- Thanks for growing with us!
Today we are planting a rose that Eric has had his eye on for a long time. Bathsheba by @david_austin_roses is a lovely apricot short climber that deserves a perfect spot in our garden.
Using some flat trellises from a big box store we are going to create a larger support for our climbing rose that is held to the fence in a secure way that doesn't damage the fence.
Follow us as we go step by step from preparing the rose, planting the rose, building the trellis, installing the trellis, training the rose, and adding some irrigation. We a featuring our favorite @Coastofmaine planting soil as well

Omg love the watering of the rose!! We all get it on the leaves%!
Yes we do!
You guys are so much fun. Do your neighbors ever come over to visit and see your garden? 🌼
Sometimes!
You guys I just love that tool you have for attaching the rose, I got to get me one!!!
I put a link right in the description!
Love the way you use a big box store trellises for a big impact in your garden! Also, the taping gun is awesome.😊
It's the BEST
Your garden is spectacular 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I could watch this video all day.
Just stunning 😊.
Thanks so much 😊
Totally enjoyed this episode fellas! Lots of laughs and learning along the way.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love your show and follow your U tube channel , great Job 😄
Thank you very much!
I learn so much when you show how you plan, plant, prune and care for plants. Love these kinds of videos. Thanks for bringing us along. I have garden envy.
Glad you like them!
Such a gorgeous rose! And Eric and the sawfly larvae made me chuckle 😂 Thanks for sharing your beautiful garden with us!
haha thanks for watching
Lovely! Your garden is gorgeous. I am going to copy your trellis idea - 3 trellis to make as one wide trellis!! Thank you for sharing your ideas and inspiration.
Please do!
Thanks for the tutorial on training a climber. Love the hydrangea room!
Thank you!
You guys 😍❣️
So, I have taken your inspiration of using the same 3 trellises zip-tied and added a DA ‘Strawberry Hill climbing rose and a ‘Deborah Dahl Vancouver’ clematis with it just about a month ago. My husband’s sister, Debbie, pasted away last fall and he & I are planting a memorial garden.
I am so glad you were able to make our little system work. I adore Strawberry Hill. That is such a sweet idea to have a memorial garden
Gentlemen, good morning. Love the rose and its placement, once again perfection! I can’t believe you moved the copper mushrooms, they added such a touch of whimsy. You were both so funny today, really enjoyed this video.
No worries, they didn't go far! We only moved them to plant
I just planted two of Bathsheba early spring this year on my trellises! I've only seen one open bloom so far, buds appearing, she's gooooooorge! Thank you so much for showing the whole process, from trimming the climber to the trellises!
We had such a fun time putting it all together
@@growformegardening everything on your property is so lovely, no matter what you do!
@@mytigereyez Thank you!
I love "this is real life, this is our garden". 😊
100%
Your garden is so beautiful! I bought an Olivia Rose Austin from the same sale, so excited to see how she grows. I am very new to gardening but have teasing Georgia and Charles Darwin Roses I purchased last summer from faddegons that are very healthy and thriving so far this year. Thank you for sharing the Coast of Maine planting mix. I purchased some after seeing you use it in previous video and have been using it when planting anything new.
That's wonderful! Coast of Maine stuff is the best. I'm so happy that Faddegon's has all the different kinds.
Thanks for showing the tapener and how it works...never saw any of the green tape on any of your plants before
We try to hide it as best we can
I love the, “ this our life, this is our garden”. When referring to getting water on the rose leaves 😂 you tell ‘em! The rose looks amazing, it’s such a beautiful colour! Looking forward to seeing updates 🌱😍
So true!
Love to see the rose as it climbs and how you position the branches. thank you.
We will keep you updated!
Thank you for the video. Your garden looks amazing. I am sure the new rose will settle in well. You both were funny today.
haha we had a lot of fun
Love the rose bush you planted today. It’s beautiful!! Who does the weeding in your garden? Your garden is absolutely beautiful. The prettiest I’ve ever seen. Love your channel. Can’t wait to see what you do next
Wow! Thank you. We both do the weeding, keeping up on it makes light work of the chore.
I really wish you had the link to the trellis. I’m going to go search for it. I love how you displayed them. I’m in heaven every time I watch your videos and your instagram is to die for! Lot of hard work but worth it.
I have tried and tried but I can’t get a link for that exact trellis!
Another great video guys!! I am so glad you all share your garden with us!! I’m learning so, so much!!
Awesome!!!👏🏼 ❤ 🌹
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing. Gorgeous New rose, love the tips &humor😊🌳
Thanks so much 😊
I just bought Wollerton Old Hall to train on my fence!
You will love it!
Your rose will add extra beauty to your fence. I am anxious to see it get established and producing beautiful flowers. Thanks for sharing. See you next time.
By this time next year will be a whole different plant
Is anyone else struggling to hear Eric? Can hear Christopher just fine. Thanx for all your videos guys! Have had fun watching you.
Sorry about that. Our audio is in stereo right now. I'm learning about sound stuff...this is not my area of expertise!
Those clips look great i'm going to try them.
Easiest solution!
I just love gardening with you two! It make it fun to watch you two come to agree and different ideas😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh thank you!
The rose stapler is AMAZING!!!!
Best tool ever!
You guys are ABSOLUTELY correct to remove the tag from the rose cane. A Rosarian I follow says no matter what if you leave a tag on a cane that cane will ALWAYS die. Always..Good job guys!!! 😊
I always thought it would end up strangling the rose when it grew
I am in awe with the tenacity you both put into your landscape ! ❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much 😀
I have Bathsheba and once I figured out how to prune a climbing rose, she was outstanding!
That's great!
Omg I loves the Roses and the Fox mittens absolutely gorgeous, you both doing amazing jobs
Yay! Thank you!
❤OMG that tool is amazing and of that rose is beautiful too ❤
It really is!
@@growformegardening do you have the link to this cool tool? Also, would be nice if they had a clear color vs green tape. lol
@@MsDisnyfan If the Tapener takes standard tie tape it comes in clear and also brown. You can usually find it at irrigation or ag supply stores
The link is in the description! Clear tape would be ideal!
When Eric bought it they only offered the green so we have a rather large amount. It will be green for us for awhile
I love David Austin Roses, and I love your collection! Bathsheba looks gorgeous.
It's a great addition
She is absolutely stunning. Pictures can't do her justice And I haven't had any trouble with disease so far. Probably a little insect damage But she still carries on. You will love her!
Awesome!!!!
It’s going to be beautiful guys! Thanks for the video! Have a great day! ❤
Our pleasure!
So happy you shared…I am wanting to plant a climbing rose. 😊
You should!
…really really tight… 7:29ish -> so funny! Looking forward to seeing this grow! 🥀
hahaha
Love the ‘riveting’ music you added for the zip tie work! 😅
hahah me too
Thanks for the tutorial. I just planted Bathsheba a few months ago as a bare root. She is just now starting to grow longer canes and have a few blooms. So pretty! 🧡
Wonderful! I'm excited for our first blooms
We would love to move by you guys. You’re so entertaining and the information you give regarding gardens it is very informative. you would always be welcome to come over :)
Thanks so much!
That’s a cool tool for the rose!😊
Its so easy. We carry it around to use on all the climbers
Hey guys, thank you for the video. Do you have a video on choosing roses that will thrive and have less issues? I'm learning alot. Appreciate you guys.
We don’t have anything specific about choosing those roses, but we do tend to look for healthier roses
I love the creamy climbing rose, I'm going to see if I can find one at my garden center. the side of my shed needs something pretty added to it. I like the taping tool you used and will get one as well. It sure beats tying all those strings to my plants. Thanks for the great video.
It's a really awesome tool
It takes me an insane amount of control not to want to tie everything down with that tie machine. Tie machines and label makers...LOVE!
Oh it is very difficult
You have amazing weather and soil❤ in Austin,tx, we have horrible soil and 102 weather with high index❤ everything has to grow in the pot, unless you bring monster machine to dig wholes❤ That's why, gardening is not enjoyable here😢
Well that's no fun.
It's going to be beautiful! I'd love to hear more about companion planting roses with clematis and what varieties you suggest.
So far we have two roses with clematis. I am going on suggestions from Brushwood Nursery for the types that play well
My favorite color of DA rose! Curious if you ever have issues with dirt/debris/ bugs plugging your drip tubing since you put the emitters directly into the supply line and leave the end of the 1/4” open? (I use a straight coupler to attach my 1/4” to the supply line and attach the emitter to the end of the 1/4” at the base of the plant) Good information on planting deep for those of us in colder zones.
Honestly we haven't had any trouble. I used to do it the way you describe but I ran out of straight couplers!
I so enjoy you both and your garden! What big box did you buy the trellis from please? It looks fabulous. I love how it is the same set up in your west garden! 🌷
We found those at Home Depot I think.
Cheap CVS chocolate dirt LoL. That description will forever live rent free in my brain 😂Question: do you deadhead the Teasing Georgia rose (or even the new rose) ?
Oh absolutely. It makes a big difference
Can you or your viewers recommended a climbing rose that can take a bit less sun? Thanks for starting my day with joy.
Ooh this is a question for the community. We haven't had to look for something specific to a lower light situation yet
Love this! Would love to know where you get the markers like you have for the Eustacia Vye rose!
Eric got me a bunch of those for my birthday from Etsy
@@growformegardening Thanks! I had gotten some metal ones from big box store and my sister stamped them for me. But they are already rusting thru. Yours look nice !
❤
🌸🌸
You guys are the best! I have 2 questions…how do you control sawfly ( loved that you left that in by the way!😂) and we had a bad hailstorm come through last night that shredded my hostas. Would you cut them back to the ground or leave them?🇨🇦😢🇨🇦
Hail damage is just a choice of whether you want to look at the holes or not. For sawfly try Captain Jacks' Deadbug brew!
@@growformegardening Ok thanks, all 50 are damaged so not happiness. I’ll see how it goes this next week. It sure put in perspective how devastating it would have been for our predecessors who relied on gardens for subsistence! 🇨🇦🌹🇨🇦
Oh that's rough. Maybe just cut some of the worst leaves out and let them reflush
Always cut above three leaves to encourage proper growth. Water at the root not the top
I've heard three, I've also heard to cut back to a set of five leaves. As long as the rose stays happy I'll trim wherever it wants!
Love your videos.
I bought myself a climbing rose this spring.
I live in Canada and our winters get really bad.
When planting my rose is it ok to burry the crown of my rose?
I have planted a handful of roses in my life and they all died. I always was under the impression the crown has to be above the ground. But after watching you plant your rose and how you said you plant it deep that made me think that is why I keep losing mine.
Is it ok for me to plant the crown under?
Thank you in advance and I always look forward to your videos.
Absolutely. You can plant it a few inches underground to keep it protected
@@growformegardening awesome. Thank you. And I love the trellis idea.
June morning, cup of hot coffee, and watching your videos - priceless! I don’t grow roses (I cannot seem to control the bugs here on Cape Cod) but I love seeing them in your garden. NOTE: You can never move!
Yeah I don't think we are going anywhere anytime soon! We are however going to be on the Cape for the hydrangea festival! We will be speaking at Hyannis Country Gardens on the 6th!
It works!
What are the methods for preventing black spot attacks on rosebushes? I once had rosebushes that were infested with black spots.
Lots of airflow. Clean the leaves up from the ground around them in spring to make sure any affected leaves are gone. There are some spray you can use too
@@growformegardening Thank you, I will try one again.
100 ft hose reels are available from other brands because I own one which is why I didn't purchase Hoselink.
Good to know
Why do you not plant rose in the middle of the trellis? I noticed the same on other trellis.
The best flowering comes from having horizontal main canes. By planting it on the edge we can train some of the canes up and over nicely
Kinda off topic question but when did you start your Insta and how did you grow your following?
Instagram started during the pandemic I’d say. In the Fall of 2022 is when it started to grow organically.
@@growformegardening That's awesome, tremendous growth in a short period of time. Especially here on RUclips! It's a testament to your hardwork! Any tips for someone who may be starting off their gardening IG? Someone = me lol!
Honestly the key has been sharing beautiful pictures and making reels with nice music. RUclips is a whole new game
@@growformegardening Thank you! I'm very late in the IG game. Did you make your IG public when you started? Do you add hashtags?
It was really just a journal of the garden when we started. Over time hashtags came in to play.
