Just watched this for the first time and it's a very interesting video on a couple of fronts. First, for the question about thick vs. thin toplines and how much perceived "help" that gives, I think that depends on the golfer. As one who can miss a bit thin at times, thicker toplines actually inspire *less* confidence. I'd rather mass be distributed lower to help those thinner shots. Second, for the comments that peak height is a factor, you also need to look at the descent angle into the green. You can see those numbers right around 11:15 in the video and there is essentially no difference in descent angle between those clubs (at least in this small sample size). I would venture a guess that the higher peak height of the TM club is due to more total energy being imparted into the ball due to its lower loft (less of a "glancing" blow.).
IMO those Hogan Fort Worth 15 blades are the best looking blades by far of anyone's. It's a shame the company isn't doing very well. Decades ago Hogan used to be the king of forged irons and due to mismanagement they gave it all away to Mizuno and Titleist.
Really liked the review but my goodness the tech you're using to film is unbelievable. I know it's just you and Dan in the room but it's like you have a whole production crew filming this. So cool.
After Dan's comparison you discussed the launch angle being lower in the P-790 due to the lower loft, however, if I noticed correctly when you did a close up on the screen - the peak height was highest with the P-790 - that seems odd considering a lower loft. I think this shows a real positive spin (no pun intended) on the P-790 - dont you?
Hi Mark,Dan. I play TMspeedblades and they are a strong club,i still get good height with them but felt i needed to try a different club so tried the TM m2 with same shafts as speedblades (project x 5.5) and tbh totally messed my head up ,for 1 they are quite chunky and i actually lost distance by a club and a half so have gone back to speedblades.i have now ordered the P790 .for the ball flight that they deliver and dont find them too chunky at all,i cant understand why people get so hung up on how chunky any club looks as long as the results that they are looking for are delivered.I think its a vanity thing with most players, what do you think ? Btw i am a cornishman by birth but now live in Bermuda you should bring the posse out here for a few rounds.Look forward to what your reply may be (on the clubs that is)
Mark I never hear anyone discuss swing weight. I am wondering if u think it would be worth it to explain it in a video if it's something worth worrying about or not. If your getting fitted it is not something that is discussed if ever. Your thoughts?
Does the peak height not make a difference though? Looks like the p790 goes 3 yards higher so role out looks similar to the AP2, helping it off set the spin number a bit. Would be interested to see what the comparison between role out numbers are
Mostly agree with the loft comments, however I think we are all forgetting that in spite of the stronger lofts the TM had, it still had a peak height GREATER than the AP2, and a better descent angle. I am thinking that these two things would make up for the less spin. Mark??
Just to contribute on is it a 7i or should we have lofts on bottom of clubs debating point raised in the stream, I am in 2 minds on this. If the ball flight is that of a 7i, it stops as quickly as a 7i then I am happy to call it a 7i. If it is stronger loft than traditional (say the same loft as a traditional 6i) then maybe we should call it a 6i Fli-hi
Wondering why there was the lengthy chat about loft but not about peak height. Looked like the height was actually higher with the 790 despite the lower loft. Which in theory should mean that it will stop just as easily. Interesting
I know I'm late to this party but I wonder why you didn't use the AP3 because it would be more apples to apples. I guess I think of the AP2 as a "players" iron and the TaylorMade as somewhat of a GI iron in a players iron look. It would be interesting to see them bent to the same loft and then compare. I wonder how close they would be in spin and height and distance.
Maybe, but I know I'm down to these two clubs. This comparison helps decide which range of club to pick. I'm leaning towards the P790 because I want a little help with my common thin strikes. Depending on the reality of the help, I'd rather pick the AP2 for every other reason.
Had a fitting with Taylormade using the 790 last week. Hit the "7" iron well and long, like a 6 iron really. The fitter said, having tried multiple shafts that ideally he would like to weaken the loft for me?? That is to make it like every other reasonably lofted manufacturers 7 iron, Not impressed! My concern for most average golfers is they will never flight their 5 and 6 irons adequately and may suffer more side spin and have directional dispersion issues. Not highlighted in my opinion.
Just a question... how come you do not compare the same type of club against eaxhother. Like AP3 vs 790... 770 vs AP2.. and 750 vs titleist mb... Just curious. Thanks, love the videos. Gives me something to watch over the long winter!
Unfortunately your bias against tm has ruled you out of fair comparison testing. Would love to get back to enjoying your videos again. What was the height of those strikes again? Good luck.
I am totally on the banks offset wagon I'm a 28 hcp and have played rocket bladez tour std fit and now play MP15'S fitted in know I'm missing out on forgivness but find that I try to over ride the offset of the club
I got myself some RSI 1's cos I thought I needed the help, I'd played Mizuno MP59's but then started working away and could only play twice every 3 months, but the thick top line just made me feel like a bad player and did more harm to my confidence, so I know what that guy's comment on the video means, we all think differently don't we.
But you are getting 6iron numbers with the p790 it’s s going further, and higher, with a shorter club length. Even though it has a stronger loft.. isn’t that the tech doing that?
Probably should've done P790 8 iron (35 Degree) vs the AP2 7 iron (34 Degree). Also, is it just me or does the sole of the P790 look much larger/wider than the AP2?
Mark thanks for showing the review. Just a feeling I got watching it was the camera should be mounted on a tripod at a distance we can see everything as though we were standing there watching you guys. In other words just leave it alone the viewing was lousy, difficult to watch.
I think you are not comparing comparable irons...P790 Vs AP3 would have been a better comparison. Check the lofts of AP2 against AP3 and the P790. JM2pW brah
With you on the titleist grooves though I think that about my 714 ap2s . Like the fact that they have gone back to a similar being chrome look over the chunky looking 716 . Will stick with my 714s . Great value now second hand and can be speith too 😂 largely talking to the ball and cussing it . The better iron just made me work harder to strike it well and my game slowly improving . Cheers Mark / under armour speith boi 😊
All clubs should not be marked with lofts, because then that loft would not correspond correctly for those of us that like to bend lofts weak/strong away from factory standard.
What I don't get is this.... If you have 170m and hit the 7 iron 170 in one range and a 6 in the other, you'll still need whatever club gets you there.... Isn't it best to choose what gets you there in the best way/shape.... All this cranked and spin carry on is a moot point if you can't get it to approach as the right angle to stop....
"Taylormade have done really well...." LOL. This is so funny to watch now after what the craziness that the 'golf company that cannot be named' decided to do at the end of last year.
From a watchability point of view I would ditch these live sessions. It just comes across as very repetitive and redundant. Spin rates and launch angles are usually going to be around the same anyway relative to the club. Maybe a live coaching session with a student would be more interesting.
you do NOT consider the peak height. Though every time you call NOT fair stronger LOFT. Quit crying and give the real deal that the P790 is a better club for dispersion left to right and front to back.
Got to say though thanks for the reply. I find higher ball flight,(peak height) on my launch monitor at 18 degrees launch 7 iron is amazing with stopping power. Be good bruh you do a great job
Far too much waffle about nothing with minimal actual real time testing, pony camera shots of a mat?? Would also benefit from a personal mic so we can hear the waffle when you're away from the camera. 23 mins that could have just been 10.zzzzzz
Dan's golf swing is mesmerizing. I can't stop watching it. So smooth.

I think the AP2 look fantastic really want to try them!
Wow, that 16 yds was really impressive despite the loss of spin until you realize that you're testing a 6-iron versus a 7-iron.
Ben hogan irons also have the lofts written on the bottom 😃
IMO those Hogan Fort Worth 15 blades are the best looking blades by far of anyone's. It's a shame the company isn't doing very well. Decades ago Hogan used to be the king of forged irons and due to mismanagement they gave it all away to Mizuno and Titleist.
so do pxgs
Just tried both of these today. Both feel great. Hit the p790 a bit further, not really sure which one to choose!!!
Really liked the review but my goodness the tech you're using to film is unbelievable. I know it's just you and Dan in the room but it's like you have a whole production crew filming this. So cool.
Wouldn't AP2 / P770 and TMB / P790 be the more like for like match up?
Hi Marck, its also important to look at descent angle and peak hight, if its go higher it will stop quicker.
After Dan's comparison you discussed the launch angle being lower in the P-790 due to the lower loft, however, if I noticed correctly when you did a close up on the screen - the peak height was highest with the P-790 - that seems odd considering a lower loft. Mark, how do you start a video like this without first knowing the lofts of the clubs you're comparing???

Would be interested in the P790 vs M1 as they are the same loft. Also the P790 vs AP3 as they are both hollow type clubs and very similar in lofts
Mark I never hear anyone discuss swing weight. I am wondering if u think it would be worth it to explain it in a video if it's something worth worrying about or not. If your getting fitted it is not something that is discussed if ever. Your thoughts?

+Kevin bedell defo peak height plays its part.
+Kevin bedell low spin high launch can equal knuckle balls is the worry.
Mark Crossfield sorry I can never see the word knuckle ball with seeing it in Coach's KNUCKLEBALL voice!
Just to contribute on is it a 7i or should we have lofts on bottom of clubs debating point raised in the stream, I am in 2 minds on this. Lower loft, lower launch and lower spin yeah. But check the peak height! The TM's are going higher so in long irons the TM's will be beasts
Interested to see if there's any changes between psi vs p-790 😉
can you please do a titleist mb vs mp18 test?
thanks
Hi marks pls reply. Which one would you advise for an improving 6 handicapper who lacks spin and height??
Wondering why there was the lengthy chat about loft but not about peak height. Looked like the height was actually higher with the 790 despite the lower loft. Which in theory should mean that it will stop just as easily. Interesting

Should’ve been matched against the stronger lofted Titleist Ap1 which I game as it gives me extra distance for us short hitters.
didn't tm have similar foam tech in there icw5 irons back in the day?
I demoed the whole line today tmb are good ap2 are good ap3 did not feel very good and the mb was perfect
Wouldn't ap3 is better comparison to 790?
Maybe, but I know I'm down to these two clubs. This comparison helps decide which range of club to pick. I'm leaning towards the P790 because I want a little help with my common thin strikes. Depending on the reality of the help, I'd rather pick the AP2 for every other reason.
Douchy69 im having the same problem. What did you end up choosing and how has your experience been?
Had a fitting with Taylormade using the 790 last week. Hit the "7" iron well and long, like a 6 iron really. The fitter said, having tried multiple shafts that ideally he would like to weaken the loft for me?? That is to make it like every other reasonably lofted manufacturers 7 iron, Not impressed! +Mark Brown we will. But AP2 and p790 are two clubs people are looking at trying. 👍👍
Unfortunately your bias against tm has ruled you out of fair comparison testing. Would love to get back to enjoying your videos again. What was the height of those strikes again? Good luck.
Happy for you to not watch Bruh as you have clearly not understood this. 👍👍👍
I am totally on the banks offset wagon I'm a 28 hcp and have played rocket bladez tour std fit and now play MP15'S fitted in know I'm missing out on forgivness but find that I try to over ride the offset of the club

So in effect Taylor Made are taking my Traditional lofted 6 iron and Stamping 7 iron on it!
But you are getting 6iron numbers with the p790 it’s s going further, and higher, with a shorter club length. Even though it has a stronger loft.. isn’t that the tech doing that?
No
How about P750 Proto vs AP2?
Probably should've done P790 8 iron (35 Degree) vs the AP2 7 iron (34 Degree).
Also, is it just me or does the sole of the P790 look much larger/wider than the AP2?
Michael Pasvantis I believe they only get 4, 7 and p from each set. So that probably wouldn't happen unless they get them from a shop
Mark thanks for showing the review. Just a feeling I got watching it was the camera should be mounted on a tripod at a distance we can see everything as though we were standing there watching you guys. In other words just leave it alone the viewing was lousy, difficult to watch.
@markcrossfield Under Armour now instead of Foot Joy?
Dan , what Irons are you currently bagging ? You were playing Cobra ?
Hi Jason Purk, yeah I'm playing the Cobra King Forged iron. Lovely 😊
The new Titleist MB-T has a hollow head, like the Taylormade P790. Those two should go head-to-head.
790 direct competitor is TMB not AP2
Surely you knew the difference in lofts beforehand, so why not compare the Titleist AP2 6 iron from the start
I think you are not comparing comparable irons...P790 Vs AP3 would have been a better comparison. Check the lofts of AP2 against AP3 and the P790. JM2pW brah

AP3 might be good compare to 790. Ap2 to 770.

I dont really see how these two clubs should be compared in the same class, "players iron" vs "distance iron"
TaylorMade is great if you want the face to cave in and the slots to pop-out.
OMG! 0 dislikes yet, where is Rick Shiels thumb down?
BW 5 bastards have turned up
I don't see those two as natural rivals. T-MB's would have been a better match-up to the 790's. IMHO.
Memo my outfits with Raymondo
Perhaps in these tests it would help if we could find someone who hits it straighter than Dan! 🙄
#offset
Come on Mark. Nobody cares about this. Give us what we want. P790 v 0311T. Settle this argument for us!
see rick sheils, he's done it, much better
Get a microphone that doesn’t sound like you’re talking into a tin can
From a watchability point of view I would ditch these live sessions. It just comes across as very repetitive and redundant. Spin rates and launch angles are usually going to be around the same anyway relative to the club. Maybe a live coaching session with a student would be more interesting.
Uk kills
