    I am Italian, the older generations do not speak English at all, with some exceptions. The younger generations studied English at school, somebkdy speaks better but in general you cannot compare our average level in English with the level one finds in Northen Europe.
    In Naples I found many people who spoke Spanish very very well. 😮 this language is very popular in that city. Maybe because of Maradona? 😁

    Man, in fact, anglophones have an absolute duty to respect other cultures and speak other languages, because not always, and even most people, they don't know how to speak English, so Anglophones have to turn around and speak other languages and not expect that others speak simple English like this, that's how world listening works.

    In Italy, the average level of English proficiency amongst the adult population is lower than most other European countries. Many older Italians cannot speak any English at all.
    Unlike France, however, there is no cultural aversion to English in Italy.
    So Italian locals who were born after 1980 will probably be able to speak English, at least to a decent standard. But making an effort to speak as much Italian as you can will always be appreciated.

    I speak Spanish (my native language), English, Portuguese, German and Russian fluently. I love languages and spend much time and energy learning them... but for me it is terribly obnoxious the pressure that the Anglo-Saxon world (and many people who are not even from that world) makes to the rest of people to speak English. Leave people alone and respect other cultures...

    The start of video makes me give you this comment and advice. I started with English at the age of 3. Why? All software at the time was in english and if I wanted to play games and use software I had to understand english. So I learned by playing RPG games and using audiovisal software for my creations. This principle is called learn by playing, and it is extremly effective, because if you are having fun as you learn you remember faster and lack resistance which makes you remember time you was forcing yourrself to learn rather than stuff you learn. So learn by playing, it is effective and lots of fun.

    The answer is NO. Only in tourist places and among the young you'll find some italians able to maintain a decent conversation in english. In small, rural areas, forget it. Italy is probably one the worst places in Europe to communicate in english, nor even in France it's so bad.

      in all rural Europe you will struggle to find someone able to maintain a conversation in english. Trust me I lived in rural Germany and they are usually really good but not so good in small towns.

    What qualifies someone as “speaking” a language?

  • @TheAtomoh
    @TheAtomoh 3 месяца назад +1

    In Italy we learn english as if it were mathematics. They don't show us how native speakers speak the language and so we learn pronunciations and everything else from our teachers. On top of that, english is spoken in a different way compared to italian, so it often happens that we mix the two languages (maybe it happened to me now). Also we keep our italian accent when speaking english, because again, they don't show us how native speakers use the language.
    It took me 3/4 years to learn english by watching videos on youtube, and yet i still make mistakes when speaking the language. Sometimes i wish the world's lingua franca wasn't english but a romance language like spanish or portuguese.

    In small, rural areas in America, it is also difficult to find people who speak proper English. They speak something similar to English, but it seems only the other locals really understand it. 🤣🤣
