Was there, Dec. 30th 1971, balcony, 15 yrs. old. They were giants among men.
Thats big time !
You had a taste for the good stuff at an early age!
Unreal pal !🤙🍹
This song erases my stress!
I always wanna see more of Richard Manuel in any video of The Band.
What stands out to me most about these guys is how confident and deliberate they are in their playing. They don't rush, instead they take their time creating that signature tight, yet loose groove. Truly one of a kind musical chemistry was on display when The Band played.
Late great arty what a player
Greatest North American Band
The most magnificent dancing drummer in the history of Rock 'n Roll! The guy is doing 5 different things simultaneously,as easy as breathing. No one comes close to the late ,great Mark Lavon Helm in my opinion .
How he does the fill at 3:15 while singing is a mystery (as someone who tries to sing and drum)
So TRUE…..
Second to Phil Collins.
@@jotapecu sorry, not in my book
I agree. Take a look at Queen's Roger Taylor in concert videos. He's right up there.
The "most humble" Band of all times, untill today, Hudson,Manuel,Danko,Robertson & Helm. Thanks for ever.(from Jujuy,Argentina)
“My biggest mistake was loving you too much… and letting you know!”
Rick and Levon’s voices blended so well together, what a classic.
This should be a model for young musicians starting out. Each instrument plays a memorable but understated part yet the whole is so much greater. And there is plenty of space for the music to breathe.
A tight band that played loose
@@mikewinter4987best bunch of them for me ther the best
The Band in their prime… Doesn’t get better than this!👍❤️🎸
Levon clapping the horn section at the end after giving such a stunning performance himself really sums him up.
never saw it but what a great song
That was Levon Gracious and Humble it has been said that every inch of his body oozed Music
Massive respect for that! What an absolutely rippin' performance.
A Rock Star, he was not. A great, or should I say, really great musician he was! Yes, you are so right...I noticed that act of humility, and graciousness at the end. And, that after tearing the shit up out of that great song with a stellar vocal performance. He was a multi instrumentalist, but, in his vocal work, he didn't just find the pocket and sing there, he felt the shove of the groove, and sang balls to the wall on top of it.
@@slimbuttermilk well said....damn
Rick putting a little extra into the harmonies gets me every time. This version is pure 🔥🔥🔥
II always dig Ricks harmonies. The Band’s sound wouldn’t have been the same without them.
@@thomashermann2785 Ricks harmonies and animation were awesome. Lead vocals as well. He was so important.
Do the Danko Dance 😃
@@Karmakatt6 Hell yes. Nobody moves like Danko did!
@jamesgregory2962 love his sound!!
Keep On Keepin' On!! -Levon
Levon Helm - Holding down the two most important jobs in a rock band, vocals and drums.
One of the best live albums ever recorded.
This is one of the best singers I have ever heard. Colin's voice incredible back in 1964. His voice stills holds up today. The man sings with so much feeling. 😇✌️
My biggest mistake was lovin you to much
Dont! Break my heart🎉
1.4k like..this should have like 14 million likes..
I was at this show ....
Yes I'm that old.....
And still fabulous!
You are that YOUNG!!!!
You look every day of it 😊
Quality every time. Give me a band these days with quality like this...
This shows you how great Levon Helm was. What a powerhouse!
Gotta love The Band. 🎸
RR didn't write the effing songs but got paid and Levon got screwed. Read the book by Mr Mark L Helms and draw your own conclusion. RIP Levon. You were the soul of the Band
@@PhukIT1865 Composer's copyright yield royalties for their holders. That did not hold back many successful Bands. Promotions and Advertising (P&A), and... live performances create demand and ticket sales. Promoters must compete for audiences...So, if the guys were earning union scale as professionals, once they were signed, produced and managed, promotion and merchandising would supplement income from tours to support their albums. Did Albert Grossman screw Levon?
Robbie definitely wrote the songs, there is no disputing that. So he got song writing credits, but the other Band members made plenty of money too. I'm guessing Levon's version is somewhat onesided, read Barney Hoskyns biograhpy of The Band, and you get a more balanced view, not Robbie was perfect (who is),@@PhukIT1865
According to Barney Hoskyns biograhpy of The Band, they ALL made a lot of money, even if Robbie made more as the primary song writer, but much was wasted on drugs and bad money management.@@davidblank9564
This footage is unbelievable!
Wow. It just doesn't get any better than that.
Best grove of all time! Levon baby!
Man, this fuckin jams!!! They were THE band
So sad that we have now lost Robbie. R.I.P. Great solo by him in this great version. Top of their game.
Levon, with one of the GREAT rock n roll voices.
What a funky bass player Rick was
Thank you God for the band existence
What can be said? The music was all feel..Feel it….
I’m a late arrival to the Band appreciation society, but this is the best live performance of theirs I’ve ever seen. It’s got group focus, passion and pure joy on a level that any band would aspire to.
You know, Clapton has pondered lately that when they broke up after last waltz , they toured f I r northern lights southern cross. Released in 76 77, I think.
And they were clean and playing fantastic,
Just like the Beatles, they didn't have to break up indefinitely.
This is so good. With the camera angles we get to see up close how brilliant Levon Helm was, as a drummer. May Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Levon Helm rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️
Amen!!! What a beautiful bunch of people! Levon will always be my favourite, despite being completely in love with all of the others too.
Add Robbie to the list now RIP
And now Robbie Robertson as well.... this version is so killer!! They were just ON this night.
My favorite version of one of my all-time favorite songs by the Band.
One of the most electrifying performances ever. Thank you
100%! Brilliant performance of "Don't Do It"!! Better than from The Last Waltz.
Absolute legends!! I’m currently reading Robbie’s book “Testimony”. A joy to read for all us Band fans.
Phenomenal version and to showcase The Band at the peak of a unbelievable career still largely unknown to many yet truly one the greatest American-Candian bands of all time.
I think this was from a New Year’s Eve show that became the Rock of Ages live album
En esta canción Levon es pura dinamita, que difícil tocar y cantar así !!
This song ... From The Last Waltz (Happy Thanksgiving) Followed by Don't Let Me Down, Apple Studios, Rooftop Version are two masterpieces of LIVE performances in my opinion
One of the all time great performances and the definitive version of this song! Nice to finally have some footage uploaded officially as well, hopefully some more from the academy of music emerges this week!
Levon's snare sound on this is incredible. Wire wound silk snares, if I'm not mistaken.
One of the most incredible recordings I’ve ever seen. All members of The Band are incredible but I am blown away by Levon. How did he do it?
Love this band FAVOLOSAAASA 👌👌👌👏👏👏🥳🥳🥳♥️♥️♥️♥️
Only The Band could have the best horn section in New York and Alan Toussaint willing to be the arranger
What a great version!!
Levon was so on it: his drumming had a southern drawl, in addition to his voice.
Best song ever
The lyrics are so great, the heart and soul shine through. I love the animated way they all play, especially Richard. This live vid warms my heart, makes me smile.
🇨🇦✌🏻🎶♥️✨🌎💫
Like tellin' a lemming not to leap! Great song thank you for sharing! And when the drummer sings, you know it's a good song!
Levon Helm was a great singer, however I believe all the rest of the Band members sang great, lead or backup.
🇨🇦✌🏻🎶♥️✨🌎💫
Fantastic...Love this performance...As a drummer myself, I love playing along with this tune,
as well as Don't Do It, from the Rock of Ages album. Levon is my hero....
The Band was the best.... Keep these coming....Thanks...
I mean't to say, I also love playing drums along with the cover tune, "(I Don't Want To)Hang Up My Rock And Roll Shoes" From Rock of Ages album.
One thing I like about this video is the kit Levon plays. It is spartan, but he could get great sound through his technique. He was a fabulous musician.
Best pocket that’s ever been!
Oh, this just KILLS IT! And, if my memory serves me well, add that this was THE FIRST TIME THE BAND PLAYED WITH THAT HORN SECTION! That’s right, sure the horns had charts, but there was no rehearsal before this. Holy shiite, they DID IT!!❤
If it was the first then it was also the last.
This Music will never Die!❤🎸🥁🎹🎻
It has been and Will be my soundtrack til death.
THE BAND songs that are on my Funeral own reel!
Thanks!
Rest in Peace and love Robbie!
❤🎸🎶💃🏻
"Acadian driftwood,

They call my home,
The land of snow
Canadian cold front,

What a way to ride,
Oh what a way to go!"
I pray you Rest in Peace and love Bobbie!
Thanks for all the great music you blessed us with..
May you, Ronnie, Richard, Rick and Levon find Peace and Love together.
I pray Garth and Bob have someone close to be with them as they learned of your passing, Robbie.
I know I'm having a rough time handling this news!
Vaya con Dios!
Thanks boy's!
"The Weight" is lifted the veil is thin, dance your Ghost Dance and join in!!
Safe journey brave music warrior!

Keep on Keeping on!
La mejor o más increíble banda del mundo, ¡¡vengaa!!.
This First Waltz is better than The Last Waltz!
Love the use of horns tooo!
Thanks for posting this vintage live recording and sure enough those young musicians who want to learn from the masters, especially in the form of working as a band, The Band!
I did not know this was on film! How great to see it in the moment!
The Band's stay at the Academy was one of the greatest times in music history fortunately well documented with unbelievable renditions of their songs with the added horn section. How about Levon kicking it up a notch @2:00 with the vocals & drumming.
Fabulous! The Band! ❤
Well, this certainly was a nice little pick-me-up for my day...
MARAVILLOSA MUSICA POETICA Y LLENA DE ESPERANZA
Vrlo dobra muzika, gledao sam film The last walc tri puta
I was there and the horn section was memorable that night. This show stood the test of time I believe they put some cuts on their Rock of Ages Album, saw it live... lucky me!!!
❤❤ Had to order the live album. ❤❤
as essential a live recording as Allmans at Fillmore East, James Brown at the Apollo or Johnny Cash at San Quentin
I just noticed Robbie's humbucker, or at least the cover, appears to be installed backward. Every little clue is helpful!
Awesome. I don't know what else to say.
Well, it's THE band
Classic performance by the great ones
Giver!!!!
The who and my morning jacket do great covers of this also. Blistering Robertson solo
Is this Amazing musician musician in the Rock and Roll hall of shame if he’s not
My ABSOLUTE favorite
❤️💕THANK YOU 💕❤️
great!i want this concert's DVD!
one of my favorite grooves of all time, levon had his mojo this evening. my favorite part is the drum break right after robbie's first solo.
Gorgeous 💙
WOW.
I want more of this.
Your absolutely right my brother, goat
Absolute perfection!!
WOW!!! 😍
Magnifici e con un Levon incredibile
So f’n good
Still enjoy listening to the Band
🔥 🔥 🔥
♥ Garth so great
なんかゾクゾクします。そっちのケはないのだが。出だしが最高のグルーブ感。たまりません。
❤
Thanks for the upload!😎
Levon has an “Animal” vibe on the drums. As in the Muppet.
Sorry but call me a bandwagon but the last waltz has the best version of all there songs just the energy of the last concert they were to ever do with the whole bad together after 15 years on the road is just such a beautiful thing
Saw them in 1970 doing this WITHOUT the horns and LOVED it done
that way. For me the horns 'get in the way'. Just my two cents.
Looks like there were multiple great camera angles but some extremely unfortunate editing. This footage is ripe for reconditioning a la Peter Jackson’s ‘Get Back’ treatment of The Beatles archives. Some songs in this performance equal and exceed The Last Waltz. The audio on this clip is excellent as well. As somebody who treasures that movie and The Band I can only hope to see that someday
I’d love to see that too! Let’s hope they do it someday…
The Weight from this album is my favorite live version.
Agree... Everything here is amazing except for editing
💥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥
Great 👍🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥
Fantastic! Thanks for the lift. xo
Get it brotherman! So beautiful and enjoy, prosper, and always share the love 💚💙👌
Either way, this comment will not matter.
Just have fun and live my man.
F%#@ toxic culture negative mentality bullshit. Life beyond way too short
my heart is broken
