Palarandusk's mansion exploding with fire and burned to the ground along with most of his spellbooks, all without warning and out of nowhere, and apparently the attackers were a group of adventurers... yeah, sounds the work of a group of murderhobos.
Yup hey there’s a dragon here let’s kill it
Rogue: "But how did they notice me before I stole the whole shelf of books in the foyer?"
DM: "The animated constructs move to block your exit, but they don't attack or appear host-.."
Wizard: "FffFFfFffffffffffffiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiireeeeebaaaaaaaaaallll!"

has a town full of gnomes, keeps an eye on everyone, nice and cheerful, and I wouldn't put it past him to get some presents for the children once in a while. He's basically Dragon Santa. Nice.
Brilliant
Draconic Nick
He has a tendency to follow them around in his incorporeal form and curiously follow their day to day dealings. He likes them!
After listening to this I find myself hoping the adventures that attack Palarandusk's home and burn his tomes found themselves in a goblin infested cave while being poisoned , without their weapons, and out of spell slots.
Agreed

Players:But your here right now!
Palarandusk: Well, Ive got better
I am pretty sure this Dragon has inspired the oldest Dragon of Elderscrolls, the old Dragon Paarthurnax.
He shares a lot of similarity with Palarandusk. Also as in how he is a wise old teacher who aids the people.
@@FreedomAndPeaceOnly the fact that no other dragon in elder scrolls has anywhere close to the same coloring as him likely supports this
Nice B5 reference
He probably walked it off.
@@Kidozy I thought that was a Monty Python reference.
He's cracked the Christmas advertising formula. He's become too powerful.
He’s like a metaphor for unlimited selflessness. He cares and spare so much of his life for others, that he’s deteriorating and dying for not taking enough care of himself (which will end up with him not being able to protect anymore).
Good to see a GOOD Dragon on the list as well. I find Good Dragons better encounters than evil ones simply because my party often try to be murderhobos and good guys at the same time. Good Dragons force them to choose.
we already had dragons that weren't evil, now we have one that is good 🤝
I just love the idea of like a wise old gold dragon looking down on the party with his arms crossed and with the expression of a disapproving grandpa. "You all know what you did. And you should be ashamed."
Palarandusk finding that gnome settlement is the essence of "You're my friends now :D"
What an adorable and sad, yet precious piece of lore. Thank you for sharing! 😄
What a tragic dragon.
i wept . I am definitely going to include him in an adventure and making my party help him ...
Ghost Dragon Grandpa... He spent so much time protecting others, yet no one went and came to protect him...
I find this dragon's story more fascinating than any of the evil dragons this channel covered. Palarandusk sounds traumatized imo. He's a millenia old lab rat who only found peace in protecting others. I wonder if he ever had a mate or children?
Probably, but gold dragons are more complicated to mate than any other dragons...
In the video it stated he had no suitable heirs, so I'm guessing he didn't have kids of his own.
@@Voldrim359 oh? why?
@@tk3venestros697 Late, but they gotta check if their philosophies are compatible - which takes years - and then they gotta seek permission from their king before actually mating.
Might he becomes a demigod? It seems like he is already an important person and respected as a protector in a fairly big area. It's even possible that when death comes for him, it won't be the worst thing.
A regional draconic protector deity that has a mostly-gnomish clergy? I think that'd be a pretty decent local flavor cult.
Only with the assistance of another deity and the permission of AO.
Maybe its one of those "promotion takes you further away from what you want to do" things, god of protection means you don't do a lot of protecting yourself
I'm surprised Mystra hasn't stepped in for his sake, like how she protects Daurgothoth in his quest for perfect lichdom. But maybe because Palarandusk's motivation is more honor driven and views magic as a means to an end she hasn't really taken an interest.
@@zenithmaiden2109 Bahamut may be his best bet for that.
Palarandusk gets exploded. "I am too old to die!"
Could help but laugh at “Lord Amu has risen and brought with him an army of thousands of undead” *happy Christmas trumpets*
After hearing about multiple dragons who have pushed the limits in more ways then one for power and greed, MrRhexx brings us a powerful dragon that hits you emotionally as you feel sorry for all the shit that has happened and (as a player) want to go out of your way to help him.
Can dragons cast the wish spell? If not, that's an interesting character idea. A gnome protected by him, seeks adventure to learn the most powerful of magics, to restore his people's protector back to it's prime.
I knew of the Unseen Protector, but I didn't know he was so damn old. His physical condition is pretty sad as well. I wonder why he hasn't tried engaging any of the other Metallic Dragons for their aid? If nothing else, I imagine the King of Justice (the Gold Dragon leader) would be interested in aiding him.
Maybe personal disagreements? Though he is from a much older edition, so that might why we haven’t see all that much about him.
Metallic dragons, especially golden dragons don't care for the company of other dragons, yes they meet up periodically in the enclaves but they don't stay together long.
i cant help but wonder if Bahamut has ever taken notice of him.
isnt Life one of his domains?
I imagine that Bahamut is aware of Palarandusk, but, given that he is the subject of magic experiments, probably including some 10th or higher level spells that Mystra said "No more" to, Palarandusk is a convoluted ball of Old and failing spells. Bahamut probably respects his work and existence enough to leave him alone than to tug on the thread that has the potential of causing the ball to either fall into a pile on the ground or, making the situation worse by releasing the magic that is holding him together.
@@Matt-fl6ys
Yes but hahumut could leave likely easily fix his problem.
@@shinrapresident7010 i garuntee you a gold dragon (assuming its properly played in-character) will likely go far out of its way to stamp out any evil it finds, they would have litte issue with kicking somones ass if need be,same can be said of Bronze dragons.
silvers take the more subtle approach and usually wait for others to call on them, theyl fight but they dont make it thier business to look for trouble.
each metalic dragon fills a social role in games.
as for Bahamut im not a fan of the way wizards of the coast have treated him either...they keep demoting him in power despite the sheer advantages, abilities and privileges he has unmatched by any other god.
for instance He and Tiamat are the only 2 gods that can freely fully manifest in the material world (though at the moment tiamat is trapped in the 9 layers of hell in asmodius's service).
It is interesting, theoretically there are ways he could reform himself, but it would definitely be very difficult. And being a Gold dragon who is good, he might not accept certain morally questionable ways of restoring himself.
Bit surprising that despite all these years he didnt ascent into the demigod-like Great Wyrm unless those also have limits on age or even swallowed his pride a little and true polymorph into a new body losing all the enchantments on his disintegrating one. Then again it could be a campaign goal to powerlevel (ethically more or less) to get Wish and restore him to corporeality
@@Kokszo deities, even demi ones, require the help of another deity to ascend and the permission of AO. Best option available gor him would be a particularly clever and powerful druid researching a version of Reincarnate which would work on a dragon.
@@joshuahogan3475 that would require of him to die from what is basically old age thus making the spell useless in the first place
Looks like MrRhexx doesn't take the holidays off.

I'm just getting into DND lore, and I understand that normally dragon turtles are about as big as boats.
I wonder if there is a legendary one, like this dragon, that is as big as an island?
Idk if it’s named but their are records of a small island that some explores realized was an ancient dragon turtle
there actually is, or was (he dead now). a long time ago when the civilizations where still mapping the world there was a small part of the sea that was always veiled in a incredibly thick fog. hidden within this fog there was a small archipelago counting just a handful of islands. one of these islands however was not like the others... everytime a ship would visit they would find this island nowhere to be found when looking for it or appearing out of nowhere when there shouldnt be any landmasses for dozens of miles. yes this tiny island was indeed a dragon turtle.
They’re called ancient dragon turtles and are now in 5e via Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons
Invent one!!
Why not? Don't act like this guy and his "lore" applies to anything you'll do as a DM.
There is no D&D "lore". That part is up to the players.
My hero. Seriously never heard of a canonical person from dnd be this truly noble and compassionate of individual. not only does he at least appear to put away his pride as a dragon and abandon things he views as worthless and beneath him personally as an individual like treasure and lair, he In truth actively uses every ounce of his pride to fuel both his compassion and perhaps in some sense even his humility. Pride In service of compassion and humility. Doesn’t sound like it can actually be a thing at first glance but dang this dragon just earned my love and respect.
Spoilers for Icewind Dale: RoTFM
I ran a icewind dale campaign awhile ago, and the Gnomish character's secret was that he was trying to find a way to help Palarandusk.
Once he found out about the Chardalyn dragon he was going to attempt a ritual to fuse Palarandusk with it, so that the dragon can have a physical body again, and be nigh immortal.
It was an amazing campaign. It ended up becoming a crucial part of the campaign because of the potential for corruption. So much happened on that campaign, we went way off the rails, and the book ended up becoming more of a guide for characters and places. It's why I love this game.
That sounds awesome. Did they succeded? Is Palarandusk ok?
Unfortunately they lost to Auril, ended up getting defrosted a few hundred years later, in an enclave that is run by a priest of the Morning lord. If you played the story there's a machine that needs fixing that is tied to this. They fixed it and a town was built around it. Aruil succeeded in making the north her domain, but is stuck fighting Levistus' forces for control over it. The campaign ended there, cuz a few people had some life stuff to deal with. Where things would have led to is them reassembling Palanderusk uniting the desperate races trapped in this hellscape tricking Levistus into weakening Auril, and saving the day... or they would have failed abysmally again🤣🤣
@@kennethbautista5670 Damn. Tpk is ruff. That`s incredible how much can this module differ, considering our party found and fixed his thing in like session 10 IIRC. So yeah, I guess for every freed North there is a future with no sun.
It didn't go off the rails, rule one of Gary Gygax "these books are merely a guideline." Playing by the book is fun but limiting to a degree. Going off the rails usually mean further character development along with their story and background. Dnd is storytelling, being that character, failing or being successful, having a small business, traveling from goblin village to goblin village to study their culture, fighting off an orc invasion. All are stories waiting to be told by the DM and the players.
Tldr: Going off the rails is part of the game.
@@highinquisitorvanwiller8904exactly. Which is exactly why I can't stand campaigns that vehemently stick to the book and the DM has to resort to cheap crap to keep it "on rails" eg the "you don't really want to go that way" "you feel like this isn't a decision you want to make", and when you insist, character death
An interesting quest would be the players grabbing a spell scroll of the clone spell for this guy. Since the spell allows it to be used for any creature. If that seems too easy, you can alwas say that his very nature now is so foreign that the spell must be slightly modified to accommodate his new form. hopefully power fully intact.
It would have to be some relic level scroll, dragonic bodies are significantly more powerful and magical cloning them is significantly harder than humanoids
@@bigles025 it states any creatire
Misinformation
RAW clone wouldn’t work, nevermind all the “dragons are different” flavor, by RAW it’s a no go based on the components. You need at least 1 cubic inch of flesh of the creature to be cloned, that and cast time is one hour. He can only materialize for minutes at a time.
Now, if you’re using wish to cast clone instantaneously, that would work. So long as you cast it touching your material flesh component, i.e., Mr. Ethereal dragon here.
You would just cast a 3rd level blink, cast your clone wish, hold the spell using up your reaction and concentration, then when you’re in the ethereal, touch your component and release the spell.
People can argue “bUt iTs a DrAGoN tHo”, a creature is a creature is a creature.
“A creature is any player character or DM-controlled monsters and NPCs including (but not limited to) constructs, monstrous plants, and undead. If a spell or feature says it affects a creature, then it does not affect objects unless it specifically says so.”
That being said, I would totally level a reflavored Gnome Genie Warlock or dragon Sorcerer, or wizard with saving Palarandusk and making him a merely ancient dragon again his total end goal and the dragon as his patron/bloodline.
Wouldn't work. As he talked about in the video about the dracolich, clone spells work different for dragons. (Lore wise at least). A dragon can't simply clone himself because he is a being of pure magic. Magic runs in it's veins. A wizard has most of it's magic on his brain. This is also why sorcerers can't cast the spell clone. Because the magic they know is inherent to their body and being. So if they cloned themselves, they would indeed be born again but without any magic. And transfering innate magic essence from one body to another is not as easy as a simple 8th level spell unfortunately. After all, only God level entities can create their own avatars. And even the avatars aren't as strong as the entities themselves. So imagine how hard it must be to transfer the whole magic over.
I role played Palarnadusk's death inside the ruins on Old Irithrymbul, homebrewed as a ruin beneath Gnomengarde in DoIP. It was an emotional moment that had the players offering to bring the knowledge of the gnomes true nature to the kings Gnerkli and Korboz... as they discovered the Respository of the Forge of Spells. Great times. Great memories. Great adventures!
Ohhhh man, the part about all the knowledge that was lost when his mansion burned ... What a shame! :(
I think a really great adventure could be built around this dragon.
A low level one could be built around stopping a spy who discovered the dragons existence. The adventurers job is to stop the spy from reporting to dragon or some evil group/entity.
A mid or high level could revolve around stopping the decay or finding a way to restore the dragon.
There is really a ton that could be done here.
stopping the decay might as well be impossible, he is supposed to be alive thanks to spells that are not even possible to cast anymore, also any kind of ressurection wont work since his death will most propably be considered of old age
A dragon like Palarandusk would seem like a super interesting patron for a Warlock. It almost writes itself really.
That was a bit of a sad dragon's story. May they find their peace.
Thanks for the dragon lore. ^^
If I were to create a character for a high level campaign, thanks to this video, I'd be sorely tempted to create a character that worships dragons, collected vast amounts of knowledge about them, and made it his ultimate goal to bring this dragon back to its former glory.
Image a LG gnome warlock that has his powers... Strangely with no reasons. But in the end he discovered that a ethereal gold dragon oldest than deites, now so weak that he is so near to vanish, guided and protected him as Patron. As hope for a future for his Earth.
Thats both so sad and incredibly sweet
Personal character quest: out of a sense of gratitude, a rock gnome wizard seeks to gain enough power to be able to restore the guardian of his childhood home
Now I want to play a Gold draconic bloodline Sorcerer, who's goal is to gain more and more power, only for the purpose of being able to contain Palarandusk's soul to save him by giving him at least some kind of body.
That is so wholesome, I love it!
Yay, my favourite dragon! Thank you for doing a video on this :)
I love the fact that, despite creating and being able to cast Whipstrike, he doesn't use it because he thinks it is "unfair" xD
I'm currently writing an adventure involving him and Ebondeath - that open-ended fact about the rods is new to me and should be pretty useful!
I could see a very cool lawful good themed campaign coming out of either helping further or end the life of Palarandusk. The later would be aiding his transition to Mt Celestia naturally. How one would comfort & enable the 'stewardship' of the living world (or at least that gnome village's) protection would be up to the DM & party. @MrRhexx there is your next kickstarter idea LUL.
"The news of my death were greatly exaggerated"
Palarandusk sounds like the panzer of the lake meme where he is sort of but not really bound to a large body of water and his protection comes in the form of a village elder telling the younglings what to do to survive the winter.
I like to think that people also come to him for his wisdom on whatever happens to trouble them and while he sees them all as children (how couldnt he), he indulges them because he appreciates the jovial chats and the companionship and if anyone asks, he'll say that unpoisoned minds are far less likely to turn on each other and its just another layer of protection he can grant them.
Wow, what a backstory. Very tragic and heartwarming.
It would be interesting to see something in the lore, in an adventure or a novel in which priests, paladins or followers of Helm pray to their deity for some kind of help for Palarandusk, who believes that his purpose in life and beyond, is to Protect and Guard. Either Helm himself could help Palarandusk, or send his church on a mission to help him.
I hope if his lore is ever expanded someone finds magic that can help him. Haven't read much into the Dragons of D&D and he certainly seems the most chill.
Oh yeah, that's my Christmas present right there. Thank you, mister
Palarandusk, Paarthurnax, both dragons, incredibly wise. Anyone else seeing the parallels?
Even after 11 years, it's kinda hard to believe that Paarthurnax has the same voice actor as Mario.
No.
Not only is he the oldest, he's also the perviest. Palarandusk was THE very first horny bard. He has had sex with pretty much everything in the multiverse. This has resulted in dragons, wyverns, kobolds, lizard folk, dragonborn, and pretty much everything else with scales.
Finally, a dragon of culture
@@RiskofRusty Indeed.

@@dakotastein9499 There are no natural races in D&D. Evolution isn't a thing. Everything was either magicked into existence or is the result of someone getting nasty with something they shouldn't have. Also, tiamat and bahamut are also his kids. That came from fucking the primordial essence of the universe.
Such a tragic character, but definitely my favorite dragon with the exception of Felgolos
Does not like talking with others but feels compelled to protect them. That's a good soul that was hurt very badly.
A true hero. I'd run a campaign where the kingdom is thankful for his deeds and create a warfordge dragon and he possesses it giving it life. He's given almost a Prosthetic body and its basically a machine dragon so it's a cool aspect to explore
Hoping we get a Voaraghamanthar soon. Love this series…!
You will!!
Palarandusk was a mature adult around the founding of Netheril, in the mid-3800s before DR, a mature adult dragon is 200-400 years old, meaning he was born between around 4000 & 4200 BDR. the current year in 5e (assuming he's still alive) is 1496, making him about 5500 to 5700 years old, more than a millennia past a gold-dragon's expected lifespan of 4400. Neat.
Can't we save Palarandusk with a wish spell?!!! I would not see him fade from the world.
This is a nice holiday gift
Thanks for each and every video you have made! Happy 2023 and beyond!
Much sadness, may those adventures suffer a painful demise for ruining his home and tomes
So much of Lost Mine of Phandelver makes nods to Palarandusk without explicitly naming him. Gnomengarde, for example, is almost exactly in the same spot that Ieirithymbul was supposed to be. The crumbling Woodland Manse, as well, is likely a reference to Palarandusk's old home in the Neverwinter Woods, located near the ancient Netherese city of Xinlenal.
I was like "Oh what kind of nightmare against the material planes is it gonna be this time" but like metallic dragons
So... all these dragons you have been mentioning I've been adding to the lore of my campaign as gods, basically, Dauhrgthoth figured out a way to create children with other dragons, and realizing that he kind of wants to spread his own happiness around, he helps out the other dragons, bringing a certain elf back to life, etc, and all of them kind of realize they don't really fit in that world anymore and search for a new one, being so powerful they no longer need protection between worlds, and find a world with no crystal sphere... so they build one and deal with the four huge residents, which become the land, and eventually they do become gods as they do become worshipped
Lessss go baby, im loving this dragon series

I mean, an entire campaign to restore this dragon just writes itself.
He was first published in 1998 at the height of 2ed. 2ed had a wonderful book for Chronomancy. All he has to do is find the Time Keepers and learn a few of their unique spells and BOOM!, most, if not all, of his problems will be solved.
Next time a character plays a gnome, I am going to suggest them coming from a gnome town where the gnomes are guarded by Palarandusk. Simply so that I can build a storyline where the players have to save Palarandusk from his deterioration. Just the scene of him watching over his gnomes and protecting them, he deserves a happy ending. #SavePalarandusk

So this is eleven hours old as of right now... I wonder how many players are going to meet Palarandusk the weekend following this episode? :P
Seriously, it would be neat to have a kind of "Steam Statistics" but for tabletop games, showing what the playerbase is doing following a popular podcast promulgating this or that lore, how many use it right after. I bet it's similar to how if a popular Twitch streamer starts playing X or Y obscure game, that game suddenly spikes in active players.

The fact that Palarandusk clings to life to remain a protector says enough abt his personlity.... imo
Palarandusk pulled a total Doctor Manhattan with reconstructing his body. Absolute legend.
Two Years ago i decided to play a Kobold (Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer) and Palarandusk is his Mentor.
Since he is very Young, Palarandusk is also his "Fatherfigure" and everything he knows he does through him.
He often mentions things like: My Mentor told me to not do ... and things like that and everytime the Party asks who this "Mentor" is, he just answers: My Mentor told me i cant tell anyone.
So if they find out because of this Video: Hey Guys o7
I think this is my favorite dragon and I have watched a lot of dragon videos. The whole lore about him is really fascinating and both beautiful and unsettling. There is something extra unsettling about something that should have died long ago, and is SUPPOSED to get stronger with age, and have been with the world for many thousands of years slowly starting to eventually fade and get constantly weaker. And eventually risk getting eternally trapped in a very bad state instead of dying normally. Also a dragon that lived a very admirable life.
