I’m a fairly experienced gardener but newly interested in Japanese maples. I ordered a couple of small JMs last year, placed them each in pots with a good potting mix and have kept them in appropriate sun/shade. Happy to say they’re doing well. I am looking forward to viewing more of your videos and increasing my knowledge and my JMs. Your videos are very helpful and I appreciate the details you share. Thanks a bunch.
A great video that covers the A to Z of potting an Acer. From the pot itself, the soil, watering, fertiliser and aftercare. They are fabulous Maples that are definitely worth the time and effort to nurture them. They then reward you with their magnificent Autumn colours no matter how brief they can be.
Thanks so much for this video. I've wanted a Japanese Maple for a long time, and I've finally decided to get one this year. I will be growing it in a pot, so this video was very clear and helpful with a lot of good information for someone new to Japanese Maples.

I just got a coral bark Japanese maple for my first japanese maple tree and your videos have been extremely helpful! I was thinking about planting it but now I'm going to keep it potted for a while I think.
Hello, have a two tamukeyama Japanese maple trees in zone 7a and before I knew anything about planting I planted them in full son. They are doing very well. I water them daily at about 11 am before it gets extremely hot so that they can handle the extreme heat. I have had them for 6 years and they are gorgeous. Just sharing but I feel really bad for them now that I know better. 😢
Very informative video. I live in zone 5 and would like a video on how to manage my Japanese dwarf container maples. How do I know when it is time to place in my garage? Should I keep the window shades closed throughout the winter in the garage? How much do I water them in the winter? Will opening my garage door when parking and removing my car cause problems for the trees? Should I cover them with burlap in the garage? How do I know when to take them out for the spring? I have so many questions that you don't really get good information anywhere.
@@margaretodamo6784Because our winters are brutal, and the trees and plants are in containers, not the ground. Thank you very informative. I missed how you add the fertilizer to your maple tree. During a pot soil change, or as liquid wash? At what ratio? Thank you again. BTW I just acquired a dwarf Crimson Queen maple. but noticed leaf burn on the tree. How long before it recovers?
I have mine in the ground for about 6 months and is maybe 2 years old when I bought it. I have no real sheltered spot in the ground for it and where I have it not it's getting some abuse so I might put it into a pot. Good to know they can do well in pots so I might just keep it as a potted tree/shrub. It's an Acer palladium or so.

I just bought a 'tree fertilizer' based on the local nursery's suggestion. Do we need to put some pebbles or fine bark at the bottom of the pot to prevent root rot? We had ours in the East side of the house. When it gets to 80-90 deg, do we water 2/wk or 3/wk? Thanks!

Nice video, I like your style. I'm getting some distorted leaf growth on my seedlings, any ideas what causes that? They are very asymmetrical and some even have black curled tips. Seems to have started only on the latest new leaves but overall growth has slowed...
In starting a new tree in a bucket, I drill 2 holes on the outside about 3 inches up. Letting the tree reach for water and leaving some water sit on the bottom for when I am out of town. Also something was eating the new leaves, after spraying with insecticidal soap it stopped.
I grow these trees from seeds harvested from mature trees in my garden. Every spring, I lose a significant proportion of my stock - the leaves seem to be emerging well but then just wilt, and the tree dies. In some cases the bark just above compost level looks bare and in others the small trees pull out easily with little root development. It helps a lot watching your videos! Do you think I can repot some of my maples now in July, or do I have to wait for the fall? I purchased some new now and they came in very small pots.
I generally like to do it in the Spring, but as long as you are careful and keep it out of intense heat, you should be fine doing it now. I would do it in the late afternoon when it cools off, so it can have a cool night before going into a hot day to help.
Hi. Your video is very helpful for me : ) I bought a Japanese Maple and it is unfortunately died because of afternoon sun :/ what can I do to bring it back? : )

Have you ever tried the root pruning pots? They seem to do really well no matter what you put in them. Often when I buy trees from a nursery, or even worse a big box store, the roots are a tangled mess from the round pots. I know your up potting and that's great but a lot of places you can buy from don't. I've seen so many planted trees dying lately after 2,3,4 years. I often think the circling roots are to blame, so before I stick one in the ground I get aggressive with the roots. Anything I can't straighten out gets cut because these tree's dying in ground after a few years is not something you want to see. And that goes for any tree really. The bigger the tree, the more thorough you should be.
The important thing is that it is protected from the hot afternoon sun, so an area that is shaded in the afternoon would be best. In the ground is always preferable in my opinion.

Hey Jonny, i live in Michigan and the winters are quite harsh. What do you recommend for care of small trees that you create from cuttings during the winter months?
I have not tried the Acid mix with Japanese Maples, because the regular soil has worked so well. Japanese Maples like very slightly acidic soil, and the acid mix may be too acidic. The pH of the regular G&B potting soil is in the ideal range for Japanese Maples.
I would like to propgate a lace leaf japanesse red maple and put itnin a pot. Also i am airlayering a snow mountain and want to do same with it.any help would be welcome. I am 73 and just learning.
Interesting that you swear by the regular potting soil. I see a lot of potted maple folks using pine mulch+moss+perlite or pine mulch+soil+perlite at something like a 75/20/5 ratio for their trees. I have about half my trees in potting soil (those have been going for a couple of years) but this year I decided to give the mulch potting a try with a few. They're all doing fine so far, though I do worry a bit more about the mulch mix drying out faster if I have to leave the house for a week or more during the summer months. Guessing either way they're generally fairly forgiving trees as long as you don't waterlog them or let them dry out. I have an orangeola living in red clay that's kicking just fine (it's on a hill though so luckily naturally drains).
@@JonnyMaple Depending on where someone lives I could see preferring one mix more than another. Potting soil is going to keep them more moist than a mulch mix which is good in a warmer area without a lot of rain. I always worry about mine in potting soil a bit during the winter in the PNW since it's a solid 5 or 6 months of daily rain. I've definitely lost a lot of non-maple plants planted in soil that can't handle soggy clay over the course of our winters, but mine with potting soil keep coming back fine so far. I'll see how these mulch mixes work this year. Tough to experiment on 200 dollar trees, though haha.
I’m in Zone 5 and I have to protect my trees that are in a pot. The roots will definitely get too cold if left out during the winter. You should be okay in zone 6 and above though. I’d still bring them next to the house or garage in zone 6 though.
You were doing well, talking about container Japanese Maples. Then you came to root pruning and you just skipped on to something else and never came back. :(
Overwatering will kill these trees. A lot of people just pot them with pine bark, moss, and perlite and even then if you use too much moss for one that is in a shadier area you're endangering its root system if it is unable to air out between waterings.

In the NE protecting them from winter would be a great idea. Here in my zone 8 garden, it is unnecessary.
Using Shenandoah Premium Potting mix ph is around 5.5-6
Do you use 50/50 for soil or just potting soil?
When you say you repot every season, does season mean 'growing year' or do you mean spring, summer, fall?
Growing year
Hey Jonny, i live in Michigan and the winters are quite harsh. What do you recommend for care of small trees that you create from cuttings during the winter months?
I would recommend either bringing them into a greenhouse, or indoors to protect them from the really low temps.
@@JonnyMaple thank you so much for the reply. My father keeps his polebarn at 40-50° F all winter. Is that too cold still?
@@Johnnyboy0928that should be fine
Why not use G&B Acid Mix which is specifically for conifers and maples and other acid loving plants..
I have not tried the Acid mix with Japanese Maples, because the regular soil has worked so well. Japanese Maples like very slightly acidic soil, and the acid mix may be too acidic. The pH of the regular G&B potting soil is in the ideal range for Japanese Maples.
This was excellent!
Thank you!
I would like to propgate a lace leaf japanesse red maple and put itnin a pot. Also i am airlayering a snow mountain and want to do same with it.any help would be welcome. I am 73 and just learning.
I have a video about air layering on my channel. I would give that a try.
@@JonnyMaple i know how to sir layer just not sure how to plant snow fountain in a pot also japanesse lace leaf
@@JonnyMaple i cant find it
Feel like I'm watching a sales pitch for G&B potting soil.
Haha... it is good soil though.
I guess they can thrive in different types of soil. I have grow them in potting soil for 6+ years and my maples are healthy.
Can thesemaples over🎉winter in pot on zone 6
How do you keep trees straight?
You need to stake them.
Keep them away from the rainbow eucalyptus
Were in the middle of a dry period. Potted plants are drying out quickly. Do you recommend mulching the surface?
I don't mulch mine, and they do fine in my zone 8 garden.
Thanks for a great video!🍁🍁🍁
Are seeds viable in container grown japanese maples?
Yes
Timing of repotting?
Thank you!
Love your videos! I would like to buy a maple from you!
Thanks. I don't ship plants right now.
Hi Jonny, what city/state are you in?

Hello ❤
Would Japanese Maples survive cold winters in pots?
I’m in Zone 5 and I have to protect my trees that are in a pot. The roots will definitely get too cold if left out during the winter. You should be okay in zone 6 and above though. I’d still bring them next to the house or garage in zone 6 though.

You were doing well, talking about container Japanese Maples. Then you came to root pruning and you just skipped on to something else and never came back. :(
I will discuss this topic more in the future and film the process on one of my trees.

You are here to talk about growing the Japanese maple or to sell the soil?? the tips you gave is just buying these products you promote?
You have a tik tok?
No, I am not on tik tok.
Be careful with this obsession with very drained soils like those shown in the video. stop wasting water.
WOW! The Root system is way different than other trees. Root rot is an issue.
Overwatering will kill these trees. A lot of people just pot them with pine bark, moss, and perlite and even then if you use too much moss for one that is in a shadier area you're endangering its root system if it is unable to air out between waterings.
What’s that’s crazy maple in the first 30 seconds
Are you referring to the Acer palmatum "Butterfly"?
