The problem with Brazil is that South America is isolated and surrounded by Spanish Speaking countries. Brazil's basic education is pretty good when it comes to math, geography, history but not much emphasis on foreign language. When I was in High School, English classes were once a week for only 1 hour. Most people that want to learn English had to pay for private school which generally wasn't that good either. I think the new generation will be much better when it comes to English and other languages due to the internet.

sou brasileira, tenho a impressão de que muitas pessoas sabem falar um pouco de inglês, mas tem MUITA vergonha - quando fui á China achei bem similar a reação das pessoas.. por outro lado, na India, se a pessoa sabe falar o pouquinho de inglês que for, ela vai tentar falar contigo, mesmo na zona rural. já na Italia, fiquei com a impressão de que as pessoas não tem vergonha, elas até sabem falar, mas não estão afim, até os mais jovens tem preguiça de falar e conviver com estrangeiros que não falam italiano.
Aqui tem uma cultura de ridicularizar quem não fala inglês quase como um nativo. Nós precisamos entender que ter sotaque não tem problema algum, entre outras coisas

As a brazillian, I think a lot of people will understand english if you speak slowly. And if you try to get information from a group they will direct you to the most fluent person around. But a LOT of brazillians speak english with a very thick accent (f.i, people tend to add an "ee" sound after consonants and before "s", as in Starbucks = EeStarBuckees)
One guy in the video estimated that 4 out of 10 brazilians speak english. The other one estimated that it was 1 out of 10. I'm brazilian myself, and in my personal experience, I'd say that only 2 or 3% of brazilians can speak good english. Bear in my mind that this video was recorded in a bookstore (which is a place mostly visited by people who like studying/reading), and even then, less than 50% of the brazilians interviewed could speak english.
I think in a country as big as Brazil anytime you generalize is a bit tricky. I feel in big cities younger people speak English more than older folks. So as a country you may be right but it depends where you are as well. Thoughts?

Eu também sinto isso quando mudo o idioma, muda tudo em mim, me incomoda bastante, mas não vejo outras pessoas preocupadas com isso. Já é difícil conhecer uma pessoa, conhecer em outro idioma é mais complicado, porque não é a mesma pessoa do idioma nativo.

(Sei que o comentário é antigo, mas quero responder mesmo assim). Aí que tá, a gente "aprende". Tá no currículo escolar. Agora, ninguém prepara os professores de forma alguma pra ensinar o conteúdo e acquisição dessas línguas. Não existe nenhuma organização ou convenção acadêmica/social pra determinar muito bem como ensinar crianças essas línguas nas escolas, e isso é muito frustrante. Eu estudei espanhol até o 9° ano e inglês até o terceirão e vou te dizer: no inglês tu só aprende verbo "To Be" e lugares da casa, o resto do básico todo mundo já sabe mas ninguém incentiva a aprender mais. Já no espanhol tu até aprende mais um pouco mas ainda sim é algo muito limitado. Apesar de tudo, aqui onde vivo, nos lugares onde vou e nos meus circulos de amizade, a maioria sabe falar inglês e manter uma conversa mesmo dizendo que não sabe. Mas isso são o pessoal mas jovem, claro. O pessoal mais velho já fica bem perdido nisso. (Se tiverem dúvida, sim, sou fluente em inglês e tenho interesse em aprender outras línguas como tupi, espanhol, alemão, árabe, francês etc)
I am from São Paulo and I speak English fluently since I was 9, self taught, but now I speak 7 languages in total. It is very rare, unfortunately, to find Brazilians who really do speak English fluently, let alone other languages.
as a brazilian, i think many of us learn at school but don't practice, so we usually say "i understand, but i can't really speak", and i believe we don't always have the confidence to speak even if we do have a good level

As brasileiras e os brasileiros amam falar varios idiomas bonitos e funcionais do mundo. O que falta no Brasil é uma casa publica de idiomas que gratuitamente acolha, ame e incentive o brasileiro nato e naturalizado a falar outros idiomas.
I am quite surprised to see that you went to a book store and you managed to find only 2 people who could hold a english conversation easily. I am Brazilian myself and I come from a low income family I had not the opportunity to study abroad, however as I am graduated from foreign trade, english is my closest friend. I’m currently living in Germany (just across the border from Luxembourg), and I spent 5 years in Portugal after leaving Brazil. We just had a talk at work about education, how many languages are taught in Belgium, Luxembourg, and I’d argue that if you go through Brazilian public education you barely speak coherent Portuguese, which is very sad, but that’s our reality 😢
Out of my many, many travels, including Brazil multiple times, Brazil is probably the hardest to get by not speaking the language of the land. Of course, the USA is another one, except English just happens to be the global lingua franca... ;)
I learned English because of video games. I used to play video games when I was young (and I still do hehe) and my preferred genre was RPG and thus there would be a lot of text telling the stories and choices that would dictate the path to follow. At the time, there weren't translations in Portuguese yet and the fact of not knowing anything in English triggered me a will to learn the language and, as I dug deeper through the learning process, I got to point I no longer was studying English because I wanted to understand the lines in the RPG games, but simply because the seed of loving the language had been already planted. Though I don't speak any other foreign language, not even close to how I do in English, for some reason, the process of learning English incited me an inner passion for learning other languages. At the moment, I'm a toddler at Japanese, but I aim for a basic level at it at least. I had started to study other languages like Russian, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Italian and Mandarin, but, unfortunately, I didn't keep on studying any of those.
I'm originally from Argentina so my 1st language is Spanish but I've been living in Brazil since 2010 so I also speak Portuguese. Working in multinational corporations allowed me to become fluent in English as well and since I love German and Japanese I've been studying them too but I'm still far from being fluent in either of them.
Young people definitly know more english than older generations. But you would be surprised with how many people can talk the minimum neccessary to help someone for example. And Brazilians definitely underestimate our country. Also the majority of people think not perfect native sounding pronunciation = bad english which is not true. We learn grammar and vocabulary in school but in school they don't put on pratice so everyone is scared to talk and pratice and then eventually forget some things. One I think American couple with a travel channel went to various cities in Brazil and they said people really make a effort to help you and the english was fine. They also said between the cities, Belo Horizonte (capital of the Minas Gerais) state which is my city, people know more english than São Paulo and Rio which are the biggests tourist destinations in the country and I find that funny and interesting. My mother knows how to speak English (have a teaching degree as well), Italian, Spanish, German, Ancient Greek and now is beginning to learn Mandarin and Russian. She went to english school which is what most people who have the money do but the rest she learned in our public university which is one of the best in Latin America all for free (Spanish and Rusian are self taught as well). I learned english because of the internet, study Japanese for some time now in a language school also and am taking Korean in the same public university.
É só a nata da nata que fala inglês no Brasil, e como pra qualquer coisa dar certo tem que ter propósito as pessoas desistem ou nem tentam. Parabéns a quem está estudando e deixo uma dica, não sejam confortáveis e aprendam a pronuncia certa, você ganhara mais confiança e respeito por isso.
I think most of those from 80-90-00 can at least understand english most of the time, since we grew up, with movies, series and games that didnt had subs so we just kinda learned, of course not all from those decades, since we need to put in count, the family and social background, the early on activities and etc

eu não me considerava fluente em inglês e não entendia o por quê mesmo que estivesse estudando a gramatica a quase 8 anos, tanto do ingles como do espanhol, então a uns meses atrás eu fui morar fora do país e alguma coisa desbloqueou em mim, o que me faltava era confiança em falar a lingua, não me importar se tava pronunciando corretamente, mas sim se eu estava sendo compreendido da forma que queria me expressar, em menos de 1 mês com todo o conhecimento que tinha já estava falando perfeitamente inglês e espanhol, sem sotaque e agora to aprendendo turco, pois, estou na turquia, ucraniano porque minha namorada é ucraniana e me ensina diariamente e italiano que é uma ponte mais curta ao romeno.

Muito bom o conteúdo do vídeo, infelizmente faço parte da população brasileira que entende o inglês escrito (com legendas), mas não pratica a fala, pois é complicado perder a vergonha, mas estou feliz por ter entendido tudo claramente.
As a brazillian it's really sad that we don't use english as our second language and learning new languages feel lonely because you don't have anyone to speak to. Luckily internet came and we can speak online but it's not the same feeling as talking to someone close to you. I'm starting german with youtube videos and soon some books but I know it's going to take more time then it should be because I'm doing it alone.

Do not generalize. Most of the young population of the country (since 2000s) know how to, at least, write and read English.

as a brazilian, i think many of us learn at school but don't practice, so we usually say "i understand, but i can't really speak", and i believe we don't always have the confidence to speak even if we do have a good level

O que falta no Brasil é uma casa publica de idiomas que gratuitamente acolha, ame e incentive o brasileiro nato e naturalizado a falar outros idiomas.
I am quite surprised to see that you went to a book store and you managed to find only 2 people who could hold a english conversation easily. I am Brazilian myself and I come from a low income family I had not the opportunity to study abroad, however as I am graduated from foreign trade, english is my closest friend. I have encountered people who lived in UK for 3 years and i didnt reach fluency somehow.
It's because they just hang out with Brazilians.
@Ananda D'Aquino Are there a lot of foreigners in Sao Paulo Brazil? I'm an American who has learned Spanish; when I'm done with Spanish I plan to learn Brazilian Portuguese. I want to live in Brazil and the fact so many Europeans are there makes it seem even cooler.
@@vivaeuropa yes! There are a lot of foreigners in São Paulo capital. Just head to the upscale neighborhoods and you will see a ton. I was working out at the gym a few weeks back and I encountered a Russian girl.
I'm pretty positive there're more than two that could speak a good deal of english, tho.
@@alfredoneto452 Actually the "result" was kinda accurated... We have like 220 million people here in Brazil and less than 2 million can speak english properly! I don't speak as well, i only can read or write in english! Don't try to talk in english to me or you will also feel bad for me😅

Ceará, Belo Horizonte e Rio tem mais pessoas fluentes em inglês do que São Paulo. Creio que não só porque tem mais turistas, mas a educação por lá é melhor

I’m currently living in Germany (just across the border from Luxembourg), and I spent 5 years in Portugal after leaving Brazil. We just had a talk at work about education, how many languages are taught in Belgium, Luxembourg, and I’d argue that if you go through Brazilian public education you barely speak coherent Portuguese, which is very sad, but that’s our reality 😢

Out of my many, many travels, including Brazil multiple times, Brazil is probably the hardest to get by not speaking the language of the land. Of course, the USA is another one, except English just happens to be the global lingua franca... ;)

I learned English because of video games. I used to play video games when I was young (and I still do hehe) and my preferred genre was RPG and thus there would be a lot of text telling the stories and choices that would dictate the path to follow. At the time, there weren't translations in Portuguese yet and the fact of not knowing anything in English triggered me a will to learn the language and, as I dug deeper through the learning process, I got to point I no longer was studying English because I wanted to understand the lines in the RPG games, but simply because the seed of loving the language had been already planted. Though I don't speak any other foreign language, not even close to how I do in English, for some reason, the process of learning English incited me an inner passion for learning other languages. At the moment, I'm a toddler at Japanese, but I aim for a basic level at it at least. I had started to study other languages like Russian, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Italian and Mandarin, but, unfortunately, I didn't keep on studying any of those.

I'm originally from Argentina so my 1st language is Spanish but I've been living in Brazil since 2010 so I also speak Portuguese. Working in multinational corporations allowed me to become fluent in English as well and since I love German and Japanese I've been studying them too but I'm still far from being fluent in either of them.

Very fun video man. It was pretty amazing listening to you speak all those languages.
Young people definitly know more english than older generations. But you would be surprised with how many people can talk the minimum neccessary to help someone for example. And Brazilians definitely underestimate our country. Also the majority of people think not perfect native sounding pronunciation = bad english which is not true. We learn grammar and vocabulary in school but in school they don't put on pratice so everyone is scared to talk and pratice and then eventually forget some things. One I think American couple with a travel channel went to various cities in Brazil and they said people really make a effort to help you and the english was fine. They also said between the cities, Belo Horizonte (capital of the Minas Gerais) state which is my city, people know more english than São Paulo and Rio which are the biggests tourist destinations in the country and I find that funny and interesting.
My mother knows how to speak English (have a teaching degree as well), Italian, Spanish, German, Ancient Greek and now is beginning to learn Mandarin and Russian. She went to english school which is what most people who have the money do but the rest she learned in our public university which is one of the best in Latin America all for free (Spanish and Rusian are self taught as well). I learned english because of the internet, study Japanese for some time now in a language school also and am taking Korean in the same public university.

I think most of those from 80-90-00 can at least understand english most of the time, since we grew up, with movies, series and games that didnt had subs so we just kinda learned, of course not all from those decades, since we need to put in count, the family and social background, the early on activities and etc

eu não me considerava fluente em inglês e não entendia o por quê mesmo que estivesse estudando a gramatica a quase 8 anos, tanto do ingles como do espanhol, então a uns meses atrás eu fui morar fora do país e alguma coisa desbloqueou em mim, o que me faltava era confiança em falar a lingua, não me importar se tava pronunciando corretamente, mas sim se eu estava sendo compreendido da forma que queria me expressar, em menos de 1 mês com todo o conhecimento que tinha já estava falando perfeitamente inglês e espanhol, sem sotaque e agora to aprendendo turco, pois, estou na turquia, ucraniano porque minha namorada é ucraniana e me ensina diariamente e italiano que é uma ponte mais curta ao romeno.

As a brazillian it's really sad that we don't use english as our second language and learning new languages feel lonely because you don't have anyone to speak to. Luckily internet came and we can speak online but it's not the same feeling as talking to someone close to you.
