  • Surefire is widely-respected amongst professionals for its tactical lighting products. However, Surefire also gets a bad rap from a lot of flashlight geeks. Is this warranted? In today’s video, I break down some of the common misconceptions about Surefire’s flashlights using the E2D LED Defender Ultra as a point of reference.
    Video notes:
    I don’t recommend purchasing the latest, 1000 lumen iteration of the E2D LED Defender. Because it was released very recently, prices are still relatively high. The difference between 500-600-1000 lumens is mostly negligible - the price is not.

  • @stick9078

    Appreciate the review man, I've been wanting to get a proper EDC light and I think you've helped me make my final decision so ty! I was going stircrazy but umm ya, your giving out some seriously generic info about batteries and they have so many variables, chemistries, manufacturers, quality control, and cell age all playing very big roles. Depending on your particular need. As you said "One needs to be cognizant of a products design intent" goes for batteries even moreso than most things man. xD The reduced point of failure with 123s really is only low temps. BUT are you more concerned about your battery running in under 0°c or having a higher thermal runaway threshold? -weighs hands-
    Again, depends on how you're using them. Yes, they can drain to 2.7v-2.5v before they're dead however, that is only because they're non-rechargable so it's moot, you're not worried about cell damage at that point, is disposable. Shelf life? Entirely dependant on the particular chemistry of the battery. (IMR, IFR, ICR, MMC, INR, etc, etc) Yeah. I apologize if I'm being pedant but as a battery snob I can't help myself. If you have a quality LiOn with a 3.6v-4.2v charge, you can leave it on a shelf for months or even years. I literally pulled some out of a storage bin that had been locked away for week over 3 years, still holding 3.6v. Don't store LiOn batteries at full charge as it can increase degradation. If you're losing more than .1v/mo you sacrificed on quality or the cell is old/damaged (damage most likely from over discharge [drain or drain rate]. I'm not a flashlight/torch geek but I am a pretty big battery snob/geek. Not all 18650s are created equal and if you take say a Samsung 35e 18650 and put it in your SureFire (I believe I read somewhere it can have up to a 10a discharge) you'll be damaging the battery if you leave the light on to long. I would recommend the 25r for that continuous discharge rate. Also, your 123As are considered dead @ 2.5v and basically drained at 2.7v but if you take a 18650 below 3.2v your risking the cell. I personally don't take mine below 3.5v before I cycle. But I'm also pulling about 35a out of my batteries so I keep them between %65-98 capacity. LiOn batts like to be in the middle. Also, if you're going to get into serious batteries, get a serious charger. Don't ever charge them via USB. Get a PROPER charger like a Opus or NiteCore. Hope I could add a little to help some of y'all out. Hey, if any of you have any questions about LiOn batts or chargers shoot me a msg. I'll be glad to help. Oh and please guys, don't buy Chinese knockoff LiOns... The QC is atrocious, they're unreliable and sometimes even unstable. I've seen bargain bin LiOns ignite at 3.3v. You get a quality tool, don't skimp on the batteries! I've been cycling some of the same 18650s for over 5 years (DAILY CYCLES) and they seriously still hold a nominal 4.2v full and have just shy of if not still full capacity. I also HIGHLY recommend getting a charger that can not only cycle and refresh your batteries, but control how fast you charge them. If you don't need it immediately, like you need your phone (that and charging in use is why in 9 months you start losing battery life) TRICKLE THAT CHARGE!!! I generally put mine on a charge rate of .5a/500mAh for all of mine. On a side note guys, most of your big brand batteries all get their cells from the same manufacturers. (Panasonic, LG and Murata now I believe.) Used to be almost all Panasonic. Sorry, that's one bit I haven't kept myself in the loop. Unless in the recent few years, some others have started making the cells themselves that I'm unaware of. They buy the cells with a specified level of quality control, and build the battery around that. IMO the best starts with AW. Hands down. Then Sony(Murata) Samsung and LG. There are some other decent ones out there like TrustFire, but they're lower end and seriously, who can't spare another $1 at this point to get a top rated batt?

    im between tactician and E2D 600 but i never seen video with E2D 600 beam shots i will be grateful if you make a video...the only reason i think 600 e2d is more useful at 1000 version is the runtime 1000 lumens dimm faster than 600..btw nice video bro

    • @Precogvision
      @Precogvision  5 лет назад

      Pretty much anything you see on video isn’t going to be a very good representation of what it looks like in real life unfortunately. The beam has a very distinct hotspot with a decent amount of flood. Lots of throw from this light. I’d go 600 unless you can get a good price on the 1000 lumen.
      I have owned a Tactician as well. The beam is much, much wider and you’re not going to get nearly as much throw. It’s probably better for close-quarters. The way you actuate the Tactician is also distinctly different, and you need to ask yourself if you want a traditional tactical switch (Tactician) or a clicky switch (E2D). The other big consideration is the clip on the Tactician which is bezel up only.
      Hope this helps, and thanks for watching ;)

      On lifesaving equipment you dont want charging on anything. Military optics, night vision etc do not have internal recharging mechanisms. Rechargeable requires the user to be cognizscant of the power drain of that device. The human is most error prone. Changing out batteries on Jan 1 and July 4th is a much easier task for a human to subscribe too. Lifesaving equipment isnt for daily use. Rechargeables have a home on those sorts of use cases.

    Enjoyed your comprehensive approach to reviewing. Good storytelling makes for good reviews and there aren’t enough of them in this industry. 2👍. What’s your opinion on Streamlight - the widely regarded contender to the Surefire brand. You know they’re a competitive alternative because the most quality accessory producers typically sell parts suited for 2 brands, surefire and Streamlight. After these two brands you get into the more esoteric, “tinkering” brands that I won’t bother with because I don’t have time to research them before dropping a couple 100 bones. So what’s your opinion on Streamlight? Btw I bet you exclusively use Apple Computer products(just a guess)

    • @Precogvision
      @Precogvision  5 лет назад

      Hey man, thanks for watching! Yes, I’m pretty much Apple at this point, once you get locked into their “ecosystem” it’s quite hard to get out. As for Streamlight, I’d say that they’re probably the next best go-to for tactical lighting products after Surefire. I’ve owned a few Streamlights, and while they aren’t my cup of tea, I’d posit that they’re great for the mass majority of consumers. Streamlights are also generally cheaper than Surefire, and the quality reflects that in my experience. With that said, they do make a solid product and my dad even has an original Stinger Incandescent that’s chugging along to this day.
      TL;DR Go for Surefire if you must have the better of the two (me). But for most people, Streamlight tends to be more desirable from a price-point to value perspective.

    • @sheepdog916

      Precogvision Makes sense. It seems like there is a logarithmic value between the two brands. You have to answer, is 5-10% more quality/durability etc. worth the extra 100-200% cost. 0:41 AUDITORY -- not misused, but bizarre. this review will be auditory? unclear what you mean. "pertaining to the sense of hearing"
      1:43 RECTIFIED -- you say they have rectified their previous pricing. Rectified is a very black/white word, it literally means that something has been "made right." same construction as "correct." Latin origin, typically used in a scientific/mathematical/accounting context. I'd say it's a little off-base here, where you likely mean that surefire "improved" their pricing or made it competitive. In other words, the word has an explicitly objective connotation AND denotation, whereas something like "improve" is subjective, and therefore more appropriate to a discussion of the value/price/worth of the lights.
      2:00 "issues of contention are warranted" -- the contentions may be warranted or unwarranted. The issues are just issues. This is a question of precision and style.
      2:05 EDIFY -- "to educate or instruct" especially morally. To lift up. A preacher edifies his congregation. A parent takes his child to the museum for that child's edification. You don't edify outlandish claims about flashlights. You might discredit, clarify, analyze or evaluate those claims in a video. So this was way off and I think that's what prompted my comment.
      2:58 SUFFICES -- seems like you're saying "I think it's suffice to say that..." as if the word is an adjective. It's a verb. It suffices to say that, having written all this, I must have high standards for the written word. Also this was a horrible mispronunciation, you've got to hear this used properly.
      4:08 ARGUMENT OF CONTENTION -- this is redundant. An argument requires contention. The typical phrase used in modern American mass-media language is "point of contention" which is both more familiar and avoids redundancy.
      At this point I had to bail on the video, so this is as far as my feedback can go. I'm a professional writer and I think any writer would agree with the subjective aspects of the above critique. The objective stuff, i.e. auditory, rectify, edify, suffice, that's just no-go. Anyway I hope that may help you in some way. I appreciate your receptiveness to this. In the grand scheme of course, none of this is a big deal lol.

      I had to look at my script to remember some of this stuff lol.
      For "Auditory", I was speaking with reference to myself mostly talking. That's also why I referenced the items in front of me as "eye-candy". Most people watch videos for the visual aspect, and I wanted to emphasize that the video would be more so verbal.
      As for "rectified", I don't think that it has to have an objective connotation/denotation. While the word does objectively mean to correct a wrong, that correction is subject (at least in the scope of what I said) to whether or not you believe their new prices are more in-line with value.
      If I recall correctly, and looking at my script, I said "while some of these issues of contention are definitely warranted". It's implied from "while some" that some issues are, and are not, warranted.
      As for edify, I'm not 100% sure on this one, but that's how I've always seen it used in literature. If you look up the dictionary definition, it also states "to instruct intellectually". A good example of it used in a sentence (from yourdictionary.com) akin to the way I used it is,
      Edify for others, that's why he says "He that prophesies edifies the church."
      According to my script it says, "I think it's suffice to say". I haven't gone back to watch the video, so there's a fair chance I did screw it up when I said. But that is what the script says.
      I agree that "argument of contention" is redundant.
      Forgive me if I think you're being a bit pedantic. If you are a professional writer like you said, though, then I don't mind at all. In fact, your feedback is most welcome; I'm always looking to improve! For what it's worth, I have made efforts to tone down my language in more recent videos.
