    FF speaking facts right here. Every time I set up a tank algae comes in for about a month until the plants grow in and take all the excess nutrients. At night plants give off CO2 (CO2 in the water is turned into Carbonic acid (H2CO3)) and so the pH shifts towards the acid.
    They use the stored sugar as an alternative energy source to the light to perform the growing and 'burning' this sugar causes CO2 to be released. Meaning plants will grow at night and give of C02 for tomorrows photosynthesis period. Look at your dwarf lilies and banana plants before you turn the lights off, the plant will have grown many inches throughout the night. I call em "night growers" :)

      If you get B-Grade moss balls it's pretty cheap, and the big ones are more hollow. You can cut them open, flatten them, and attach them to almost anything with aquarium safe superglue. Glass wouldn't be ideal, but you could attach hobby mesh with suction cups or just gluing it to one of those fake rock walls.

    What do you suggest I with a 10 gal tank that already has gravel? It’s very small gravel from New Zealand. Should I replace the gravel? Which would be tedious, but I’d do it if you suggest I do so. Or can I just add sand on top of the gravel? The reason I went with gravel is because I’ve read articles and watched videos stating sand isn’t good for Betta fish. But I couldn’t go with the big and ugly “common” gravel.
    And after watching just two of your videos I have an overwhelming feeling that you know exactly what you’re talking about.😉
    You had me at “don’t cycle your tank”.😂
    I’ve never believed in cycling, and my multiple tanks I’ve had and have now were never cycled. I was told my Betta fish were going to die.🤣
    Marcus has been with me a year and still going strong. Leopold has been with me for 6 months and is doing just fine as well, lol.

    Gravel is the worst substrate one can use in an aquarium. A lot of crap gets trapped underneath. I have seen many novices start off using gravel, and they wonder why fishes keep dying even when they clean the tank often. Well, unless you take the trouble of taking all the gravel out, the bottom doesn't really get clean enough. Pool filter sand is the best I've tried.

    So would you say a split photoperiod of say 5 hours light, 4 hours darkness, 5 hours light is actually not a great thing? I read it helps replenish CO2 and aids plant growth, and I'm not concerned about algae growing but I just don't want it killing the plants....would you say it's more beneficial to do 10 hours straight of light and letting what happens happen? Wouldn't CO2 levels be really low after 5 hours of lights being on? As you can tell I've done a lot of googling and need some father fish knowledge to solve this lighting mystery

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  Год назад +2

      The idea of a split cycle is based on a 12 hr growth cycle with algae. Ostensibly it breaks the algae growth cycle. That may be the case but if it is true then all other plants are similarly affected. That means a broken cycle will inhibit plant growth. Maybe, but it most certainly is marginal. If you have good reason to do so then by all means. Personally I prefer to leave lights on 24/7 wherever possible. Light intensity does not begin to approach sunlight levels and plants do not require dark, nor, for that matter, do fish.

    Well, started a new aquarium 8 days a go, 1 inch of dirt, well actually it is humus for flowers, than about 2 inch of sand. Have 4 snails for now (quite big ones, orange :) a lot of aquarium plants and a few from the nearby river. There is algae on the glass but not much and I don't mind 'em it will be a great start for the next step and this is getting some algae eaters. The water is pretty clear. I have an old branch in it, and it can be that is a bit of tannin in water and maybe some floating algae, but I would like to have a piece of nature in my room not an aquarium, you know what I mean. Big external filter (not modern, the old type one, with gravel and sponge). No mud in the water. The snails seem to be quite happy, they took some leafs from the plants but maybe this was not needed ones, who knows :) snail business hahaha. I'm not going to take out these leafs btw. they will stay in the aquarium. I wonder when will be good time to start with adding fishes? I am thinking to start with some algae eaters than after some time with guppies and something similar and with some "dirt eaters" You know that funny little vacuum cleaners on the bottom :), So the questions,,, what do you think when will be a good time to start with adding fishes? Is it anything that I have to pay a special attention? Or just, let it be and see what will happen?

    I’ve had problems with black beard algae for a long time, because it keeps invading plants. I have tried so many different things, but it seems resilient. I reckon that because my ph is 7.6-8, and the higher the ph, the harder it gets for plants to get CO2 because it forms carbonates instead. But BBA seems to thrive in high pH, because they can get that CO2 from carbonates more easily than plants. So I guess because my tap water is 7.6 and I have Tanganyika fish living in 60 gallon, I can never get rid of BBA. BBA seems to be a different sort of algae then others, because I never get any other algae blooms. Just BBA slowly growing no matter what.

    Thank you for posting this information. I watched this video because algae is the current issue in my four month old 10 gallon tank. Likely, I've overfed the tank in a desire to assure that the fish were getting enough. Maybe you could do a video on when enough is enough :-) . I'll also need to add that 3 inch sand bottom you recommend. Currently I have a 1.5 inch gravel bottom. Thus far I've replaced dead plants three times. So I've increased the light duration to 8 hours as you recommend. Once the sand is added I'll try again (with cheap plants). Not sure yet how that will work out. I do 5 gallon water replacements but I'll reduce that to a 10% as you recommended. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I'm glad that you are recovering from your illness.

Looks awesome - beautiful bright green, looks like a field of grass. However it kills all my plants. I assume there is no way to keep both algae and plant groth controlled? I got some snails and an armada of Armano shrimp but they rather clean the rocks or the filter instead of the leaves. Is there any way to slow down the growth of just the algae?
    Greetings from Germany!

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  4 года назад +2

      Yes. The deep substrate, done properly, reduces nutrients in the water column. This will reduce algae growth. It may also be the reason your plants are dying, insufficient nutrition in the substrate and lack of anaerobic activity due to shallow bed.
