I think this was actually one of Bernie's best interviews. Maher asked decent questions and Sanders gave concise detailed answers. I say this because he, at times, has a tendency to speak in overly general terms and fall back on the same phrases or slogans for answers. Here, however, I thought he was excellent. This is the Bernie the country needs to see more of and the one that needs to show up at the debates. Overall, well done by both gentlemen!

The reason Bernie loses is because the media have made the argument that Biden is most likely to beat Trump and exit polls have shown that beating Trump is the most important topic for A LOT of voters. SO important apparently that they are willing to ignore their own policy preferences just to support Hillary 2.0 because the media said, he's "the most electable".
And old people are the voter block who'd fall for this propaganda (since they watch TV) and they came out in masses to vote for Biden.

@The Irish Italian you either pay to keep people in the positions they are in now, or you pay them all unemployment benefits for an unknown amount of time while the system is re-built. We are doing exactly that here in Australia. America never seems to like paying money to support the people, only corporations, I've never understood that.

    • @trybunt
      @trybunt 4 года назад +5

@Morgoth Bauglir as a fairly moderate Australian this is accurate. Americans (I know some are not how i describe, but I'm generalizing) are dogmatic about capitalism, there is no other way to put it. I've tried to explain a hundred times that our health care here works great, and is affordable, but I just get told ridiculous things like "American health care system is the best and most efficient in the world, socialist health care is a failure everywhere" it's crazy, I've been to 20+ countries and American healthcare is a nightmare.
Bernie Sanders is the only American politician that makes any sense, and actually cares about people, but Americans seem to have this "we know what we are doing and will never change" attitude which is so self defeating that it's sad to witness.

While that is indisputably true, Bill Maher isn’t one of the silent voices. In fact, he’s made that very point. But had he not asked about it in this interview, everyone would be like, “Wow Bill with the softball questions. What a pussy! Bernie is going to destroy the world. Blah blah blah I’m a faggot.”
So he’s gotta ask it. Plus, the question should be asked for any spending the government makes. The issue is that the same people who cry about the cost of social programs have no issue with an oil company paying zero in income tax and, in fact, getting a 130 million rebate while someone who makes 45,000 a year has 20% of their income taken by the government.

He's all talk. None of his policies have any chance of becoming laws. The Democrats don't control the Senate and McConnell won't allow a vote on any of his policies. Even if Democrats flip the Senate, they would still need GOP support for any of his policies. We're headed for a global recession and we already owe trillions; no Republicans are going to support M4A when they're trying to slash funding for regular Medicare. Free college and student loan relief have no way of passing either. Bernie's been talking about the same policies for years and he doesn't have enough allies in either chamber to get any of his bills out of committee intact, let alone pass either chamber with the majority they need. If he can't get anything done as a Senator, nothing will change if he wins the presidency. His foreign policy is also absurd. He thinks Russia should be part of NATO. He wouldn't be able to fix our relationships with our allies; he would only alienate them further. It's moot anyway. He has no chance of winning and at this point he's just delaying the inevitable. It's Biden vs. Trump. If Bernie's supporters are as progressive as they claim, they should want to ensure that we don't lose the SCOTUS for generations. RBG is 87 and I doubt she can last another term on the bench. If Clinton would have won, she would have retired already. Bernie's not electable at the national level. He's not likable. If having the best ideas equaled a guaranteed victory, we never would have had Bush or Trump.

I love Bernie, but I'm afraid he has not grown his base and that could hurt the outcome. What about the other ones? All but two should be cabinet members and/ or be in charge of many of the agencies controlled by the executive branch. Think about that!

That wasn't an interview. He got tossed a couple softball questions that anyone with knowledge of the political system could have answered. It's moot now that he dropped out and endorsed Biden, but he never got pressed about being a deadbeat dad who let his kid and his kid's mother go on welfare so he could run for governor and senator of VT, his rape fantasy essay, his praise of communism, or the fact that he rants about the "political establishment" even though he's never had a job outside of politics and he's been in politics for nearly 40 years. As far as foreign policy is concerned, he advocated for Russia to be added to NATO even after they annexed Crimea. Good thing he lost. He would have got blown away in the general judging by the primary results in Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Medicare for All has the additional benefits that Bill is concerned about. Once the government takes responsibility for the payment of healthcare, the government realizes it is cheaper to make things healthier for people. That means improvements to other policies like the amount of pollution allowed in our air and water, food and safety inspection rules, sick time allowed, investment in cures, etc. Once the people's health has value, the government has a reason to care for and actually defend our citizens rather than allowing corporations to make money off of us regardless of consequences.

Keoki Ciervo Bernie said that Castor did a great job getting Cuba literate. He praised him in his education possible. No crime there, it’s true. But he never said it should be copied, especially not their version which (like China and Russia) is Communism.
Socialism and Capitalism can co-exist as it does in much of Europe. No country does that Th w exact same way and many are still more capitalistic than socialistic. But all have national healthcare, higher ed, and a national pension. There other social programs we don’t have like national maternity/paternity leave.
They have both private and national companies. The national ones work to create more revenue for the government who is the primary owner tho some do have shares/bonds to buy. They keep industries like petroleum, power and telecom, honest by setting the market price for base utilities. They provide job opportunities and life long jobs like our Federal government. Statoil, for instance, is Norway’s national oil company and 49% of their profits are revenue for the country. There was a time up until the 1990s that there were many industries with federa, state or local government control including airlines and utilities. Bill Clinton deregulated ostensibly to spur innovation and better service through competition but all it did was drive up their prices to the consumers in most areas whohas led no other real choices. And where they did the FTC allowed too many mergers leading to monopolies or trusts.

Bernie's been finished since it became a 1-1 race. This was an easy question that anyone who understands how government works could have answered. He should have dropped out already, but then he'd have to stop paying his wife until June for working on his failing campaign team. There are numerous demographic groups that make up the Democratic base and he's only popular with teenagers and college kids: the least reliable voters in the country. He's behind by 300 delegates, NY and NJ are the only relatively large states left, and he's polling behind Biden by double digits in virtually every state. He made no effort to reach out to African Americans or moderate Democrats, and the only reason he was the front runner for a couple weeks is because Biden was splitting the vote with Bloomberg, Klobuchar, Pete and Warren.
Bernie's been in politics the same amount of time as Biden, and he's only authored 7 bills that became law compared to Biden's 42, and 2 of them were for naming post offices. He's been in the legislature for 30 years; if he couldn't get anything accomplished in either chamber of Congress, being President wouldn't suddenly change that.

@@@colinomalley7932 Awwww, are you mad that your grifter candidate got obliterated? After all that money he panhandled from naive Americans like one of those televangelists he only got to be the front runner for a couple of weeks. Don't blame me because you can't deal with reality. Bernie was a shitty candidate in 2016 and he's doing even worse now. There's no reason for him to stay in a race that it's mathematically impossible for him to win.
If BernieBros were really "progressives," the first thing on their mind would be RBG's SCOTUS seat. 5-4 is bad enough; 6-3 or even 7-2 for generations would guarantee that Roe gets overturned. BullshitBernie shouldn't even be able to run in the Democratic primary. He's not a Democrat. He's had decades to join the party and refused, but during primary season for the past 30 years he turns into a Democrat for just long enough to get his name on the ballot. It's not my fault your candidate is hated by the majority of voters. African Americans can't stand him, moderate Democrats can't stand him, and apparently most of the anti-Trump Republicans/independents can't stand him. His own colleagues say he's too stubborn to work with on any legislation, which is why Biden got 35 more bills passed in virtually the same amount of time.
There's nothing that I said that isn't true, and you can call me a hack if it makes you feel better about your shitty candidate losing, but he would have gotten obliterated against Trump which is the main reason people voted for Biden. Trump got himself impeached trying to smear Biden, but up until a few weeks ago he's been holding rallies telling his supporters to vote for Bernie in the primary, even if they have to register as Democrats. And what do the crybaby BernieBros do? Threaten to stay home, write in Bernie's name, or vote for the Green Party. Even with another Supreme Court seat up for grabs for whoever wins the election, the fake progressives that support Bernie refuse to vote for Biden.
It makes no difference. Bernie's base is mostly teenagers and college kids who are notoriously unreliable voters. This isn't 2016. Biden is doing far better in the Midwest than Hillary was, nobody's on the fence about Trump, there are plenty of anti-Trump moderates, conservatives, and independents, and even out of the people that voted for Bernie in the primary, only the foolish young voters who don't understand politics are willing to hand Trump another term just to spite the party that will actually pass the legislation BernieBros pretend to care about. Bernie was winning with Hispanic voters except the Cubans in Florida, but they're not going to vote for Trump or protest vote when their biggest concern is getting rid of Trump.
It's only the whiny BernieBros, most of whom are young white males from privileged backgrounds who are saying they won't vote for Biden. It's downright pathetic that after years of Trump, you fake ideologues would gladly hand Trump another term, RBG's SCOTUS seat, and have none of the issues you pretend to care about addressed because your candidate lost. The media took it easy on Bernie so far. In the general it would have been a different story. That article he wrote about how women fantasize about being gang-raped while men fantasize about degrading women, the fact that he's never had a job outside of politics his entire life, his lack of a record of getting shit done as a legislator, his family going on welfare so he could run for governor and senator, and just the word "socialist" would have killed him in all the swing states.
It's laughable that after campaigning for 5 years he still can't convince the majority of the left or the center to vote for him. Bernie raised over $100 million in 2019, and Biden didn't even have enough money for TV commercials going into Super Tuesday and still won by a landslide in states he didn't even campaign in. Even after Bernie skipped out on a rally he was supposed to hold in Mississippi (where black people make up 35%+ of the population) to spend more time campaigning in Michigan (where black people only make up 10-15% of the population), he still lost the state by 16%. California, Texas, Illinois, and Florida already voted, and Bernie only won California by 7% because Bloomberg and Warren were still in the race. The only big states in terms of population left are New York and New Jersey, and Bernie's polling behind Biden by double digits. I have a better chance at winning the Powerball every year for the next decade than Bernie does of winning this primary. Once Biden (easily) gets the 1,991 delegates he needs for the nomination, it will be hilarious to watch Bernie disappear into irrelevance. 7 bills in 30 years and 2 of them were for naming post offices--what a clown. Maybe if Bernie endorses Biden, Biden will make sure Bernie can author a bill to name his 3rd post office next year. What will the reply be?
      "OK Boomer"
      #Never Biden
      #Write in Bernie
Or just threatening not to vote?
There really is no difference between Trump supporters and BernieBros. Trump's supporters aren't "conservatives," they're a cult whose leader is a populist just like Bernie. That irrelevant "comedian" Joe Rogan who endorsed Bernie just said he'll be voting for Trump since Bernie lost. I would think that progressives would want to go after the conservative of the two parties, not the liberal one. I guess revolutions are too time-consuming. It's a good thing Bernie and his Bros weren't alive during the Revolutionary War. Instead of fighting for independence they would have just complained that they weren't independent.

There are enough facts to point how destructive extreme wealth has been to societies for at least 10,000 years. Humanity is addicted to wealth and power and can't seem to stop despite the destruction. We're on a destructive trajectory because of it.

In Canada, our free universal health care has been such a tremendous benefit and blessing. I have had numerous surgeries, testing, and hospital stays and have never, ever seen a bill. Canadians have the legendary, most admired Canadian, Tommy Douglas, to thank for that. Mr. Douglas formed the first Democratic Socialist party in Canada and in fact, in North America. His grandson, Keifer Sutherland is mighty proud of his Grandpa, and Mr. Douglas is revered as a true hero here in Canada. Bernie is a modern day true hero and a once in a lifetime candidate. Another Canadian here. I'm also proud of our system compared to what the US has. That said, health care is not free and it is not yet universal in Canada (we will get close to it if they manage to make national pharmacare happens, crossing fingers). It is not free but it is paid for in a fair way through taxation and thanks God our tax system is proportional. What Bernie is proposing is way more radical than what we have since he plans to eliminate private insurance. In Canada private insurance continues play a significant role. All in all we are way way better off than the US. But let's not send an inaccurate picture of our system to our American brothers and sisters.

In Norway, Bernie would be considered a conservative right-wing man. I like Bernie. He has his head in the right place and has the dose of empathy that a man in a leadership position should have.
The problems you have in USA are that over several years, politicians, both Republicans and Democrats, have worked to legalize corruption by allowing large sums of money to go to politicians from interest groups, corporations and wealthy individuals. Another thing is the way the political hierarchy is organized. The president and the two dominant political parties have too much power. In Scandinavia, all political parties are represented in elections. You choose from the parties' election program and not the person. If a party does not have a pure majority after the election, they must negotiate with other parties to form a majority coalition. The negotiations will include who the leader of the country will be.
