Absolutely! That tripped me up for quite awhile, and I totally get why it would be a dealbreaker for some. People need to know that before they decide to try and make it work in Obsidian so they don’t waste a bunch of time.
@@MikeSchmitz I also appreciate, though, that you didn't give up as easily as nearly every other RUclipsr out there. There are a lot of people saying you can't manage tasks in Obsidian, which is obviously false. 🧐
@@bc4198 Thanks 🙂 I did give up on it multiple times to be honest before I figured out how to make it work for me 😂 While my system won't be for everyone, I'm hoping it helps a few people who were struggling with the same things I was.
Thanks you for this excellent video on task management in Obsidian. Your way of explaining the philosophy of and workflow for Obsidian task management was well done. God Bless!
Thanks very much for such a generous and clear explanation. I have been dipping a toe in the water with tasks in Obsidian for such a long time, but this has unlocked the roadblocks. Really appreciate your sharing this.
Thanks for the javascript quick capture. I used a normal quick capture until then because I also wanted to capture to a central task log. I started with a canvas, but ended up using a not with callouts, for mobile compatibility.
You do lose notifications with this system. Honestly, I’m ok with that (my phone is permanently in DND), but I get why that won’t work for some people. You could craft queries to show you tasks that are coming up, but other than checking your lists you won’t be able to get reminders. If that’s important to your workflow though, I’d recommend something like Todoist and use the Todoist Sync plugin instead. That way you can get notifications and reminders via the Todoist app on your phone but still embed tasks in Obsidian.
That's really awesome. Finding your channel is the best thing that happened to me. Thank you so much for your efforts. I tried this out and added recurring taks. It worked great but I'm having a little trouble here. The issue is that my recurring tasks don’t show up in the upcoming days until I’ve completed the most recent one. For example, my scheduled gym sessions occur every Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday - they don’t show up on my list for upcoming weeks until I’ve checked off this week’s. Is there a way to have all the upcoming recurrences show? Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words 😊 Unfortunately, you are correct that future recurrences don’t show up. This is a limitation of Obsidian Tasks, I’m afraid. You might want to check out the Todoist Sync plugin to see if that will work the way you want. If you want to know more, here’s the webpage about how Tasks handles recurrences: publish.obsidian.md/tasks/Getting+Started/Recurring+Tasks
@@MikeSchmitz Thank you so much! Your insights were helpful. I solved this by using the Todoist integration 'Habit Tracker,' applying it to my recurring tasks that I've made, and finally syncing them with Obsidian. Now my life is easier. Ty again❤
Well, actually you can attach notes to tasks. Just create a note with all the required context and create tasks in this note. Provided that I personally use dataview to merge tasks for a day, it works perfect and you can quickly open the note from a task. And it actually makes a lot of sense theoretically. Because it you need to put context to your task, this means that this task is not decomposed enough for your brain monkey (kudos to Tim Urban). In that case your task is actually a project and for that I prefer to create a separate note. You put context, relevant information and a bunch of tasks for this project to be completed.
Yes, but that makes it harder to add tasks and requires you navigate to that note and add tasks to the appropriate section (or create QuickAdd macros for every note you want to add tasks to). If that works for you, awesome 😊 but I chose to optimize for something else (simplicity in adding tasks). I’ve tried to manage tasks the way you’re describing, and it never clicked for me until I disconnected from thinking about locations for tasks and keeping them in one giant list.
Todoist is a great app. I used it for years until I went all in with Cal Newport's multi-scale planning approach. That really clicked for me and I have no need for location-based reminders, but for most people, Todoist will be better!
Thank you Mike! What do you do with the Master Task List? Do you delete the tasks that are completed? And when yes, do you do it on a weekly basis or every day?
I do not. I mark as complete so they disappear from the lists, but the secret is to never look at that list 😂 That's just the place things get captured to. Try to forget that note exists. After awhile, looking at it will just be frustrating anyways because it will be thousands of lines long.
Mike, excellent video and nice explanation! Can't get the javascript working on 13.33 though, it just pastes the javascript text. Do I need to have another plugin setting? Good work!
Weird… I don’t believe there’s a setting for that, my guess would be that there is something wrong with the code. I would try to copy/paste the code from here: publish.obsidian.md/tasks/Advanced/Tasks+Api Thanks for the kind words about the video 😊
@@MikeSchmitz This helped! My bad, I used "quick add instead of quickadd" deleting the space did the job. Thanks again and keep up the good RUclips work!
Mike, is there a way to put a todoist plug in query in a daily note such that it “knows” what day it is? I know you can do this with Obsidian tasks but I can’t find anything on that in the documentation.
Thanks Mike. That’s what I thought. I have been working on just using Obsidian rather than involving Todoist. If I have to have reminders, will just use apple reminders for those. I signed up for your stuff - the my life thing looks pretty cool. Any ETA?

Hey Mike , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what do you think ?
Most of my creative projects don't require that level of sophisticated planning, but I have seen people do that sort of thing in Obsidian! At that point though I think I'd look for an online collaborative tool (probably Notion or ClickUp)
Why don’t you make a whole note for a task? I use the same method for whole projects and small tasks. For example buying new shoes. In the note itself I compare different models etc.
That would work, but I personally don’t like that approach. Feels weird to me to have a note represent both a small task and a big project. But really I am just a huge fan of the Obsidian Tasks plugin and it doesn’t work that way. To each their own 🤷🏻♂️
Personally, I would go crazy if I had to have a file for every task 😂This creates too much granularity in your vault IMHO (when you have notes for projects and notes for tasks, they look the same). But you are correct if you use a note for each individual task.
Thank you for explaining the weaknesses of Obsidian as a task management app in such a clear way. This will save people a lot of time and frustration.

Absolutely awesome. The canvas idea is like creating your own Kanban, but with much more flexibility. I've already applied it to my Obsidian. Thanks!!
