I just played through this one again and I think it's undoubtedly the most endearing story of any JRPG I've played. It's in my top 5 JRPGs of the last decade. However, it's a far cry from a masterpiece for me and I really wish they would have made some quality of life changes in the remaster instead of just slapping a fresh coat of paint on it.
      1. Leveling in this game is a pain. Resetting familiars back to LVL1 after metamorphosis is a bad mechanic. Halving the level would have been better. Any meaningful leveling you can do is limited to defeating Toko and its evolutions. Regular encounters simply don't give enough EXP towards the latter half of the game.
      2. Some of the Alchemy recipes are impossible to create unless you spend hundreds of hours grinding for the materials which you can only get off of gold enemies (like shiny Pokemon) which have a ludicrously low encounter rate.
      3. The whole game should have been voice acted for all story related content. Of the dozen or so scenes that were voice acted, only 60% or so of them were meaningful to the story. A 10 second voice acted scene of someone saying someone's name then make some noise like "uuuhhhhhhhh aahhhhhhhhhh!!!!" is pointless when there are much more involved scenes you have to read through.
      4. Dinoceros and Griffen should have been rebalanced in the remaster.
      5. The world map should have been better. You should have been allowed to zoom in on another area even if you weren't there.
      6. Attacks in combat that disrupt the entire flow to show some cutscene were a bad decision.
      7. Swaine tales FOREVER to execute a trick shot.
      8. Esther's battle AI should have been better balanced to burn less MP and balance MP burn with physical attacks when 2 of her favoured genuses are more physical combat focused.
      9. The game should have been broken up into 2 games since 90% of the game is chasing down Shadar and defeating him feels like the end of the game but NOPE here comes the White witch that Oliver had no clue even existed until she unleashed Manna right at the end of the game and introduced herself. White witch should have been in a second game or removed from the plot entirely.
Anyway, that's enough because I could list more problems with this game but I'd be sitting here on the toilet all day. Point is, I accept that others can feel this game is a "masterpiece", but for me, it's not. But it is a top 5. It has a lot of flaws but is still really good overall.

All of the main games are playable on the PS4 (0, Kiwami 1& 2, remasters of 3 4 5, then 6, and then Like a Dragon) in addition to the two OTHER games from the same studio that follow a similar formula/universe (Judgment and Lost Judgment) which immediately puts it on the 'Best Of' list of games for me.

Transformers Devestation. I mention it because I don't think most people will think of it as an RPG, but it is. You gain levels, increase your stats, get new weapons. It's an RPG! The RPG elements are fairly light, but there's enough there that I think it qualifies. And it's such a good game. Platinum combat at peak awesome and a pitch perfect reimagining of the old '80s Transformers cartoon. The only problem is that it's too short. I've played two of the games in the video. I've only heard of about half of the rest. I have the platinum for Diablo 3. I've spent a little over two hours with Nier Automata. In two hours of playtime, I never made it past the first boss. This was, however, only three attempts, as this battle happens 40 minutes into the game and there is no way to save. I decided a game that requires players to replay 30-40 minutes to retry a boss battle isn't the right game for me.
    My favorites:
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition: So maybe it's unfair to include a three-game package. If so, call this Mass Effect 2 LE.
Horizon Zero Dawn: One of my favorite games, period.
Dragon Age: Inquisition: I have over a thousand hours in this game on PS4 and PC combined.
The Outer Worlds: It feels like a mid-2000s Bioware game. This is a very good thing.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey: The AC game goes full RPG. It's gorgeous, fun to play, has a great protagonist, and I don't care how it fits into AC lore.
Greedfall: See my reason for liking The Outer Worlds.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night: It feels like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, my favorite Playstation RPG.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. It's the same game as the 360 version, but with enough improvements to make it worth playing again. 60fps and a rebalanced leveling system - yep, all I really needed. I got the platinum on this one as well.

Putting this on my favorites right now. Thanks for all the tips Johnny, really appreciate.
Tales games on the PS4: Berseria, Zhestiria, Berseria and Arise. Amazing games. Specially Arise.
Ps: I cannot wait to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake part 2 on the PlayStation 9.

As far as ones you didn't mention, Valkyria Chronicles 4 was great, the original Valkyria also got a remaster. I really enjoyed Metal Max Xeno. That was a weird one, but customizing your own fleet of tanks was addicting and fun. I love Vanillaware anything so although you mentioned Odin's Sphere and Dragon's Crown, I can't leave out 13 Sentinels, which was a masterpiece.

Tails of arise has been my go to lately it’s been a long time since an rpg really grabbed me and pulled me in like this I’m slowly working my way to the end.I manage to play a little every night after work and I gotta say this game has some visuals some I may never forget.

I really want to buy the tales of arise games and play them. I recently got into rpgs with the witcher 3 and d&d ect. And i found a channel on youtube called food4dogs and she talks highly about this game. So i was curious so i typed it into yt to see a trailor and omg i want this game so so much. But my funds are limited right now. I saved up for god of war ragnarok and I'm waiting for it to go down in price cuz 80 to 300 dollars for a game is just wow! I mean i know it's god of war but come on lol I'm a game collecter and a huge gamer so i like suggestions on games I've never heard of like tales of arise. Gaming is what keeps me going that and music. I wanted to play skyrim but i was told you need to have the internet for that so that bummed me out. I love horror games they are my fav do they have horror rpgs?I'm asking because i literally don't know if that's a thing. I would love suggestions on games like this for ps3 ps4 or ps2 and since i barely leave my apt during the winter months gaming is going to be all i do well that and sleep. Yes i have a very boring life but i love it if I'm being honest.anyways thank you for your time. And suggestions are much appreciated. Was also wanting to try dragon age and bridge of kenya are they any good?love devil may cry series but my copies were stolen and i havent had the chance to replace them yet.I'd love to try the final fantasy games but the newer ones for ps4 and such i was told you have to have online to play those as well. So that dissapointed me. My internet connection isnt the best i mean it works but not very well. So i usually just play offline wich i prefer anyways.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, Titan Quest, Elex, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, Divinity OS2, The Outer Worlds, Nioh, Diablo 3, Diablo 2R, Children of Morta, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Bard's Tale IV, Dragon Quest 11 S, Final Fantasy 12: TZA, Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, Victor Vran, Brigandine, Ys VIII, Nier: Replicant, AC Odyssey, Moonlighter, Knights of Pen and Paper 1 and 2, Battle Chasers: Nightwar, Trials of Mana, 9th Dawn III, Salt and Sanctuary, and Warhammer: Vermintide 2 are my faves.
Dragon's Crown Pro is great, but it's a beat-em-up in terms of gameplay rather than an RPG to me. It's like Golden Axe and Streets of Rage...great games, but not RPGs.

Just got it a few days ago so Salt and Sanctuary on the PS4. This is definitely in my opinion a Metroidvania Action RPG Sidescroller inspired by Dark Souls, the lore is there, the gameplay can be tough and even grueling and most of the time you have no idea where you are going or what you'll be fighting next.
I know rogue likes are getting a bad rap recently as all being Souls clones or uninspiring, but Salt and Sanctuary is a beautiful little game developed by Ska Studios and it is a lot of fun to just get into it.
