i would just play 4/4 the entire song eventually it would line up...
How can I describe the most progressive song ever created on the face of earth?
can be described as an Animals As Leaders song
+Morgan Aubin eeeeeeeeee no.
+ubi_v Actually: yes.
+ubi_v Actually: yes.
I'm not even a woman and this made me *prog-nant*, if you catch my drift.
oh shit kkkk
Seeing Rudess with hair and no goatee makes me chuckle
If this song was a person, I would married it.....
240p, we meet again.
Portnoy seriously sucked at video editing. He seemed to throw on a bunch of silly special effects without rhyme or reason.
This was in 2000 when video editing tools in general were garbage.
Yash Chauhan Even so, there were still videos in that era that were better edited than this.
***** At least he didn't +1 his own video.
Nettacki The video is from 2006, who was good at making videos in 2006?
The DVD this was taken from was from 2000. But I still expect better video editing from this era.
the guy on keyboard still had hair so you know this is kinda old lol
2:37-2:55 is extremely epic. Petrucci and Rudess play it very well
Genesis, Rush, King crimson,Dream Theater, Tool. All atonal, precise, and masterful.
"ye esta no es Instrumedley... es Dance of eternity Instrumedley es un mix de canciones en las que estan: -Dance of eternity -Metropolis part I -Erotomania -A change of seasons -The ytse jam -Hell's kitchen y 2 temas de Liquid tension experiment: Paradigm shift y Universal mind demasiado geniales todos los temas... demasiado genial dream theater de todos modos. Pero escucha los temas son muy bknes todos =)" What a first comment. ♥
2:24 - 2:26 LLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
xd
so progressive
wow
More than progressive
How many lives did this dvd change? 1,000,000 now?
John Myung writes the best lyrics!!
+MrDreamTheater2 John Myung also wrote the lyrics for Fatal Tragedy.
lyrics by myung
Dream Theater on SNL 1999
Dream Theater's volume of work in more than 25 years is mind boggling but this six minute masterpiece was their statement to all the other prog acts out there. YOU CAN'T TOUCH THIS!! And nobody ever has. Not before and not since.
I'm still amazed by this song, 10 years after it was released. These guys are unbelievable.
This song is very structured and it has plenty of melodious parts. My opinion. You really need to leave your mind open and listen to understand the musicality of DT. This is made to make you think.
I happen to have the sheet music for this. It's edited by John Petrucci so I doubt that it contains errors in the time signature
He likes it that way. He hates interviews and pictures yet he enjoys playing in front of thousands.. hmm
really? people disliked this!? its final, all these people who dislike this music are trolls. thats it
i dont like prog metal but this is good, i just hate metal and love prog rock
Mike was way more than "Just" A drummer for this band. Curious to see what DT come up with next. But to me There is no DT without Portnoy even though I am a guitar player and a huge John Petrucci. Regardless thats my opinion and it won't change.
Good Luck Dream Theater. I hope Mike returns to the band.
I
I wouldn't say that. They have much harder songs... For example the solo in Octavarium (one at like 12-13min) is way harder than anything in here. In the name of god solo is just ridicule. Don't even get me started on the Glass Prison or This Dying Soul. Mortals can't play those songs. But DoE is absolutely fantastic and is an amazing song to listen to! Love ragtime solo
No no, no that intro .... starting at 7 seconds to 12 seconds, you can hear the solo on the song Metropolis that starts at 3:40 (of the song Metropolis) and ends at 4:43 (its repeated twice) .. the guitar part.. listen closely, its almost in the background, but its there.
ok never heard them before im sorry dream theater fans dont hate me but personal opinion avenged sevenfold waaaaay better i just like heavier music how long have these guys been around?they look like an 80's hair band but the drumming is awesome
Gee, you guys really went too far.
I'm pretty sure there are forums for arguments like those. There is space for both good and bad reviews, but you're really doing it too much.
Who wants to listen to the song, it's there.
Who doesn't, doesn't have to.
@366z0rs
You really have to bite through the first few listens, but then you start to enter the ''Dream'' and the curtains of the ''Theater'' rise and you'll be treated to a Hamlet á la Dream Theater.
I'm sorry, always wanted to say that.
i plan on it. my birthday is coming up, and since i recently discovered Dream Theater through rock band, i plan on asking for every album they've made, including liquid tension experiment and john petrucci and jordan rudess's live preformance
You know Kevin Moore is their old keyboardist? Lol it was a joke, but seriously Images and Words is distinctly their best album in my mind, but they really couldn't technically progress as far without jordan.
@pantalaemon indeed. he's such an amazing guitarist but he needs to loosen up a bit sometimes. he ought to headbang or jump around the stage a bit lol. perhaps his guitar playing is too complex to think about that though idk.
1:33 oh no. thats the face he makes before he's about to go into world domination mode! few people have seen that face and lived to tell the tale. fortunately he held back to let rudess and myung have their moment in the sun!
oh i wont. dream theater inspires me to practice, especially jordan rudess (cuz piano is my main instrument), it kinda pushed me over the top in my decision to major in university in piano.
it WAS the original overture intro, but was changed during the writing of the album and was put as the intro for the 'crazy instrumental in the middle of metropolis' as they used to call it.
Check out this amazing cover: Adi Avdic - The Dance Of Eternity - Drum Cover (16 years old)
I dont believe in this song, I just cant believe it really exists :(
it's so unreal
ah yess. tons of tempo changes plus lots of fucked up time signatures and fucked up key signatures and weird ass phrasing and odd orchestration = DT = EPIC WINSAUCE
@jesse9999999 wow, I didn't know that, where are those measures in the song ?
I know at the end of the song there are some really crazy time signature changes
God you're opinon is so good, i also hate those MF of dragonforce...!! Dream Theater rules...!!
never there´s gonna be another band like Dream......
No, he is right. The time signature changes at least 100 times in this song.
It takes immense stamina to play like Myung does.. Victor Wooten is great in his own right, but I believe Myung is truly a force of nature.
haha when jordan is doing the ragtime key solo his face is something like kramer and hes sayng: yeaah mothefucka!!!i nailed it (as usualy but )
i think this is the first time where i heard the live version actually sound like the way it is on the album. thats the way it shud be..
Not a big fan of DT but I gotta say this song rocked! These boys can play!
@Voitcu your right. dream theater have ten albums (soon to be eleven) worth of songs to prove theyre better than those other guys
@sipasabayag so they dont really have any heavy songs?before i checked them out i pictured them to have like a pantera sound to them
well obviously you don't like them so wouldn't have taken the time to listen to them, so you would not recognize their similarities
I listen to music that instantly captivates me and gives me goosebumps. I don't want to spend hours TRYING to get to like music :P
Controlled chaos! I first heard the string tribute of this song and knew the original had to kick some major ass. I was right!
I never realized it before, but the style of this song is a lot like the style of BTBAM (mostly from Alaska).
if i have a coin for every pixel in this video i would have a coin
@WillScheff Exactly. One has to learn the basic first before immersing in such complex time signatures.
IT IS!? holy crap. the whole song or just a specific part. And it does fit DBZ now that i think about it
amazingly most of this song is actually in 4/4 lol. yet even in 4/4 they can make it sound so...PROG!!!
@rickylefebvre Jajaja keep talking, your funny :D
Man, no offense to Mike Mangini or Portnoy but DT should have hired Blake Richardson as their new drummer. It would be epic to see him behind the kit. I dunno. Maybe DT could make one final album with Mangini come 2013, and a one year tour then after that Mangini could take a break from DT. Blake Richardson could step in for just ONE album and a 2 year tour, then after that Mangini could have back his spot. :)
@ErikJonssonMusic
dragonforce have longer songs, it ends there. their use of instruments is very simple, their vocalist hardly has any range or anything special about him, they hardly ever play outside of 4/4 if they ever have, and their lyrics are obviously far from intelligent. only one prog element there, try again. symphony x, to describe them in the most specific way possible, is neo-classical progressive power metal. plenty of elements and genres there. they are prog metal, the end.
@ErikJonssonMusic
elements of progressive metal and progressive music in general:
longer songs
time signature changes
more complex use of instruments and more instruments
stronger and more advanced vocals
more intellectual lyrics
is symphony x missing any of these? no, they aren't. first i get an idiot telling me that dream theater hasn't done anything new and isn't progressive and then i get you telling me that symphony x leans more towards power metal.
@menschmaschine5 I know that Beethoven was much more revolutionary than Dream Theater. He composed entire symphonies and Dream Theater writes songs, huge difference. Not to mention he was deaf. I'm aware that Beethoven is much more amazing as well. I suppose you may be correct in the argument between Beethoven and Mozart because I'm not educated enough in that. Also, I'm not trying to flame in any way, just sharing a thought I had.
@slayermanbob I dunno. You have to think about why Beethoven is considered great. No offense to DT, but they're nowhere near as revolutionary as Beethoven was. Sure, this song has constantly changing time signatures, but that's not a new idea anymore.
Also, I'm not sure about the "Mozart more complex" thing. Sure, he wrote some really difficult counterpoint, but it depends on how we're measuring. Beethoven's harmony and the structure of his pieces tended to be more complicated than Mozart's.
The Ragtime piano part is the best for me, but I do agree the whole song is the best part: it is needed for the ragtime part to stand out of it... pretty much sums up my last important philosophical revelation : It does not matter if you do the same thing over and over all your life, as long as there are lots of other stuff you don't do to give the impression you made a choice...
@MichRockHop81108 i can understand that if u listen to this song,
but you obviously haven't listened to another day, wither, best of times, sacrificed sons, through her eyes, the spirit carries on, the list goes on
they all show amazing amounts of soul, but there is also their robotic-style skill songs, like stream of consciousness, this dying soul, dark eternal night, in the presence of enemies.
the only problem i have with dt is that myung +petruccis stage presence sucks balls
@66gt40lm
-You are wrong for assuming I came to the video solely to talk down about it. Sorry boy, but I have better things to do than troll youtube.
-The fact that you started an argument based on nothing, and were making up points to justify your argument (which I never directly argued back) shows that you were in fact arguing by yourself.
-Calling you a kid is directly relative to how you've held yourself this whole time with the pseudo-intellectual make-believe argument, and assumptions.
@Cessate You IMPLIED they were bad. but unfotunately tone of a comment can't be felt on the interwebs, so whatever. I'm wrong for believing that you implied they were bad. I was proving to you they are not bad, especially instrumentally. All I wanted you to say was that they aren't bad, because you cannot honestly sit there and say that about them. You might not like them, I understand that, but you cannot say they are bad and I thought that's what you were implying.
@66gt40lm Now you're making up your own definition of the word opinion. Good thing I provided a dictionary quote in my last post, hey? Me claiming DT is over-hyped IS an opinion, and an opinion I stand by. The fact that individually, they musicians in the band are great, means nothing. As a consecutive whole, as a band, they are over-hyped.
It's a pretty simple concept that you refuse to acknowledge because you're hellbent on being "right" over something that you can't prove as right or wrong.
@66gt40lm I'm proving that I can't read by continuously commenting on direct statements that you're making. That's absolutely flawless logic right there.
What you're failing to blatantly understand, and as I've mentioned (and will continue to mention until it seeps through that thick skull of yours), is that you're arguing against a personal opinion as if I was basing it as fact (which I'm not), and attempting to prove said opinion wrong (which is impossible).
@66gt40lm o·pin·ion (ə-pĭn'yən)
n.
1. A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof: "The world is not run by thought, nor by imagination, but by opinion" (Elizabeth Drew).
3. A judgment or estimation of the merit of a person or thing: has a low opinion of braggarts.
So yes. It IS an opinion. I believe they're over-hyped. That doesn't mean I think they're bad musicians, it means I thinks as a band, they are nothing special.
@66gt40lm Really? 6 comments? Jesus christ boy, get over yourself already. And yes, I did read the dribble you stated, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to directly respond to your various banter, now would I?
You made a statement that DOESN'T MATTER. You're attempting to argue against my PERSONAL OPINION which, I will state again, WILL NOT CHANGE. Your views on DT being "the best in the world" DOES NOT MATTER. Is there any way I can make this already simple concept easier for you? Shit.
@Cessate What I said was far from a mindless temper tantrum, I have stated facts as to why they are not bad where you have merely only stated in one sentence they are overhyped (with no other argument to prove this other than your idiotic rights for free speech and opinions) and the rest of your skills were focused on calling me out for being a mad fanboy for the next four paragraphs. Literally, that is your argument. You should feel accomplished at that, really.
@Cessate The reason I compared DT to Slipknot was because it was a band that I know most people know, and was just one band I could have named on a list of probably hundreds. I never said DT was the only band with musical flow, but I'm giving you the reason that they know how to write a fucking song correctly unlike 90% of bands who put stupid masks on as try to play an instrument.
@66gt40lm There you go again with the "I'm right and you're wrong because I said so" quip. Your logic is that of a 6 year old trying to reason why there's crayon on the walls.
You've yet to make a valid point that has anything to do to somehow magically change my personal opinion on DT. You're conjuring make-believe arguments and declaring yourself the "winner"; though I suppose it's easy to win when you're the only one in the race.
You seem better skilled to race RC boats than debate.
@66gt40lm You act as if DT is the only band in existence who play with overall rhythmic flow. Sorry to tell you, friend, but that's not the case.
And no you aren't right. You compared DT to Slipknot, for no reason what so ever. When the fact remains that I think DT is over-hyped. The fact that they're great musicians doesn't null that what so ever; thus your argument is still solely "You don't like DT. I like DT. Therefore I'm right and you're wrong."
That is NOT a valid argument.
@66gt40lm Wrong. I came here saying that Dragon Force was terrible, but DT weren't anything THAT special themselves. Also note that the comment was directed to someone who wasn't you. You should probably write down how this is one persons (me) opinion.
I'd also like you to look up the definition of "illiterate" as it clearly doesn't mean what you're wanting it to mean.
Also. I'm not wrong. Opinions are factually unable to be wrong. You can disagree with them, but they can not be wrong. DERP.
@66gt40lm The reason DT is actually compiled of the best musicians around is because unlike most music, a lot of rock specifically, their music typically always flows. There is a rythm from drums to bass and bass to guitar/keyboard. If you listen to a band like Slipknot for instance, they never actually flow as a song. it's the reason I stopped listening to them years ago because now I actually have musical knowledge and understanding of how a song should sound from one instrument to another.
@Cessate Says you, who gives no fact about this band being "overhyped". I won't lie, this isn't my favorite band. I would listen to Megadeth over DT all day, but I will be the first to admit DT has a great amount of musical talent over Megadeth. Your assumptions of me being a fanboy were wrong, so doesn't that make you a hypocrite? Honestly, I still wanna hear these "better" bands you speak of.
@27915678 its all about ones perpective, there will be some diehard DT fans that will say that the new stuff is better. being a hardcore metallica fan i have understod this in very much the same way you have most likely seeing how drastically metallica has changed. still i have liked every album practically equal except reload because half of the song i would rather not listen to, then there are some who hate all but the first set of albums, all about perspective.
The meter changes are really difficult but as a musician, let me tell you that getting this together as a whole group is by far the hardest. Individually its not that bad but they need to make sure they are completely together as a band or this is just going to fall apart completely. There are sections where each person is playing a completely different thing but they still need to be together in the meter. The ragtime solo sounds pretty cool but for someone like rudess its a piece of cake.
Thats very true but, I still think that overall its their most technical work as a band because of how hard it is (and trust me I've tried it) to play all of these parts together. You pretty much need to be fluent in all meter changes and not just you but all members. Which DT song isnt a technical masterpiece? I'm still going to have to stick wit this being the most technical because of how hard it is to play this as a band (and not just individually) and still make it sound musical.
Corresponding with that theory, I have a separate one of my own, that good music spawns mediocre offspring. For example, it's a common idea that metal was inspired by jazz. I'm not saying metal's bad; it's actually awesome, but I think that jazz has a better feel... if you know what I mean. Then let's say for example, Pantera, which is metal and was inspired by other metal bands. It's pretty good. And Pantera supposedly influenced A7X, which many consider awful and not true metal. So in turn,
@Darkfirelover Thank goodness it's not true then. Someone must've posted wrong info. It just wouldn't make any sense for Lars Ulrich to leave a mega band like Metallica for what? this cruddy band? No offense but seriously, this band doesn't compare to the greatness of Metallica. I'm so glad it was only a false rumour.
growing a little tired to the ancient "Myung did the lyrics" joke. Myung doesn't need to use his voice to project his emotions and dedication to his music. he's always seemed like a soft spoken modest man to me who loves to play and share his music and in my opinion, that's the best way to be. go Myung, keep showing us up in any of our bass enterprises XD
@MichRockHop81108 pre sure rudess is the only one readin music ,
and i couldnt agree more, they need more impro in their shows, like the thing they do in under a gl;ass moon in score is beast, and beyond this live at budoken, but thats not really impro
and ud be standing still if ur time signatures are that emssed up :P
@MichRockHop81108 " I guess I Idolize soul rather than technique" No you don't. You like what you like, that's it. I find more soul in this than I do in most of the so-called "soulful" players music. We all have different opinions, but "soul" is something YOU get from the music, it isn't something the musicians put in it.
@kerna7x666 yep, this is a song from an album that showcases their more progressive side. check out the albums Systematic Chaos, Train of Thought, and their latest, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. I haven't given the latter much of a listen, but I do recall one track, A Rite of Passage, having some hetfield-inspired chugging sounds.
@chhc07 The interesting thing about having that many time signatures is that it makes this song very unique (contemporary music-wise). The first time I heard this song was about 6 years ago and I loved it. Today is the first time listening to the song in 3 years and I remember every change perfectly. If something is this elaborate and rare, it's difficult to forget.
@Viterkim from what I've heard, their instrumental songs, and the instrumental parts of their other songs, are some of the best I've heard. There is no argument about the virtuosity of the band members. As soon as any vocals come in though, BLEARGH! Lame-itude. It sounds like Evanescence songs sung by castrati.
@horrabletypoe its because this band does not keep a normal 4-4 beat. thus the beat is different changing the way you would headbang. BUT this is dream theatre and they don't stay in the same beat the whole song. it always changes. and constantly changes. also random fact: Mike Portnoy never does the same fill EVER!!! its SOOOO AMAZING
@Cessate
I'll accept your opinions, but understand that most people who listen to them will think you are out of your mind. I'm guessing that this style of music isn't your cup of tea.
By the way, 66gt40lm is an embarrassment to Dream Theater fans. Anyone who savagely lashes out at someone just because they express an opinion is not welcome to me.
They are better than dragon force but if we talk about vocalist dragon force is better and if we talk about guitarrist style hernan is really good with the finger tapping and the way he pull off the strings is just motherfucking good but even with that nobody can with this progressive style this is the best song ever iin this motherfucker progressive world!!!
@66gt40lm No I didn't You ASSUMED that's what I implied. You're making up crap in order to justify your absolutely flawed attempt at an argument. Nothing more.
Once again, individually as musicians, they aren't band. As a singular force, a band? That's very debatable depending on a persons taste; otherwise their opinion.
The end.
@Cessate So again, I'm still requesting some sort of actual argument as to why you think they are overhyped and bad other than your typical mindless American attitude of "I have and opinion and a piece of paper that says I can!" because that is literally all I've witnessed you rambling on about.
And before you say anything, yes I'm American as well.
@66gt40lm So there you go, an actual argument as to why I am right here. Not some "angst-ridden fanboyism" talking, as if it was before. While you are still there thinking of a comeback as to why I'm wrong, I'm gunna go to sleep. I'm sure you need some time to recover and think about what you wanna come back with!
@66gt40lm I never knew that people weren't allowed opinions either. What is this, a new law?
"YOU HAVE TO LIKE THIS BAND BECAUSE I LIKE IT! IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SAME BAND I LIKE THEN YOU OBVIOUSLY SUCK AT EVERYTHING AND DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING! DUUUUUR!"
You should probably grow up, just a tad.
You know what I find funny about this band particullary john petrucci is that John was rated the #2 greatest metal guitarist of all time by Joel mcivers top 100 metal guitarists and the guitarist from children of bodom said that Dream theater sucked well guess what alexi you didnt even make the top 10 xD
@cheef155 it takes a musician to "truly" understand them.. I listened to DT before I started to play an instrument too and I can understan what you mean.. but don't you feel like you can appreciate them more than before? For example, when I hear a strange Portnoy's fill, a solo in a unusual tone, I can notice and enjoy it more :D
they say this is the only song you can't bang your head like beavis and butthead to. they are wrong. i can bang my head to this... well, the parts in 4/4, that is, not the parts in 7/16, 11/16, 15/8, 17/16, or all of the other weird time signatures they go into. this does seem to be good for guitar hero someday, like the last song because it would be really, really, really hard.
I love these guys and the style they created/ adapted from older bands such as yes, but I really wish bands would stop trying to write epics like DT. Even if you have the technical skill to write prog rock/speed metal songs that change times within measures and have 13 sweeping guitar solos, you're just going to be reaming DT. so stop already. ok i'm done.
fuuuuccckkkk i didnt mean to 3 star it just for that i give it infinite star best song by D.T
