I’m Taiwanese and working in SG now for 2 years. I think your opinions about these two nations are precise. Though I love summer weather, I do miss cold weather and autumn when I lived in Brighton.
Honestly, I love that you talk about both the goods and the bada of each country, it really shows the locals in the said countries that yeah indeed the country is great, but there are always places to improve. There really is No need to fight because every country are unique to their own colors, and it would be boring if 2 countries are exactly the same. Anyways great video! Subs to you!

I am a Singaporean living and working in Taiwan for past 6 years so I can relate to most of the points made in this video. I agree with most of your points about both countries, especially about the lack of pedestrian pavements in Taiwan. This is one reason why I moved out of Taipei City (Neihu District) to Linkou District (in New Taipei City) because 建蔽率 (loosely translated as building coverage area) regulations in Linkou dictate that buildings must be built at a certain distance away from the road so Linkou is the only district with pavements in most places, allowing your kids/pets to walk on the streets safely without sharing the roads with cars, scooters, etc. Even so, Linkou cannot compare to Singapore because of the lack of covered walkways - in Singapore you can pretty much get away with no need to bring an umbrella along even though afternoon showers are common because the walking journey from your building to the nearest MRT station/bus stop is sheltered or you can seek shelter underground (i.e. Orchard Road). In Taiwan, because you must walk on roads everywhere, you are pretty screwed if you are caught off-guard with a sudden downpour. Besides, it can rain non-stop for several days or throughout a weekend but a thunderstorm in Singapore usually ends pretty soon except during the monsoon season. I also agree that there is simply no competition in terms of leisure - I drive in Taiwan and every weekend we can simply visit a different part of Taiwan with hundreds of mountains and lakes to choose from. In Singapore you are pretty much limited to driving across the Causeway to Malaysia if you want to embrace the nature. Cycling up Yangmingshan or around Taiwan surely cannot be compared to cycling in ECP or Coney island. I am fortunate that I am a Chinese so I can read and write Chinese - but even so, I found it a challenge to cope with the banking system, filing my taxes, reading contracts or finding information on government-related policies in Taiwan. It must be a nightmare for Westerners. However, I must disagree with you on the point of veggies - I grew up eating veggies in Singapore! Most Singaporean Chinese usually order veggie dishes separately - e.g. when you have a plate of chicken rice, you can order a plate of 油菜/豆腐 etc. The 2-3 pieces of cucumber are meant as garnish rather than the veggie side dish. Still, I grew fat in both Singapore and Taiwan, so I concur with you that food is great in Taiwan but as a true-born Singaporean, I still miss my bak chor mee, yong tau foo, wanton noodle, hokkien mee and prawn noodles in Taiwan. Lastly, I somewhat disagree with you on weather. At least for the last 6 years, Taiwan summer months are getting longer and there is virtually no more spring or autumn. It changes almost instantly between summer and winter here and even so, the past 2 winters are no longer cold enough for me to wear a jacket/coat daily. And if you are living in Taipei city which is surrounded by mountains on all sides, it's like living in a convection oven with hot air circulating around you. At least in Singapore you get a breeze or seek shelter from the sun from the trees planted along the pavements. In addition, the summer climate in Taiwan is also generally a few degrees warmer than Singapore (or at least during my time in SG).
Pretty fair views except food. The wide variety of dishes within each ethnic group and dialects group are mind boggling, not to mention the gourmet international cuisines available here. Maybe I didn't spend enough time to sample Taiwanese food when I was there, I didn't find much variety or taste that is unforgetable. Yes, maybe veg n fruits cannot be compared as ours are mostly imported, but still in season variety from all over the world can be found albeit higher prices. Thanks for sharing your keen observations of both countries.
I think most ppl still prefer Taiwan weather. No need to mention points. Food wise overall Taiwan still best. Missing Singapore food is your personal memory. I understand. Thanks for sharing.
Even if you have lived 22 years in 2 places combined, I can still sense huge amount of your British humour. You can't be even more British (which in this case, is to do everything you could to not embarrassing anyone) about the 5 to 5 tie in the end. As a native, I most agree with every point you'd made about Taiwan, that's a proof how well could can blend in to a new place. Hope you enjoy your time in Singapore!
I am Singaporean. Thanks for the kind words for Singapore. Though i will miss the mountains and lakes in Taiwan which I cannot find them here. Singapore will always be where my home will be.
My wife and I had a really nice experience visiting Taiwan, I thought the people were so friendly! Can't wait to go back.... By the way we have lived in Singapore for the last 10 years so I can understand you.
Also I spent a summer working in Shanghai and was warned by many here in Singapore to be weary of the PRC people.... Nothing could have been farther from the truth, the folks in Shanghai were wonderful and it was a pleasure to work with them. I made many good friends there that summer...
Singaporean here. the reason why chicken rice only have 2 to 3 pc of cucumber is because, most of times, these cucumber are not eaten by the customers. If you want few more pcs, just ask the stalls, i think they will comply. Anyway..chicken rice are traditional serve with just few pcs of cucumbers, not related to the price of cucumber. Been to Taiwan first with the Navy and then for work and leisure numerous times. Love the food, ppl. But i still prefer coming back to Singapore, the place i was born and bred.
I'm an expat who has lived in Taiwan for 12 years. I've only ever visited Singapore, but Richard's description of life for foreigners in Taiwan is spot on, so I have to assume what he says about Singapore is accurate as well. I feel Richard gave an interesting and balanced critique of both places. I quite enjoyed this video.
Thank you for posting the video. My husband and I love love love staying in Taiwan. We travel from the Mid-West US once a year for a 2 or 3 week visit. We love the people, the food, and the culture. Taiwan is a safe a welcoming country. We are considering retirement there in a few years.
I probably agreed with most things you said, but I was so ready to beat you up when you said Taiwan food wins 😂😂… great video mate. Kudos to you for being such an explorer!
As a matter of fact, Taiwan and Singapore cannot be compared on the table because we are two very different countries in culture, economics, people, industry, geography and many others. But what you did to compare in living cost, safety, medical, food etc. is fair enough. Taiwan welcomes people around the world to visit, travel and live in to share the core value of us. Blessing you, Richard!
Wow, a nice description of my favourite places in the world. I tend to agree with most of your comments but as a European (so definitely a foreigner) I think you have missed a very important point: people. People in both Singapore and Taipei are just so welcoming! I did not expect to gather so many smiles and such a level of kindness in both cities (also in Taipei, even if my Mandarin is limited to just a bunch of words)... maybe because I am used to Milan's extremely lower level of good manners and hospitality, but I think that can also apply to Londoners or Parisians. Fully agree also on the statement that you should adapt to local culture and lifestyle: mingling in is the best way to get to know a foreign country, understand it and appreciate it. Thanks!
I've visited both places in 2019. Loved both! Especially the food and people. For me, personally I would select Singapore because of the ease of communications and living in a harmonious and diverse society. Thank you for your video!
Yes you are 100% right. I have been in Taiwan. Taiwanese are such good people, I respect them and very advanced and modern country . Don’t know about Singapore. I haven’t been there.
Thanks for sharing your life experiences in Taiwan! I am a Singaporean and have been to Taiwan twice for vacations. Food and beverages are definitely something I miss a lot about Taiwan. While I do love the food in Singapore, I do miss the breakfast and street snacks at night in Taiwan from time to time.
Singaporean here🙋 Though i have not been to Taiwan yet. I used to have Taiwanese colleagues. They are very friendly and approachable.Very sincere & genuine. They are also good listeners(heart-to-heart talks).Taiwan have very nice food & scenery too. I know i will love Taiwan.
Singaporean as well. Taiwan is the only place I have been to out of my own choice (the rest were for work), and I have been there 4 times so far. I think it's fairly obvious what I think about Taiwan. If you're a Singaporean Chinese like me, Taiwan will feel like a second home. It's like a staycation on steroids everytime I go there.
While Singapore has a geospatial disadvantage when it comes to local sightseeing and trips, being a major air hub in the region means that residents have access to many air routes to world famous destinations at very competitive prices. So it’s not uncommon for a resident to catch a weekend beach trip to Bali, Bangkok for food and shopping or experience a July winter in NZ. But amidst today’s travel restrictions I truly envy my friends in Taiwan trolling me with photos from their local holidays.
I m a singaporean who share the same experience with u! I had been in Taiwan for 8 yrs, and I love the 小吃、小菜 and fruits! Most of all their 热情! Like your video, Tq for keep exploring new place and new food here.
I agreed about the lack of certain vegetables in a certain type of food, I myself has a gripe about this! Thailand street food wins in this challenge!!!
Love knowing this video, totally need it when i move to taiwan from singapore in the future, though i did have a short 5 mths stay in taiwan before. I can really relate!!
It depends on what you are looking for in a Country. There is no perfect job, so there is also no perfect country. I am a Singaporean. I like Singapore due to it's safety and strict law which protects the citizens. I don't mind travelling to Taiwan for holiday but to stay there for long term, it's a no to me. Due to it's safety and law and politics. These are very challenging in Taiwan although it has more attractions than in Singapore.
How does the law protect its citizens when self defence is not allowed? talk to any IO from the police force and you will realise this. When you are surrounded by 10 attackers armed with weapons and you happen to be a kungfu master. You disarm and disable them to escape successfully. You will still be charged for causing hurt to your attackers. When I talked to the police and said how does that even make sense. They said you should run instead of fighting back. When I asked what should I do if i was cornered and there was no place to run, they only shrugged their shoulders. Taiwan is as safe as singapore and I regularly walk around the whole of taiwan during my annual trips there. People are also friendlier and help others way more. When I got lost and ask for directions, the locals there spent their time bringing me all the way to my destination. Good luck finding that kind of people in sg. talking about safety, i believe both countries are generally equal. You can't say Singapore is safer especially with the slew of reports of people getting murdered when they went out to jog at the reservoirs and parks these days. but these are still a small number in both countries. I don't even want to start with politics. Could be another 10000 word essay. Taiwan politics is messy. they argue with each other on TV. That is whats' probably turning you off. but at least they display it openly rather than doing everything under the table like some countries we happen to live in.
I am a Singaporean and am currently assigned to Taiwan. Taiwan is really a very beautiful country. The people are very family. They treat everyone with respect despite anyone's race, language and religion. They try to understand me despite they do not speak English much here. Personally I have to give more credit to the Taiwanese for their loving nature and their ability to reach out.
I agree with you on Singapore’s weather .. despite frequent showers it still feels uncomfortable to be out during daytime.... but still Singapore is a joyous place to be
milkybar06 It's a mystery. I remember I used to get punished in high school P.E. class because I forgot to bring a swimming hat in the swimming course. So, I start to argue that if I should have leg covers as I have a pair of “furry” legs😂
I love Taiwan but respect Singapore. Singapore is an advanced country although with resource limitation. Thank you for this video but it is hard to make comparison of two countries which have their own specific history and culture.

Fair. I think you threw in the "water" and "fire" just to help Singapore score two points. :-) I dunno about the bathing cap issue (or how important a consideration it should be), but I've had my share of barbeques growing up. And while it was a social event, BBQs are very enjoyable in a hot tropical climate. Sure it's more readily feasible in Singapore because it's always warm, summer-like climate. But without the contrast of winter, BBQs are just not as enjoyable. Just my opinion.
I used to live in Singapore and Taiwan , I also able tp speak and write Chinese , i would say I respect and appreciate your video , for me , when i was younger i lived in Singapore , i love that country , I miss Santosa island and the Zoo , but when i moved to Taiwan a bit older , I found I can be myself , Singapore life is simple but also limited , and the law are strict , the government is good but also a bit controlling , Singapore is a multi culture society , however they use English for their official langue , Taiwan has a lot of Japanese influence , and they use Mandarin or Chinese , the society allow people to be themselves and have more opportunity to do what you like , it is more freedom, they are not like Singapore have the same dominant party rule the country , and they are more progressive in many way then Singapore ( like gay marriage ), but Singapore does not face the treat of their neighbors ( even sometimes many Malaysian complain about Singapore ), like Taiwan they have huge treat from the China communist government , and Singapore is accepted by UN and international , Taiwan is always been bullied by China and like an orphan in international , you can feel the wronged and grief in every Taiwanese , they are not been recognized and not been validated because of the political issue , so politic is a big matter in Taiwan , they have many election every few years and you can kick out some politician if people think the person didnt do right things , Singapore is very peaceful , quiet , safe and people trust government , Taiwan is excited , adventures , people dont always trust government , but they can do a lot of things Singaporiaan Cant do , my friend in Taiwan after got his master degree turn himself an organic farmer , but my friend in Singapore , like many other , working in a bank and push his kids study hard and hope he would get a government job in the future .
Everyone has an option - choose the one that best suit you. Neither Taiwan or Singapore is perfect but anyone of them is best if they offer what you really need and you have prioritized for. The blessing is you have the opportunity to take that option. :-)

@@donglinwang3453 Wrong, they are another country running independently. Stop being a communist fool who still supporting your country when your country first leader is doing wrong. Both Trump and Xi are dictators who are selfish and greedy.
There are trade-offs wherever you choose to go. At the end of the day, it boils down to personal preference. It took someone 20 years living abroad to choose to come home for good. The proof is in the pudding. Taiwan is a great country to visit but Singapore is home .
DEAR TK Yap, I agree with you. Taiwan is a great country but Singapore is home. Europe and UK charges almost 50% of income tax monthly from foreigners, and in return one may get free school and medical care. But their free schooling is conducted only in their own local language, thus placing one's child in a private international school cost the same as one would have to pay in singapore. Healthcare in polyclinics in Europe have a queue time of weeks and even months. I do not know about the taxes in Taiwan. But I believe their schools are conducted in Chinese, whereas Singapore's state schools are conducted in English. Which is relevant to the world. We have not charged 50% taxes from foreigners in our country. I am a Singaproean who have lived abroad for 20 years and I still would like in Singapore at the end of the day.
I agree with everything except for the BBQ. When I grew up 40 years ago, we didn't BBQ on the "mid-Autumn Festival" Day. I remember that we could still BBQ when we went to the "mountains" surrounding Taipei. These days, I do not think anybody will BBQ in any park in Taipei. Why would you do so when the air quality is poor? On the other hand, as a Taiwanese, I do LOVE Singaporean food (authentic or fake).
Definitely enjoyed this video. Every country has its ups and downs, so it was great to see the differences. Haven't been to Taiwan, would love to be able to visit some day!
As a Taiwanese living in Singapore for more than 10 years, I get this question very often! Love this video! Very fair comments on both countries. To be honest, I still crave for a nice BBQ whenever Mid-Autumn Festival is around the corner. Haha. I miss the food in Taiwan; I have a must-eat list ranging from 潤餅、草仔粿、甜不辣、蔥抓餅、綠豆花生豆花、綠豆沙、every Yam dessert、雞肉飯、乾粄條、鵝肉麵、蚵仔煎 ... to 滷味. Regarding the road safety issue, I do share the same "horror" when walking on the somewhat invisible "pedestrian pathway" in Taiwan. Believe it or not, my mum still holds my hand when crossing the road in Taiwan even though I am 30 already. XD
why are u still a taiwanese living for so long in Singapore....why dont u go back to taiwan for good since u obviously crave for your local food which is perfectly understandable....just not sure why u dont make the effort to balik rumah??

I’m Taiwanese and working in SG now for 2 years. I think your opinions about these two nations are precise. Though I love summer weather, I do miss cold weather and autumn when I lived in Brighton.
Honestly, I love that you talk about both the goods and the bada of each country, it really shows the locals in the said countries that yeah indeed the country is great, but there are always places to improve.
There really is No need to fight because every country are unique to their own colors, and it would be boring if 2 countries are exactly the same.
Anyways great video! Subs to you!
Your opinions about these two countries are totally neutral and fair. You did an excellent job on comparing every aspects.

One is a province and the other is a country Taiwan belongs to China
@@worldpeaceno.1951 Wrong, China had lost the chance to own Taiwan. Its like abandon your kid to end up in an orphanage or adopted and now you are rich and want this child back. Its up to the child, not you!
Thanks for such a comprehensive comment. You must be exhausted after typing it! 😀
@@paulineng6177 Correct...almost agree in everything above except the food.

Thanks!

Check your salary in singapore and taiwan.

That is whats' probably turning you off. but at least they display it openly rather than doing everything under the table like some countries we happen to live in.
eh simi country? taiwan is not a country, just say region
You are so nice.

The part of parents: same as Taiwan
Great ! Very deep comparison.
Everyone has an option - choose the one that best suit you. Neither Taiwan or Singapore is perfect but anyone of them is best if they offer what you really need and you have prioritized for. The blessing is you have the opportunity to take that option. :-)
Great comparison! I’m a Taiwanese American with 2 Singaporean daughters! I can relate with your experiences! Miss these places!
I'm a Singaporean, I go to Taiwan every year before the covid 19. I love both countries.
Taiwan is not a country, unless U are part of 16 island nations
Samuel Liu Chinese people are not allowed to watch RUclips. People in the rest of world recognize Taiwan, or Republic of China, as a country!
@@sywu4714 only 16 insignificant island + Vatican nations have embassies in Taipei. Don't argue with me of this.

Nice video. Fun video. Quite true in most regards too
Singaporean here. Been to a Taiwan Taipei & Kaoshiung in separate periods.
I think Taiwanese has better manners. The country in my opinion is also more liberal.
Truely Taiwanese behave better, except while driving.
Taiwan is not a country.

@@jennifer-oc6io You are wise to the difference. Belong to where your home is.
As the cheesy old saying goes, "home is where the heart is".
@@christianjlevesque True. You are realistic. Not happy, move out to where you will find it.
I think it is a quite fair view. Taiwan and Singapore should learn from each other and have more cooperation.
Agree so much about Singapore’s hawker centre having exactly the same type of food 😂😂😂

Nice comparison! Thank you for sharing!
As a Taiwanese, was living in SG for 3 years (local hire), and now living in Japan for more than 5 years, I have to 100% agree with you!!! Maybe I should try to make a video to compare TW/SG/JP :)
Japan not very good for working, too stress and working hour is long...
June Wang I agree with you 100%! Singapore government came out with more smart policies than Taiwan. Housing and education are the best examples.
i think it is only fair to mention the floods, the earthquake, the typhoons and now even the air pollution, which you have not even mentioned....
Very accurate comparison. Born in Singapore now living in UK, I completely agree with you about the weather in Singapore. That is why I totally enjoy the beautiful countryside in Somerset and the unpredictable weather here. All the best to you and stay safe.
