore himself apart. But his desire for success was stronger than everything else. The short started out with a narrative saying, "Only the most exceptional people become aware of the matrix. Those who learn it exist must possess a rare degree on intuition, sensitivity, and a questioning nature. However, very rarely, some gain this wisdom through wholly different means". And this agent scene became the proof of that as we see Dan stand up against everything and pushed himself beyond limitation, not before effectively believing that he had it in him, effectively driving himself out of the dream world.
That action sequence stood out a great deal for me. We see the will in Dan's eyes when the Agents stopped time and everything. Like a short burst of electricity Dan's desires ripped him through every force that was holding him. The change in the music theme at that point was well done too. It drove home the feeling of moving beyond. It effectively placed you into Dan's shoes and it felt like you were the one breaking free.
Once Dan experienced this freedom, he's now in state of desiring something new. It's like he said in the reporter scene, "It's like nothing I've ever felt before, it's everything I've worked for. And now I'm just hoping to get back there again." And we see this when he began to raise himself out of the chair, reaching for freedom.
The idea of World Record is belief and freedom, the theme of the original Matrix. And I suppose one of two shorts that focused on desire as well. This is driven home by the last scene with the two walnuts. Each representing Dan's two lives of being trapped in something ready to be broken free.
Agree, my favorite too.
amazingly put, thank you so much
@@simono.5698 I just re-read this, and I can't believe I wrote this... What was I on? :)
The only one I remembered.
👏
there should be a second animatrix, exploring more of the lore involved with the matrix
Your least favorite one is my most favorite. When he says: "FREE!" it's just spine chilling. :) And I think what it offers is the look of matrix from the people inside of it, not everything has to be on the macro level. + It shows that there is another way of escaping matrix, through sheer physical effort, although this case seems to be unique. Either way the Animatrix is amazing, thanks for the review!
SolusBatty I agree!
One of my favorites too, where many of the other stories left feelings of hopelessness and defeat (and yes I still love them despite that lol) this story illustrated willpower and razor sharp focus and its power to eventually escape bondage. When he stands up at the end Wow!
Yup. after he says "FREE!" the music drops. so good. The sound effects and soundtrack are a big part of all the episodes!
Would you agree that world record is akin to the plight of Black people?
and athletes say that in peak of best perforamance you can get in trans, meditation and you watching yourself out of the body. And I think that fits in the motive of Matrix like is "see the light"
The word Animatrix sounds like some type of sex involving black leather.
Abe Froman - Yup. Dominatrix of the matrix. Eg - Trinity.
at least it doesn't involve animatronics
Lol you changed the way i look at Trinity
Well the Matrix films tend to feature an obscene amount of BDSM imagery, so that doesn't sound as odd as you'd think.
it's when you dominate an animal.
I'll have to disagree with you with World Record. For me, the style was unique and very well made and colors were extremely well displayed. This short protrudes the main essence of the matrix: Escaping "reality"
I watched the Second Renascence when I was 6 years old... Theres my contribution to the childhood trauma thing. I didn`t sleep properly for SUCH a long time and any photos of human anatomy had me running for the door. I love it so much, still scares me now. This whole 'film' is great, Program was a HUGE highlight for me as well as a Detective Story and Matriculated. But I love them all, except that one with the runner, the animation is so fucking uncanny, I just can`t, I`ll try it again soon as I`m sure I`ll love it.
Oh yeah, Second Renaissance literally traumatized me as a kid. But after I got over the trauma, I appreciated how powerful it was.
Duuude...i feel ya man i saw this when i was little and like it did traumatize meeeeee
I watched it recently and it traumatized me too. I'm 20...
World record your LEAST favourite? Wow. It's one of my all time favourite shorts, I didn't think anyone could dislike it that much.
The second Renaissance is the best to me just because of how thought provoking it is
For "World Record" you didn't mention how he tried to get back to that level so bad his legs gave out and he could never run again, hence leave The Matrix.
Renaissance part 1 and 2 are by far the best shorts of animatrix.
Agreed.
2002: Back when the Wachowski sisters were brothers.
wait there both women now i thought only the one??
lordaizen66 yepp. That recently just happened about a year ago
Abe Froman I'm still calling them brothers.
well there not anymore but its your choice what to call them
*they're (twice)
So, that's it huh? We're some kind of Animatrix?
JVD GUN STOP
Riley 'The Troll' Conway tell that Chris's snapped neck.
Ahhh DC and their memes - say what you will about the films but they have high meme status
Mate.... that opening sword fight was COMPLETELY necessary.
He's gay lol
"World Record" is my favorite from the Animatrix. Although I do like each shorts for different reasons, whether story, art style, animation ect... 'World record' is honestly the most memorable of all of the shorts. The art style/animation are great, and highly stylized; Yoshiaki Kawajiri's work always is (I love his work on other animes like Reign the Conqueror). Although not as lengthy as the the other shorts, the story is concise but effective.
World Record was the best one..
I agree.. this and Kid's story. One short, showing you a suicidal kid that later turns out he wanted to wake up from a dream, and a man pushing his body so far he breaks out of the matrix is a very fasinating idea, it's a very profound subject matter that completely went over Chris's head.
Perry Quaiattini Great way of putting it, friend.
I really enjoyed it as well.
it is my favorite too, i love the concept
Yes Chris couldn't have missed the mark any more! That one put a lot of feely good feelings inside of me haha
much better than The Matrix Revolutions
You got that right. Terrible movie in every way
BIG BOSS its not as good as MGS tho...
HOPELESS ENTERTAINMENT bought MGS3 like 10 minutes ago
Idle Thought Because #fuckonami. Kojima was p much separated from his team in the last several months of the development. He's put into this room where he can't contact any of his colleagues and if he wants to, he has to pass messages through someone else. This is why they can't even finish it in the first place.
The Boss is always right!
I haven't seen these since 2003. man I loved them on toonami
This is kind of what I wanna see from a Matrix reboot, an anthology tv show about random little stories about people who aren't Neo, Morpheus or Trinity.
Undoubtedly the only good thing to come out of The Matrix franchise other than the first film.
areasevenpro, you forgot "Cookies need love like everything else"
Angel Castaneda "Nyahahahahahahahahaha!"
areasevenpro What about the second film? I haven't seen it but it seems to have pretty good reviews.
David Robert, You will enjoy parts of it. Expect more talking.
Angel Castaneda I enjoyed the dialogue heavy scenes in the Matrix more then the action scenes so I think reloaded will be right up my alley.
Chris, could you do a review or analyzed video for Watchmen? I would love to hear your thoughts on the film even if you don't like it, there is lack of reviews for this film on YT.
The Scarecrow i agree
The Scarecrow i agree. i just watched it for the first time, and it wasn't perfect, but I don't understand all the hate I've seen about it.
i enjoy watchmen. but i don't know what there is to analyze, except maybe people just want to hear what they already know repeated back to them
Caleb Folts Zack Snyder's style can turn off a lot of people and it has quite a few deviations from the book but it's an extremely well made film.
Sean Seaphan - Watchmen fits in with his other analyzed reviews. It is heavily layered, full of ambiguity and no one can fully absorb it with only 1 viewing. People have also interpreted several scenes and character motives very differently and it would be nice to hear Chris's thoughts on the film and also the graphic novel.
The machine at the end is continuing the job humans did...
Yea, I got that feeling too
The Animatrix shorts don't 'have emotion to them'?! I guess we haven't been watching the same shorts then...I'm not saying all of them are pure gold...but the emotions these shorts are trying to get across, uneasiness, anxiety, injustice, disappointment, the nagging feeling that there should be more to the world and something is missing, are too subtle for some I guess...These stories haunted me when I first saw them and some carry a whole lot of meaning and depth underneath their cool looking presentation. Alas, taste vary and this is the guy that gave an A+ to a body switch anime...*sigh*
Chris sucks sometimes. This is one of those times.
Will you review "Star Whores" as apart of your Star Wars reviews? It is Canon after all
The Plastic Paddy Have to check it out, for... hmm... scientific research :)
Abdi 👋🏼🍆💦
The Plastic Paddy and also review the flim "return of the brown eye"
Pc Principal. "Revenge of the Stiffy"
lol
In my eyes I consider this a much better film than the main Matrix movies.
Its a superb accompaniment to the original Matrix.
If the Wachowskis ever make another Matrix film, I hope they take ample inspiration from this.
al112v5 I agree. ironically, for me, my least favorite stories are the ones the Wachowskis wrote.
Nothing beats the original Matrix, which is arguably a perfect film. The others... yeah.
I liked the Animatrix a lot. I thought it was a super cool idea so have different short films inside the matrix world. I wouldn't say that it is empty. You have to understand before the fact that these are going to be very short films and i thought they did a great job with it.
Also about that short 'Beyond'. The director of it was also one of the leading animators for Akira (1988) so it's no wonder the animation looked so good. Also that short describing the downfall of humanity to machines as a result of genocide and war was dark AF!
I always thought that Morpheus saying 'we scorched the sky' and 'we don't know who struck first' was a subtle reference to nuclear war, I didn't know that we literally blackened the sky with smoke. I guess this animation proved me wrong. I definitely need to check this out sometime.
D-no P: Ok gotcha. Yet again I stand corrected. 😂😂
Hahaahahaa, it was literal. We actually darkened the sky to kill those fukin machines!
XDDDDD
I love how in the show they are literally having an absolute blast applauding this ridiculous idea.
I feel very passionate about this. Especially the Renaissance which was scary but raw and emotional with all its symbolism made me really think about the relationship between man and machine, even more than The Matrix itself. And Beyond with its dreamlike visuals and that I could relate to the girl was magical for me. Also amazing score, Juno Reactor especially. I like how the animation styles are insanely different but great in their own way as well. *This movie for a visual person is heaven.*
Agreed. Animatrix is a visual movie. Showcasing great visuals and themes through imagery. Some people may find it disappointing due to stories going nowhere. But movies are not always about stories.
Found this dvd at a thrift store. Best 4 bucks spent.
Beyond is my favourite. The dove scene changed me as a child. So ethereal.
I feel exactly the same way! I love that specific scene (and the music within it) so much. I actually had a screenshot from that scene as my wallpaper on my pc many years back. It's just so beautiful! There are many moments in Beyond that are really special: the part where the boys are jumping from a window sill and try to get as close to the ground as possible without hitting it, the dove scene--as you mentioned, and the final scene where the girl goes back to the haunted house location that's been turned into a parking lot and she drops a tin can on the lot and when the can cuts her finger she drops her blood onto the parking lot. It is all so magical and emotional.
Me too. I love it simply for its laid back almost slice of life feel to it. Nothing is at stake, there's no danger, just people interacting with something strange. It's even inspired my own writing.
An in-depth, analytical, well articulated review of though-provoking media that offers great visuals, that I've never heard of and probably wouldn't have never clicked on the video…
This is all apart of the reason why I love this channel and am a proud subscriber. Thank you for your hard work, Chris! I love your videos! Keep it up- I can't wait to see more in 2017.
"The Second Renaissance Part 1&2" are my favorites of The Animatrix series.
Also really like "A detective story" and "Program" which is very complex, that simulation teach the need to fight for mankind or surrender to the dream world.
"Matriculated" is the bad one, that thing is on drugs.
yea but that poor kitty
Matriculated is so good..
I think i saw Matriculated once and never again. It's the worst one.
Matriculated is the only bad one IMO.
Why dont you try it once more :P The robot reprogramming sequence is so imaginative, you see new stuff every time ^_^
I vividly remember getting this on DVD back in the 00's.
It felt like such a special object. Almost magical. Really captured that element of the matrix well. You should've talked about the soundtrack imo Chris! I still listen to it regularly to this day. For one, "Who Am I" captures the essence of matrix angst to an almost frightening degree. It brings that certain anxiety down to a real world feeling we all can experience. Am I at home here? Is this real? What is real? Who.. am I? Ugh. Amazing.
Beyond is my favourite. Like Ghost in the Shell, Roadside Picnic and Rug Rats blended into something great
Yes!
I used to love Beyond. I like the animation.
AlmightyGamer Beyond does an amazing job of capturing childhood wonder, even if at its core that's all there is to it. It's probably my favorite of the bunch, along with Second Renaissance and Matriculated. Gorgeous animation and design.
Used to?! Beyond still holds up and is still wonderful to this day!
I wish they had done with Rogue One what they did with the Animatrix, rather than make a whole feature film. You could probably condense almost everything in Rogue One down to a 12 min short and have more or less the same experience, because the movie is really only about one tiny element.
Stephen Leotti But they don't make as much money then.
Tate Hildyard What a shame.
That seems like a nice idea. It would be really cool if they did a compilation of short films like the Animatrix for Star Wars. I feel like it will give the creators more freedom and room to experiment, exploring small aspects of the SW universe or covering stories from the books, that don't really "fit" in a full feature film (because of the story itself, budget, Disney's target audience or whatever reason). And yes probably Rogue One could have been included on that.
But yeah... I guess the problem is that it wouldn't make that much money :/
Producciones HC Yeah, obviously, it all comes down to money. Rogue One made a billion dollars regardless of how underwhelming it was, so I guess there's no reason to expect they won't continue doing it unless they stop being successful. But it's still a shame.
Pretty much.
The biggest issue I have with Rogue One is the lackluster characters. Maybe I'm so older, and would have hoped they had the courage to make some characters we would fell sad about in the end. The robot was the only character I felt sad about. The rest just... meh. To bad really and Rogue One was a nicely made movie from a technical point of view.
"Oversexualised fan service for no reason"
And? What's to hate? :D
Yeah just crappy US culture i guess
@@zackgravity7284 Japan Russia and every other country dives into the sex based themes cause it brings in the money
"Beyond" has one of my favorite songs and most memorable scenes when the girl grabs the floating feather.
I wonder how much longer we're gonna have to wait for some form of Matrix sequel / remake / prequel, how can such a phenomenal universe remain unexplored for such a long time??? Yeah, Wachowskis are as good as artistically dead, but there are people out there who could do Matrix justice.
.ENGLISH PROFICIENCY You should have actually wished for the opposite because you got your dream come true in the worst way possible. THEY'RE MAKING A FUCKING REBOOT BECAUSE HOLLYWOOD SUCKS
How you feeling now?
The Kid's story was definitely on my top favorites. The chase scene had me on the edge of my seat and the animation style really gave it that much more life to scene. I Iove a rough style and it's how I tend to draw and color because I always find that super clean lines just makes the person seem too perfect and more two dimensional than life like. It actually inspired me to alter my artwork a bit and I've had a lot of positive feedback over the years.
I still cannot watch The Second Renaissance without feeling incredibly uncomfortable afterwards.
There is a little something relating to the first Matrix film behind "Program". It subtlely deals with the idea of "Ignorance is Bliss", which is what Cypher says to Agent Smith during his meeting with him to betray Morpheus. The character of "Duo" wants to return to the Matrix and tries to convince the character Cis to go with him. Cis refuses, and during their confrontation Duo reveals that he might have done something to betray their crew to the machines; which is exactly what Cypher did.
Second Renaissance gives me the chills every time.
World Record is the one that I remember after all these years.
I must rewatch Animatrix again, I didn´t remember all the shorts until today, thanks for reviewing them!
The Matrix Franchise ranked from worst to best imo
4. The Matrix Revolutions
3. The Matrix Reloaded
2. The Animatrix
1. The Matrix
precisely. I wrote in a comment earlier, depending on what i'm in the mood to watch, i rank the Animatrix #1 sometimes
4 the matrix revolutions, the matrix reloaded, the animatrix
1 the matrix
I agree
Thank you for this review Chris, it was relaxing to watch and a welcome respite from the sh1tshow in Washington D.C. currently. I remember doing a film presentation in highschool on A Detective Story and wholeheartedly agree that it should be extended into a longer story.
The Second Rennaissance (1 & 2) is actually one of my favorite sci-fi things ever. The whole collection is worth it just for that one. And I don't even believe it needs a full-length adaptation as many want. I believe it is perfect as it is. As for World Record... I agree with many commenters here. It is actually my second favorite of the collection and I wonder why it didn't resonated with you. A Detective Story is my third pick though, great short indeed.
man, I love how objective you are. even if you don't like a film, you try to see what the production tried to do and imbrace how it was done and what the idea was to the audience. I'm definitely stuckmann-ized, bro.
The world record one is about human will and tenacity. It comes together at the end where the guy is in wheelchair and stands up agents trying to keep him down and he whispers "free"
I know its been 14 years since the third Matrix movie, but I really would like to see a spin off movie that focuses on different characters within the universe and not just Neo, Trinity or Morpheus.
"...And for a time, it was good..." Second Renaissance is awesome!!!
World record is the only short I remembered because it spoke to the humans who want to break their earthly bounds through sheer will
To me the animatrix was simply perfect!!!! PERIOD!!!!
I watched these shorts with my dad when I was 6 years old, I couldn't sleep for a week
I’m 24 and I can’t sleep now lmao
CHRIS! Review Enter the Matrix the video game about Niobe and Ghost. It also ties into the story of the Matrix Films. It is a multimedia project, so everything ties into each other. You don't have to do path of Neo, but I think Enter the Matrix is kind of vital to reviewing the series.
***** I really enjoyed it, but It filled in gaps in character's history or actions. I mean, It is more vital than the animatrix (I love it, but it has no barring on the films).
Ian Smart Path of Neo was the far better game though.
Ryan Sure but it just retells the movie's story. enter the matrix told a story that supplemented the matrix films similar to the animatrix.
I thought both Path of Neo & Enter the Matrx were both awesome in different ways. PON was awesome because you basically were in Neo's shoes, the fighting style was better IMO and it was cool to face that version of Smith in the end but ETM was great because it showed us what was going on with Niobe & Ghost during Reloaded.
which one do u prefere, revolutions or reloaded? (obviously the first one being the best XD)
Second Renaissance pt. 1&2 were so hauntingly informative for me. They both really explain all the little things they said in the movies perfectly.
How come haven't you yet reviewed War Dogs??
We need a Love Death n Robots like animatrix spin off TV show
Hey Chris! Any chance you'll be doing a Yu-Gi-Oh Dark Side of Dimensions review?
The second renaissance actually traumatized me back when I was 16
you forgot one special thing about the short film with trinity: it shows a previous version of the matrix!
no one alive knew that there were other versions of the matrix so no, that wasnt another version of the matrix with trinity in it. the art style and art direction are just stylised
yes! I thought I was the only one imagining it but you reminded it to me, it wasn't exactly 1940s, they had internet and other steampunky tools. which sums it up as a previous version of the matrix.
@@julijakeit well, odiwalker is actually right. it is just an art style. you can look it up!
one could argue that it maybe showed a different cycle wthin a current matrix version, but I wouldnt got that far :D
Final Flight of the Osiris is Star Wars - Rogue One ......let it marinate ......
John Rhymes gosh dayum you're fucking ugly
J Rhymes marinated
I remember seeing flight of the Osiris in the theater before Revolutions...and after the movie..really wished I could've just watched a 2 hour version of Osiris..
Not related to this video directly, but since your anime list and this video's release you got a hold of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Any thoughts?
I am convinced that the Second Renaissance short films were the inspiration for the backstory of the Geth in Mass Effect.
MadDemon64 It's pretty much a carbon rip-off. But Mass Effect gets way more praise.
Matrix didn't invent AI revolt
The Animatrix looks amazing
i love "beyond" it reminds me of childhood when you play outside an you get this feeling something magical happens in this place, when you are in a hidden place and feel safe with your friends
How can you say there is nothing under the surface of the short with the sprinter?
2:11 reminds me alot of the Geth/Quarian situation in mass Effect. anyone else?
Linus Newman it's based on real life genocide and war.
Red Sparrow you sure? How many times have humans created synthetic life and then destroyed it once the tried to be free? Must have really missed something...
Linus Newman "Does this unit have a soul?"
-Legion/Geth VI
+Linus Newman ... it doesn't have to have an exact 1-to-1 real world analogue to be based on something.
same for me. Geth/Quarian were one of the best aspects of Mass Effect
I love "The Program", easily my favorite. TSR parts 1 and 2 are also great.
Can anyone recommend a movie or anime that has a similar theme/atmosphere as that Detective story? That noir style.
Question for anyone; the first part of Animatrix, the 3D animated part, does it count as anime? :-?
I disagree with you on World Record, it was my third favorite. Great review though Chris!
you haven't reviewed the matrıx game though
This was an awesome review Chris, I still have my Animatrix vhs tape!
Chris, love the channel. Can I please make a request/suggestion. In videos like this can you please link the titles of things you reference in the description? Would be very helpful. Watching Terror in Resonance now but had to rewatch and sift/search to find the title in your video.
Batman Gotham Knight review please??
I'm normally all for Chris' reviews, and they influence movies I go to see pretty often. I have to disagree with a couple of his opinions on this though. The Second Renaissance seems to be trying too hard to use war and holocaust imagery to paint the humans as the bad guys and the machines as the ones we should empathize with. I get the intention of trying to make the war less black and white, but I don't think it was done very well. The other one I primarily disagree with is World Record. It was easily my favorite out of the shorts. Now, I'm not a fan of the art style myself, but the story of a man that broke out through shear force of will and desire to push himself beyond normal human limits was incredible, even if it didn't really expand on the history or the world much.
The imagery of The Second Renaissance is actually based off real life pictures like from Tienanmen, burning buddhist, vietnamese guy getting shot in the head, Time magazine war photos, etc...
It was basically a mirror to us, showing that what we do to the robots in the animated pictures is exactly what we are doing to other humans in the real world.
It was done exquisitely!
The Second Renaissance is the recount of the machines. They are incredibly smart, but that doesn’t mean they are not biased. Just like us.
Totally enjoy your reviews on the Matrix trilogy and the Animatrix. Thank you for the insights.
Beyond was my favorite
