    Hi Jonny - I just stumbled upon your channel... love it! And yes, congrats on your license as well. Love to hear more about your background and what took you in this direction. My father-in-law used to propagate from seeds and literally had 200-300 gallon pots with seedlings and grafts too in hiss backyard - and for fun -... Roy was a good man... I hope for you success and keep educating us! Looking forward to knowing more and seeing more vides! Peace... Matt

    Hi Jonny, great to see these updates and to hear you're starting your own nursery! Will you be growing and selling japanese maples exclusively or other plants/trees as well? Im actually working towards doing the same over here in the Netherlands! Im also experimenting with all sorts of techniques to see what works.

      I am planning to specialize in Japanese Maples, but still grow a number of other ornamental trees/shrubs.

    Why not Air Layer the graft host top that you cut off? Seems would allow double use to me. Growing seeds where i am is hard due to dry heat (and hard for me to stay on top of the watering).
    Not getting hard freeze here, how do you suggest I stratify seeds? Please explain soil you use for your larger container grown trees 10-20" and larger. Great content thanks.

    Hi Jonny, Thanks for all the work you do to make your videos and help all of us along the way towards growing Japanese Maples. Just wanted to report that I have 40 seedlings growing in a protected tote (Used hardware cloth over tote, to let in air, but keep out birds, etc). Unlike you, I took the seedlings from the ground prior to having true leaves. I did this because some of the seedlings I marked for potting simply weren't there a few days later, and I didn't want to lose more. Anyway, they are all doing well in a corner spot with little wind, and about half have their full true leaves. Most of the rest are showing sprouts of their true leaves. I'm great at this part of the process (since nature does most of the work), but I have still never, EVER successfully kept a Japanese Maple alive until spring. They always look healthy and beautiful until about October, but eventually the Buffalo winter kills them (Zone 6B). I've been at this for four years, so I'm thinking of paying a local nursery (a very handsome sum, btw) to over winter those JM's from this year that are still healthy in October. I also wanted to mention that I found about half of my seedlings in the grass around my mature Japanese Maple, so if people can't find the number of seedlings they want in the mulch under the tree, check through the grass. The more I looked, the more I found. I left quite a few seedlings growing in the ground as a comparator to those that I transferred into my tote. Sorry so long-winded!

    • @JonnyMaple
      @JonnyMaple  Год назад

      Good tips and hopefully you can get the seedlings through the winter this year. I do agree that the grass can be a goof place to look as well, they are just harder to dig up.

    It's me again lol. I've searched You Tube for hours trying to find the answer to this ? NOWHERE to be found. How young can you start training a Japanese Maple for Bonsai? I just dug up a large seedling which is 21 inches tall. I don't know what age it is because I just started reading about JM 2 weeks ago. So I hope somebody can answer my ? Thanks

      In zone 3, you will have to bring the trees inside during the winter as they are only hardy down to Zone 5.

    From which country do you broadcast? I am from Spain
    I am saying this because I think that if I give you an address of a web page that also speaks English, you would learn a lot and avoid wasting time. In any case, I have been working with the maples for 40 years, I am going to give you some little advice (with good will for supposed )
    trying to make maple cuttings is very difficult for most species, (precisely for this reason they are grafted) so that the rootstock is tough against diseases and grow vigorous. although for whatever reason a specimen of a difficult variety would root you, because that tree would always be called sick (it would not grow well, it would have root problems etc etc. I repeat, that is why most maples are grafted
    what you have to plant is many rootstocks, which are common palmatun maples, which is where you will graft the species you want to have, the trees you have you can leave as mother trees and for each bud you cut from the mother tree, you could have a tree of that species, keep in mind that there are about 1500 varieties.
    Sorry for being so extensive but it makes me waste your time for something that many people have already gone through, if you are interested in the website, I will tell you that it is a maple shopping page, but they have videos dedicated to each variety of maple, very explanatory And as I told you before, they speak English too, can you tell me, okay?
    greetings

    Hi Jonny, I'm brand new to Japanese Maples and not to knowledgeable to gardening. I just picked up some seeds that fell from some J. M. trees 15 minutes ago. Should I put them in a ziplock bag and put in the drawer or should I stick them in the fridge? Also I noticed little small shoots ( 6 inches long) coming off the trunk. Can I pull them off the tree and try to root them . Thanks for your channel and I subscribed. Also how can I contact you to purchase some trees? I'm not sure where you are but I'm in the Atlanta , Ga. area.

    • @JonnyMaple
      @JonnyMaple  Год назад

      Seeds on Japanese Maples drop in the fall, so those seeds should have already gone through a natural winter stratification process, so you could put them in soil now and keep them most and hope for the best. I wouldn't try to root cuttings until until at the earliest June. I only sell plants locally right now.

      Not outside in the winter. They are hardy in general down to a zone 5... but that in in the ground. In pots, anything less than a zone 7 needs additional protection so the roots are not damaged by the cold.
