Great video. About two weeks ago, I planted about 50 sweet potatoes slips in a lifeless sandy plot. I added some bone meal and blood meal. We'll see how they they grow and produce in about 100 days. Thanks and keep up the great content.

I’m very consistent with my sweet potatoes harvests.
5 years trying, never got anything. BUT I’ve always used good soil. I’m gonna make one of the raised beds more lome and sand this time. We’ll see!

That lifeless soil as you call it looks exactly like my whole garden here in SE North Carolina where I have raised literal tons of vegetables. Year after year some things do great, others not so much, but it always amazes me at how much can be grown in what is basically sand. I just planted sweet potatoes for the very first time so we'll see how they do. I ordered the porto rico variety that you recommend. Great video by the way!

Came back to say that dealing with sandy soil is the biggest pain ever. I have a vineyard planted in my soil which is basically an ancient sand deposit on the side of a mountain and its the worst soil I have ever seen, been throwing tons of humic acids and etc at it since compost around here is so bad its useless. Also been throwing fertilizers at it and finally have been making progress amending it but everytime i fix one problem soil tests have another.

My understanding after more years in the garden than Greg ( I'm old) you use your poor soil for sweet taters and okree. It's always worked pretty good for us and we didn't have to have a ladder to cut the okree, it usually stayed around 4 to 5 ft tall and produced like crazy. My daddy was a firm believer in 10-10-10 but didn't give much of that to the okree and very little to the sweet taters. If he was alive today he might think me a crackpot for using organics. Makes me smile to think of what he might say. We learned so much more about soil health than they had access to in the fifties and it's proven to me that it works for healthy plants and less disease issues

My best harvest was when I planted a row in between the tomato plants in a raised bed. I used the puerto rico bush and once the tomatoes were done I cut them off and let the sweet potatoes take over. I got 3 lbs per plant.

Treat 'em like a dirty dog... like ya hate 'em... abuse 'em and ignore 'em. That's how I grow 'em in my un-fertilized sand run, in the direct sun in Ocala. Cuss 'em in the morning over the walk-about with coffee.

My father-inlaw used to plant sweet taters in lifeless sandy red clay and I didn't say anything out of respect but I thought it was crazy. Harvest time came and he had wheelbarrows full. LOL Glad I didn't say anything.
He would cover corn seed with a hoe and pack down the soil with his feet as he moved down the row. I thought to myself that he was overdoing it but I remained quite. I covered my rows with a hoe and went back down the row tamping the soil with the back of a hoe. His rows came up faster and had better germination. I walk down the row and pack the seed in tight now.

It can definitely be done. I grew in some of the worst soil you can grow in which is sand by the beach. Not only did I have to deal with soil that didn't perk well if water was sprayed at the surface but I also had to deal with salty soil and humid salt air. I figured out that mixing some black kow directly into the spots the plants went in with nutrients did the best. I also had to water more frequently underground with tubing that had drip emitters. Top watering did not work well as it would just roll away from the plant and sit on the sand and evaporate. Cotton, tobacco and some corn grows really good in that soil but not much of anything else other than weeds without a bit of work. I remember doing an NKP test on that soil and found that it had absolutely no nutrients and was loaded with copper and iron which is typical of beach sand.

zone 10b with white sand - yeah I tried sweet potaoes and had a really hard time keeping them watered over our early summer 98 deg and burning sun, so the plants really struggled. this year trying again in a sand plot but with a layer of home-made mulch from shredded palm leaves and it's working better for me, holding the moisture a bit more and not going hydophobic. Also resigned to watering a lot more - next time going with drip irrigation. Last year I could not keep the plants hydrated so they did not produce that much and had lots of soil pest damage so a lot of tubers were poor quality. Hopefully a harvest this year!

I live in zone 10B and my soil is basically beach sand, much lighter than this video. I had a lot of extra onion plants and had started a new plot unamended for later use after cover cropping, but decided to try all the extra onions in the raw sand. I added alot of chicken manuer fertilizer and to my shock the bed performed equally top my raised beds growing the same variety. I had nearly identical yields from a bare sand plot as with a 3 year old raised bed with lots of compost. I tried sweet potatoes in sand and it was really tough to keep them watered enoughm so the plants did not doo that great, but the onions grew like crazy with plenty of organic ferts over the winter.
