It's pretty clear the song also has an undertone of the quest for success ruining relationships. He's still at the track, going the distance, she's all alone because he won't stop. Robot talk. I know it when I sees it, as a robot.

Cake is a fantastic band with a lot of great songs; if you liked this, check out "Never There" and "Daria"; if you want something a little different, try their cover of "I will Survive" - it's superb.

I Will Survive was my introduction to Cake!!! A glorious cover song with a simplistic and beautiful guitar solo. Worth a listen, for sure!!!

I had two friends in college who did the Cake version on banjo and tuba. They were fucking awesome! I love that cover.
to me this song has always felt like it's talking about the inner struggle a man has when he loves a woman and wants to do everything he can to provide for her but his devotion to making a better life for her ends up leaving her alone.. inside the man's heart breaks as he shares in the loneliness she feels but he must go the distance and finish the race even though others have already crossed the finish line before him and there's no more reason to continue his pride compels him to finish the work he started because if he doesn't then what was the point of leaving his love on the side alone for so long? it's a tragic story about a love lost over the best of intentions.. sad really..

That's a pretty much what I get. This driver wants to be number one to prove he's worthy of her love. She was attracted to that devotion but finds that his obsession to the "goal" leaves her wanting. Reminiscent of the "Watch and the Comb" story.
There's nothin' low key about this song. This a major 90s Alternative banger. Glad you guys enjoyed it!

Cake has been consistently one of my favorite bands, I love everything they put out. Their cover of I Will Survive is great. The whole album Fashion Nugget is great, but don't stop at their first; consistently good albums that bump.

Also, I'm not a fan of country music but Cake gets some of that flavor and I love it.

When I discovered Cake, I was in Moab Utah and starting the World famous Slick Rock bike trail and this song started it in my headphones , I put it on repeat and loved it forever rimeinds me a Slick Rock now lol , love how songs attach memories forever. 💓
Y’all I have this whole album downloaded to this day. This is a whole 90’s vibe, we were weird and amazing. Gen X for the win! We will go the distance, we weeded out those who couldn’t survive early on. BTW their “I will Survive “ is a Banger.
Its about a guy that's a work-a-holic, who is putting in all this time and effort at work (at a job that he actually kinda sucks at and thus is wasting his time), in order to win over a woman by elevating his social status and wealth (all the while he's ignoring her actual needs).
Its not about actual racing (which is why they keep switching the metaphor between driving and riding a horse).
Like others have alluded to they got alot of good songs in their catalogue. "I will survive" cover is worth a listen, and italian leather sofa. Also another band with a similar vibe soul coughing (circles is a good song to introduce ya to em).
Soul Coughing is SO GOOD.
I hope they check them out.

I had never considered the interpretation she just offered & it’s perfect. I always enjoyed the sound & accepted it as on brand for them to sing nonsense. Very cool to see a song you’ve enjoyed a long time take on a new life.

One of my favorite bands. Carbon Monoxide is one that gets overlooked that I love. Comfort Eagle is high up there, and Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps. But yeah, no bad songs. They do a Muppets song too.

I remember seeing them on Conan O'Brien, I was excited about Cake on Conan. Other guys around sat to watch, they did Short Skirt Long Jacket. A guy asked me if they were a joke band. He didn't get it.
Cake has been one of my favorite bands for a very long time. Pressure Chief, Comfort Eagle, and Prolonging the Magic are all perfect albums for me. Such a unique band and have a great discog.

Oh man you guys have got to check out more cake, they have so many great songs. Try "Never There" or "Mustache Man (Wasted)" next. And I always interpreted this song as a story about a racecar driver leaving his woman alone to pursue his career, get your mind out of the gutter lex lol.

It’s about a guy who lost a race and is doing everything he can to win. Even neglecting the women who loves him. He is still driving after everyone else leaves so he can get better and win the next race even if that means not seeing his girl. The horse is just another word for his race car. He is just so determined to win nothing else matters to him. That what I got from the song.

I went to a Cake concert in Vegas once. On the roof of the Cosmo. The big screen monitors showed the singer, the guitarist, and the drummer. Never once did they show the bass player. I left very sad. He's a badass.

i still remember heading out from fort worth texas to see my parents in johnson city tennessee with my 2yr old daughter and her mother. my daughter had been to an acdc concert in my then wifes womb. but upon birth she was sooooooo into acdc! every time she heard the initial chord or two of thunderstruck, she would proclaim, "turn it bigger daddy", which was her way of saying louder. but, back to what i originally meant to say, cake had just released their first album and my daughter at the age of two, absolutely adored "going the distance". "going the distance daddy, play going the distance!" them were the days. she is now approaching 31yrs of age and is doing well. just sayin'.
This is what my friends and I called yuppie rock in broadcasting school in the 90's.
