Recharging a 900 kWh battery pack overnight could need a 70 or 100 kW charger, especially if avoiding peak hours.
As a truck driver, I am not interested in one. The route that I run aka 700 miles per day, it wouldn’t work with dot hours 11 of drive time that drivers are working with. Most long haul drivers wouldn’t have the time or access to mega chargers to make it work.
It will be better for short haul with the ability to charge along the route. Your comment about diesel particulates in exhaust has long been a thing past. Diesel exhaust filters (DPF) that traps particle (and burns them off) and low sulfur diesel has been a requirement of diesel engines for a long time. The requirement of diesel exhaust fluid that is injected into exhaust (DEF) that lowers NOX emissions that went in effect in 2009 is super clean. You can at stand near a new truck exhaust while it’s idling and not smell diesel exhaust smell or diesel particulate matter. I can fill my tanks (190 gallons) in about 10 minutes for 1500 miles of range. Class 8 trucks (that’s truck, trailer and total cargo weight) have total weight limit of 80k lbs over 7 axles. There’s a been a trend over the last 20 years to make the trucks lighter for more cargo capacity. When the trucks start gaining weight, the profitability goes down. It’s a very complex problem! Going electric isn’t a fix all solution. It has to be a more competitive and a net cost savings to be total replacement for diesel trucks. The energy density of batteries will have to be significantly increased ,battery weight will have to be massively reduced and lower purchase costs for a ev trucks to make it competitive with diesel trucks.

Many of the people watching this video are ignorant to the new diesel semi trucks that are clean idle emitting no fumes. Our electric grid is stuck in the 60's and can't handle what these electric vehicles require on a large scale.
So what I hear is that you actually do want an electric truck, you just want to wait until the batteries are more energy dense and cheaper, which is fair enough and I think, the actual plan with all electric heavy goods vehicles and planes. Although postal services in the days of dashing highwaymen did, in fact, solve this theoretical range problem a long time ago. Not to mention, why is anyone driving loads that far, they should be on trains in the first place. So glad no government thought it'd be a good idea to rip up perfectly good train lines in favour of the automobile.
@@AC-ir3odExcept that isn’t true, there’s literally 3x the capacity on the electrical grid compared to the 60’s and coal is a much larger percentage of that output compared to today’s grid. If anything we are easily adding enough capacity to the grid to cover the electric vehicles coming online. Look at the EIA statistics.
@@AC-ir3od Not factual at all. Most be people don’t have a clue on how the grid operates. Our grid on average increases 6% annually since the 60s. A giant excess in capacity and windfall developed with the switch to led lighting.

Now we just need an electric box truck and we'll be well on our way to trucks being less of a pain to drive with on city streets
What is your take on charger freeze on new locations as relates to semi. The semi needs a different charger than auto and most current stations can’t physically handle trucks. One of the earlier stated obstacles was the need to build new infrastructure quickly as semi hit road. Most would have chargers at start and delivery point but still inadequate. Any ideas?
I really hope Tesla doubles down and prioritizes Semi. Such a cool product and Tesla has first mover advantage here by a mile!
Tesla ate so far from the first m9ver on semi trucks. There's, Renault, Mercedes, I believe a couple of US companies lord knows how many Chinese companies not least of all a now well established Electric Bus companies all over, these are basically semi working out of a home base.
But I agree Tesla Semi is so cool. They need now to go large or go home

Elon been to busy with Twitter and is his several other companies too fully focus on Tesla.
They are limited by how many batteries they can produce. It's way more cost-effective to build a bunch model Ys than just one semi.

I think this a weirdly amount of excitement when companies like BYD and even Volvo already are producing E Semis and don’t have to rely on just one company willing to actually buy in significant numbers.
It’s because Volvo’s semi is only able to do around 250 miles in it’s current iteration while the Semi does 500 easily

Unpopular opinion: Semi is more inline with Tesla’s mission than FSD.
Yeah, dumb opinion. FSD will result in millions of sustainable robotaxis including autonomous semis. Exactly in line with the mission.
There’s nothing dumb about that opinion. But ultimately the Tesla semi is a fail and it proves this year after year. Just like the solar roofs are a fail. Neither ‘product’ has any meaningful impact in the real world or on the balance sheet.
maybe you don't really understand what the point of FSD is. Semi is important but FSD is world changing.

Getting diesel semis off the road would be a HUGE deal. Rollout is slower than we'd like but better late than never I guess.

Rereading my comment I clearly missed my point. I mean, does need for megachargers suggest that Tesla hold on infrastructure will only be relatively short lived until semis are on road or Tesla will sell magacharger units to others who will install like Tesla selling superchargers to others (BP Electrify America ) as been suggested.
I would not automatically jump to Tesla slowing down anything regarding the megachargers based on what we know or anecdotal information. Way too much of that going on with this layoff. The semi is a bright spot where Tesla does not have to compete with countries willing to buy the EV market. As far as I know.

WattEV just opened a megawatt charging station with 1.2 MW charge speed.
There are plenty of batteries that can be purchased in the open market. There’s another reason Tesla isn’t producing them in mass. Probably has more to do with cost.
Those Chinese and Europeans are shipping them up like crazy but teslas is less cost effective despite having the best tech is weird.
@@makisekurisu4674 the Chinese may be subsidizing their cars and the profit margins are much lower than Tesla. The semis probably aren’t as cost effective as their cars.
On a related matter Musk really screwed up when he made the decision to not pursue a cheap BEV. His $50B pay package. Would pay for a dozen new factories and the development of several new car models. Absolutely ridiculous.

Initial infrastructure may be expensive but it will come down with adoption.
Electric vehicles should be far cheaper to run than diesel ones.
I would guess moving into the Heavy Truck market is a very different space to cars and there is a lot of learning and iteration occurring.
The original semi announcement was full of promises that seem like vapourware by now. The one I remember that I thought was really important for its success was that Tesla was supposed to build the chargers and they were going to guarantee a rate that was ridiculously low to make the operation cost really cheap. That seems to have been forgotten.
Tesla is more than just Elon. I wish he’d leave, but there’s still thousands of hard working people who are making incredible products like the Tesla Semi which are making our roads safer and cleaner.
If you say it’s a letdown because Elon claimed it would do more, you’ll always be let down cause Elon always over promises

I just don’t see how we can keep using road infrastructure the way we do today. Electric cars and trucks, as much as I love them, can’t save the planet alone. We need massive investments in rail infrastructure, and moreover is needs to be federalized as the major private railroads have proven they do not care about running railroads effectively, they only care about profit squeezing.
Electric passenger trains are a common thing on east coast. It would be cool if we could do the same with freight trains. In the early days of transportation there were electric/battery electric trolleys. The trolleys would go on overhead electricity when in the city but used batteries for gaps in the lines or to reach out to areas just outside the electric lines. Did you know that home electricity typically followed out from the electric trolley lines. If you didn't have a trolley line you most likely didn't have house hold electricity.
Feel free to shake your fist at the government asking for rail. I’m gonna be praising actual progress made with clean vehicles on the road
Just the opposite the government has shown how horrific they run railroads. Come to think about they seam to run nothing properly.
@@joelado Ireland is going to be introducing BEV trains in the next few months to a year for their major train network. It'll be interesting to see what happens, considering there will be less friction with steel on steel contact with the wheels and rails, maybe they'll have better range than private road vehicles or Semi's. With the torque that electric motors can provide maybe would be even better for hauling long freight trains.
@@techbysteff4829 I'm sure they will. The reason why locomotives went with a hybrid as its standard. The diesel/electric train was because of the powerful torque that electric motors provided for uphill climbs, while diesel was chosen for its efficiency. Overhead wire freight just gets rid of the need for diesel to go long distances and batteries allows them to through areas that don't have the overhead wires. The Tesla Semi have lead to a discovery that larger heavier freight trucks actually make it easier to capture regenerative braking energy going down hills. I wonder if this will be the case for electric freight trains? Probably yes.

@@jeffkrupke3810why? Long haul trucks is one of the areas where hydrogen makes sense, considering where battery capacity sits. However hydrogen isn’t green so the CO2 problem is still there. Cost as well.

Unfortunately, you don’t have any charging stations that are being grown for these new trucks. And unless Elon’s going to put on some overalls and go and fix the ones that are breaking down. This is doomed to failure.
I think everyones waiting for the government now. Theres 2 billion sitting around for charging stations. Now that NACs is a public charger theyre probably banking on it being publicly funded.

It will probably go as well for Pepsi as it did for Hertz. 500 mile range for a semi is nothing. Many semi’s have over 1,000 miles of range. There is a reason why EV sales are slowing dramatically as once the coolness factor is gone, it is just a bunch of hype. No way will I pay more for something less convenient. It’s not saving the planet.
Lower cost of electricty could help balance the equation. Increasing daytime solar could lead to being paid to charge.
Comparing the range is ridiculous. Gas is far more energy dense even an average car also has hundreds more miles of "range". We know that people don't drive more than few miles to from work.
What's important is if it can go as long as a trucker is legally LIMITED to drive.
@@Distress. You do have a valid point , but on Midwest interstates you can do 700 miles in the 10 hour limit without speeding. Also, we know 500 miles will be a best case scenario. Heavy loads or cold weather will affect range. Don’t run your air conditioner or heat as your range will decrease also. It won’t be that popular. Just like the cybertruck being a yuppies pickup truck not meant for a real contractor, this truck will be used by companies like Pepsi for virtue signaling. Once they see that the overall cost is more over time, they will switch back to diesel. Right before the EV mandate, I’ll be sure to by 3 cars so I never have to deal with these half baked ideas. Reminds me of the CFL light bulbs which were terrible being touted as the savior over incandescent bulbs. We would still be using those POS if some guy hadn’t invented the blue led which had eluded the industry for nearly 50 years. Otherwise you wouldn’t have those cool led bulbs now. My point is that you can’t force technology and Litium ion is big fat unsafe turd of a solution.

I've seen several of them on flatbeds and on the side of the road here in Southern California.
The reduced hauling capacity and range makes no sense. They're about 3x the price of the diesel equivalent.
Before the fans attack, tell mw why Tesla wont post the MSRP and wont post the actual hauling capacity. Not the gross vehicle weight, the max weight that is cargo
One theory, and a likely one, is that Tesla is still designing the truck. Production from the truck production factory will be a next generation electric truck. How much do you think they learned in testing for 2 years.
They’ve said it’s a pilot program. Just with Pepsi to figure out how to make it better before volume production. Revealing the price now would be pointless, you can’t reserve one

All these Tesla trucks are doing cushy shuttles and light duty operations , and make no mistake , when it comes to heavy duty operations, they are no match for a good big diesel.
You really shouldn’t gush over Tesla marketing.
And let me tell you , a heavy truck being driven like a sports car is not , and never will be how handling freight should be.
I’ve been an owner driver and a company driver and driven all manner of big rigs and heavy machinery….. I would not touch an electric truck run on 4 or 5 ton of batteries that are toxic to build , massively expensive to replace, and a handicap due to their weight.
Go out and buy a couple of big rigs run them for a year , then tell us what you think.
And I can tell you , no one I know wants an Electric truck for heavy operations or buses for that matter.

Huh? These things are massively more powerful than even the most powerful diesel truck. And the zillions of gallons of fuel the diesels are burning is insanely more pollutant to people than the batteries ever will be.

Really? Every time I read bus drivers talking about electric buses they love them. Mysteriously. I'm sure it has nothing to do with how smooth they are to drive, not having to sit breathing in pollution, the reduced noise and the improved cabin space. They're coming in in my area and it's wonderful, although my route will probably be the last to get them.
You know they're making mining vehicles, which make your thing look like a toy for a toddler, that are fully electric, right? This is a solved problem. Your vehicles are going to be electric, there's no point resisting.
