  • Love Trader Joe’s or not, it’s hard to deny they have a winning formula. The aisles & shelves are filled with a bounty of unique edible goodies and potent potables, and there’s always something new to try around the next corner.
I’ll admit that I’m a big fan of Trader Joe’s, and have been for many years, but I couldn’t quite pin down what keeps me coming back 20 years later. So why are People like me Nuts for Trader Joe’s? And what makes Trader Joe’s possibly the best Grocery Store in the World, despite not having the largest selection or the even lowest prices?

Today is only my second day working at Trader Joe’s and I feel like I’m in coworker haven. My coworkers and managers are very supportive and friendly. I’ve been working in customer service for over 25 years and I never knew that this kind of environment existed, at least at my store. Traders Joe’s, where have you been all my life. 😍

I drive 23 miles and pass multiple grocery stores each week to shop at TJ's! I LOVE this place!~ Super friendly staff is always there to help (and always plenty of help), unique
products, meat and seafoods that are fresh and portioned for one or two people and are vacuumed packed which is perfect for proper storage. The produce is fresh and always
a good selection. Baked goods are awesome and just love the overall 'feel' of this place. The flowers they offer are phenomenal... all of this at really good prices! This place
rates a perfect 10 in my book.

It's a very interesting store! Someone mentioned that it appeals to Millenials--sure--but I am 72. I am certainly not alone there as a senior (or as a fan).. I also see very young families and all ages in between. Things to buy there: nuts, coffee, bagged lettuce; cheeses; all sorts of frozen food (including things like veggies and fruit(); specialty veggies, packaged items, etc. I don't think their produce is wonderful and their meat is not so great (you are totally right). When I eat more vegetarian, it works well. Friendly place and very helpful. BTW, they do a pretty good job with the covid 19 thing--cleaning, doing the social distance, and yet keeping.a friendly vibe.

At my TJs here in San Diego, I feel like it is a pretty good mix of all ages up into 70s and 80s. I agree with your take on good things to buy there. It tends to be my mid-week holdover between Costco trips, so if I need meat, I’ll buy it, but it’s a bit overpriced. TJs has always been super friendly, and the way the handle COVID is excellent IMO. And one thing I have come to the conclusion NOT to buy: just about any sort of fresh baked goods with a TJs label. I have tried just about everything for years now, and they tend to be dry, in some cases bland, and frankly overpriced. But the Pumpkin craze is on, so go get something weird like Pumpkin empanadas!

Hmmm...when I first moved out into the real world I did a comparison of grocery stores in my area by buying my favorites at a selection of stores ranging from Wally World to Whole Paycheck. I was surprised when only Walmart came out cheaper than Trader Joe's.

I work at a small family grocer/cafe/wine shop with a similar vibe to Joe's. Everyone there does everything. We're not micromanaged, everyone sets their own goals and we're very knowledgable about our products. It's a great environment and the pay is aight. Best of all no corporate bullshit. I go to the owner's house for dinner on Holidays and he's in his office 6 days a week. This is how businesses should be run!

Trader Joe's is simply a happy place to visit & shop. Beautiful, healthy flowers & plants will make you smile even before you enter the store. After work or studies, TJ's is where I go for a break in my day. Sometimes I just want to taste the offering of the day, sample a small cup of exotic coffee or use the super clean rest room. The staff gets to know you when you're a regular & all are super friendly. I often talk to the employees at checkout and find many have come to Ft. Lauderdale from TJ's in other cities. TJ's is one of the best companies to work for...good salaries, benefits, both full + part time work available. TJ's is definitely an ADVENTURE IN EATING. Be sure and check out some of the ethnic foods, bowls, pizzas etc. etc. in the freezer case that are mostly $5 or less. Admittedly, I am a serious Trader Joe's fan!

Like most things in the UK it trails way behind the USA, there's nothing like Trader Joe's here, there is Whole Foods in London, but it's not national, and the only decent organic locally sourced supermarket is Booths in the North. I so wish I lived in the States.

I don't think TJ is expensive in general, but maybe because I'm used to paying a little more or foods are just becoming more expensive everywhere. TJ is a lot cheaper and depends on what you're buying is better than WholeFoods. They have a bigger selection of raw imported cheese. Their olive oil is better too. I have found their Greek EVOO with pack date fresher than 90 days old, meaning the oil is pressed and bottled less than 3 months ago from Greece. They have arguably the best selection of raw nuts. Their meat selection isn't very good though with not many grassfed selection, maybe this is based on regions.
Lately though Kroger have been undercutting them in the healthy food area, so I probably divide my food budget between these two stores most.
Out of all the health food stores I've been in the US; TJ, FreshThyme, WholeFoods and Sprouts, I'd say Sprouts is best from the two times I visited it. WholeFoods is my least favorite after Amazon bought them, they sell a lot of overpriced unhealthy junk now and downsized the portions/servings for everything to baby size. FreshThymes overcharge everything and pay their employees too little from what I'm gathering.

    • @TwoBitHistory

Sprouts is pretty good, I use them for produce mostly. TJs is just closer and always has something new to try.

the short overhead and the self branded items are what makes that profit margin seem larger. probably own their own shipping company also keeping profits inside the actual business also. so with that being said its like dollar general but less ghetto.

My wife and I love Trader Joe's, but there is an unfortunate company bias to only place their stores in large urban cities. So it seems like they're catering more toward the millennial generation who seem to gravitate to large urban centers, and there seems to be no interest in placing their stores where those of us who live in the heartland of middle America would find them more convenient. We have to travel 1 1/2 to 3 hours to get to the nearest TJ stores. I guess our money isn't good enough for them.

    • @BK-uy9nj

Jesus, stereotyping much? Maybe move out of the backwoods so you don’t have to drive hours to get a carton of milk. They’re chains so a store owner can be any one. It’s not like Trader Joes purposely planted stores far away from you…

@@TwoBitHistory HEB has an amazing selection of everything. They make a point to have as many products and produce from Texas as they possibly can. So it's really easy to support Texas and local brands. When I was in college our HEB had a "happy hour" where you could get a large pizza made fresh with their ingredients and produce and wither two beers or 2 glasses of wine for $10. And if that's not the perfect way to start your weekly grocery trip, then I don't know what is.

      @TwoBitHistory  5 лет назад +1

Just because it’s part of Aldi, does not mean it is cheap. It is in fact not cheap. However, for the quality you get on many items, it is priced below the competition (or there isn’t really any competition). I wouldn’t say it is a rich hipster person place, as I am neither. Go inside one day and just see what’s what. No need to buy anything. I think the frozen section might surprise you.

Trader Joe's makes a point not to use preservatives on their products, including their breads. Which is why of you don't eat the bread in a week or less, it will mold unlike other bread brands that do have preservatives which extend their shelf life.
