  • In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reenacted the giving of the Law by Moses on Mount Sinai. The religious leaders imagined He was destroying the Law, but the fact is they were destroying the Law by reducing it to a legalistic list of rules that must be kept to earn God’s favor. Jesus came to “fulfill” the Law by showing that it applies to the inner motives as well as the outer deeds, which means all of us are guilty, even those who imagine they are keeping the Law by obeying it outwardly. Therefore, we all need God’s mercy.

    I think forgiveness incorporates an attitude of good will towards one who has hurt us as opposed to overlooking an offense to the point of ignoring hurt feelings. Hurt feelings need a safe place of expression in order to bring to light what is hidden in the darkness of the mind, thus providing an opportunity for honesty and trust to florish.

    The last 10 or 12 minutes on lust was some great teaching, a valuable reminder.
    I learnt about Isaiah 42:21 as well, which is a fantastic verse.

    Near the close the Part 3, David made a comment that Jesus was flattening society. That comment brought my mind immediately to Is 40:3-5. It was a prophesy of John the Baptist, but in a way it was the very mission of Jesus, Himself. He came to flatten society because the ground at the cross is level.

    Anyone who genuinely follows Jesus becomes light to the world. I'm thinking of the 3 wise men they followed God and they became light not only to their own country but to the israelites as well. The coming of the Messiah was arguably the most important event to take place in the history of Israel, sadly they were not light, and it took people from a foreign nation To be the light bearers.

      Being "A city on a hill" seems to fly in the face of someone who is poor in spirit. But to be true light you must go through the experience of being poor in spirit.

    Could it be, that in the magnification of the seventh commandment Jesus was already seeing the day the religious leaders would drag Mary before Him to be stoned and He would write the secret sins of their hearts in the sand and help them understand, as Ty rightly noted, we are all sinners (he who is without sin, cast the first stone) and need forgiveness, grace and love…a Savior!

    His power awaits the demand of those who would overcome. The reprover is to animate his hearers so that they shall strive for the mastery. He is to encourage them to struggle for deliverance from every sinful practice, to be free from every corrupt habit, even if his denial of self is like taking the right eye, or separating the right arm from the body. No concession or compromise is to be made to evil habits or sinful practices.-Manuscript 26a, 1892. - {1SM 380.2}
    Any habit or practice that would lead into sin, and bring dishonor upon Christ, would better be put away, whatever the sacrifice. That which dishonors God cannot benefit the soul. The blessing of heaven cannot attend any man in violating the eternal principles of right. And one sin cherished is sufficient to work the degradation of the character, and to mislead others. If the foot or the hand would be cut off, or even the eye would be plucked out, to save the body from death, how much more earnest should we be to put away sin, that brings death to the soul! - {DA 439.1}
    To prevent disease from spreading to the body and destroying life, a man would submit to part even with his right hand. Much more should he be willing to surrender that which imperils the life of the soul. - {MB 60.2}
    Through the gospel, souls that are degraded and enslaved by Satan are to be redeemed to share the glorious liberty of the sons of God. God’s purpose is not merely to deliver from the suffering that is the inevitable result of sin, but to save from sin itself. The soul, corrupted and deformed, is to be purified, transformed, that it may be clothed in “the beauty of the Lord our God,” “conformed to the image of His Son.” “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” Psalm 90:17; Romans 8:29; 1 Corinthians 2:9. Eternity alone can reveal the glorious destiny to which man, restored to God’s image, may attain. - {MB 60.3}
    In order for us to reach this high ideal, that which causes the soul to stumble must be sacrificed. It is through the will that sin retains its hold upon us. The surrender of the will is represented as plucking out the eye or cutting off the hand. Often it seems to us that to surrender the will to God is to consent to go through life maimed or crippled. But it is better, says Christ, for self to be maimed, wounded, crippled, if thus you may enter into life. That which you look upon as disaster is the door to highest benefit. - {MB 61.1}
    God is the fountain of life, and we can have life only as we are in communion with Him. Separated from God, existence may be ours for a little time, but we do not possess life. “She that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” 1 Timothy 5:6. Only through the surrender of our will to God is it possible for Him to impart life to us. Only by receiving His life through self-surrender is it possible, said Jesus, for these hidden sins, which I have pointed out, to be overcome. It is possible that you may bury them in your hearts and conceal them from human eyes, but how will you stand in God’s presence? - {MB 61.2}
    If you cling to self, refusing to yield your will to God, you are choosing death. To sin, wherever found, God is a consuming fire. If you choose sin, and refuse to separate from it, the presence of God, which consumes sin, must consume you. - {MB 62.1}
    It will require a sacrifice to give yourself to God; but it is a sacrifice of the lower for the higher, the earthly for the spiritual, the perishable for the eternal. God does not design that our will should be destroyed, for it is only through its exercise that we can accomplish what He would have us do. Our will is to be yielded to Him, that we may receive it again, purified and refined, and so linked in sympathy with the Divine that He can pour through us the tides of His love and power. However bitter and painful this surrender may appear to the willful, wayward heart, yet “it is profitable for thee.” - {MB 62.2}

    29:29 jesus did not ratchet up the law he made, it stays. what he did was give better understanding of it. he magnified it as the psalmist prophesied. it was not meant to be external for external show. it is meant to be heart circumcising. it included thoughts, reasons behind doing, truly love for god and his truth. no hypocrisy, no showing off, no hidden agenda, no manipulation.

    In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ is contrasting the landscape of the visible/physical kingdom of this world as opposed to the landscape of the invisible/spiritual kingdom of God which He had already declared was with them or "at hand." By the time He gets to Matthew 5:29-30 He has already been comparing and contrasting these two views of ultimate reality. I feel like He is saying, "Sure. OK, you would be better to get into heaven without an eye or a hand, IF THAT COULD SAVE YOU but you are mistakenly thinking that the physical world is the ultimate reality. You believe that you should make your decisions as the scribes and Pharisees do (based on the physical world). You must understand that in God's kingdom the problem is not with your eye or your hand. The problem is in the spiritual kingdom of your heart."

    6:36 jesus was not reaching out to specific group. he is reaching out to all. commending some, condemning some, but inviting all to repent and become part of his kingdom. it just so happen that there are more poor than rich in the crowd. this is a fact even today. his parables always included the hypocrites, the self-righteous, etc. who do not know their poverty of their spirit.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the study today, as usual. Quick question which wasn't addressed or maybe it was asked during the live chat. Jesus uses the term "will be the least in the kingdom of God..." as if to say those who follow these principles will be greatest in the kingdom and those who don't will be least but they will both be in the kingdom. How do you explain that?

    7:02 again, jesus is not just drawing the disowned, etc. it is just a fact that they are the most open to his teachings and to repent other than more numerous in number. god so love the world, not just the poor, the observant. paul was with means, so was nicodemus. the disciples said they gave up everything. one cannot give up what one does not have. it seems peter had a flourishing family business and so did john and james. matthew must be a man of means being a tax collector. zacchaeus, too. most likely, the others were gainfully employed.

    16:18 fulfill (complete h4137 to make full, to complete). that is why jesus is declared as sinless. he did not break any of the law, in thought, word, nor deed. that does not mean we can break the law and go on sinning. btw, when there is no law, there is no sin. so, that demolishes the false teaching that the law was what was "nailed" to the cross and now is inoperative. paul continued to observe the weekly and annual sabbaths, goes to the temple to complete his purification, etc.

    29:23 jesus said his burden is light. the pharasaic burden is burdensome it drove many away from god. no, when he said "righteousness exceeding that of the pharisees" the word translated "exceed" is greek 4119, means more excellent. it is because it is the righteousness that is god given, not earned, not of human effort. i think jesus' point is missed here.

  • @graceyow3392
    @graceyow3392 2 года назад +1

    30:17 the righteousness we are to have that all of scriptures point out is righteousness that is the gift of god. human righteousness is never enough, as isaiah points out, it is but filthy rags. i guess you lost me from here. sorry. i do not see any reason to continue listening to the rest of this series.
    what this series is proposing is what jesus have already declared: his kingdom is not of this world; it is the kingdom of god. the earthly journey of believers is the boot camp to prepare us to be citizens of that kingdom. scriptures is our boot camp manual.

      But are in Christ and therefore have His righteousness. His Spirit lives in us. In Christ by faith. Most people don’t believe that/ walk according to this declaration.
