Love another great presentation from you Vanessa. Can I add a couple of things? When you are working an audience, you are actually speaking one on one with the people in the room. No matter the size of the audience, each individual demands your attention. I use a figure of 8 to cast my eyes over the audience. The size of the audience doesn't matter, it's just a bigger figure of 8. I like what you say about preparing before and knowing the room. If you are on stage with lights showing on you, you won't actually see the audience. This is work having a walkthrough before helps and you can establish where your figure of 8 will flow. How high to tilt your head as if talking to the back row, and bringing it back to the people right in front of you.
You start your first impression BEFORE you are seen. Judy Garland backstage, would stomp around hrumphing to herself and then burst out on stage full of life. My Indiana Bones character bursts out on stage, tumbling and cracking a whip. It brings life into the presentation. I once did a talk on Cyber Security dressed up in authentic medieval armour, got to center stage, sat down, took my helmet off and said "what a night I've had". It made the audience fascinated and relaxed at the same time. Just for context, it was a talk on holistic security and I talk about how each part of the armour from the coif under the helmet, padded arming jack to breast plate and gauntlets worked together to protect the person and how all the parts of information security worked together to protect the business and its data.

I’ve never thought of using different parts of the stage for different points! I love that these ideas could be used for teaching in classrooms too.

    Dear Vanessa,
I’ve learned a lot from you since I watched your TED video. I’ve been following you since then. This specific video about working a stage like a pro gave me precious hints, I presented a project with my group at the university and my performance really stood out among the others.
    Thank you!!
    Best regards from Brazil

Working a stage is like training new people in a store. Because if u dont walk every area in the store in a promt order. So my conclusion is you have to sell the floor to them like how you want them to stock or re merchandise. Even still teaching then how to engage with coustmers. So people skills is has a big impact in bussiness more then what people think. Sitting in a meeting is like the same as having your employees in your building. Its like a relay race.

Now I know why it was so hard to learn from certain teachers, the ones that spoke with no hand movements and never moved from one spot made the class sleepy and boring

Super tips Vanessa - I'll use them to liven up courses I run for work (1-2 day duration) especially to keep peoples attention, and stop 'em falling asleep (it happens). Was the dopamine picture in the background (of the chemical structure) deliberate? subliminal?

As an event videographer I couldn't help but pay attention to the way the video was edited haha they switched angles too much here in my opinion. I know people have a low attention span but come on! Not this much haha also I agree with Vanessa with moving on stage but would also make speakers aware that moving around too much can show nervousness just as much and the speaker should also be aware of lighting incase they wonder into a dark spot. You don't always have the opportunity to move all over the place if you speak at a big conference like Ted and they want you to stand on the red matt most of the time lol
