Can totally recall every amp I've ever owned:
    -Dad's 1964 Magnatone
    -Holmes 20 watt solid state
    - 1987 Marshall JCM 800 2205 with a 1960A
    - Fender Super 60 (because the Marshall croaked and I couldn't afford to repair it. A music store swapped the cabinet and gave me the Fender)
    - Marshall Valvestate 100 2x12 Combo (pedal platform. Used a Digitech RP-12 for all my tones)
-Line 6 AX 212 (Absolute shit)..
-Mesa Rectifier Solo 50 with Standard Recto 4x12 (kept this until 2 years ago)
    -Mesa Mark V (sold)
    -Mesa JP 2C (sold)
    -Mesa TC 50 Combo (sold)
-Kemper 600 watt with Cabinet (sold)
-Mesa JP2C (yes, again) with compact Recto 2x12 (best cab ever)

My first gigging rig was a Peavey Studio 110 red stripe and an Epiphone Les Paul- no pedals. And the worst gig we ever played- turned out to be the best. Our drummer booked us without saying a word to any of us, we had only been together for about 6 weeks- we didn't have enough material worked out to do a show- not even close. That said, we felt we couldn't back out- we were booked, so we play- that's how it works. But- we decided not to charge the guy who was throwing the party- and to tell the crowd that we just got together and basically were just going to have an open practice session and let them listen. There was between 150 and 200 ppl there- and it became a really fun, intimate venue where the ppl got to interact with us, watch us make mistakes, watch us work stuff out- and they loved it. They would ask for a song, it would take us 2-3 tries to get it right, but then we would play it for them- and they ate it up. We let ppl get up and sing- they loved that as well. It turned out to be the most fun I have ever had at any show- and I met my wife that night. X wife now, but that's my fault really- and a much sadder, longer story I don't want to get into. We were together for 10 yrs though so- that night had a huge influence on the rest of my life.

When we heard "my dick is flopping, please report to baggage claim" we were rolling on the floor laughing. 😂

I'm a bass player who plays AT everything else. My bass rig history isn't embarrassing. But my "playing guitar in public" gig history kind of would be. The first band I played guitar in was a friend's band. He'd broken his arm and needed someone to cover his rhythm parts while he sang. I figured I could do that for a couple months. That guitar was an Explorer copy, by Hondo. My dad was an Electrical Engineer. He and I had re-wrapped the pickups in a few of my guitars. The Explorer had the most successful set of those. I used my friend, Pete's amp, because mine was only good for bedroom volume. His amp was a Lab Series L5, a fire breathing monster of a solid state amp. It was probably the most effective solid state guitar amp I ever heard before digital stuff existed. Second public guitar rig was infinitely more serious, nearly a decade later: MIJ Fender Strat into a Bedrock BC50 amp.

funnyly enough I kinda get the point of the Laney powered cab: it's not for gigging musicians - it's for the clubs and their backline! In a world where more and more people tour with modellers these things actually serve a purpose for small venues where the backline sound does matter a bunch. I work a club like that and just running the guitars through the PA sounds ass since our small club has a small PA.

Both of those were awesome pieces of kit, but the Voodu had all the effects you'd need as well, which meant it could cover everything, and we all know how good Rocktron effects are.

A friend's band had won a battle of the bands at a local Frankston pub. Part of the prize was four Sunday afternoon gigs in the main bar. I noticed while they were setting up, the patronage was a dozen old fellas quietly sitting around with a beer. The guys got on stage, introduced themselves and tore through Born To Be Wild. When the song finished some old bloke yelled "Fair enough fellas, we're trying to watch the golf"

I wish I have my first rig. Fender 1966 Duo Sonic II with a Dan Armstrong Blue Clipper (box plugged into the guitar) and a Peavey (not sure the model but it had a 12" speaker and was solid state...and LOUD). I loved it and miss every bit of that rig.

I’m glad to hear that we all did the same things. Like smelling the gear at a shop. Hahaha. The smell of a new Marshall cabinet was just the best thing ever. I still go into shops and give them a sniff. Hahaha. Sadly the owner of the shop I used to go to recently passed away.

My first rig was a burshwood guitar and a gorilla amp. Still have both!

First rig: Squier black Strat and giant Fender amp - too big for an amp in a New York apartment (or flat, for the Andertons folks :). I think I had to keep the volume knob on .25 and that was even still too loud. I can't remember what happened to it.

First gig rig for me was either a Marshall MG100 half stack with a multi-effect pedal by Yamaha and a Mexican made Fender Strat. I didn't even know how to work the Yamaha pedal other than using the Chorus, Delay/Reverb and using the overdrive as a solo boost. Used the bare bones settings I could but the band got through it and it was a great little run with them. Seems like a lifetime ago.

My band played a gig at Wombwell Working Men's club near Barnsley in 1990 on the day of the England V Germany world cup semi final which was being shown in the other room! You can guess how many people were watching us!

Rob's story about the JEM reminds me of a story Brian Blessed told, about when he was a child he met the artist Picasso and asked him to draw him a picture. Picasso drew a picture of a bird, and Brian asked what it was, to which he replied, ''it's a dove.'' Young Brian wasn't impressed, and said, ''that's not a dove!'' Then gave him the picture back.
That picture, many years later, sold, I think it was for ten's of millions of pounds. It was a life changing amount of money anyhow. 😱

The Marshall preamp with tubes was the 9001, and the Valvestate one was the 9004, and that was the one that was only a few inches deep. The 9001 was deeper than that.

i first started playing guitar in the very late 90s, and as a newbie i didnt understand rack setups at all. once i pieced it together, it looked expensive and had way too many moving parts, so i vowed to never deal with racks. now im an adult and i work in IT, my life is nothing but racks...
