Green Killing Machine UV Sterilizer

Literally the simplest and the most practical solution i've heard and seen in the last 13 hours of searching for an answer. Tysm ♡
So glad it helped!! 🌊🤙🏾
Hydrogen peroxide and Poly-Fil would’ve solved your problem a long time ago, hassle-free. No wonder aquarists and fishkeepers are increasingly just going with Polynesian Style aquascaped aquariums (look it up on RUclips). The underlying issue is that blue-green algae isn’t algae at all. It’s actually bacteria called Cyanobacteria. That’s why algae killing/algae control chemicals or machines are hit-or-miss, whereas antiseptics like hydrogen peroxide and antibiotics like API E-Mycin are the only 100% guaranteed solutions to green water. Don’t pour the H2O2 directly above a fish as it will kill it. Dilute in a pitcher of tank water then pour it in. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Great video. Direct and to the point, thank you.
Thank you!
Good to see this video up to address this and what you did! Wow poor maintenance guy was way off haha. Here’s what I do to combat algae. Algae is caused by excess nutrients, lack of CO2, and excessive lighting. You can use strong lights but run them specific amounts of time. I use powerful light in high tech tanks but only run for 8 hours a day at the same time every day. My CO2 injection starts 3 hours before lights come on and I dose ferts at that time everyday. Not enough ferts can cause algae too. Then at 2pm my lights come on for 8 hours. Consistency means a lot. Also planting heavily eliminates algae growth as well as good circulation. Just a few plants and excess nutrients will create algae. Tank cycling with planted tanks is also one thing algae comes from. Eventually when plants start growing well after they acclimate it goes away. I use algae exit to kill of algae during those times. No chemical filtration in my filters either to help. You probably got the bacteria bloom after cleaning that much due to good bacteria loss creating ammonia and nitrite spikes but enough bacteria to still bloom. I leave those to ride themselves out as it is part of the nitrogen cycle although I run an inline UV on all my aquariums. Sad thing is not a lot of info out there on this glad to see you made a video addressing it. Lots of theories on how it happens too haha.
James’ Aquariums and Aquascaping wow thanks so much for this detailed breakdown! And yes I’m sure I had a combination of issues that contributed to the initial growth including lights being ran too long. I’ll be sure to share your method with others still struggling. & I just subscribed 🌊🤙🏾
The Coral Doctor awesome thank you! I’m just getting a channel built and it’s not the best but I have ideas haha. Yeah it’s all a learning curve and if we don’t help one another out who will? I have found most aquarium stores are mildly knowledgeable at best. Especially in the US. I learn a lot from the European guys as they are much more apt to share the tricks. Especially green aqua and George Farmer.
Thanks for your insight that was pretty helpful, little more helpful then asking someone to wipe out their tank and start over.... haha
Fantastic presentation! 👍
Thank you!
Not only so smart but very beautiful!!!!! Keep up the great work!!!! 🤩😍😘🥰🥰🥰🥰😋
Just plant Pothos plants underwater ( you dont need soil ) they will remove any algae and keep your tank clear with low ammonia and pH , also put some of those fishs who eat algae and thats it .. iv been doing this method for a long time now and Sorry for my bad English. good luck ..
Thanks not sure if you saw the entire video but I fixed the problem 🤗
I have massive pothos in my tanks and still get algae and green water. It's not a solution, but does improve water quality.
@@alexiscondit898
Just turn off the light let it on only for 6hrs or less if u need it ..
Bacterial bloom is common and changing water will not solve the problem. The tank is holding suspended bacterail til it reaches its cycle and will clear up with few days on its alone
Yes, but when algae is excessive water changes are recommended with proper treatment. Especially when physical algae builds up inside. It has to be removed, it will not dissolve on its own.
@@thecoraldoctor how can i send u photo of my tank that just turned cloudy after few months was crystal clear
@@thecoraldoctor I'm having this problem right now.
My Chinese algae eater is dead.
I've just changed out half the water.
Replaced it.
I will change more tomorrow.
It is so dang cloudy and mucus-y.
The water was so white this morning but I had to go to work.
As soon as I got back I changed the water, but it's still so cloudy and I've nowhere to put my fishes.
I just have to hope that they can weather the storm.
🙏
Simple cure as well as prevention would be to get your fingers into stirring the gravel around when you vacuum the bottom with the gravity vacuum. My problem is not green water, but my stones that I use for decorations and my plastic plants are all displaying a green coating. I know its because of the algae wafers i put in for the pleco and my catfish. I’m thinking to stop using the wafers. I’m welcoming any ideas or tips. I only use 3 mini wafers per day. Plus I’m using a chemical to try to control algae growth as well.
Great feedback! Thanks for sharing!
I’m also looking for advice. Can you read english, or do you let the auto-responder do the work?
Hi guys what brand of uv light do you recommend? thanks in advance
The uv sterilizer I used was the green killing machine. I ordered it off of Amazon, but you can find it at select aquarium stores. Keep in mind I had to remove the chunks of algae for it to work. Hope this helps!
I just had a bacteria bloom happen to my tank a few days ago. It happened while I was sleeping at night. It was fine before I went to sleep, the next morning I woke up, my tank was like milk instead of water and everything was dead, not a single fish survived. Also the water smelled like a stink bomb, it was stinky as hell, it smelled like seachem prime but 5x worse lol. During these past few days, I did water changes and did everything I could trying to find out where the problem lies, but the tank would eventually turn completely white again and smelled really bad. In the end I traced the problem back to the canister filter. I smashed the motor compartment since there was no way to open it based on how they designed it and inside there was a few dead nerite snails and their deteriorating shells. I suspect it most likely got there by crawling into the hole on the surface skimmer. Just today I went out to buy a HOB filter that has a UV light inside(it's called GRECH CBG-500), and the water has started to cleared up these 5 hours.
Thank you very much 🙏🏼
You’re welcome! Hope it was helpful 🌊🙏🏾
how did your fish survive a 100% water change? I have this problem but cant put my fish through the stress of a 100% change...
I did a very slow transition from the quarantine tank with some of the same water back into the tank. Slow acclimation - but yes you can run the risk of too much stress. Good luck!
Will the UV light kill all bacteria including benefical bacteria ?
Binil C it can, but it isn’t recommended to run it 24/7. If you’re concerned about losing good bacteria you can always supplement it when it’s off. I recommend Brightwell Aquatics 🙌🏾🌊🤙🏾
Technically the answer is yes it will kill good bacteria but in real practice no it will not kill off your good bacteria. The reason is when there is an algae bloom or bacteria bloom both the algae and the bacteria is suspended in the water. The bacteria and algae that is suspended in the water will be killed by the UV. The good bacteria is normally in your filter media and rocks. very little is floating through the water. The UV can only kill the bacteria that passes through the UV.
I went throughh the SAME THING
Should have just stirred up the bottom gravel while it was still in some tank water and you could have possibly prevented the bacteria bloom.
I just had my very first algae bloom in a year of doing this hobby.
Awww sorry to hear that! I hope it cleared up!
I’m struggling with a bacteria bloom, it’s very bad to the point it looks like mud water like I can’t even see my fish. This all occurred after I did a 80% water change the other day and I’m worried it won’t go away. I’m also worried if I change the water again it will make it so much worse. Do I just wait out the process?
Post updates
Oh no ! So sorry to hear this. If the tank is that bad you may need to hire a professional. Not sure what to say if the tank looks like mud. Hope it worked out!
@@thecoraldoctor I got an aquarium light and now I can see the white milkiness I am going to the pet store soon so they can test the water and help me start a new cycle.
I would recommend freshwater clams.
Cover your fish tank with no light for a week. Algae needs sunlight
Amaño shrimp clean what otros didn’t,they left my tanks so clean from algae!!
Yeah giving people advice to completely wipe their tank out and start over isn't going to happen 99 percent of the time so that's not really helpful for someone with a heavily planted tank or a bunch of fish with no where to put them. UV sterilizer on for 8 hours a day for 10 days without disturbing the soil should work fine. And I saw someone else mention it can be too much nutrients not enough co2 and a lot of light. I came here because I have a new 45 day old tank with tons of plants, no co2 and I dose micro and macro fertilizer. And as of now I only have one tiny fish in it. So it makes sense why I had the bloom using that information.
Hey! Thanks for the comment. I posted pictures of my tank to show my set up, so I could see how if you had tons of plants or tons of fish this may not be the best method for you. This was a last resort video that worked for me, but of course there are other options. The UV sterilizer did not work on it's own because I literally had an entire bed of algae under the rocks so it was too thick and consuming my tank to the degree that it overpowered the sterilizer. I'm sure you would agree that blooms may be caused fo a variety of reasons. Glad you were able to solve your bloom!
@@thecoraldoctor Havne't solved it yet, it just started, but I am going to start dosing flurish excel , some other videos said that might work. I havent been using it since my hogwart was dying and I read somewhere that might be why. So we will see. I have never had good luck with planted tanks and I figured out oh you have to dose it with micro and macro fertilizer! So now here I am doing that and this happens. So im still trying to figure it out.
I m having same problems
Oh no! Hope it worked out!
I guess I wish I could do that w my tank but I can not. it's too big and has too many shrimp and plants. and I have many other tanks that are crystal clear. I could be a substrate think like you mentioned. anyways all the plants and shrimp and a couple fish are happy as heck, they love it. I would just like to see inside that tank. stupid human right? hahah saludos desde Costa Rica :)
Update !? I have the same problem if i cut the light the plants will die with the algae
but if i do this, my fish will die. i have about 13 fish in a 37. i'm afraid they'll die if i totally clear out my tank
I could see the concern. You can always slowly transition them into a temporary tank so they do not go into shock, and slowly switch small amounts of the water
What caused it
Plentiiface_ Young hey! Usually excessive algae growth or nutrients in a tank. Sometimes people have lights on too long with plants in their tanks that can contribute to it occurring as well. I had a lot of hidden algae growth that I couldn’t see, and after enough was present it bloomed
But you are also rinsing the good bacteria out.
& that’s the awesome thing about aquariums! You can always introduce or manipulate the tank to add bacteria! Cheers!
Are you reading off of a teleprompter or something?
Your service guy needs a bit of education.
Agreed! That was the last service with him!
🤔 You didn’t have enough substrate in your aquarium to house beneficial bacteria. You also most likely feed your fish to much. A very small amount once a day or every other day is adequate. There should also be some live plants in your tank ( several of them ) to filter your water. You had too many nutrients in your water.
This is what will keep your aquarium from getting algae. 👍🏽
