The problem with Nairobi is the number of international corporations and other organisations choosing it as their Africa headquarters. The influx of foreigners is what's making it so expensive.
@Chukey Gentrification and Oppression are 'siblings' - those that are Gentrified have to seek elsewhere to thrive, while the Capitalist MINDs Sweeping in have to pay the cost higher for so called Urbanisation, rent hikes, taxation hikes causing financial Oppression etc. NYC is a great example and many other Hubs but at the end of the day NO one WINS. Look at what's happened to NYC .... folk have left because in this season MANY are having a Rude AWAKENING to whats at stake.
Rent KES 200K seems very high. I would say that should have been half, even in very good areas and furnished, maybe max KES 120K. One thing with housing in Nairobi is that you can find 2 very similar housings but very different in price, like one at 75K then the other at 130K. Housing is really where it is worth bargaining and research.
From what he explains an apartment that all utility Bill's included that was abit fair. Guess he got an airbnb at westlands that is a reasonable price average of 7k per day plus it's a 2bd and has housekeeping
While i appreciate the video, the viewers should know that his budget is more inline with a super-touristy short-term visitor. Ive lived in the same area - westlands, 2bdr - for years as a westerner and my costs are much lower. My phone is 1k for 5gb, food can be 700/day or less if you eat at more local restaurants or get hot food from the naivas around the corner, and I only know of 2 clubs in all of kenya that charge for entrance. I give him a pass on transportation because i cant expect him to know how to use local transportation - i pay 5-7k/month, including uber. Btw, i think skynest is closer to an extended stay luxury hotel instead of an apt. My apt is literally 2 streets away and i pay 70k + ~10k utilities but with no housekeeping. My monthly budget rarely exceed $1800. Compared to JNB, nairobi eats you on housing, while jo-berg gets you on transportation, phone, and misc expenses. Again, appreciate the video. It is very informative, but his budget is definitely on the high end - and he kinda admits it.
That was very reasonable especially when taking into consideration the standard of living is essentially well above that here in the US. I mean where in the US can you live in a 2BR in a nice area with amenities, all utilities, house keeping 3 times a week, eat out daily, go out regularly and take Ubers everywhere? No where! 🤣
Yeah data in SA is ridiculously expensive, in Kenya data is extremely cheap with great speeds and coverage and wi-fi is cheap too. SA however has great views, can't wait to go back to Jo'burg and Capetown
There is no reason why our government makes data expensive for us, they own Vodacom Africa, MTN, Telkom and they even have equal shares with government of Kenya in the largest Network service in Kenya through Vodafone but this bastard's still find a way to make our data most expensive while our own MTN is cheaper in other countries, they just want less South Africans to have access to information that is. If more people are online, they will see the bullshit they busy with and they will wake up
Hey Julian, thanks for sharing...I think that considering your lifestyle and standards, your expenditure is not unreasonable. As long it was your own hard-earned money you were using, no one should judge you if you got what you wanted and it represented good value for you. I wish you had vlogged a bit more about your experiences in Nairobi (especially your going out adventures) but hopefully, there will be a next time 😄
If you are making American dollars living in Kenya is very affordable cause of the currency exchange! 6 of us went on vacation flights and all inclusive resort in Mombasa for $1100 for a week! Love my country Kenya!
Hey Julian! Can you do a cost of living video on Johannesburg and Cape Town please? Because of you, I’m going to visit South Africa next year 🥰 and I want to be fully prepared! 😊
Cape Town is definitely more expensive than Joburg. Cape Town is a coastal city with beautiful beaches, and landscapes so you’ll definitely get your money’s worth while on the other hand, Joburg has a lot of activities (depending on what you’re into). Joburg tends to be more dangerous, depending on where you are. Consider visiting surrounding areas as well, they tend to be safer than the cities and you’ll get the “African” experience without it being out of your comfort zone. For example., Mpumalanga has amazing places to see. Of course I’m assuming your intention is to visit and tour and not to move here. Have a safe trip and perhaps we’ll bump into each other 🥰🥰🥰
If you go for the cheapest places you won't be happy. But if you're an American I think even the expensive places will be affordable for you. All the best. ☺️
You're spending what you worked hard for and can afford so none of us re entitled to judging you. Maybe consider hiring someone to cook for you a couple of times a week.
Hi Julian, I'm new to your page and have recently watched your pod, the one on your visit to the beach, now this one about your expenses in Kenya. It all sounds reasonable given your seemly standard of living, [ nice high-rise apartment living space ] from the area visible on screen. I just want to say, I'm a male African and I find cooking quite therapeutic and self-gratifying, especially when I want to escape the endless routine of the social and civic norms daily. Please try it sometimes, start with small simple projects like fresh veggies broiled with a touch of butter and a hint of brown sugar sprinkled, steamed white/brown rice at medium temperature, sauté a piece of fish [ purchased already cleaned and washed ], OfCourse in a sauce pan with a measured bit of water, with olive oil added and seasoned with spices, sprinkled with black pepper and a hint of sea salt, flip the fish over after a few minutes, [ you don't want to overcook it also use medium heat, after, turned down to low heat for simmering and then VOILA ! You've prepared yourself a gorgeous, healthy and tasty meal. A glass of white wine will do with fish. I too skip breakfast most mornings but try to have a cup of hot fluid, like maybe tea [ mint is very good ] or coffee. I'll be visiting Kenya, hopefully next Summer. I've blogged and have gotten to learn a bit about Nairobi. Enjoy Kenya and stay careful...Congratulations on your apartment.
Have to agree....South Africa in general offers better value for money in terms of real estate, majorly because of the cost of land. In Kenya the policy is more liberal and people hold land outrightly for speculation. The cost of construction is jst about the same even though RSA offers better quality and finishing for the same cost because of larger manufacturing that standardises thing like aluminium windows and so on.In addition, you have access to better infrastructure in South Africa cz obviously it's the more developed one. The South african economy is about 3 times larger than Kenya's. What you paid for data is what a 5 person household pays for wifi for the whole month in Kenya. Internet is way cheaper than South Africa. All in all, from low income to middle class, the experience in terms of lifestyle is more or less the same but as you approach the upper class and upper-middle class segments, South Africa has incredible value for money and not jst verses Kenya but the entire continent! I'm talking things like easy access to and cheaper loans, mortgages, education. The top schools like Hilton college are about 30% cheaper than the top schools in Kenya. Cars are cheaper, quality real estate is cheaper in South Africa. Land in the Most exclusive neighbourhood in Kenya,Muthaiga,is double what it would sell for in Bishopscourt or Constantia. It is also slightly more expensive than what it would go for in Steyn City. Runda is kind of like Waterfall but land 2 times more expensive. The beaches in Umhlanga and the entire Durban are about 5 times more expensive than the ones in Kenya though. The kenyan beaches are the better ones here. Also,Kenya is waaaaaaay safer. Both good ,progressive and Liberal countries
Land grabbing is a national sport in Kenya (quite possibly in other African countries also). Having lived part time in Kenya for almost 10 years, I have never, ever experienced anything like the scale of stealing land, selling other peoples land, simply just moving into other peoples land and property. Mind blowing ..... and I don't think I will ever get used to the sheer arrogance by which people just grab others property.
My expense as a full time nqirobian is a quarter of that amount. Ofcourse it largely depends on area that you live and your cost of eating out was way to much. That is almost my 2 months rent 😅😜
Please do a South Africa vs Nairobi! I lived in Nairobi for about a year and it was very expensive especially in comparison to Kampala. I remember South Africa being affordable, but that was for a vacation

200k a month for a 2 bed apartment in Nairobi is luxury style living. You can get a fully furnished 2 br in Westlands for half that amount and it will be nice. Still you're right and even worse Nairobi is the most expensive city in Africa. I'm Kenyan and I am aware. I have no feelings attached to data so yes call a spade a spade.
African Queen, I know it feels that way as a Kenyan living in Kenya but Nairobi is by far not the most expensive city in Africa... Dakar, Pretoria, Luanda are but a few more expensive cities than Nairobi.
Yikes Julian! The Grand Total for ALL of your expenses for the month is what I pay ONLY for rent (and NOTHING ELSE) in the San Francisco Bay Area... That's a bargain! Thanks for the video, be safe and take care!

You should engage a househelp to cook and do the shopping n cleaning. She costs about 70 Dollars full time a month. That would have saved you a lot and food is good (contract an elderly person - best food would be from a Muslima)
I think your expenditure is pretty decent to be honest!.. in regards to your network, I'd say go with RAIN you get unlimited coverage for your cellphone for R300 per month. You're paying way too much for data..
Thanks immensely for your elucidation in terms of your monthly expenses Julian. You live an opulent lifestyle; I admire your courage to explore the 🌎 world. Question: how you thought about hiring a local cook to cook for you?

Julian, you are a bright, shining light radiating joy! Budgeting/costs are good for people to know! You may spend a lot on eating out but a lot of people would likely do the same. Yes, you're staying in luxury accommodations and paying for that, but you're getting a lot of amenities which if you were staying in a hotel would be an astronomical monthly cost--and you might not even have as nice of accomodations or amenities! It's much more cost efficient to rent an apartment for a month or whatever time frame than a hotel room. It might be worthwhile to do a cost comparison sometime. I hope your day is filled with the activities and people you enjoy! Sending love from Oregon!
I like your apartment and your voice haha. Thanks for this breakdown but the apartment you got might have been expensive if it was an Airbnb. Most apartments in Westlands aren't that expensive. You'd get like 100k KES a month or even 50k KES a month

I understand about the food expense lol. I love me some food so it's usually my biggest cost aside from rent. But I live in Mexico and it's way more affordable.
That's reasonable. I spend R4 500.00 on phones per month, but that's only because I have 5 contracts - and 4 of them are being used by family and close friends. For groceries, I easily spend R7000.00 a month. So you're not extravagant at all.

Fact: 75% of Kenyans make less than ksh50,000 per month (less than $500 per month). Also: the living wage outside of Nairobi is about ksh35,000 (about $300 per month) Another fact: less than 80,000 Kenyans TOTAL, make ksh100,000 or more a month (less than $1000 per month). Nevertheless, Kenya is one of the most beautiful and livable countries in the world. She is the country of my birth and I so look forward to retiring there in a few years. I put this information out there so you know that Julian's experience in Kenya is a reality for about 1% of the top 1% of Kenyan citizens. Not judging Julian at all! Who wouldn't aspire to living that lifestyle?! If he can do it, more power to him! I'm sure he works hard for his money! I've been doing my research to prepare myself for retirement in Kenya, and that is how I came across this video. Just wanted y'all to know that it is SO possible to live very comfortably in Kenya over the long term on less than half of what Julian spent! Especially on food! If you shop the local markets and cook for yourself, (heck, you could hire a fulltime cook and still not pay half of what he spent on food in one month! [I plan on doing just that!]) you could reduce that expense to less than a quarter of what he paid! If you are not addicted to living in Nairobi so you can own your own house or apartment (not that difficult to do especially if you are coming to Kenya having made a US or European salary for a while!...and planning very well ahead) your 100k will go all that much farther! Do your research and plan accordingly, and welcome to Kenya!

@@LizzNjagah Nairobi is the most expensive city in Africa for sure
don’t feel bad about treating yourself doll you deserve it !
No hospital/medical bills. Amen! 👍
We are not coming for you but, wow.... JULIAN.
Lol we love this for you. MVV here. Thanks for coming back to South Africa 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
If you have that skrilla don't be embarrassed to use it.. You worked hard for it and so,,,, You deserve to enjoy yourself bruh.. 💯💯💯
That's 5 people salary...😂😂
Enjoy your Blessings Julian...,🧘🏾♀️💕
Yikes Julian!
The Grand Total for ALL of your expenses for the month is what I pay ONLY for rent (and NOTHING ELSE) in the San Francisco Bay Area...
That's a bargain!
Thanks for the video, be safe and take care!
Guilty as charged! I watched prolly all ur vids and just recently subscribed. ❤️ ur positive vibe. Ya vids be on point. Visited 🇿🇦 in 2019…life changing.
Stay blessed up 🇯🇲.
Save for your affinity to super luxurious apartments in the most prime neighborhood in Nairobi, your other expenses were relatively affordable.
As someone who is moving to Kenya. This was really helpful . Making this a series is definitely a good idea.
Karibu Kenya 🇰🇪
And you are welcome to our beautiful country. Karibu Kenya.
Do you watch Jim Nduruchi
Enjoy your stay there
You can get a cheap prizez than what he mentioned for almost the same quality I guess next time he will be Nairobi he will get good prizes, all iam trying to say is that take time to settle in Kenya don't be in a rush pole pole as Kenyans say
Vodacom is fastest and cheaper if you use it as WiFi and it's great I pay R244 for 80G day and 50G night for 30 days
Is that in Kenya or South Africa?

This was very helpful. Love these cost of living videos. Hopefully there will be a cost of living for Johannesburg!!
Great vid and welcome back to KENYA 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪
He's in Joburg, South Africa here
“That’s just not something I resonate with”…This needs to be my life’s new motto because cooking ain’t it😩😭
😂
Chile, I work from 8-5 only to cook a whole meal for another hour or 2? That and do the dishes? Please, call me lazy but I work to ease my lifestyle.
You should engage a househelp to cook and do the shopping n cleaning. She costs about 70 Dollars full time a month. That would have saved you a lot and food is good (contract an elderly person - best food would be from a Muslima)
When you said Petrol and not Gas🥲
Love this video boo!!!! Thank you for the addition!
And me am a Kenyan I have spend 6 thousand in 3 weeks Daah I will book that apartment you was next time ❤️
What a beautiful apartment, keep smiling
that apartment is awesome, especially from where you are seated!
I think your expenditure is pretty decent to be honest!.. in regards to your network, I'd say go with RAIN you get unlimited coverage for your cellphone for R300 per month. You're paying way too much for data..
Love when you talk budget 😄👍🏽👍🏽❤️
That view behind you is Gorgeous 🌞
Thank you. As a African I appreciate you spreading positive vibes. You've gained a subscriber.
Real estate in Nairobi is just out of this world... is a crazy bubble that will soon burst.
Thanks immensely for your elucidation in terms of your monthly expenses Julian. You live an opulent lifestyle; I admire your courage to explore the 🌎 world. Question: how you thought about hiring a local cook to cook for you?
That's a great idea
That’s exactly what I do when in Ghana and Nigeria.
71,500 dallaz for food (my entire year food budget)
19,900 transport (supa metro guy here, no comment)
4,166 for the phone bill (LOL - Telkom 1k is 50gb + a K for Safaricom minutes 😂)
35,500 to parre & alcohol 😂 (why?)
200K for rent 😱 where did we go wrong as a country...
Total = 343K (Jesus) 😬
Can live like a king of a small chiefdom called "Igwenogwu" with a third of that for a month 😁
@Apples. For real, I mean of all things, it had to be "food deliveries" - I can comfortable feed 100 people & get left with enough change for sodas + water 😁😁
@Apples. & the fact that people still use Safaricom airtime to make calls. I've a friend who didn't know we make conference calls using minutes 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣pesaaa tuuu

@@eldios831 😂😂 for real.. I knew once, a guy gambled away 1.5m in a couple of hours & he went about his day like nothing happened. We lived in the same area, travelling on different lanes.. 😁
Another informative video. 🙌🏽

Julie , you know we part of your life, so i don’t think you won’t mind showing us the new maybe mr right for you
I want to live in such an apartment in future...the lighting is perfect
Julian please try to use Telkom is much better than Vodacom & MTN
You should be at 1+ million subscribers by now, you definitely have the potential to so do. Just give your subscribers more vlogs; remember, a lot of your viewers have to see your life and adventures through your eyes. I love your videos. I know a million subscribers sound like a lot to achieve but you have that uniqueness about yourself that can draw a huge following.
Ah not us binge watching all your videos. You are such a vibe. Love from 🇰🇪
Julian, you are a bright, shining light radiating joy!
I hope you make it to a 100K subbies by the end of the year. Keep the video’s coming I love it!
Yaani huyu msee bado ako Kenya? I watched his video coming to Nairobi months ago, thought he already left 😅. We truly are hospitable!

you make this seem soOooo doable. Thanks for the inspiration.

Just aby the way Albino, for food in Ugandan shillings it's 2340,000 ugx. Am in 😲
I like your apartment and your voice haha. Thanks for this breakdown but the apartment you got might have been expensive if it was an Airbnb. Most apartments in Westlands aren't that expensive. You'd get like 100k KES a month or even 50k KES a month
Yes! Thank you so much for this information Julian💕
Hey HUNNIESZZ. What some influencers are saying. Alot of that most people watch on there TV they have to hit the 3 small dots and the subscribe feature will . I think thats what they said. Hope this help. Love love Your content and Vibe❤
I understand about the food expense lol. I love me some food so it's usually my biggest cost aside from rent. But I live in Mexico and it's way more affordable.
Lol I heard u Julian❤️.I'm not only watching,I just subscribed❤️❤️

Hey 👋 Julian !🌞 your skin is flawless 🥰✨✨
“i wanted it so i got it” period!
Great info as always! Your expenses seem very reasonable especially considering you are living your best life ✨
Do you watch Jim Nduruchi
I'm here just cz I saw the name of my country. Much love from 🇸🇿🇸🇿
That's reasonable. I spend R4 500.00 on phones per month, but that's only because I have 5 contracts - and 4 of them are being used by family and close friends. For groceries, I easily spend R7000.00 a month. So you're not extravagant at all.
Uhmmm...wena na!
@@Sidehustleonline That's uncalled for and please don't be unnecessarily rude. I'm sure you know that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. You've clearly read my comment out of context and I forgive you for your lack of comprehension.
@@Cebo88 please explain how I was rude 😆 I know very well its sarcasm ain't stupid as you think and "Wena na" is definitely not rude it simply means "I see you" which language do you speak coz someone who is of Sotho'Tswana knows what that frase is just like saying "bathong" depends how you take it but it's not rude. Relax don't stress yourself ka social media I can be very rude but that one aowa trust me when I say i wasn't been rude.
@@Sidehustleonline You were being sarcastic and very witless actually. You are continuing along the same horrifying vein when you say that 'it's just social media and I shouldn't take it seriously'. Newsflash, social media is a living medium and it's kept alive by human beings interacting, not robots. Don't disrespect me and then rubbish my responses by framing them as serious. In your own words 'you can be very rude'. You just told me what you are, and I believe you.
Please think of buying life insurance if you don't have any with your expenses I pray health and life insurance that you should have you to young to waste money eating out hire someone to come cook you at least few meals weekly or every other week and put money to other important things but other than that keep living that good life
You keep getting cuter.
Thanks for sharing…looking to take my sabbatical next summer S.AFRICA IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST SO VERY helpful info. ALSO I JUST SPENT $500 @ Costco yesterday so that is not bad for a month 🤣
Try telkom in South Africa.... Very reasonable on data
Or rain
Except for the food you did okay. Honestly it would be cheaper to get a chef to shop ,cook and then stock up your fridge every week. But again not bad
The amount you spent on food from the food apps was a lot but I'd probably spend as much if I had the money 😂 Good food is important
Great life u have curated for urself your content is superb.....
