Hi, my name’s Maya I’m 13 years old and I really want to go to Harvard University. This video helped me a lot so I can plan early and find activities I’m interested in such as volunteering and extracurricular activities and more. Thanks for sharing this advice! 🤍
i started my own version of a “brag journal” for my junior year, and i wished i has done it for the other years. i was applying for something, and one of the prompts was how i’ve challenged myself to interact with people of different backgrounds. i completely forgot to mention that i hosted a moroccan exchange student. 😐 underclassmen: please make journal lmao
omg same!! I struggled with finding extracurriculars as well, but if you're looking for any online clubs that also give you volunteer hours i would def suggest YCAT (Youth Climate Action Team) & TTT (Teens Teach Technology). they're both online, they both count as extracurriculars and clubs & they give you volunteer hours!! hope that helps
You seem like a wonderful person but also... this video wigs me out :D I’m German and I don’t know why I’m watching this as I already finished Uni, but even here we have „ivy“ equivalents for different fields. I work in vfx and was looking for schools in Germany to do a film masters in production design; here we have two „ivy“ film schools. I actually got in, and longevity is about the only thing I’ve got to show, and teaching in Indonesia for 3 months... the latter being completely irrelevant in my application. It’s all about your showreel/portfolio with work & specific entrance exams the Unis do. You seem like an off the walls compassionate, motivated and kind not to mention crazy smart person, but the things these schools expect are.... crazy. Absolutely crazy. I can’t say I think it’s a good thing. You basically have to cure cancer by 17, spend every summer doing camp stuff, and start worrying about extra curricular activities at 12?? I mean you don’t have to, it’s not all about ivies, but still. :D congrats though, I have no words to tell you how much respect I have for you!:) Harvard must be your dream come true
ahh I'm so sorry but I'm not an international student so I really can't give an accurate picture since that wasn't my experience😭 I would definitely recommend doing your research on a variety of American schools (state schools, ivies, liberal arts colleges) and also watching videos like these and taking the information that's helpful💕
building a better me! hi Kristian, thanks so much for this video - very helpful! I was just wondering if you could do a room/study space/desk tour video? I currently trying to reorganise my space for maximum productivity, so it’d be nice to see what that looks like for you as someone who is achieving so well! Hope you’re doing well! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi, thanks for the idea! To be completely honest, I'm still working on how to maximize my productivity/improve my time management skills myself😂 but I can totally make a video about some things that are helping me and who knows maybe we can become more organized together😭❤️
Do you think that learning languages and taking community college courses are good attributes for applications? I am learning Spanish, German, and improving my fluency in Russian. I have also applied to my local community college for this summer as a Spanish major, and am waiting for my student ID. I’m a freshman and I haven’t really done anything this year to add to my resume, so I’m trying to get an idea of what I could do for my sophomore year to make up for this past year. I’m planning on joining robotics club as a start. Thank you for this video it was super helpful!!
Hi Eva, all of that sounds amazing! There are truly no limits to what you can do as an "activity" and learning new languages can always only be seen as an advantage. Wishing you all the best✨
Omg thank you so much!! I have sooo many ECs and they all mean a lot to me so I want to put them all on my application but I didn’t know how to group them if that makes sense, this was so helpful💓 (Northwestern is my top school)
When you said that you knew what you wanted to do since you were 11 I was like ME TOO! My dream is to go to Harvard and be pre Med. And am excited to work hard to achieve my goal. Keep doing you! And also do you have any tips for freshman year? Any good study habits or tricks to help get in ? Thank you for being an inspiration. I love you and your content that you create to help other.
Hey, thank you so much for your kind words! It's great that you've set goals for yourself and are ready to work hard to see them come to fruition. I can definitely make a video specifically for freshman💕
I’m curious about ways to start something of my own related to medicine and interventional radiology in particular? Also, as an African American rising Sophomore, could you let me know about programs that adhere to that or any opportunities you are aware of? Thank you so much for your videos, they truly are a big help and inspire me to do better.
I’m a rising freshman at an IB school and idk what to do for EC’s I’m super frustrated since I want to go to Harvard, CMU, MIT, or Stanford for undergrad and major in CS, but I know it’ll be extremely hard 😞
Few months late but I’d say try anything that seems interesting so you can stick with it during softmore-senior or you could maybe get into it junior year. I did band since freshman but at junior year I also learned how to swim and joined the swim team and put that on my application. Anything that seems you might like I’d say go for don’t be shy and if you really don’t want to be an extracurricular person then you can stick with good grades and a lot of community service
@@jessicac8090ik this was 3 years ago but i dont think you can just stick with community service 😭 im like 100% sure that you need to have atleast a couple ECs
hi kristian! thank u for another amazing college video. just curious, how did yk which colleges you wanted to apply to, more specifically which ivies out of the 8?
Um can I start doing clubs and extracurricular activities in 10th grade instead of 9th. Last year 9th grade we were all in quarantine so I couldn’t start clubs or extracurricular activities. In fact my school DID have a debate club but they ended after Covid started appearing. My school is a Arts and Performing Arts so only a few students are in it. It’s a small school basically. We aren’t well funded as well. So they don’t offer many Ap classes or extracurricular activities. Thank you for the video. I’m starting now in 10th grade to study on things I’m behind and look at clubs and extracurricular activities I can do now.
Hey there, thank you for watching!! YES you can start activities in 10th grade. The pandemic has shifted the college admissions landscape, and admissions officers are more aware of how major life events (like hs during quarantine) can impact your applications. You are ahead of the curve when it comes to college prep and despite your school's resources, there is still plenty of time to find ways to become involved, whether through a school club or a project you start yourself. I'm rooting for you!!🤍
Do you think service hours are a must for colleges?? I am part of a club that donates things to hospitals but Idk it that counts as service “hours.” Since it isnt really timed??
Hi Ashley! (disclaimer: i am not an admissions officer) Nothing on the college application is truly a *must* other than the required components each college specifies. It's important for all humans to be involved in their communities and the hospital donations sound like a great example of that, so I wouldn't sweat not having a specified amount of "hours."🤍
I'm a freshman and I don't even know where to start for my extracurriculars. idk if they'll be anything I can get involved in as a freshman, especially because of my age since I'm 14
Heyo! I’m in middle school and I really want to do more so that I can get into the schools that I want (I’m looking at a fine arts school in Britain, I am already in a fine arts charter school) and I already have a .5 college credit and I’m in Pre-Algebra (a year ahead from my peers so at senior year I’m taking college level math) and I’m trying to volunteer more. Is there anything else you’d recommend for me to do? I really want to be prepared like you are :)
Hi, this was very helpful thanks! I'm trying to start a nonprofit/ big service project at my school so if you have someone who has experience or can help me in general I can connect with I'd love that. Still thanks
I was wondering if you were a valedictorian or salutatorian because I’m trying to be one at my school but I absolutely hate English but I’m on track to be one if I keep taking the advanced English classes but it stops me from taking classes I want to take like art. Also I want to be a archaeologist or anthropologist so English isn’t going to be a huge part of my degree so I was wondering your opinion on it. Also your video was really helpful and got me thinking on a great project for my school!!!
Hi I'm going into my sophomore year and I don't have anyone to look to for highschool advice so it would mean a lot if you or anyone else could help. I am a first generation Asian-American, my family is in the low class and my parents can't give me a ride to attend extracurriculars (clubs) at my school. Because of this, I ended up dropping out of most of the clubs I joined my freshman year since I couldn't attend them. None of my friends are interested in the clubs I want to do either so I can't ride with them. Do you know how I can do extracurriculars without having a ride? I can't drive until my junior year either so I'm really worried I won't be able to do the extracurriculars that I want to do :( It really sucks because it's my dream to go to an Ivy League school, but it's difficult when I'm competing with other students who are much more well-rounded than I am.
i started highschool two weeks ago and im freaking out bc i get good grades but everyone around me is doing all these crazy things and i dont know where to start and how to go about it,, and im panickingggg,, esp cos i want to go in the direction of pursuing smth in human rights and most people say im too young for that im spiralling sorry
Hey, stop freaking out because you’re doing an amazing job already! It’s super easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing but the really cool thing about being human is that there is literally no one else like you. Maybe you could start a blog or research project on a human rights topic that’s interesting or special to you? Remember to breathe and you’ll be just fine❤️
Hi, so I’m already a junior and I haven’t really done any ec’s in high school, and the ones I did do have nothing to do with what I’m looking to major in. Do you have any advice on what I can do?
I don't know all of the details for your specific situation but I would recommend working with what you have and also get creative this summer! Expand upon a hobby that you've always had or learn a new skill. You still have those two months before senior year starts so don't waste them☺️
hi Kristian! thank you so much for these videos. I'm an international student and have been looking for these types of opportunities for ages but the language barrier and the culture in Switzerland (where I live) makes it incredibly hard. I know you don't have experience in this area, but I was wondering if you had any advice for me, possibly with online activities :)
Hi Ana, thank you for watching! Right now a lot of things are online or remote due to COVID-19 so I would use that to aid in your search. The great thing about a lot of schools' application processes is that they are "holistic" which means your application should be representative of every part of you. As an international student, you will only be evaluated based off of how well you did with the resources you had, so no worries if the opportunities in your area are different from mine or anyone else with activities videos! Hope this helps💖
My school doesn't have any extracurricular activities nor clubs, but I am planning to open the photography club next year. Do you think it will be worth it?
You should become an online college consultant, as a side hustle because you give great advice!
