- In this video, Dr Sanjay Gupta, explores the reasons why gastric reflux, indigestion or a hiatus hernia can increase the frequency of palpitations. My name is Sanjay Gupta, I am a cardiologist in York and my website is www.yorkcardiology.co.uk
I LOVE YOU! Nobody ever believed me when I said there was a relation between acid reflux and skipped heartbeats
Yes, I feel like I'm going crazy. No one believes me either
Cheers for the Video! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you considered - Saayeahorn Inconceivable Secret (should be on google have a look)? Well I've literally after 2 years gastro docs been finally diagnosed on RUclips. What a world we live in. Thank you so much Sanjay.
You are a gift! You have no idea how your calm manner and knowledge base are helping people which increases their quality of life.
Diagnosed with PAC 2-1/2 years ago and GERD 15 years ago. I suspected my reflux was exacerbating my palpitations-live with them every day 24/7 and am awakened by them. You validated I am not crazy. They are debilitating to my quality of life. I told my partner that bowel movements triggered more palpitations and the article you referenced (I literally found and read minutes before finding your video) are absolutely can be related when these conditions coexist. This video has completely changed my perspective and validated all of what I know to be true as my PAC relates to my GERD. Thank you Dr Gupta.
Where did you find the article?
Kudos to you for highlighting the link between gastric/digestive issues and palpitations. Thank you.
I felt palpitations for months before talking to my Dr, who quickly said it was anxiety--but I don't suffer from anxiety! I have suffered from GERD and Barrett's Disease for years and am trying to get off meds and take care of it naturally. This video helped me understand how the two are connected! THANK YOU!
Me too - have you had any luck? I would so want to stop taking PPIs!!!
How are u doing now?
Thank you for posting this video. When I was hospitalized for my palpitations, I kept telling everyone that I also was having indigestion, frequent belching and heartburn. Everyone told me that has no association with the cardiac ectopy (and I should know this as I'm an ICU RN). I knew that it didnt make sense but it felt like it couldn't be a coincidence...My metoprolol helps the ectopy a lot, however, I notice when my GERD flairs up, so do my ectopic beats. Here I am today with a GERD flare that started last night, and what do you know....my ectopy has increased....I have been searching for a relationship between these and there is not much out there, but I KNOW there has to be one. I really appreciate your video and hope you continue to educate the medical community about this relationship. Thank you!

@@rickysingh1209 Hello bro how are you ?
You can tell when someone is honest, caring, and genuine and this doc is that for sure……Thank you for the great work you do.
I literally do not have sufficient words to express my appreciation & gratitude for how aptly you breakdown these issues in your videos into a form of information that is easily digestible & understood. When I went to my cardiologist he checked me out comprehensively, said I was fine & "try not to worry about it". But as I said to him, "I came in with palpitations, I've been checked out & all is good, but I am now leaving with those same palpitations" with no information or prognosis for the near future regarding them. You are the only one who has seen past the heart checks & understands the fear & stress ectopics cause on an everyday basis. I hope your holistic view of how ectopics affects both physically & mentally the health of those that suffer from it will in time be taken on board by cardiologists as a matter of course.
Thank you. Had anxiety, caffeine withdrawal and gerd. Was having heart palpitations. Some were scary. Thank you for showing this! Jesus bless! People worry about this a lot. Cause it seems something is wrong with the heart. But isn't!

Any updates? Something helped your gerd or palpitation?
@@YorkCardiologyhi sir
If a person has only GERD and not a hiatus hernia. Can he go for fundoplication?
Dear sir,
I had this gerd induced palpitations and visited cardiologist and gastroenterologist, two years back. Both of them refused to accept the relation between them. But, you got the point. As you mentioned when i treat the gerd, there is absence of heart palpitations. I was a serious workout guy, because of this gerd induced palpitations, i turned towards yoga which helps to some extent to minimise my gerd. But, i would like to share what i experience. Whenever, i receive gerd induced irritations, i feel kind of block in my throat, inturn reduces my oxygen intake through my wind pipes. As i am taking reduced oxygen intake to my lungs, it triggers heart as both are interconnected. It was my understanding. Still, living with the problem and managing. You are first one presenting this relationship between gerd and heart palpitations. So, i was so excited to share my experience. Thanks a lot
Same with me
What are the medicine to take. I have same

Same here, I already have PVCs, but the reflux increases them.
Anxiety does makes you get GERD or gastritis because of the stress but once you get acid issues you become anxious again. is a cycle but manage your stress then manage your anxiety then manage your acid issues. i guess

They are really disconcerting when they happen and Dr. Gupta's videos are so informative and helpful. I love the way Dr. Gupta looks at the person as a whole along with how lifestyle changes can help rather than just treating the symptoms.

Thanks Doc! I have had these Afib attacks my whole life, when I was in my 20’s I ended up in the hospital after a night of drinking alcohol because the afib happened and lasted for over 12 hrs. As I got older I realized during high anxiety times and also when having reflux it would happen instantly. Another time it happens is when I’ve over indulged or when laying on my side in bed, i know if I’m not properly hydrated it’s more likely to occur also, that being said if I chug a bottle of water it helps them go away. I believe you’re spot on with your 3 different scenarios and I believe if you have this disorder all 3 of them will cause it, at least with me they do. This was great info, Thanks for clearing things up for me!
Hi how do you treat your afib can you please give me some help thanks
Do or did you get chest or sternum pain as well?
thank you, how old are you now?
What I found works well for me is supplementing with digestive enzymes and keeping hydrated, I’ve had these brief afib episodes happening since I was 12 yo. I read an article once that mentioned low blood volume may contribute to this disorder, I believe dehydration can cause low blood volume and may also cause arrhythmias.

I’m one of those people suffering with this condition. My gastritis has gotten worse when I have small amounts of food in my stomach then I smoke. It causes fatigue, heart palpitations, anxiety, anxious, confusion, depression. To the point I’m about to past out. It’s been a long time I got it confused for low blood sugar. But it’s not. Thank you for making this video. It definitely helped me and it will help others.
Thank you so much for your video. I've noticed that everything you said is exactly the case for me. Thank you, I feel like you are truly a lifesaver.
This is absolutely true!! I was born with congenital heart defect, TOF, have had 5 repair surgeries over my lifetime beginning in 1964, the last being this year at age 62, for this. I have had PVCs and arrhythmia all of my life. I had an ablation at one point and that helped. I am now on 50 mg metoprolol daily. I still have PVCs but not nearly as bad after my last surgical repair but now when I get them, I notice it is after I eat, when my stomach is bloated. I take 2 Rolaids and within MINUTES, the bloating is gone AS WELL AS the palpitations and I feel 100% back to normal. This is a miracle for me. Unfortunately, all my Adult Congenital Heart Defect specialists, including electrophysiologists NEVER mentioned this. THANK YOU, Dr. Gupta, for confirming this connection.
Thank you for posting this series. I have dealt with Afib and had an ablation procedure. I still suffer from PVC's, PAC's, and SVT's. I notice that when the irregular rhythm begins I am belching a lot. Sometimes, I get this acidic aftertaste. My cardiologist and electrophysiologist treat this with beta blockers, etc. No real help.
My internist prescribed 40 mg. of Prilosec for possible GERD. After three weeks of this treatment, my episodes have been reduced significantly and the episodes are mildly bothersome compared to what I was experiencing. I will continue the PPI treatment for a couple of months but finally feel hopeful about this condition.

Thank you so much doctor!! This is such a relief for me, I've been suffering from palpitations for years and it triggers my anxiety most of the time that leads to panic attacks and more more more palpitations to the extent that I thought I am having a heart attack or heart disease. I always experience acid reflux before but I don't take it seriously, not until now that I gave birth, It became worse as well as my palpitations. My husband doesn't believe me, he thought my abnormal heartbeats are cause by anxiety and just force me to calm down and not think of it. Thank you for this info! It enlightened me. 💕

Very interesting and helpful, thank you for taking the time to spread the news, instead of sleeping.
I have the entire suite of heart and stomach related issues described here. PVCs, PACs, hiatal hernia and GERD. Much of my research is conclusive to what Dr. Gupta is saying here. I have had the entire battery of cardiac testing confirming the heart arithmia and mild mitral valve dis-function but also concluding no major problem. I have been using exercises designed to retract the stomach back into the sub diaphanous cavity with some success. There are several RUclips videos on that subject. I have also been trying to ween off from the pro tonics but after viewing this I may have to re-evaluate the wisdom of that.

Bessie A hi Bessie how are you going now?
worrying about the palpitations really increases its sensation. With practise, i have learned to "let go", after which the palpitations seem to disappear. Just focusing on something else seems to get rid of the palpitations, like working, any DIY project, watching a movie, etc. Any activity that takes the focus away from the palpitations.
jonathan thanks for the wonderful suggestions John. I get about 7000 ectopic beats (PVC’s) in 24hours and drives me mental especially as some give me a butterfly feeling in chest and make me so miserable and anxious at times. I’m going to try and let go as you suggest and focus on other things like meditation when particularly bad, movies, work etc. I think I have GERD which I’m working hard to get rid of with PPI for 1 month. The skipped heart beats are the worse stress for me. So thank you so much for your excellent suggestions

Hey John,
I feel the exact same way just recently. Even though I'm not showing my anxiety, I have a tendency to feel it hence why I'm having these heart palpitations. I don't wanna think it's a heart attack, but my friend told me that there's no way I would almost have it cuz if you get it, it happens all of a sudden. He told me I most likely have acid reflux, and after watching this video, I feel somewhat relieved. I may be anxious right now just thinking about this and some negative things about what may happen to me if I see a doctor and that the doctor tells me something else that could be worse, and that's probably why I'm having these palpitations right now.
Their so scary though lol it makes me panic all the time it’s all in my belly
I am pregnant and suffering from both heart arrhythmias and acid reflux. This video makes so much sense!
Thank you for this. I have been having palpitations and "flutters" for a few weeks now. They have coincided with stress and a terrible round of acid reflux. I also have a hiatal hernia. I have noticed a link between the issues. The worse my reflux gets, the more I notice my heart. I also had a miscarriage in March, and I feel that this event could be adding to the palpitations. It all started after that happened. Anyway, I have been extremely anxious about my palpitations, but I have an appointment to see my doctor in a week. Your video has helped me to relax a bit in the meantime. Worrying only makes it so much worse.

Dr Sanjay Gupta,
Thank you so much for your informative videos surrounding heart palpitations. For me personally, this had been going for quite a while, and as you have mentioned in your videos unfortunately a traditional doctor will typically not shed light upon the actual causes on an individual case by case basis. The ECG will however identify problems with the heart itself. For those with acid reflux/gastrointestinal disruptions causing heart palpitations, I would suggest checking out Kevin Trudeau's Natural Cures, and looking up acid reflux. This will tell you what you need to do.

😲for years I have been suffering with reflux hiatus hernia, numerous times Iv had bloating a churning in the stomach with cramps and then my heart is racing feeling hot and shaky till this April when they said I had a heart attack. 🙄I wish doctors would listen to the patients as they recall their symptoms from a week or a month ago because that would give them an idea of what the cause could have been or how it has got worse. My docs fobbed me off when kept going with the same symptoms and generally feeling unwell, my docs kept telling me it’s anxiety, but I kept telling them “yes it is because every time it happens I get anxious not anxious before I feel unwell” doc you are amazing you have literally spoken about everything that was going on in my little head because I have complained to my GP as I feel like I my symptoms were ignored based on blood test result being normal. But here I am 51 with a stent and on heaps of meds. I love watching ur videos and I wish some of those doctors would watch and learn so they can help patients and not make them feel isolated and helpless. 👍🏼great stuff
Dr. Gupta, Thank you for this video. I have had gastro esophagus reflux and a hiatal hernia for 35 years. Had the hernia repaired 30 years ago to only small success. I had a wonderful gastroenterologist who taught me to control my relux with medication and diet. However, I would have PACs which 30 years ago, Doctors insisted were heart related. I, in fact, agrued with my Doctor that I believed that the PACs were related to the Vagus nerve because they were frequent when my acid reflux would flare. Sure enough, I have had many heart related tests to find that there is no heart disease.
PACs are; however, frightening. If a patient is experiencing these and takes acid reducing medication and the PACs subside, they can be somewhat certain that it is not a heart problem. I have found that Gaviscon and other over the counter medications also help for quick relief of PACs. You are also correct that high inflation markers in the blood are found with those of us with acid reflux. It becomes a balancing act of life style,
It is my view that those of us with this condition should get their hearts checked from time to time when symptoms are severe for peace of mind. Peace of mind is also important to live with the condition.
I want to thank you for your research.
I literally came to think that my heart was ill until a gifted Dr like you discovered that my suffering from reflux is the main cause of my heart irregular beats thus I treated my reflux and a good diet when finally I am cured of the cardiac problem thank you for this informative video
also doctor u are amazing wish I had known about u a long time ago u have so.put my mind at rest your totally wonderful x
Thanks Yvonne. I look forward to chatting with you this week
@@YorkCardiology sir can I get your WhatsApp number plz reply sir.
Really thanks a lot ,lot and lot for explaining. The worst part is no one accepted the problem, neither cardiologist nor gastro Drs, they told you are going through anxiety, dipression etc. Come on man , i have good life. Finally i started self analysis and start observing my problem for months, i understood root cause is GERD and acid. Believe me your video boost my confidence level 💪.Really i was confused and stressed same time because no one was understanding my problems, its feel like going to die, its that much sharp sensation while heat beat skipping. Any way, i have completed my phd on google search and finally i got my answer. Whoever feeling same issue, believe yourself and speak yoursled nothing will happen. Anyways consult with Doctor and explain them, everyone not same. Thank you Dr ❤.
SPOT ON Dr. Gupta! Exactly what I’ve been dealing with for decades. At times when my digestion system is messed up triggering a ton of PACs and occasional AFibs, a month of taking Omeprazole calms my gastric issues and drastically reduces my ectopic symptoms. It is not a cure but treats both my gastric episodes and annoying arrhythmias.
Is your heart working normally now?
@@King-uh7ll Very few episodes these days however I'm watching my diet as well staying away from spicy and greasy foods. Been doing the Mediterranean diet for 3 months and lost 20 pounds.
I have all these issues. Just today my heart started flip flopping and then all of a sudden went into tachycardia. I was bloated and allot of gas activity. I'm no stranger to this though, as things like this have happend to me before. Sometimes Ectopic beats can last for a while, other times it goes away. I use to take Protonix, but was advised to stop taking it as I guess there's a new study that PPI's are not safe. I also have sleep apnea as well. So speeding up, slowing down, flip flopping, I've been there before. It's unnerving. I'm going to sub because this is definitely an issue I've been having for a long time.
Hi I've done all the cardiovascular test including a Holter and still the Dr says it's absolutely perfect yet I continue to have the skips and flutters..I am so scared to walk cause normally my comfort zone is lying down now cause it gets worst when I walk around or move..Strange yet I've seen many top Cardiovascular doctors and all said Anxiety dehydration etc.
Great series of videos, I have the HH and palpitations and I have always noticed the link between my stomach and the Palpitations.
And sinuses! Postnasil drip!and hard to breathe!
Yep. I have all of that as well.

This video has answered so many of my own questions!! Thank you for this useful information!
Thank you Dr! Wonderful video.. Appreciate your bedside manner..Wish there were more Drs like you
None of my doctors ever heard of rhoemheld syndrome and just say everything is anxiety even though I KNOW that the anxiety doesn’t come until after I get the extreme reflux and heart symptoms.
Same here mines started out of the blue ..my symptoms..first indigestion /nausea followed by heart racing and papiltations that lead to me having an anxiety attack

@@mekathotisanthipriya3213 hey we talked to you I became the second endoscopy. When he thought he had gastritis, the acid came to reflux. When I used gaviscon, I noticed when palpitations subsided Did you use gaviscon?
I recently had severe Rhoemheld's gastrocardiac syndrome. Worst palpitations and chest pain of my life, lack of sleep, GERD and bloating. I then went on a zero FODMAP diet, and the issues cleared up in just a few days. Please do yourself a favor and google low FODMAP diets. This will get rid of your bloating and will probably get rid of the GERD and the palpitations/chest pain as well. It can be a bit tough to follow but it is like a miracle.
@@maninatreeproductions9588 sir plz tell me what is a fodmap diet.i can search in Google bt I'm literally confused which food to ate and which food to avoid.plz sir let's explain me I'm having same problem with7 months.
Thank you for this video, drs these days just dont care or really are not professionals in the field anymore. Its sad and frustrating.
My Gastroenterologist told me he knows for a fact that GERD can and does cause palpitations.
Thank you Dr Gupta for sharing your knowledge and acting on behalf of patients
I wish you were an Endro also! So helpful...thank you!
Sooooo helpful! Doctors are not taking it seriously. Thank you
Thank you sir! I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge. I wish I could meet in your office someday. You’re a good man..
Hello, doctor! Thanks for the very helpful pieces of information. I was just wondering: is it possible for excess gas in the stomach and intestines to be felt in the chest area and mistaken for extra beats or flutters?
Benjamin P, same here. Feels like the bloating and trapped air escaping through the esophagus are palpitations. Scary.
same feeling it's so scary
Do you have chest discomfort?
Hi from Malaysia. Thanks very very much for this. It certainly helps incredibly a lot! Very well explained.
Thank you so much for this Dr Gupta. Suffering from this currently, and until now it has been confusing. Will certainly help with the discussion with my Dr. Hope to find more from you.
You have mentioned that stimulating the vagus nerve slows down the heart and that in turn increases the ectopics, then why do cardiologists prescribe beta blockers to slow the heart down in cases of ectopics
jeetendra kumar bets blockers block the release of adrenaline. Being on beta blockers won’t stop palipitations from stomach issues from my experience, but it DEFINITELY stops them due to extra adrenaline in the body from being stressed/anxious. And if you are getting ectopics while on beta blockers they are way less intense than normal.
This really sheded light on my feeling right now
There is definitely correlation between the two diseases. I have GERD due to Hashimoto's and my heart is always affected by inflammation in the stomach and oesophagus. All tests have proven I have no heart disease but the GERD is the cause of my arythmias. For me diet and avoiding dairy especially helps al lot.
thank you so much Sanjay for all your passion and effort to help us
May our good Lord bless you for discussing very impt topics like this . This certainly helps many coz this is very
Since getting a strange stomach illness I have had both acid reflux WITH heart palpitations - they come and go...if digestion gets worse, sure enough, the palps start (I notice them before the reflux but they come hand in hand). I have noticed that the reflux seems related to "indigestion" which consists simply of the feeling of bubbles of air in my oesophagus, or more likely, directly following eating. Sometimes, after a single piece of chocolate (ugh! why couldn't it have been Brussel sprouts!) it feels like my stomach itself spasms (or lower oesophagus?) which then periodically starts the heart palpitations. EVERY doctor pretty much called me bonkers asking if it was related to my stomach, but a couple of weeks of a H2 blocker settles it right down. If H2 blockers help, why isn't it related somehow to reflux? Thank you for this video!
Fantastic Doctor thank you for your super explanation. My husband has palpitations. We never thought about the connection.
We have subscribed from Sydney, Australia.💓
Just one problem if you have heart palpitations chest pain and acid reflux the doctors and hospitals will say that you have anxiety it's quite sickening to hear the word anxiety when you're suffering from palpitations and chest pain
Same here, sick and tired of hearing 'anxiety'
Unfortunately I’m one of y’all here. I woke up few minutes ago can’t sleep. I lost my dad too so everything is making me feel more scared about my life. I’m totally grateful to watch this video. I don’t know how I manage to get here but I know God or an Angel directed me. God bless you Doc Gupta. I can rest now so far I know I won’t die. But I’ll share my own experiences. I have had to sim stones, had GERD disease a chronic one that make my mouth smell and make me belch and odour from my mouth, I find it difficult swallowing, my lips get dried up and I feel thirsty most times, the worst of all is like something stuck in my throat that won’t go down, 😢. I bought promto inhibitors from counter and I took them like 2 times of treatment before I started using natural fruits like vegetables mint leaf, bananas, cucumber 🥒, melon 🍉, and oatmeal 🥣. It reduces it down but the palpitations is still making me feel worried befor I jumped on this video. I can’t still feels like I’m going to choke and it’s quiet painful and it squeezes my heart. Omg ! God have mercy! Hope it gets better soon. I don’t want to keep taking medicines cos it comes with chemicals and it might have after effects to my health. God help us all. 😢
Doc im having same acid reflux and palpitations.... This cardiologist doctor cured me and gave me peace of mind everything he said on his videos im having experience. My questions is why ER doctor doesnt know this even im telling them im having acid reflux... They keep saying my Atrial Fibrilation has no connections in my acid reflux?? Thank you for the videos its very helpful.
thank you so much doctor for this information...i have that reflux and palpitaion... my doctor gave me lanzoprazole for 2 months... but it keeps on coming back... all ecg ekg echo are normal... i still have the palpitation & gerd but i treat myself by taking 2 yogurt a day one in the morning and one in the evening...taking probiotic pills before i eat and it help a little... i still have palpitaion & reflux but not worst like before....
+angel cruz it may be worth watching the PPI video i have done angel
Do you exercise a lot ? Stress ?
It’s good seeing these comments to make me feel like I’m not crazy !! You guys aren’t alone!!
I believe everything your saying. Ive mentioned it to my doctor about stomach related pulpitations but they just dont consider it. My doctors are terrible. They dont give me any time. Basically if my ecg comes back ok then im all good to go home and forget about it. But its impossible to ignore the sensations i get. They are too powerful to ignore
Sorry Dr. But you are the cutest Dr I have seen .
You’re the best, Dr Gupta!!
I have said right along, that I feel when my stomach is very bloated, I've had more palpitations, from the pressure of the stomach on the heart. I have severe acid reflux, am on two meds for acid reflux and still have to sleep with one or two pillows on a wedge to avoid choking. I have been told for many years that my stomach produces great amounts of acid. I've have several gastro tests , and one showed acid reflux and two years later, they tell me it's not acid reflux, it's a nervous stomach. Am I under any stress. Stress is what my family's blood is. LOL We all suffer from anxiety disorders. But even on anxiety meds, and with the reflux meds, it doesn't go away. I've been to the emergency room several times, thinking I was heading towards severe A fib like I had several years ago, and I did have PAC's , but they thought the pain or chest discomfort was from the acid reflux. I was told to take an ant-acid, but how much can you take for acid reflux and still have it. They can affect your magnesium level. I even had severe sinus inflammation with nose bleeds and scabs, caused by a flare up of acid reflux, that caused the acid to back up into my sinuses, from being taken off one of the meds. There were three other patients , ENT said were going through the same thing, it took 6 weeks to heal. Doctors often change diagnoses like changing hats, when everything is still the same. Two doctors say yes, and one stomach specialist says no. It's crazy. I go with my gut, and you've shown me that the reflux does affect my heart, and so does the bloating. I've mentioned this to cardiologists and my pcp in the past and they just sort of shrugged. Not agreeing or disagreeing. Doctors often have trouble committing to an answer, for fear of being wrong I guess. I am going to watch your other videos on acid reflux and heart. My blood pressure can get high at times, I'm on blood pressure meds, to help with that and the irregular heart spells. But recently it has gotten quite low at times. Also my heart rate can go up and stay up for a while, causing dizziness and fatigue, with high blood pressure or with low. Other times my heart rate, just from sitting a while can go quite low. This has been occurring more since being taken off Xanax which worked for years for my chronic anxiety, and I went through hell going off and trying to find something else, and ended up on Klonopin, which my body is still having trouble adjusting to. I'm noticing that when in the ER, doctors mentioning a heart murmur, which hadn't been mentioned since I was 13. Also I get vibrations strongly, in my legs and work through my body and can feel in my chest and arms. They come when I'm sitting. I had leg seizures when first put on the Klonopin, and am wondering if both the murmur and tremors are a result of the medication.
Dude i have the same symptoms as you said but I'm recently diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis I'm 19 and i get all this palpitations along with my disease atleast 10 times in a single night. I want to know whether your eyes feel dry ( difficult to open ) or having difficulty swallowing due to dry mouth when reflux happens .??? And does it feel like your throat and chest is full of phlegm or mucus. Please rply

Hello Doctor. I have enjoyed watching your video's. I suffer from a lot of acid reflux which seems to coincide with my heart palpitations. My doctor has given me medication for this which helps. I'm due to see a cardiologist in October and I am going to mention what you have discussed here. Many thanks.
MrMrdonk you are welcome
Do this cause chest twitching or muscle spasms in the chest?
Lisa Mcguire said it all. You just answered what GP has failed to figure out!!!
