  • I love a good mystery and in this video there are two wonderful mysterious artefacts that I found very recently in the River Thames. I was shocked when I found the first one and I would love to know the meaning behind it. Several ideas have been suggested to me but no-one really knows so far! Can you help me to ID them? If so, please comment in the comments section below this video.
Also during this video I am distributing 20 messages in bottles in London with a surprise inside with a view to sharing some Christmas Kindness. Did you find one? If so, please email me on nicola.white@tidelineart.com and let me know!
Thank you for watching! I wish you a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
If you are tempted to try mudlarking you do need a permit from the Port of London Authority and currently they are not issuing any more permits. We will see if this changes in due course.
You can follow me on twitter and instagram and facebook (yes, way too many social media platforms!). you'll find me @tidelineart and on fb Im Nicola White Tideline Art
Take care and see you again soon!
    Nicola

Happy Christmas dear Nicola! You look fabulous enveloped in gold. A few thoughts about your finds: The clay female figure has a Mary Magdalene vibe about it, which is in marked contrast to a Virgin Mary figure. The triangular jewel has a mid 20th century vibe to it. Are there hallmarks? Have you acquainted yourself with local jewelers of that era? As an adjunct to your beautiful kindness project, I'm a tireless genealogical researcher and whenever I can identify a town or village my ancestors are from, I go to Google Maps and they always show me where the nearest pub is. I want to contact a pub and donate either a pint or a meal to their patrons who are either alone or without a place to go. Do any of your followers want to join me on this exercise?

Virgin marry or a pagan fertility statue, but it has that style of the common "Mary" depiction......I'd say for sure one or the other but more than likely it's a not good carved Mary is my guess

Maybe this little figurine is a votive statuette - Roman or later. It could be related to the healing or the hope of healing of an illness of the lower stomach or of the womb.

Goldsmith/appraiser here. The brooch had a bezel set centre stone, probably glass, I'd be willing to bet you've got an old hat or scarf pin from the 50's or 60s. Merry Christmas Nicola!

Since I couldn't participate in your wonderful bottles of kindness, I did a "virtual message in a bottle" from across the pond in NH, USA. I sent the $5.00 (sorry; not pounds) to our local food pantry, which does so much in our community. I had a link, but I can't attach it here.

Pretty confident that the female figurine is an erotic pipe tamper. I didn't see an exact match in my very short image search, but there were some similar. The triangle thing is the top of a hat pin. Again I didn't find an exact match but if you do a Google image search for "triangle hatpin" you'll see others. When I first saw those bottles I thought you would throw them in the river! I hope you get some replies. It was a lovely thing to do. Happy New Year!

I once saw aceramic figurine of a mature woman made in China. I was told that it was used by the woman patient to point out the location of her ailment , very modestly, to the doctor. Furthermore, I was told that there were a variety of these figurines , each one specific to a part of the body.

Yes that's what I thought of when I saw it, though it looks European rather than Chinese. She certainly looks pregnant, perhaps it might have been a votive offering thrown into the river by a woman hoping to bear a child, but I'm not an expert so I'm only guessing.

I think the triangular object with glass stones is the top of an Edwardian hatpin. It looks quite Art Nouveau, which would be right for the time when hats were enormous, and showy decorative hatpins were fashionable. Also, you showed a find on a recent Si Finds video of a silver item that you thought had been bashed about by the Thames. I think it is a novelty pillbox in the shape of a brazil nut. If you google "silver brazil nut pillbox" you will easily find images of similar pieces.

The little figurine looks like a naive sort of gent’s pocket amusement….can imagine sailors in a tavern, giggling over it! Other than that I would say fertility symbol although I would have expected it to have a swollen belly. Looking forward to seeing what feeds back from tour bottle project. First thing I thought of when you found the triangular object was a catch for a handbag. The whole thing looks quite robust and the projection on the back had a fairly deep groove all round which would snap into a lightly sprung catch on the front of the main part of the handbag. The mounting on the front probably held a semiprecious stone.
Have a great time over the rest of the holiday.

Merry Christmas, Nick! Very enjoyable outing, thank you. As to what you referred to as a ‘thistle’, it looks more like the small ropes, knotted in the middle, then a further knot near the end of each tassel. If you look closely under zoom, you can clearly see the twists in each rope.

I have found a channel I think you will like checking out some of his videos. his name is "Dan Hurd" He is in Canada and he has come across garnets in a river that has them laying in the water. Also, an Island in Hawaii has a beach covered in peridot gemstones.

Nicola, thank you for your kindness! Here in America, we could use a bit of that. I am a huge Tudor History nut in Pensacola, Florida. I keep away from our knackered times by hanging out vicariously in the 15th and 16th century. I love seeing all the cool things. I'll probably never make it to Britain, but thanks for bringing a bit of that to me. Plus, mudlarking in Florida would be downright deadly, unless we had the three days of lower teens around Christmas! Otherwise, we have spiders, snakes and all the nasty things that can downright ruin your day. Happy New Year!

Hey, Nicola! It occurred to me that you might enjoy having a jeweler’s loupe. It will help you examine items really close up in detail. Get a 10 power buyer’s loupe. Maybe, if you have not done this already, find an ultrasonic cleaner. They usually come with a basket to immerse an object in a detergent water solution. I worked for a manufacturing jeweler at one time, and we used it to clean polish off jewelry.

Merry Christmas Nicola, in one of your video's did I see you wearing a Canadian toque in the snow? What a gracious young lady you are doing with all bottle's, I thought you were going to throw them in the Thames, but, what a surprise leaving in different locations around London, there are so many homeless people out there and they deserve to have a Christmas joy as well, hopefully people will think about them. What a beautiful ending to your video having a boat ride on the Thames with all the lovely lights. See you next year, have a wonderful New Year. Neil.

Hugs from snowy Vancouver Island 🇨🇦 Pamela Oh, need to add that your bottle idea is wonderful, what a terrific idea, I'm inspired to try something similar! And, perhaps the sparkly triangular object was a decorative shoe buckle, most of the bit where it would clip on is missing, I've seen some very similar to this one 😀. ❤️

In my opinion I believe at 21:41 you have a representation of a “straw dolly” or “corn dolly” which was a good luck symbol made at the end of the harvest. Although it looks like rope, it’s actually twisted straw which were formed into various symbols including “corn maidens”. A very appropriate find for the new year!
