The series was canceled by NBC at the request of Dick Ebersol as part of a deal for him to take over the then-ailing Saturday Night Live. Because there was no time for NBC to develop a new show from scratch in light of the urgent SNL situation, The Midnight Special was replaced by SCTV, a weekly Canadian sketch comedy series performed by members of the Toronto satellite of Chicago's The Second City improvisational troupe. That program, in turn, would later be replaced with another music show, Friday Night Videos, in 1983, also produced initially by Ebersol.

    Prince
    Dez Dickerson
    Andre Cymone
    Gayle Chapman
    Matt Fink
    Bobby Z
Few at that time could see Prince landing a solid foothold in the music business.
But NO ONE could anticpate him becoming the international global icon and influential music power that he would become.
Forver indelibly eitched into pop music consciousness to the extent that he changed the look and sound of music moving forward.

And it would be Lisa Coleman who introduced her good close childhood friend Wendy Melvoin to Prince. And the rest is history.

First time I saw Prince he was opening for The Rolling Stones concert LA Coliseum 1981. He had performed the day before and the crowd threw stuff at him on stage. He reportedly talk to Jagger who said hey I thought you wanted to be a rock star, you gonna quit after that? So Prince appeared at the show the next day and we saw him in a purple frock coat and Victorian blouse, people weren’t ready for him. They wanted to see the Stones. He was so talented, way before his time. Prince became very jaded and often cynical as he got older. I still marvel about the elevator and his song just like George Michael dying on Christmas.
