Azumarill is like the move Rollout in Pokemon form. It starts from existing but not actually existing in Gen 1, to actually existing but being terrible in Gen 2, to getting huge power, to getting physical water moves, to being blessed with fairy typing as time went on.
Azumarill is actually pretty good in-game in Gens 4 and beyond, especially when it gets the Fairy-type. Hits like a truck, quite tanky, and good level-up and TM movepool. Helps that in most cases its really easy to get and has quite early availability.
@@CoffeeFlavoredMilk it's actually a pretty good pokemon in general lol, power creep and Tapu Fini has sunk it slightly in competitive but it's still very good. BD/SP made it OU again in that tier. Seen plenty of VGC use through the years. It's *okay* in Generation 3 in game *if* you get it set up with full Ev investment and the only good TM's it can learn. It's still slow, and isn't hitting that hard with Return and Brick Break/Focus Punch. And unless you're solo run-ing they'd be better used on something else.
Seeing a Pikablu run is cool. Hope to see a Yoshi run in Yellow soon. You know, you can evolve Dragonite to Yoshi in the game. Billy on the playground told me that.
I too remember the Pikablu days. I’ve always loved Marill; it’s so cute and round! And it’s ears are so round too! And then it gets bunny ears! So cuuuute!
Currently watching your month of videos from sunny Cape Verde, where tonight this one is a balm against England's world Cup defeat by France. Thanks again for this amazing surplus of content.
Wow fast growth rate is so OP! As a kid I used to sweep the entire game with Gatr, but it would take it so much longer to reach that high a level by the end. As a result I'm guessing Azu's weaker offences get balanced out and it can knock anything important out fast enough anyway. So cool that it ends up being great even before Huge Power.
I love your content Scott! Usually your Canadian accent doesn’t show through very much, but when you were saying rollout it sounded like roll-ote 😂. Keep up the awesome content!
I think a major reason the Gen 2 results are more clustered is just better game balance. There was a big focus on every Pokemon, no matter how weak, having a chance to shine in Gen 2 compared to games like Gen 1 and Gen 5 where you have mons like Beedrill and Unpheasant next to mons like Alakazam and Excadrill. Even the really good Gen 2 Pokemon tend to have quad weaknesses or low stats in one or two categories and even the really bad ones tend to get wide movepools and set up strategies.
I guess I should congratulate you, Scott; you're officially famous enough to have bots. Rollout is so fun to use though. I remember one time in the Trainer Tower in LeafGreen I was up against a trainer with a Snorlax that had it and Return. Thing gave me a run for my money, that's for sure. I was thinking Azumarill wouldn't do so hot without Huge Power but it did pretty good here!
Pikablu ♡ I doubt it will do great, but looking forward to seeing how it fares! Decent coverage, decent defense, abysmal offense. Seems very doable, but the low offense will likely inflate the time needed to finish.
Excited for this one (obviously haven't seen the whole video yet). I remember I used to think Azumarill was a pretty "Eh" pokemon but then I heard it was pretty damn good. It was when I played a Pokemon Emerald Nuzlocke and used an Azumaril that became a reliable pillar of defense for my team when really started to love this pokemon. RIP Ferix the Azumarill. Died to Dragon Dance Boosted Critical Body Slam from Drake's Kingdra.
@@collinqs2541 In Gen 1 crits ignore stat changes. I'm pretty sure Gen 3 Crits count your stat boosts though. If you boost your attack/sp.atk stat, your crits would also probably do more damage.

Imagine if it got a priority before gen 4, (only priority moves in gen 3 are Quick Attack and Extreme Speed) It would be amazing We all know how good it was (and still is) after receiving Aqua Jet
Azumarill is my single favourite pokemon since Black 2! I've even taken it through a crystal solo so I can empathize with this run more than any other. My run I let go of rollout too early and didn't have a good HP type so I had to surf through Morty, and it took me a while to figure out I should be using rest so Karen gave me trouble, other than that it was almost identical to your second playthrough, it's a really intuitive pokemon to use. Like it has all the tools it needs without any distracting fluff moves or long dead space
Right on! I'm using a Thick Fat ability Azumarill in my playthrough of pokemon violet. Even without the Huge Power ability it's a very good water type pokemon. Those defenses are solid.
Azumarill has gotten so many buffs across the generations that it's practically a different pokemon today. Gen 3 gave it Huge Power, Gen 4's phys/special split gave it usable water STABs and coverage like Superpower and Ice Punch, and Gen 6 made it Water/Fairy (still one of the best all-around type combos in the game). Forget Pikachu favoritism, Pikablu is clearly the dev team's favourite.
Hold up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but... Rollout's base power = 30. Add defense curl (x2) = 60 Add stab (for a rock-type; x1.5) = 90 Add hard stone (x1.1) = 99 (let's just say 100) That means used on the fifth turn... 100x2=200=400=800=1600! If used on a flying type, that's 3200! If that flying type is also fire, ice, or bug, then 6400! That's almost 10x ancient power and swift! Hot dang! Edit: forgot about Brock's badge. That's another 12.5%. That makes it over 7000 power!!! 😵
So, fun fact: I went with my grandparents in 1998 to Atlanta, and I bought a Pikablue figure from a shop. My grandma told me she would give me $20 per day that I was good, and, at the end of the trip, I was able to afford Ocarina of Time for $80. Man. Those were the days. I miss those times.
I remember when people called this thing Pikablu. Thanks for making me feel old. =P (I mean, memories of Yellow do that well enough on their own, but still.)
Azumarill actually got better every following gen. It got huge power in gen 3 effectively doubling its attack. Then due to the physical special split it could use its water moves from the physical side and some other moves(ice punch and superpower). Moreover,in gen 6 it got the fairy typing which made it so good! Bellydrum ,aqua jet,ice punch and play rough is a very threatening set in competitive!
And in gen 5 it got pseudo buffed with rain, and gen 7 it was pseudo buffed by being one of the best Z move abusers. I was convinced it was gonna be buffed or pseudo buffed every gen. And then it got axed until isle of armor and didn't even get buffed in gen 8. Oh well
It's funny to see how many people here in the comments thought Azumarill wasn't very good in Gen 2 but this playthrough shows otherwise. Sure, it's not a threat on the competitive side, but not all Pokemon are meant for competitive pvp; some are just fine being a beast in regular playthroughs.
All this talk about the Almighty Weedle reminds me of an old meme of Weedle being the ultimate Saiyan repellant because Goku is afraid of needles while Vegeta is afraid if bugs. XD
I remember what Pikablu was supposed to be being two different things. One was Marill, though at the time I saw the picture of "Pikablu" I already knew what Marill was. The other was a Surfing Pikachu. I would read fake tutorials of how to get Pikablu online, (usually involving "Bill's garden") but then I'd read how to get Surfing Pikachu legitimately and was kind of confused because I didn't play the games at that point. And then I got a Gameboy and Pokemon Crystal and tried the Egg Moves method. (Which in these games you'd have to teach the egg directly, if I remember right.) It worked, but only because I kept forgetting what gender the parent Pokemon has to be for the baby to be that species. So I got a Marill who knew Surf at birth.
Third reason: Brock. He's a much bigger wall in Gen 1 than Faulkner is in Gen 2. Nearly everyone can do neutral damage to the birds, but to get past Brock you need super effective damage, special attacks, or lots of levels.
I remember when I first found Marill next to Ecruteak City and that it was adorable but also tanky looking. I didn’t know it evolved and was pumped when it did. I really enjoyed using it with the Defense Curl/Rollout combo.
Kinda excited for this one. The Marill is my favourite line and no, i'm not one of the kids who believed in Pikablu, because i got introduced to pokémon in during DS runtime aka platinum, but is more of a combination of factors: The tail design is intriguing, the concept of azurill being premature is weird, the rounded design with blue and white is so adorable, so was the kinda bounce animation in the 3DS (One of the few well animated mons alongside Ludicolo, Hitmontop and Spinda. 3D mons look so lifeless 80-90% of the time), and well, huge power means is a simple yet deadly beatstick, my favourite kind of playstyle and wheter was AV, Sitrus belly drum or CB, it was good at its job.
You should do this again with azumarill but mod crystal to always double your attack stat meaning you always have huge power. Would be interesting to see how much better that makes it in gen 2 specifically.
45:12 Wait a minute… Espeon in S-Tier? I don‘t remember you doing a video on it, maybe it’s a future release? Anyways, glad that it‘s comparable to legendaries; I speedrun Espeon as an alternate Main Pokémon in Crystal, my current time is 3:51:53 on vanilla Crystal, without speeding up the game!
pikablu was really good , even though I didn't had that much hopes for that one , but that rollout defense curl strat was on point to a certain point , I would say up until the mid game . But then the combo of return curse was really getting the job done ,and I mean this Pokémon even got an s tier finish , if it wasn't for that giga chad Weedle 🤣. That kind of makes me wonder how would Shukle would do with this strat? other then that , thanks for changing my perspective on the Maril line .😄
Azumarill desperately needed an ability. And the physical/special split. And the fairy type. And a strong and accurate STAB move like Liquidation In summary, Azumarrill needed a lot to be good.
You should do tyranitar vs dragonite. I think it would be a good video since they are 2 very strong pseudo legendaries and it would be nice to see who would win. Maybe dragonite vs kingdra would be more fitting but kingdra is a trade evo so I think you'd do that separate. I think tyranitar would win due to the early game moveset
I would love to see a meowth/persian run in either yellow or crystal, the ability to generate extra cash with payday would be interesting to see how it affects the game
I love your content. I follow you since a while and always enjoyed your ways to improve your times and our viewer experience. But one thing which annoys me a bit: In gen 2 (maybe even in gen 3) the enemy stats don't align with your own. Speed is the 4th slot on the left side but on the right side it's the last slot. It'd be great if you make it the same order (whichever you prefer).
To me Azumarill is like the Gen 2 equivalent of clafable Bulky Diverse enough move pool Gets fairy buff Slow af Really good in playthrough and competitive
16:40 Actually, HP Ground would have been stronger because the Attack badge boost beats an increase of 1 BP. Though, granted, the difference was minimal.
Fun fact, Azurill (the baby form of Pikablu) in gen three is the only Pokémon that can change genders when it evolves (due to a mistake with the gender ratio between it and Pikablu)
@@TheDarkFiddler Azurill is the only Pokémon to do this. From Generation VI on, Azurill retains its gender upon evolving, despite the gender ratios still differing.
I think two other reasons for the time clustering you’re seeing is that low level Pokémon have better thought-out moves (thanks to breeding) and the lack of a normal-resistant gym leader in the first 10 levels when few learn set or TM moves are usable.
Since you're doing Gen 2 and 3 now, you should test out Pokemon with and without egg moves! Are egg moves OP? Ps. I'm pretty sure it's pronounced A-zoo-marill. Like in Azure, not a short "Azu".
Pikablu is cute and was the best Gen 1/2 leak early on and also feel like ground HP is like always used in this game cause Jasmine even if water would be neutral
It feels like every major feature added to the Pokemon franchise ends up being a net bonus to Azumarill - Addition of abilities in gen 3 - Physical/Special split in gen 4 - Addition of fairy type in gen 6 All-time glow up
I would love to see a solo Run of the Marill Line with Huge Power ability at Fire Red or Emerald. What would be sick is Azumarill: Nature which boosts Attack + Huge Power + Belly Drum + Rest
Would be fun to take the top and worst 3 of Gen 1 and see how they shuffle around in the tier list for gen 2. I'd go by the fully evolved form, since that seems more immediately relevant for Gen 2 as red is a pretty tough nut as is for final stage pokemon.
As Dominating as this Pokemon is in this game, just imagine it having the Fairy type and it's 10 base stat boost. Jasmine, Koga, and the KoffingRocket Executive would probably be the only trainers that could stop it.
Great run! Honestly it would be cool to see a Crystal run with Azumarill's base attack altered to 100 to roughly mimic Huge Power. I wonder how much time that would save vs this run
Azumarill is incredibly egg-shaped😨 I remember I had a playthrough of Gold with Feraligatr, Weepinbell and Azumarill as a young one, good times. Oddly, I think I didn't evolve Weepinbell to Victreebel back then🤔 is it even possible to obtain a Leaf Stone before meeting Bill's grandfather in Kanto in Gold/Silver? I know Crystal had those trainers that would call & give you stones sometimes.
Your comment about Tri Attack sometimes being a Fire Type move made me wonder, what if it was always Fire, Ice, and Electric type. How that would do against abilities like Flash Fire and Volt Absorb aside, it would be neutral against Normal, Fighting, Poison, Psychic, Ice, Ghost, Dark, Steel and Fairy, while being resisted by Water, Electric, Rock, and Dragon; being double resisted by Fire; presumably ineffective against Ground; super effective against Grass and Bug; and finally double super effective against Flying. Butterfree beware! Not altogether very good though
One thing that confuses me in the current UI layout is that speed is placed as 4th on the Pokémon but last in the opposing Pokémon tab. Relatively small thing, but the colours generally don't do enough clarity for me to not get confused XD I keep reading the SpD. on the player Pokémon's stats as speed
Azumarill is like the move Rollout in Pokemon form. It starts from existing but not actually existing in Gen 1, to actually existing but being terrible in Gen 2, to getting huge power, to getting physical water moves, to being blessed with fairy typing as time went on.

Really good in playthrough and competitive
16:40 Actually, HP Ground would have been stronger because the Attack badge boost beats an increase of 1 BP. Though, granted, the difference was minimal.
Yuuh dude i remember the pokegod rumors on the playground that takes me back!

Update: Just finished, and man having the fast growth rate really does come in clutch
Fun fact, Azurill (the baby form of Pikablu) in gen three is the only Pokémon that can change genders when it evolves (due to a mistake with the gender ratio between it and Pikablu)
You say error, I say trans icon
trans guy icon marill 🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️
@@TheDarkFiddler Azurill is the only Pokémon to do this. From Generation VI on, Azurill retains its gender upon evolving, despite the gender ratios still differing.
3:25 - "weedle is too strong"
of course, @WeedleTwineedle is too strong, you activated their wEakNess poLICyyy 😍
It feels like every major feature added to the Pokemon franchise ends up being a net bonus to Azumarill
- Addition of abilities in gen 3
- Physical/Special split in gen 4
- Addition of fairy type in gen 6
All-time glow up
Still waiting on a gen 2 starter video!!
Keep up the great content!
Azumarill is a beast. I have one in my Violet team and it just hammers so many things with the extra attack
I would love to see a solo Run of the Marill Line with Huge Power ability at Fire Red or Emerald.
What would be sick is Azumarill: Nature which boosts Attack + Huge Power + Belly Drum + Rest
Dynamic punch, just in case you wanna miss. Lmao I died.
Pikablu is such a good name.
I cannot believe Karen is stronger than a weedle! This will not stand! Get me the manager!
Huge power would be more than 100 equivalent base stat.
Weedle is so strong, that you might be able to beat Lance with a single one.
You might need performance enhancing drugs to beat Red.
Interesting to see how it’ll do without Huge Power.
huge power on azumarill is even better since in japan it’s name is muscle man
Azumarill is incredibly egg-shaped😨
I remember I had a playthrough of Gold with Feraligatr, Weepinbell and Azumarill as a young one, good times.
Oddly, I think I didn't evolve Weepinbell to Victreebel back then🤔 is it even possible to obtain a Leaf Stone before meeting Bill's grandfather in Kanto in Gold/Silver? I know Crystal had those trainers that would call & give you stones sometimes.
The girl in the grass below Celadon will phone you and give a leaf stone
I can see return ice beam surf and perhaps some awesome move you came up with in order to win. Keep going Scott! I am a huge fan
Metronome. Splash.
That's hilarious.
5:53 - "i guess weedle is stong but Faulkner isn't"
Of course, Faulkner doesn't have a wEakNess poLICyyy 😍
