MD thank you so much - I've just discovered blue/green algae in my tank and I was absolutely gutted. You've cheered me up and given me the ideas and inspiration to re-do the tank as soon as we are allowed to go back to fish shops. I am going to have better flow, less built up areas and use loads of the plants you get from Tropica. I was feeling rather like a failure, but seeing your video today was perfect timing and has really cheered me up. Thank you SO much 😗💗👍👍
Perfect timing with this one! Just managed to solve an algae problem in my bigger tank, only have the green water problem left now. Already tried 2 50% water changes but it didn't change anything, it just came back so now trying some products instead. Thank you for these great tips on stopping algae growth!
I started a small aquarium (60 x 28 x 28 cm) after Christmas. It's a cold water aquarium standing in my living room (20-21 °C). I went against the rules because I introduced my fish immediately because I had them in an aquarium outside which already had ice on it. The fish are 10 White Cloud Mountain minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) and 6 indigenous ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) that I will put in my pond when finished. I planted my aquarium with fast-growing and slow-growing plants (Echinodorus grisebachii, E. paniculatus, Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Ludwigia perennis, L. glandulosa, Hygrophila polysperma, and Heteranthera zosterifolia). Of course it took some time for the plants to start growing, the fast growers kicked in quicker than the slow ones. Diatom algae developed on the aquarium walls and on the leaves, but nothing crazy. I bought 10 Amano shrimp but they couldn't keep up. Then I introduced an indigenous plant: hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum). This plant is native to most of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. It excretes substances that inhibit the growth of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), known as allelopathy. This plant had to start up from turions which are a kind of dormant plant parts that overwinter. Two weeks later these turions started growing and it grows really fast, up to 10 cm per day. Now my aquarium is completely free of visible algae. The algae on the walls are completely gone and the algae that were growing on some of the other plant leaves are dead and are eaten by the snails. I will not say it's all because of this plant because it's now 5-6 weeks after I started the aquarium so it is much more balanced. I assume the internal Eheim Biopower filter is now active, so it's probably a combination of factors but I find it striking the algae all vanished after the hornwort started growing like crazy.

Very informative video! Circulation and dead pockets makes so much sense. I have had issues with algae and will definitely check that in my four tanks. Thank you!
I recently got back into the hobby and you’re my mentor! Awesome awesome content! Thanks for your hard work just to make these amazing informational videos!
09:36 So this take is working perfectly and always looks amazing. Time to change it up! I laughed so hard, but I get it! I couldn't stop laughing at 12:41. I love this channel so much.
I've had a 5 gallon for more than 6 months. It has one betta fish and hitchhiking seed shrimp. The filter is very little flow for the betta. I've never had like any algae tbh 👀 my light was originally on for 6 hours then I increased it to 8 hours an hour at a time with a lot of time inbetween (like a few weeks to make sure the increase hasnt put off something and if algae does start to grow, I know the variable that caused it was the light). I also dose with seachem excel every other day, a bit of potassium once a week and flourish twice a week. I have no idea what it is, I think I'm just really lucky haha. Redid my old 37 gal. I'm not sure if I'll be so lucky this time haha (sometimes the sun gets to it and causes a lot of tough green algae on the glass).
Great tanks ! Im back to the aquaristic now ( 4 th time in my life....first was 1985, second 1993, third...2001 ) :-)))) What i see today is more possibilities for this hobby than in the past. Great LED lights, better time for choose a water plants, fishes and shrimps (!) :-)))). I hope new adventure is just beginning :-)!!! Best regards from Poland :-)))
Great tips! I love your channel. I have my own 50 gallon dirted tank and I’m going crazy over the diatoms sticking to the leaves of almost every plant I have. I have it outdoors but it doesn’t receive that much direct sunlight. I recently restarted the tank and I’ll see if plucking the bad infested leaves out the trick.
Wow, I cannot believe how successful you have become! I've been watching you for around a year now, and every video is inspirational and exciting! Keep up the wonderful work! I cannot WAIT for the next one!! :D
very nice vid. We have to keep in mind when you film your tanks, you show them at their best. I believe it is all kind of lil things we do everyday that makes it less bothersome when it's maintenance day. Take care !!!
Great video, MD! This reminds me that I need to move some floaters into my experimental terrestrial moss tank, as that thing just exploded with algae over the last day or so. The Angelfish tank is looking sick, man! Can't wait to see some more livestock introduced. :D
I love some algae, especially just the green dust surface algae, I adjust my lights to where I just get a little bit of green growing on the rocks it’s like having plants in there it sucks up nutrients and shrimp love it and snails love it. One of my best tricks, buy cheap lights, aqua need full spectrum lights for 20 bucks off of eBay will grow most easy and medium grade plants pretty well they might grow a little slower but I leave my lights on 13-16 hours a day and almost never have problems if the snails aren’t keeping up with it I just take an hour off the timer and it fixes itself. The stringy stuff I find usually is in the high flow area I find if I can disperse that flow it tends to go away. On the tanks with glass lids the algae that grows under the lights are usually just scrape it off and let it dump into the tank and the snails and shrimp love it and it’s usually gone after a couple days.
In the freshwater tank algae thrives with high blue lighting. I set my blue light output to be no more than 10%, 75% red, 100% all other, @ 6.5 Kelvin. 2.5 hour ramp up, 6 hour full power and 2.5 hour ramp down. And I have no alge problems.
@dnoop_sogg Does Blue Light Cause Algae Growth? Explained April 12, 2023 by Frank E. Ward Blue light is more intense than red light, and it is, therefore, speculated that blue wavelengths may increase photosynthesis in some organisms, leading to more rapid growth. Algae are an unwanted water pollutant. It can ruin the look of our swimming pools and look bad in our ponds. Algae require light to photosynthesize and grow; blue light is particularly effective at promoting their growth. This is why aquariums and fish tanks often use blue lighting to enhance the appearance of plants and coral. It also damages the environment because it consumes nutrients plants need to grow. Here’s what you need to know about does blue light cause algae growth?
Cool, very informative. I’ve had a pretty successful attempt at keeping algae to a minimal in my small 36L tank. I have the light on for roughly 6 hours a day and the tank is located in a pretty cool / shady part of the house (no windows directly on it )
Congrats on your 100k subscribers!! I remember you mentioned that you're so looking forward to this milestone n now that you've finally reached it, you seem to have forgotten all about it. Hmmm i think you were so busy making new videos that you didn't realise you've reach that first milestone. :-)
I just love how clean your tanks are. Been having problems with my goldfish tank and the only solution that I can think of aside from water changes is adding a pleco. But it’s just too aggressive so I end up taking it out once algae’s cleared. :)
What a coincidentally motivating video! Tomorrow is my birthday and my betta's tank has been having b/g algae (cyanobacteria) despite my multiple changes in setup. Think it's time to do a whole re-do like you said. Cheers!
Algae cleanup crew: Otocinclus catfish, Nerite/zebra snails and shrimp. I bought 4 otos for my 15 gallon that had gotten green with hair algae, it carpeted every plant. After just one week they had mowed down all the algae on the lower half of the plants.
Just discovered this channel (Dropping George Farmer that £5 super chat was worth at least one new follower!) and really enjoying the content, always nice to find a good channel with professional looking videos from the UK! With so many open top tanks how do you deal with evaporation/humidity, do you ventilate the fish room? Also, in winter, how do you keep the tanks warm, just normal heaters and relay on your insulation in the shed and have a big electricity bill at the end?
If you have blackboard algea all over your tank what to do it's the first time in 4 years ? But I also enjoy all of your videos and I do like to binge watch them as well
Just get a submersible UV light it does wonders but make sure it's covered.. Or you can have a UV light that's outside with the water pumping through it.. Surprise this wasn't the first thing that should be mentioned and it does not kill beneficial bacteria because the beneficial bacteria would have to go through the light and it's usually on everything basically every surface..
Nerite snails are extremely efficient at eradicating most algae. They don't reproduce in freshwater and they all look very pretty. It's really unfortunate that I can't keep them in my high tech because the CO2 will erode their shells.
For God's sake. Is this the reason? I tried dozens of nerite snails in my tank and the all died in between a month or two. My water is perfect and my fishes are breeding like crazy but every snail is dying. I never heard of that co2 problem related to snails. It would clear something up for me🧐.
Thanks for the video! Question: when I buy live plants, and they come in the weight, can I just put the plant with the weight inside the tank and leave it there for a while without taking it out then putting it in the substrate? 😊👍🏼🐠🌱
Sucks when you have a birchir and clown loach..... cant add snail or shrimp as the clown will eat them and I cant add Ottos or other smaller algae eating fish as the birchir will eat them :S
The best method against hair algae is to spray vinegar. First drain the water halfway out of the aquarium. Plus, use an anti-algae agent containing salicylic acid.
My daughter's glofish tank has green water, and green spots on the glass. I notice the live hornwort and duck weed go nuts with the blue LEDs. I wonder if the algae loves that blue light. My other 5 gallon tank is my favorite tank, never gives me problems... I'll try less light.
I have had success clearing minor green water algae by adding freshwater clams and mussels to the tank. Be careful with the mussels because they dig themselves in, then dig around the entire tank under the sand rather like a giant rabbit snail or trumpet snail. The clams, on the other hand, will stay put.
So thankful that I started watching your videos. Initially it was just because you are so damned cute, but you have answered many questions about our first aquarium. We have algae and weren't sure why one of our little tetras was missing. Was it the Beta or was it the algae. We are learning.
Dear MD , i'm Antonie from the Netherlands i love you video's en Aquascaping a lot to ! And I am sorry to bother you with this, you must have a lot of people that ask you things, but sinds about 8 days now from the moment i received my plants i tried to make an aquarium for my 3 lovely kids that are really crazy about fish anf plants and your video's. But i don't have aquasoil because i could not get it at the time, so i settled for jbl proscape lava in combination with dernelle design stones, raw gravel and in the front al layer of jbl yellow sand but within 8 days i think i have all kinds of alae even though i refresh water every day, test te water and clean the alae as mutch as i can. But i don't know what to do at the moment, i fear my plants are slowly dying and don't know if i still can save them and do it right from whatever i am doing wrong, its my first time and do it for my kids, i did use api tabs to and sachets with substrate underneat and some liquite plant furtilizer of dernelle, have a juwel 121 x 41 x 55 cm tank and using 1 internal juwel bio M and 1 external eheim 2213 pomp both with substrate ultimate from biohome . I don't know where else to turn to before it is to late could i Please send you some pics some how and would you want to look at it and give me some advise do i have to take it all out and start again and can i save the plants or not Please please advise, i wil clean and water change again in a few , alle the tests show no nitrate, nitrit, chlorine, ph between 7.2 and 7.6 kh between 10 and 15, gh >7 and lower then > 14.i don't know what is wrong but i think i have to act fast.😟 may i send you some pic's somehow ? And that you get back at me for some good advise and what to do in your opinion. THanks A LOTT ! And Sorry for the long message 🤗😚😚 If there would be anything else you need the know to tackle my problem, let me know and how to send you the pic's if you want to help me. Awaiting your reply. Dear Regards, Antonie
Great Video... Have questions ..1. I don't see air bubbles generator in any of ur tanks, any specific reason ? do u think air bubbles are not needed? 2. Does ur planted tanks have Co2?
HI HOW DO YOU GET RID OF CYANO BAC I CANT GET RID OF IT I TAKE IT OF WITH A TOOTH BRUSH BUT IT KEEPS COMMING BACK MINE IS ALL SLIM I AM USING A EDEN FILTER WITH A SPRAY BAR SAME MAKE AS OASE MY FISH CANT MOVE FOR THE SLIME AND IT SMELLS I AM USING A TREATMENT CALLED EASY LIFE BLUE ALGE SO I DONT KNOW HOW IT GOT THERE WHEN I SET UP THE THE TANK IT WAS VERY CLEAER BUT NOW ITS A RIGHT MESS I NEED SOME HELP
Hey MD can I suggest you use more of a warmer (orange) tint to your videos colour grading? It will increase the warmth and have a happier feel to your video =)
working on it. my monitor calibration seems to be completely different to everyone elses monitors and phones and i've only just realised.. should be sorted for the next video.
Ha that has happened to me as well (I used to work in video editing). Anyways take care, love your content, cross fingers our uk fish stores reopen soon. I need a pair of Angels!!!
Discussion post! I feel like there is some kind of balance between the types of plants and how that prevents algae. In one planted no filter tank I have, I rarely get algae. In a newer one, I am having lots of algae issues. Assuming that most parameters are near close enough in both tanks, I’m wondering if there is an ideal balance between fast growing stem plants, floating plants, slower growing plants etc. much like the idea of the three sisters agriculture crop of corn squash and beans, there has to be some sort of balance between all of these aquatic plants that is just right. I’m guessing I accidentally got it right on my first tank, but while I have a good variety of plants in my second tank, I guess the balance just isn’t quite right and as a result that tank isn’t doing well. If anyone can weigh in, I’d love to hear what you think!
Hahaha, usually the too much light thing is the problem, but I've just solved mine after months of battling it, and a lot of money spent on solutions, I tried every thing under the sun including co2, blackouts and even barley straw, the solution was longer light hours, I was running 6 hours a day, but its happy at 8, the tank looks awesome now!
I've just got rid of my tank because of algae,I was miserable, the fish were miserable, I've had a tank for 20 years bought a new tank and couldn't control the algae,so I'm having a rest I might set up a tiny tank .thank you, take care .
Two questions asking for your opinion and observations. First, have you noticed a relationship between the type of rock that your 'scape uses and the amount and type of algae that the tank generates? Second, what is the algae situation in your plant storage tanks?
Hey! I’ve been watching your videos for a while and finally decided to take the plunge. My question is this: how often can fish ( betta) handle a tank change?
What about the thick green algae that grows like carpet on plants and substrates? Its not hair algae its a think dark green carpet algea? How do you stop it? I completely cleaned all decor, live plants, sucked up all substrate that algea was adhering too and within a week its back. Lightningis only 30 watts and was cut from 8 to 6 hrs on and algea still over takes everything. All water chemistry is perfect and i even stopped fertilizing the plants.. Api algea killer doesnt work either, i used 2 bottles over past 3 months. What about that algea? What do you do with that type of algea?
I always love your videos! That being said, did you change camera or light -settings for this one? Or am I going colourblind.. The greens were much more dull and bluish than before. Cheers anyway, stay healthy!
Yeah so it turns out I had the colouring all wrong previously and this is how it's supposed to be apparently. Are you not a fan? Honest feedback, what is better?
@@MDFishTanks I'm a fan, but I only really have time for these regular updates for now ❤️ Go back to the old settings, I loved the old green 😍 more magical that way
Good morning!! Having a tank only set up for about 2 weeks now (planted with a few Cory cats for now) I'm watching the tank like a hawk😂.. so I really appreciated this video this video this morning. I also have on hand a small UV filter.. I know it's only good for the actual water that cycles through it... But at what point should I incorporate it into my tank?? Any ideas? I figured I'd run it for a day once a week for maintenance? I have no idea what I'm doing haha.. I know how to work a toothbrush and water changes 😂 but not sure on a UV filter!
Hi, my name is Jerry of all the people on RUclips. Talks about fish tanks, care maintenance, or whatever. You are the one I watched the most. But I have a problem. I have a black beard problem. My fish tank has more beard than I do on my face. Will you please do a video on Blackbeard algae? I'm about to put my whole fish tank over a fire and boil it. It sounds funny but I took all the rocks in my fish tank. Put in a 5 gallon container. Put it on my stove and boiled it for 5 minutes it works. But now Now it's on my plants on my glass on everthing. H E L P ! ! !
Hello, thank you for your many informative videos. I have since the start of my new baccalaureate what seems to be Diatoms, could you tell me how to get rid of them, I have not (or no longer because I was not able to test my water before this morning even while in the meantime I treated with a resin (PhosGuard from Seachem) and if there was any there was no more at the moment I write this comment) when the Silicates which are significant during of the presence of Diatoms I am at> 6 on the JBL color chart which would confirm that they are indeed Diatoms but on the other hand I cannot lower this rate, any idea how to do this?
Duckweed doesn't go crazy in the goldfish aquarium. They love it. Bonus:stops them from getting constipation. Get your duckweed, and dump it in with the goldies.
Like your vidoes alot👍 just a question i see you use alot of API products i recently got API agleafix to help me with my aglea issue but seen more negative feedback then good.
Funny how your betta is so cool and totally not interested in that hose. Mine is getting so curious that at some times, I have to remove him from the tank before cleaning :)
Light does not cause algea. Assuming planted tanks. 99% you have a shortage of one or more nutrients going on. or trouble with the flow. Light dictates the need and if not met the algea are having a blast. Provide good flow and a light exces of ALL nutrients.
I did a huge moss trimming on my no filter tank since it had a lot of hair algae. But now the tank is super murky after trimming. A week later I did a huge water change and the water was not as murky then a few days later it became even more murky than before. And every time I do a water change it never clears up. ://
Yeah it's such a fine balance with no filter tanks. much harder to get right. I'd say just dont water change and leave it to balance. could take weeks.
After about a year in my no filter wutch was amazing and algae free. I got so much hair algie that I can barelly see any plants/fish. I clean up but its takes only some days and its comes back. I am very sure after trying a lot of thing thats my soil is out of nutritients, back then I need to cut my plants nearly weekly, nowadays its takes months to grow. I will give it a good cut, clean up and put as many root tabs as I can. If its works out well, and I don't forget it I will come back and tell it in an other comment.

WHOA!!! That angelfish tank is looking fantastic man!!! Nice work!!

Nice video it is very helpful Thanks Md
No probs.
Cheers for the advice 👍
That is proven to be not true

Does Blue Light Cause Algae Growth? Explained
April 12, 2023 by Frank E. Ward
Blue light is more intense than red light, and it is, therefore, speculated that blue wavelengths may increase photosynthesis in some organisms, leading to more rapid growth.

After watching most of your videos I've realised your arch nemesis is the good 'ole paper towel roll.

Excellent video and some great advice
Just discovered this channel (Dropping George Farmer that £5 super chat was worth at least one new follower!) and really enjoying the content, always nice to find a good channel with professional looking videos from the UK! With so many open top tanks how do you deal with evaporation/humidity, do you ventilate the fish room? Also, in winter, how do you keep the tanks warm, just normal heaters and relay on your insulation in the shed and have a big electricity bill at the end?
Congrats to 100k 🥳🥂🍾 😄
If you have blackboard algea all over your tank what to do it's the first time in 4 years ? But I also enjoy all of your videos and I do like to binge watch them as well
Just get a submersible UV light it does wonders but make sure it's covered..
Or you can have a UV light that's outside with the water pumping through it..
Surprise this wasn't the first thing that should be mentioned and it does not kill beneficial bacteria because the beneficial bacteria would have to go through the light and it's usually on everything basically every surface..
Would love to see you do a Blackwater biotope in the future
Wow, congrats to the 100k 🤓🤗
Real honest insight thanks! One question....do the LEDs not overheat if you cover with tape?
Nerite snails are extremely efficient at eradicating most algae. They don't reproduce in freshwater and they all look very pretty. It's really unfortunate that I can't keep them in my high tech because the CO2 will erode their shells.
For God's sake. Is this the reason? I tried dozens of nerite snails in my tank and the all died in between a month or two. My water is perfect and my fishes are breeding like crazy but every snail is dying. I never heard of that co2 problem related to snails. It would clear something up for me🧐.
I would like to maybe see a bigger dirted tank!
Yeah could be a nice idea...
@@MDFishTanks YEEEESSSS! A big ol' dirted tank. I've only every see under 50 gallons
Thanks for the video! Question: when I buy live plants, and they come in the weight, can I just put the plant with the weight inside the tank and leave it there for a while without taking it out then putting it in the substrate?
😊👍🏼🐠🌱
Great vid man... yea go a indoor pond, that will be so awsome to see
To solve algae in have ottos and zebra snails they clean everything
Yeah they are awesome. This was more about how to solve issues before they get out of hand.
Sucks when you have a birchir and clown loach..... cant add snail or shrimp as the clown will eat them and I cant add Ottos or other smaller algae eating fish as the birchir will eat them :S
Ottos yea, Nerites no. I don't want everything covered in snail eggs thx lol.
@@intox69 nerites dont hatch in a plain water aquarium they need salts
@@royd63uk I didn't say they hatched, they lay eggs on everything.
The best method against hair algae is to spray vinegar. First drain the water halfway out of the aquarium. Plus, use an anti-algae agent containing salicylic acid.
you are the best, I learn some much from you, thanks!
I have noticed by accident that when you store unplanted plants in the containers in the aquarium that it promotes algae.

Good :)
My daughter's glofish tank has green water, and green spots on the glass. I notice the live hornwort and duck weed go nuts with the blue LEDs. I wonder if the algae loves that blue light. My other 5 gallon tank is my favorite tank, never gives me problems... I'll try less light.
you got co2 on that jungle tank! kept that quiet. thought about ordering in some fish by courier? wanna see that dwarf cichlid tank stocked man.
Its not had an update video since I set it up. Give me a chance lol. Coming in the next video. Really cheap way of doing it too.
I have had success clearing minor green water algae by adding freshwater clams and mussels to the tank. Be careful with the mussels because they dig themselves in, then dig around the entire tank under the sand rather like a giant rabbit snail or trumpet snail. The clams, on the other hand, will stay put.
Wow, I love these aquariums. This must be your previous studio?
So thankful that I started watching your videos. Initially it was just because you are so damned cute, but you have answered many questions about our first aquarium. We have algae and weren't sure why one of our little tetras was missing. Was it the Beta or was it the algae. We are learning.

I find Siamese Algae Eaters( a kind of fish) to be very efficient in cleaning algae on glass of tank. Would highly recommend!
If you've ever wanted to raise daphnia for your fish I heard they do well in green water.
Do the goldfish eat your plants? I have a lightly planted tank and I’d love to get one of those
I've just got rid of my tank because of algae,I was miserable, the fish were miserable, I've had a tank for 20 years bought a new tank and couldn't control the algae,so I'm having a rest I might set up a tiny tank .thank you, take care .
Damn you have beautiful tanks 👍👍👍
Funky smell...cyanobacteria? I'm battling that in one of my tanks right now. It's really frustrating.
And how about Orand-Chu Crew??
...yeah thats right, i had the same smell and it was cyanobacteria....just adjusted the water flow and problem solved 😉

Keeping tank out of algae is like an avatar. You have to keep balance on every aspect inside your tank.

I just noticed your pitcher with the holes in the bottom of it.. brilliant 😂♥️

My forever likes the way you say allergy as algae
Found you
Hi MD, i have a question, please solve these...
If sunlight is directly hit into aquarium tank.. Then it will cause algae?
yes
Deepak John it can do
Not always. Depends on many factors. How long it's in direct sunlight and how many excess nutrients are available in the water column.
MD I’ve only got algae on the plants I’ve recently trimmed. Nowhere else, not even on the glass or nothing. Any idea why?
