If I'm not wrong, we call it 水草 because 草 is straw in English, and 水 is added to specify that it's referring to the tube for drinking liquids, as opposed to the plant material.
I speak zero Chinese at all but I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I honestly just saw it because I am a big chicken genius fan and so I clicked on it and totally glad that I did! Very interesting video! Much love from the US! ❤️👍🏽

i use singapore and taiwan chinese and some other chinese interchangeably. mainly cause my parents are frm mainland china but i was born and raised in sg. and i have normal sg accent but when i speak to my parents the china accent just surfaces hahaha

Actually as a Singaporean, i totally uses both words of what those guys said. Be it xi guan, shui cao, la ji or le se, etc. Maybe because my parents are both Chinese educated. I only got to speak English while in school or durian my long hours phone conversation during my secondary school years. Hehe

Once I went macdonald and order a meal upsize but the staff don't know "upsize" meaning, had a hard time thinking of what chinese word to say and tried many different phrase. In the end counter staff finally figure out and told us next time should say "加大" hehe
I also eat kentang grow up one. I support that Banana guy's comments. ps: I grow up saying it as "Bee Tear Mak" as in tearing a paper "tear" (cuz I'm Teochew). In Hokkien then it's "Mee Tai Mak". The "mouse noodle" thing I think come from Cantonese cuz I first heard it in HK in mid-90s, they call it "lou shee fun" (mouse noodles) cuz they look like tiny mice.
That noodle has been known as bee tai mak way earlier than the 90s. In fact, the taiwanese 米苔目 in the video is literally bee tai mak when read in hokkien
I am from south Louisiana (south united states) and sugar cane has been farmed here since the 1700s.... I had no idea people make a drink with it though!! I need to try this mysterious sugar cane drink

It's really easy. Crush the sugar cane and collect the juice. Filter out the fibre, chill the juice and add a dash of lemon before serving. Enjoy your traditional Singaporean sugar cane drink.
As an oversea Chinese/华裔 whose parents are from China therefore my mandarin is heavily influenced by Chinese mandarin, I would understand Angela with no problem because it’s almost the same except withdraw money and trash but it would be very difficult for me to understand Singaporean mandarin
Hopefully there will be Banana Cantonese VS Singapore Cantonese VS Taiwan Cantonese VS Hong Kong Cantonese VS Macau Cantonese VS Canton Cantonese in your future videos. As Cantonese is the genuine " Chinese" language.

我們新加坡有分三世代的華文語言,第一代和第二代的华文语言有参杂了新加坡的福建话,广东话,马来话,谈马话,英文话。所以我们新加坡人的华语有点跟别的国家的华语不一样。

珍珠奶茶 (年輕一輩會講珍奶)
畀錢 (也是給錢的意思)
撳機 (撳是按的意思,撳機就是提錢的意思)

新加坡人不只會說華語.連閩南語也會說但是就是跟台灣有點不一樣.我記得他們閩南語喜歡叫做 SUKA 醫生叫做老君(閩南語發音).下次可以做有關於這兩國閩南語的差異

「水草」大概來自Grass straw,就是古早以前都用蘆葦等等的「水草」來做吸管,台灣台語則是「吸管」直譯。

我覺得新加坡人只要是出生於華裔家庭,並且平時都用華文交談,多多接觸這語言都應該知道正確的形容詞。
例如我本身去台灣時都會用上正確的華文去溝通,而在新加坡可能就會改成本地常用的形容詞。

@@AN9ELHSU 当年1979年李光耀推广讲华语运动时,电视台和广播电台都禁止方言節目和讲方言的。当时流行港剧,全部剧集都得用配音方式翻译成华语,连主题曲都邀些本地歌星翻唱成华语。刚开始时很严格,苏芮的"酒杆倘卖無",只是那么一句也掀起争议。四十年过去了,讲华语运动很成功的把讲福建话的时代,转变成华语,成了新加坡华人的共同语言。最近这十几年才放宽一些,允许一小段方言,戏剧的片头曲也能播放了,之前的港台節目,一有方言就"卡嚓卡嚓!"。现在每逢星期五午间时段一小时也可以播放方言節目。

其實新加坡媒體的中文比台灣好很多,只是那些人不知是不是新加坡本地的。
「垃圾」這個詞的來源是這樣:原本清朝時這個詞只在南方用,北方沒有這種詞,後來國民政府制訂「國語」時「直譯」了蘇州話、上海話等吳語的發音來用,把標準音定成ㄌㄜ、ㄙㄜ、(lèsè),這時候北京人才知道並開始用這個詞!但那兩個字怎麼看都像唸ㄌㄚㄐㄧ (laji) ,北京人就不照標準,自己發明新的音去唸,後來中共定的「普通話」就直接照這個新的讀音了!而我們台灣因為來台的官員很多都江浙人,他們習慣照標準讀音,這個音就繼續保留住~。台灣閩南語發lahsap不過意思是髒,台灣客家話有兩個讀音,一個是固有音lepsep就是垃圾的意思,一個是閩南語借音lasap同樣指髒
