This feels like the Retroid Pocket 4 designers had finished the shell design before the internal design was done. So they decided to launch this model to test out a clamshell design with active cooling, for the eventual 4.
I hope the 4 has real joysticks, I personallt think that the clamshell/larger screen isn't a good tradeoff for slider nubs and an overall bulkier system

@@MjolnirStone I was torn when I ordered then saw an unboxing of the red and didn't like it at all... I was able to email and get it changed and they even game me the $5 back since I wasn't getting the limited edition.

I love the clamshell form factor and have no issues with sliders if they're done well, however I'm only going to get one if they release a clear purple version.
I can't see how the sliders were a necessary change just because of the clamshell. The XD handhelds were clamshells and they had analogue sticks almost 10 year ago. If possible it'd be nice to see a comparison between the clamshell options available with the GPD XD and perhaps the Powkiddy v90. One thing I do know is that the d-pad on this is going to be better than the one on the GPD XD because there's no way it could possibly be worse.
@@KingPepper41 That's true but the XD did have L3+R3 buttons on the face, so that function wasn't lost. Personally I kind of liked having them separate as I'm a bit too heavy handed and keep accidentally pressing them on other controllers.
@@MjolnirStone GPD did add separate buttons for L3+R3 so the function wasn't lost and to me those buttons and the rest made far better use of the free space on the front. Plus after after this much time there really isn't a small clickable analogue stick that could have been used in the Flip?
Agreed. Although I love the design of the 3+ I hate carrying a case and feel like I need to, but with the clamshell I will be more likely to bring it with me because without a case it is obviously much more pocketable.
I'm not a fan of all that empty space on the bottom half. I appreciate that there are reasons they designed it that way, but I don't find it aesthetically pleasing; it makes the whole unit look cheap and dull, to me.
I get what you’re saying and I don’t disagree but having seen the internals, it’s right. The space under that empty area doesn’t have room for buttons or really anything else. So aesthetically I get the complaints, but there wasn’t room left to do anything with that area.
Chinese companies are very good at copying what already exists and doing it better. But these companies have a serious problem in design new products. Just look at the Anbernic and Powkiddy products, a lot of the products are bizarre.

Thor's might coming back with another banger unboxing! Love to see it! Edit: Would love to see if the active cooling results in better sustained performance. I found that if the RP3+ starts to get hot then it's a wrap for performance.

Honestly I’m so happy we are getting a clamshell design handheld. These types just fit so well in pocket Though I think I might hold out to see if a plus version or such comes out. I (believe they said it these are the same power as the RP3+) I’d like Something that could handle more ps2 games so hopefully a plus or something else clamshell comes out!

6:00 Which version of Street Fighter Alpha 3 was this? I'm assuming it's not the arcade version because of the flashing "Press Start" prompt on Player 2's side. And i know it's not the PS1 version because Blanka has his back walking animations intact. I would imagine it's not the PSP version because of the hit impact sound effect being faithful to the arcade origin. So I'm guessing it's the Dreamcast/NAOMI version, or could it be the PS2 version?

That's the handheld emulation scene for ya, there is always new tech just on the horizon. Retroid are releasing at least one other emulation device this year as well.
It really depends on which games and whether you need perfect emulation. A lot of the PS2 library is playable, and some nearly perfect. However, which games run well and which don’t can be surprising.
Good question. I checked now and yes, you can. I had some issues when I had the sliders pressed all the way to one direction but the click worked, I just didn’t “feel” the click.
Trash keypad and trash camera on a device I would honestly only really wan to use to play games. No thank you. I woulf rather they invest more time in making the device more powerful so that it can handle ps2 games better.
You can do anything you could on another Android device, so it should work. I know people have used them to do Twitch streaming and stuff, and also since you do have HDMI out you could use that and stream/capture from another device. If you want!

If you saw the show that Retroid took part at, on the board at the back was listed RP4 Flip, then a line going to the right, showing RP5 - 2023?
Maybe so, although I don’t think the 4 is anywhere close and I would expect if anything it may be offered in flat or clamshell options.

I just ordered one in classic black. I think the clamshell design and sizing will fit in my pockets much better than the 3+ ever did.

That’s outrun coast to coast for PSP. Runs great at 3x resolution.

It can play a lot of PS2 games but not the entire library. It really depends which PS2 games you want to play. Some play great, some barely at all.
It needs a keypad and a front camera, it needs to be a smart gaming device.
