What are biscuits for in woodworking? - Biscuits offer excellent alignment and measurable strength in a woodworking joint. A biscuit joiner makes a matching shaped mortise in the two pieces of wood that are meant to be joined together. A biscuit is a small pre-manufactured piece of wood that goes into the mortise aligning the two boards very closely. In a panel glue up or other long grain to long grain joint, the long grain joint provides much more strength than the biscuit. In that situation, they are intended for alignment purposes only. In a situation where end-grain is involved, they add a significant amount of strength compared to the end-grain to end-grain or end-grain to long or side grain situations. In those situation biscuits are used for strength and alignment. Of course the joints need to be glued!
Why bother with biscuits? - In panel glue-ups or other glue-up situations, the majority of the time you want the boards to be in the same plane as much as possible. This is to maintain the thickness of the panel or glue-up when running the material through the jointer, planer, or drum sander. If the boards are not aligned, you have to remove significant amount of material to get the entire panel or glue-up smooth.
Biscuits are a very affordable way to ensure alignment during a glue up. The equipment is affordable and the biscuits cost are minimal compared to other input costs in your panel, especially when you buy them in bulk. There are other methods and equipment out there to help with alignment. These methods range from simple clamps at each joint to cauls and clamps along the entire panel to expensive patented equipment like the Festool Domino.
We favor biscuits over Dominos for panel glue-ups just due to the flexibility of the biscuits and the time. With a domino, you have to be dead on nuts to your mark when you have it in the tightest setting. A biscuit typically offers you 1/8" lateral movement when using a #20 biscuit.
Makita 18volt Biscuit/Plate Joiner - XJP03Z
We have had many biscuit joiner units that have all be corded. Until the Makita 18volt model, we always had to have an outlet and an extension cord. This wasn't too big of a deal as we were in a workshop but whenever we needed to use the tool, we had to get it setup. The beautiful thing about the Makita 18volt cordless unit is the immediate use. Grab it, slap a battery in it, and get making biscuit slots. It has made the process of biscuits, panel glue-ups, and other simple tasks so much more efficient and enjoyable. It has been a real game changer for us.
If you leave the bag on and just leave it open at the bottom the chips and dust just fall downwards vs spraying.
a biscuit jointer is definitely a handy tool. I also used it for hidden fasteners on composite decking on the outer most board which you order without the groove. If you make a biscuit slot at each joist you can still use the hidden fasteners on the inside of the board. Makes for fewer visible fasteners. #WorkshopAddict
Every cut you showed was into the end of the wood and not into the side of a panel to create an L joint. I was hoping to see how stable the machine is when held vertically to cut down into a side panel. The Lamello Zeta P2 has a side plate for stability. I don't see this being available with the Makita.
That thing looks awesome. Great review👍👍🏼
Nice! Another cordless tool from Makita ! I really need to get busy selling all my corded tools so I can add to my cordless collection !
This is cool but they need to make a brushless version that would be perfect #WorkshopAddict
💥Cmon Makita. Make this BRUSHLESS…!!
I know, I just picked this up, they should make a sub compact version BL
I've been looking at this model a lot. I have a Porter Cable but of course limited by the cord for some applications. Awesome review as always, thanks for posting!! #WorkshopAddict
That is a grinder with a attachment, convince me it’s not
You can do the same thing with a router.
interesting thx fr sharing :)
Looks like an awesome little machine. Thanks. #WorkshopAddict
Is this the same as the Makita biscuit jointer DPJ180Z? Perhaps it's just a different code for different regions?
never used a cordless jointer before this looks pretty nice #workshopaddict
Don’t buy it until they make one brushless
The biscuits seem pretty tight. Do they glue up ok?
Is it me or does this looks like a cordless angle grinder with biscuit/plate joiner attached to it? #WorkshopAddict
I compared them side by side, and think that's exactly what Makita did.
John Chung not a bad thing. There cordless grinders are good. Also tried and true and gremlins are figured out.
TheMelbournelad yep, no sense reinventing the wheel.
I thought the exact same thing, then I had the idea of purchasing the biscuit cutter head assembly and using one of my seldom used brushed Makita grinder motors to maybe save a few dollars. I found out that the motor/electronics housing is the same, however from the motor output shaft onward everything is different. The pinion gear is a different size to achieve a different RPM and at that point I lost interest.
That'd be a pretty useful tool #WorkshopAddict
I thought I might buy one of these units until this review. Apparently it's slightly underpowered and the battery doesn't last long. Guess I'll just get a corded model for cheaper instead. #WorkshopAddict
This can use batteries from 2 amps to 5 amps. In this review, they used the 3 amp battery so the 5 amp battery would last almost twice as long. Also, the same batteries, LXT, can be used in all of Makita's 18v LXT equipment and unlike other makers, they have kept the same battery design which means you could use the new batteries on old 18v equipment (unlike my porter cable 18v that stopped making batteries for my 2 year old drill and impact drill, fu porter cable). It's the reason I'm buying Makita for all my new powered tools.
It doesn’t last very long because it is not brushless.
I have a corded version by Porter Cable and I won’t buy a Makita until it’s brushless
What are the S, D and Max setting?
Nice tool. #WorkshopAddict
Nice, does Makita make small reciprocating saws Cordless?
#Workshopaddict
Yes. They have a couple for 12V, and this one in 18v: www.makitatools.com/products/details/XRJ01Z
Go to home Depot website and type into search " sub compact reciprocating. Black one small 18 v awesome tool.
Where do you get the biscuits? Are they standard
supermarket ;)
they have biscuits of the whole wheat or of the oatmeal variety. (the depot should have biscuits)
Size 10 or Size 20 (more common)
hahaha, best reply
Great tool, but I wouldn't use without a vacuum hose, so still tied down with a cord. #workshopaddict
I'd say mine gets 95% of the dust if you just use the dust bag. For small projects, you can get by without needing to empty it in the middle of working too.
Where's the mashed potatoes and gravy. #WorkshopAddict
is a brushlees?
No, the circular indent type things on the side are clearly the brush covers
TheColinputer thanks for anwer
They should just license this thing, then sell the head alone as a grinder attachment.
Pity its not height adjustable no biggy just need a pile of shims.
Specialized 29er huh? Yes it’s height adjustable.
Don't Milwaukee will come out with one and say they are innovated
Big Daddy this comment is confusing?
