My pappy used to work on muscle cars during the 60s and 70s, and he used to tell me all about em, and said they couldn't sell any of them, because insurance on it in particular, was EXTREMELY high, and sometimes you couldn't even get them insured at all because they were illegal in some places because they were so loud and fast, police couldn't even catch them by a long shot. Sad to know that people couldn't technically enjoy them as much as other muscle cars of the time, but then again, it was a stock car/racecar for the road, and essentially TOO badass. ❤️

When I was a kid a guy who worked at the neighborhood grocery store had one. With a pistol grip shifter. During the summer I would ride my bike up every day at lunchtime, to see if he was eating his lunch in it. He would talk to me every time. He said if you bring your dad up I will give you a ride in it, if he says ok. I'm 54 years old now and will never forget that ride in that Superbird. And that guy was as nice as he could be. ahhhh...no. 1stly, that is a wing. secondly..3 adult men can sit on the horizontal with minor deflection & it'll spring back to original shape, after. the verticals are mounted to the frame, not just tacked onto the trunk sheetmetal, like so many aero devices. this wing is a very strong piece of engineering and metallurgy..just like the rest of the car. Mopar wing cars were aero tested at the Lockheed wind tunnel & cheat the wind very well, despite their size. The Superbird had a drag coefficient of 0.31, while the Dodge Daytona brought that figure down to 0.29. The tiny Prius (2010-15 ediiton) had a CD of .25, so these big cars were doing pretty good.
The race ‘69 Daytona’s and ‘70 superbirds had Hemi’s. The street Daytona’s came standard with 440 mag, single 4 bbl. optional was the hemi. Like the Daytona’s, the street superbirds came standard with 440 mag. Optional was 440 six pack, and the hemi. Petty left Plymouth in’69 and joined ford because of the boss 429. Since by the end of the’69 season, Daytona’s were cleaning up, Plymouth only designed the superbirds to bring petty back to Plymouth, which he did for ‘70. Engine power/ technology was outpacing tire technology, and the cars were getting too fast, tires were blowing. So nascar implemented a new rule to slow the cars down, mandating 7 L engines had to run restrictor plates , but 355 ci engines didn’t, so that killed the 426 Hemi’s and boss 429 engines , as the smaller engines were winning now .
Low 11s is fast for a full body street car. Most of you dissing it have never even driven a 12 second car. And reaction time has nothing to do with e.t. or mph. Time does not start till you break start beam!

(Took his time at the end gettin' off of it too... he was bound and determined to hit 140 even if he ran out of track!) Wonder what the setup is on this thing? Good grief, here we go again with this bullshit about "slow reaction time off the tree". REACTION TIME HAS ABSOLUTELY NO AFFECT ON THE E.T. ..........The damned clock doesn't start until the car breaks the beams at the starting line. The ONLY time "poor reaction time" comes into play, is when you're racing another car in a heads up drag race to determine "which car crosses the finish line first". But even then, it still doesn't affect the E.T. for each driver.

In 1972 a dealer near home had one still held over, had the price down to $2800.00, but no one could afford insurance for it.
