  • I cover the Botvinnik system in the English opening, a setup with a solid pawn formation in the center that allows for attacks on either wing. An example game in the Botvinnik system is Botvinnik vs. Sherbakov: • The Botvinnik system i...
    I also played an anti-Botvinnik system in one of my over the board games: • Chess postmortem #12: ...

    I tried to play the Botvinnik System on many occasions, but Black can easily keep White from achieving the setup. By playing ...d5 early for example, which many players do.

      Yes, but d5 is kind of a questionable move though because white can take, then if queen takes, Nc3 and white can enjoy a slight advantage.

    Thank you, man! I got a tournament tomorrow and I couldn't find a vid that would explain how you should attack once you get to the Botvinnik position. Keep up the work

    Good video. I love opening w/c4. I'm the only person I know who plays the English. Everyone I've faced for the last 5 years plays e4 or d4.

      My personal trainer coach from 5-6 years ago played it, but now he’s moved along to other things in life, and now here I am starting to study this opening more often.

    Thanks Jim, not much on the Botvinnik from the usual sources, so this helped a lot.

    Hi Jim. I just subed & liked. I also am a student of this formation = The Botvinnik English. It is very difficult to know what are the best moves & when to play them - also piece placement. Tony Koston (sp?) has a small book on most of these variations. Other books seem to show more aggressive lines where you will either attack queenside or later open with d4 as you have stated. It is not such an easy opening as you do have to play against reverse Sicilians w/ colors reversed & an extra move. I look forward to other variations. Thanks. Sincerely, James.

    Good stuff. Much respect for this system. So much so that as black I avoid it via 1. e6. 2. d5

    this is a great side weapon to have but cant be anyone's main opening. too many ways to neutralise.

    From 13:31 wouldn't white still be able to form a Botvinnik triangle? After bxc3, he could still play c4, e4, d3 & form the triangle.

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  4 года назад

      Yes, that is true, but it would be a bit slow, and no problem for black. A more natural plan for white in this position is aim for d4 and e4.

  • @rydersonthestorm7175
    @rydersonthestorm7175 7 лет назад +1

    Why is it logical to block the diagonal of your fianchetto bishop? Is it more to just set up future revealed attacks? As black, wouldn't you presume to keep E4 pawn in its way? I've only been playing for 3 months, sorry if it's a poor question. I really like the English but I don't understand this variation.

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  7 лет назад +3

      It's more of a long term plan. If black blocks with e5, or with a piece on e5, then your idea is to break with f4 at some point to open things up. If black doesn't play e5, then you can always play e5 yourself to open up the diagonal. If black manages to keep a pawn on e5, even after you play f4, then the bishop may have to maneuver to another diagonal.
      It can take some time to get used to this setup, but I've had good luck with it. Keep in mind that there are also ideas to break on the queenside with b4.

    At 11:55, why would you take with the d-pawn? Is it bad to take with the b-pawn?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  2 года назад

      You can take with the b-pawn and avoid trades, but black is fine after Nc6, which prevents d4.

    Can you play Botvinnik system against all black replies to c4?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  5 лет назад +1

      Not really. If black plays with e6 and d5 it is pointless to try to go for the Botvinnik triangle, because the center pawns just get exchanged off. Also, if black plays Bc5, it's probably better for white to go with e3 to blunt the bishop rather than the e4 of the Botvinnik setup.

      @@JimsChessChannel So only when Black fianchetto his bishop?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  5 лет назад +1

      @@playerx-s4v No, the Botvinnik setup is possible against most black replies. For example if black plays e5 and Be7 or Bb4, then white can get to the Botvinnik setup. You can even play it against Bc5, but I don't think it is as good in that case.

    • @playerx-s4v

      @@JimsChessChannel Ok, thank you. Do you think Botvinnik system is better than let's say d3 and a3 in English opening?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  5 лет назад +1

      No, I think they are about the same. I like the Botvinnik system because it is a bit out of style at the moment, and it leads to distinctive and interesting position types, that I might be more familiar with than my opponent.

      I cover the London System here: ruclips.net/video/BaWIMyjwfRo/видео.html
      It's a good opening, often recommended to players who want to avoid more theoretical openings, very solid for white, but with some attacking chances. It is still played in top level games.

    I have a question....can the queens bishop not go to e3 to stop blacks knight to go to d4?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  6 лет назад

      Yes, and putting the bishop on e3 is often what white does. Still, d4 is a weakness is this structure, and if you have to watch over that square with a piece, it keeps that piece from doing other jobs.
