The thing about varying the fasts is that I’m afraid to allow myself to eat more some days; worried that I will never have the mental/emotional strength to go back to fasting afterward. This aspect is almost never addressed. For many of us, intermittent fasting is the only thing that has worked for losing weight, and it’s scary to think of eating more, even if intellectually it makes sense. It would be good to know how to train our minds to be more flexible. I realize this is an enormous subject, but just wanted to put it out there, as this is an issue I’ve been facing in my own life.

Yes! 100% percent with you. It's been a struggle all my life. It's either I'm in 100% or if I give in a little, there's no turning back. It's an all or nothing mentally and at 42 It's still a struggle.

I’m 73 yo and I’m still, all or nothing. Been strictly, clean, Keto LCHF 1-1/2 years. If I were to eat one serving of bread or ice cream I would be off to the races because I can’t do moderation.

You are so right! It’s correct in theory. But challenging in real life. For me, to be consistent with my fasting until it becomes easy is the first priority.

This is what happened to me. I have been intermittent fasting for several years now without much variation and at one point I wasn’t losing any weight (even though I was overweight) while consuming around 1200 kcal a day. Now I started varying my fasts, adding longer ones and feasting days and I’m losing weight again. I also have more energy during the day and my gut is happy 😊

I'm 78 and I've been doing keto for 36 months - 2 and half years - and quickly lost 45 lbs in less than 6 months. 220 down to 175 and am able to maintain that weight easily on OMAD. I'm pretty sure I am a well established fat burner because I get through my day with calm steady energy. I wont even eat a piece of cake at a birthday party because I know it will mess up my clear minded, productive state of being. But, YES, I notice a long term 'staleness' effect and instinctively want to vary my OMAD routine. I do some 48 and occasional 72 hour fasts but have been reluctant to push fasting harder because the visceral fat is not going away and my arms and legs have been weakening. I've been increasingly aware of that 'stuckness' for about a year. So the breakthrough came from your recent metabolic switching video. I am combining weight training while fasted for about 14 hours followed by stimulation of mTOR with 5 small protein meals as you suggested. I just did my third, twice weekly, workout today - squats, deadlifts, and presses. I can feel my digestive system is over the moon with the small protein meals. The only one that hasn't felt wonderful was a kidney bean salad which I suspect was harder for the body to get at the protein quickly. So immediately after lifting I have 20 gr of protein in a protein powder shake, three eggs at noon, next some salmon or prawns, followed by another 20 gr protein from almond butter, and finally about 160 gr (ie about 40 gr protein) steak or a pork chop at 8:30 PM. I definitely want more by then and so the second half of the nut butter gets added and maybe another shot of protein powder. That's a feast to me, and maybe it is just right. I don't gain weight doing it and I sleep well and am able to resume my OMAD routine the next morning with no increased hunger. I suspect that it is partly because I am so habituated to OMAD and perhaps because the mTOR switching using protein doesn't reactivate any craving for glucose. I'll experiment with mixing it up more going forward. Thanks.

Ever since I've done intermittent fasting, I've noticed a marked improvement in my overall health, but with the encouragement of your videos, I began to experiment with my fasting combined with the keto I'd already been doing and it has stepped up my weight loss. In fact, for about a month during the holidays I relaxed my keto, but went back later and lost 13 pounds in the first week. I look at the constant change as a mild form of hormesis for my body. Thanks for the encouragement.

If you are comfortable at OMAD there is not reason to go back to two or more meals. If you want variation, change up the size of your meal, some days a huge feast and others a more "just enough" meal. You could also toss in a 48 hour now and then. It took a lot of hard work to get to OMAD. No need to toss that.

    • @JosannaMonik

@@robinbeers6689 I agree; also just eating once a day but not necessarily always at the same time. The way I understand it, the body needs variety in our eating to stay on its' toes.

Dr Mindy- I would love to see a video addressing the psychological Side of fasting. With regards to coming off the fast, mentally struggling with food, possibly binge eating disorder or just over eating. I personally have been fasting on and off for many years, but I have to be incredibly mindful of my thoughts around food. Lately I have been trying to find the data, or research out there around people’s relationship with food after fasting... just curious if you have anything! Thank you for all the work and information you put out. I really appreciate reading the studies you share. 💗

I have faithfully listened to your videos every week for almost a year now and while I find the content and the intention very inspiring, both my daughter and I have put on 10+ lbs doing lchf
    - even carnivore. I cannot seem to do Omad. I just wind up with a headache or so lethargic I need to lie down by mid afternoon so 24 hours or longer is out of the question. Every day I wake up and say I’m going to try harder and by 5pm I’ve broken my rules and then I give up cuz I have to make dinner for my family. Im sick of looking pregnant at almost 60 years of age but I just can’t lose any weight no matter what I do.

Drawbacks of fasting. Just getting over the worst outbreak of fever blisters I have ever had. I found some different posts that said autophagy fasting can cause the Herpes virus to trigger other that said it will heal them faster. I upped my Vit C and Zinc and bought some resveratrol. Seems to have help stop the next wave that was starting. Hopefully this was one of those it got bad to get better as my body heals fasting side effects.

Being in ketosis permanently does not slow your metabolism. Metabolic flexibility is good but it is lost by being a permanent sugar burner not by being a permanent fat burner. I totally agree that when you eat you should seriously eat. Doing OMAD is only "deprivation mode" if you are a sugar burner used to multiple small meals. If you do one big carnivore feast per day, this is not deprivation mode at all.

Only reason that would occur is if you’re not meeting your Maintenance level in calories. You can absolutely meet that in long fasts. Just eat caloric nutrient dense food. Fasting gets a knock on it for this idea that metabolism changes because of the act of fasting when it’s all about the food. Eat better and metabolism will still improve

I’m 43 eating one meal a day every single day since august 2019. I’m at my ideal weight of 157lb and I eat my ovo medi-Keto-biotic vegetarian diet, with sardines/mackerel/salmon/oysters once or twice a week.
Should I not fast e dry single day OMADe (one meal a day everyday) if everything is working perfect, weight wise, energy wise and well being wise?
I ask because as you said in the video, I only eat when I’m hungry, and I simply can’t eat anything due to not be hungry until at least 22 hours in fasting every day. My daily fasting average is 23.4 hours. And it’s been so empowering. So I would prefer not to have days where I don’t fast, because when I’ve done that in the past, I’ve noticed I have more well being when I eat only one large meal a day.
I go on daily walks of 6 miles, a lot of vegetables every day. Avocados every day, and super green smoothies every day, including powder super foods like Spirulina, Chlorella, wheat grass etc...
In short, if I’m eating 2500 calories every single day in a 1 hour period or less. Having a blast, eating with pleasure and excitement, should I still alter the steady protocol or should I keep listening to my body?
I’m open to change but shouldn’t we always listen to our bodies or not necessarily so?

I have lost 45lbs since January 1 2024 by eating one meal a day (keto) and also incorporating 1 long term fast (38-48 hours). Now all of a sudden my body has stopped losing even when keeping this approach. I have about 100 more lbs to lose and I am so discouraged. I've noticed when I let myself have a "feeding" day and eat more calories than I normally would I am always putting back on weight. I am to the point where I don't know if I should starve myself or feed myself. It's all so confusing and frustrating.

Dr Mindy might suggest testing for heavy metals. That might be stopping your weight loss.
