I'm black and I happen to absolutely love leon, even though we're different skin colors. See howllywood, people don't need the same skin color to relate to someone
Non racist have never needed that. I have never been not able to sympathies with character no matter which skin color, sex or species they represent IF they are well written. Never expected that stories should have characters that are images of myself. They are after all stories, adventures and events that happened to other (fictional) characters, why should I expect I should be represented? It's like reading some news article and not liking it because it has characters and people that are not you.
I'm white as a sheet and my childhood heroes included pretty much every character played by Wesley Snipes, Will Smith and Denzel Washington. The Blade Trilogy was my go-to vampire hack&slash flicks :)
Leon's a chump. What badass can't use a combat knife to deflect flaming pieces of Wood and explosive barrels thrown at him by a parasitic Spider-Priest? The Merchant could probably tank them with his pinky like Goku against Trunks sword.
I appreciated how campy the orig version was with all Leon's one liners and Salazar just being Salazar. It's very much a personal taste thing but I thought it was fun. I won't miss the QTEs though, especially for the knife fight.
Yeah, when the drinker said that QTEs were annoying my first reaction was "wat? They were ok, don't see the problem there" and then I remembered that bloody Krauser knife fight, ughh
I’m totally with you on the Ada voice. She’s always been a femme fatale who’s intentions were vague and could kiss you as easily as she could kill you. The voice should definitely match that kind of personality, but the actress was VERY dull in the delivery…and the best part is she called everyone racist for not liking an Asian person’s performance. Imagine that…it’s not like Ada is a well loved RE character who happens to be Asian herself.
Ada's voice has kinda always been flirtatious with a a hint of seriousness to it. In RE4 she sounds dead inside and it's not good. Her voice in RE2 was perfect but identity politics is why it got changed.
@@sincerelynotme3522 Afaik, I remember reading the real reason was because the VA from RE2R joined an union, and Capcom doesn't work with VAs in unions. And in this case in particular, she joined one that's on bad terms with Capcom. Sorry to say that I don't have a source for this tho, it's just something I remember. I would have to go double check the info.
@@paulcorvans5767 I heard that too which I was upset about but to hire an actress who had no prior work in voice acting and was only really hired because she was Asian was not the call to make because she was terrible. It was the one constant complaint I saw about the game was that Ada's VA was awful. And rather than try to take that criticism and vow to do better she blamed fans and turned off her Instagram. Not a good look, especially since I heard she was also hating on white people as well which was weird.
Only hiccup I have with the game is the villains are robbed of so much personality. Both Sadler and Ramon from what clips I've found in the OG were memorable villains, Salazar being an obvnoxious rival that regularly tried to prove his superiority to Leon while Sadler was almost self aware and never lost his cool for even a second, while in the remake they barely have enough screen time to develop them.
"Your right hand comes off?" :) But for real, Salazar is too much of a serious dude this time. I guess they had to make it that way, considering the overall shift in tone compared to the original RE4
@Tranzisto I believe they are trying to keep it serious so they never get another re6 scenario. That said, they should have kept in the villains calling Leon throughout.
Best part of Resident Evil 4 Remake is putting Ashley in a full plate suit of armor again and it's still Invincible to any firearms you unleash at her.
I completed this recently and it’s honestly the greatest and most enjoyable game I’ve ever played, and not just the best in the series. It’s the only game where I’ve wanted to immediately start playing it again after completing it. A perfect mix of action, adventure and horror.
Imagine if this was given the RE3make treatment; The village would have been a linear corridor, Mendez would be cutscene-only, and the Island would be cut.
@@kiryu_kazuma168 true but after learning about Luis being part of the team that made nemesis in re4r I think he had some responsibility for making it weaker. It’s no excuse for the writers or whomever was responsible for that mess in re3r but I find it interesting
He did an entire retrospective series on the RE series a bunch of years ago. Definitely worth checking out... they are what turned me on to him in the first place. I think he did a Tomb Raider series retrospective, too.
A terrific remake that sadly lost its B-Movie flavor. I happily replay it over and over, but I'll forever miss the fun I had with Salazar and Saddler calling Leon and having a few laughs.
My dad started to play more when he was 45. Now he plays Resident Evil and other stuff while bragging about his PS5, I don't have it yet. His favourites are REvelations side games.
I honestly loved how campy and goofy the original Resident Evil 4 was, and removing most of the camp for the remake robs the villains of a lot of personality. The villains no longer hijack Leon's codec just to taunt him, because why on Earth would they do that? How would they do that? This is a lot more believable, but now all the dialogue is squeezed into their boss fight and you can't hear any of it because there's an entire boss fight going on. So many of Leon's best one liners were in the codec calls, and now most of them are either gone or you can't hear them over screaming and gunfire. I've heard that the voice actress for Ada in some movie was brought in, and she gave the same style of delivery she gave before.
I know it's not the most common of opinions, but I actually really love the way the original RE4 looks. 😅 I know it's pretty bleak, but the atmosphere always reminds me of the chilly yet serene, overcast autumn days I used to enjoy as a kid growing up in Michigan. It's one of the main reasons RE4 is such a comforting game for me, despite how, well, horrific it is. Likewise, I find the lake section in the Remake to be incredibly comforting as well. Pretty much for the exact same reasons I mentioned above in regards to the original.
While I agree that Lord Saddler isn't the most complicated villain ever, I did like the little changes they made, like having his dialogue focus around peace and unification, or the cave plaque listing his place in the ancestry of the cult. He came across more as a man who genuinely believed the Plagas hive mind would end war and suffering, as opposed to the cackling villain of before who would gloat about taking over the world.
I absolutely loved playing through this remake. I went back and played the original afterwards and once you get past the slightly wonky controls and muscle memory messing you up, it still holds up really well. That knife breaking mechanic they've added into the remake though needs to go to the bottom of the sea in a carbon fibre submersible.
I've never played an RE game. Closest I've gotten to is playing as Jill in MvC2, and I only played that game because I like Mega Man, and the Marvel Universe. I've always wanted to try RE, but I never really committed to trying it. This seems like the best time to get into the series with RE4 Remake. Great review as always!
A problem I have with the RE4 remake that I haven't seen many people talk about is the voice of Wesker in all the other games despite being portrayed by multiple actors over the years each of those actors where trying to do the same type of voice this new guy sounds like a completely different character. If all the other actors for Wesker portrayed him differently like how each of the actors for Leon did throughout the series I wouldn't really care but the way he speaks has been consistent throughout the series.
Except in the first game. Lord, that voice was awful even by that game's standards. The only competing one is the guy who gets bitten by the giant snake ("there're terrible demons... OUCH!" [dies])
cause Capcom has gotten cheaper in the new generations, they avoid unions and heavily focus their VA work to lower (cheaper) talent, typically canadian and it shows in all of their modern works, just more apparent here
As somebody who completely missed the Resident Evil train until RE7 came out I am fascinated by this original RE4 footage. They actually put so much effort into recreating the village exactly as it was with modern graphics over it.
A good take on this remake, Drinker. I'd have to say, I think I agree with absolutely everything you said. It's about how I viewed it, down to the closing statement.
Played through this game many times now... Wonderfully fun game. Same fun as the classic REmake on the GCN? No. Both are masterpieces in their own respective styles and ways though.
Something I noticed was the toning down on the clothes of Jill and Claire in the previous remakes, and the toning down in the innuendos and covered Ada up, from toe to neck for this one. It happens that Japan also joined the ESG scores, go figures. Perhaps that's why the failure of RE Nemesis remake? Fortunately they did a lot of things right and I wish I could play it. I'll have to confirm with playing the OG in my PS2 and GC.
I'm currently playing the UHD Edition of the original because my rusty old computer can't handle the remake, but I will definitely play it when I get my hands on a newer PC, anyways, it's normal for me get into a "new" game when almost everyone already left it behind and are now into something else newer 😅
Speaking of other RE games, my favorite has alwasy been and continues to be Code: Veronica. I bought a Dreamcast JUST to play that game! (It was originally an exclusive title for that system). I know they already remade the first game, but I'd love to see it done proper in the RE engine (and bring back the Cradle To The Grave puzzle!). I liked the dark, forbidding environments of classic RE and, yeah, I finished RE4* back on the GameCube, I've never been compelled to revisit it like I have RE1/2/3/CV
Code: Veronica is a main line game, even when it's missing a number. Originally Nemesis was a side game happening at the same time as 2 but Capcom made a deal with Sony to rebrand it as the third game. So story wise Veronica really is the third one.
Hello Drinker, I was a bit sceptical about the Resident Evil 4 remake. But I trust you judgement because you are a honest fellow and you have earned my respect, so I'll give it a go. Plus it will be the first Resident Evil game that I've played. Keep up the great work mate and I send brotherly greetings from Australia. Hasta la vista Drinker.
Man you'll have a blast if you like third person action story games. If you liked this one, I highly recommend playing RE2 + RE3 remakes, RE7, and RE8. You could try 5 as well eventually but it's a little dated
@@LeeEverett1 Thanks for the recommendations mate. I'm normally into RPGs like Dragon Age Origins and first person shooters like the original Battlefront games, Far Cry Blood Dragon and Halo. But this is going to be a fun experience, have a nice day.
Ada Wong's voice sounds more weird than bad. It's almost like the actress recorded her lines on a different studio, in a different country, with a different device and then they put it all together at the last minute.
It’s kind of crazy how Leon went from his rookie cop To secret agent, super zombie killing soldier, bodyguard of the White House. That’s quite a career jump.
The remake is definitely my game of the year, but I'm absolutely biased. The original was the first Resident Evil game I ever played and it was one of the first few games I had ever played. I have such fond memories of 7-year-old me and my uncle playing this on his PS2 back in 2007, even though I didn't understand English at the time I found this game both awesome and terrifying. When they started releasing teasers and trailers for this game, I was very concerned that they would fuck it up. When I 100% the remake and realized it was almost everything I wanted it to be and then some, it brought a genuine tear of joy to my eye and I am glad I got to experience this game again.
I would say RE4 original did quick time events right. Just when you think you can sit back and relax with a cutscene, it kept you on your toes and punished you if the button prompts were missed with a variety of Leon deaths that were only available thru cutscenes
@@virvum_cypher Yup. They were pretty cool in old God of War games at first but I'm glsd that's a thing of a past. Also, Insomniac's Spider-Man games let you decide do you want QTEs or not, so I'm just enjoying the visuals without worrying over buttons.
I love this game. I literally have not played another game since my first play through and I'm on my 9th play through. I am really looking forward to Separate ways. I love both versions of this game but i do like this Leon more. He feels more confident but still maintains the same level of compassion as RE2 remake Leon so he feels considerably more consistent than the original RE4 leon. Not that you can go wrong with either version. I didn't have a problem with Ada as much as others did. I think her performance in RE2 remake is better but this one sounds like someone more pressured into what she's doing with a hint of a conscience. It also doesn't hurt that Ada is just so damn fine in this game 😁 Hopefully a lot of what was missing in the main game like U-III comes back in separate ways. I have a feeling it will also explain why Luis wasn't were he said he'd be before the Mines.
The original Re4 is one of my favorite games. I couldn't help but be disappointed by this remake. I just felt it lost so much of the charm the original game had and just made everything more generic. If I had never played Re4, I probably would have liked the remake. I thought the Re2 remake and the Dead Space remake were fantastic. But that might be because I didn't play the original of either game.
Oh man, thank you SO much for shining a light on how jarring it was going from RE 1, 2 and 3 set in generally down to Earth modern American zombie infested settings and suddenly being thrown into this weird time warped Euro setting with castles and parasites and antique guns I started on RE 2 when it was practically new. I loved it and moved on to RE 3. Loved that as well. Then went back and played RE 1 just to see what I missed there, loved that also. Then RE 4 came out and while I was alright with it it really did throw me off with the setting and parasites and "rescuing the presidents daughter" and all of that At the time I told my friends "yeah it's alright. It's not really Resident Evil but I'd recommend a play through". And holy shit was I in the minority because now everyone says RE 4 is their favorite Lol. I mainly think I'm just an old bag who was there when the sacred scrolls were written and the current core fan base all started on RE 4 so thats what they identify with and the earlier games are the weird ones to them but man, it really really was a very shocking change of pace for us when it first dropped
Shame the big screen can’t match the what games have done to keep this franchise alive. Sure the Milla Jovovich films have their fan base, but it seems lately every time there’s a movie or show trying to profit off the RE name, it ends up more pathetic than our president trying to successfully climb up a flight of stairs.
RE4 was my first complete Resident Evil experience, since when I was a kid I got frustrated with and gave up on the constant camera angle changes of the earlier games. I played through this one four times on my Gamecube, and would be more than happy to play it again on my Xbox series X.
I very much enjoyed it and it's still one of my favorite games of all time. I just couldn't help missing the countless sections of the game they removed for this version and didn't really add anything to replace it.
Love the original, but the remake is better for it (in my opinion). The pacing and difficulty curve are so smooth; it's probably the best paced I've played yet.
In response to your quote at the end, i'm a recemt fan of resident evil, only getting introduced to it in the past year or so, and 4 was such a jarring experience to me that i basically consider it a completly dofferent game. (I considered 7 + 8 a tad clkser but they had problems of their own)
Im also just play this game recently, not finished it yet but wow, the fun factor, gameplay loop and surprise we can find is in abundance here just like the original. At first it made us worry, tense, and afraid but after gaining some skill killing ganados is just a tactical and strategic placement of our position where they most vulnerable to attack. And the search of that strategy is what is the most fun thing to experience
Not sure I'm onboard with this sequel, there's some weird, backwards design at work in it. Like, we don't get a knife to preserve our ammo because it has limited durability. Why does it have limit durability? Because there's a parry system. Why is there a parry system? Because you need to be able to block instant kill moves. Why do we need to parry those? Because you don't have the speed and maneuverability you did in the original to reliably move out of the way of such attacks to add more "tension" to the fights. Why is there an ammo crafting system? Because there's less ammo pickups in this version of the game to add "tension". You know I played the original RE4 because it was fun and fast-paced compared to the rest of the series, which had become tiredly formulaic and frustrating. It had a lot of action and 80's movie charm while still balancing it out with moments of genuine horror (everyone remembers the introduction to the regenerators). So these little "additions" feel more like they're trying to change the whole pace of the game, when really that was what breathed new life into the series in the first place. We had more tanky and intelligent enemies that we had to develop tactics around, like hobbling them and often making sure to just clip them first so they couldn't wind up their attacks before they could be addressed, allowing us to quickly respond to large groups of enemies surrounding us thanks to stun mechanics and a main character the moved quickly. We were able to save our ammo for boss fights and set piece moments thanks to having a reliable melee option, and it still required a measure of skill to utilize this well and not get overwhelmed. They decided to do it all "different" in the remake, but not necessarily "better". I understand that RE4 was a double-edged sword and that it caused CAPCOM to over correct things one direction and delude the series moving forward, but this game struck the best balance between action thrills and tense horror elements. It'll always be highly regarded for revitalizing the series and bringing in new players. Maybe it was just too much to imagine that CAPCOM could recapture that this time around.
RE4 REmake was excellent! It took everything (almost...) and just made it better, while doubling down on the horror! Fingers crossed for the Seperate Ways DLC!🤞
Sounds like you felt similarly about this as I did. I love 4 but I wish the series stayed grounded in reality. The tone of the originals was just incredible, mostly creatures mutated by the virus with a few engineered ones thrown into the mix. Characters felt more vulnerable and realistic even if some of the dialogue was campy, not superhuman badasses suplexing enemies. That said, I thoroughly love 4 campiness included, and the remake even tones that down a tad. The gameplay is amazing and the atmosphere is great even if things are over the top and very cliche. I just can't help but wonder what an evolution of this series that stayed grounded would have looked like.
Yes, I played this through once so far. I loved the original and platinumed it. My favourite games in the series are RE2 Remake, RE7 and RE4 I think. I loved the original RE1 and RE2, but the Remake played far better. I liked RE3 Remake, but not so much as RE2 Remake. The enemies in 7 were a bit samey, but Jack was runaway the best stalker character and the horror setting was much appreciated. What I liked about 4 Remake was that it'd tapped into that nostalgia and familiarity, but offered a few surprises too. I thought Ashley was better characterized in the Remake. She comes across as very young in the original in hindsight and the change makes for more interesting interractions with Leon. I know what you mean about Ada, but I actually think the style was chosen and inentional. I really think they wanted her to be a cold, stoic, difficult to read character. I don't know if the wa they achieved that was a good thing, but I feel like they achieved it. I'm really interested to see what they come up with for Re9
I really loved the remake, where I didn't particularly enjoyed the original because it lacked horror and was too goofy. The remake for me perfectly fixed what I didn't like about the original. The atmosphere, visuals, horror are excellent and they've toned down the goofiness a bit. So far, my favorite game of 2023. My most anticipated game for this year is STALKER 2, hope it will be as good! Also, it should be mentioned that Capcom delivered a polished and complete game on release, with very minimal microtransactions (they exist, but they are not in your face and I love that). Yes, the game didn't have mercenaries on release or the Ada gameplay, but hell I felt super satisfied with the game. It didn't hold my hand, I had a proper challenge on Hardcore and then Professional difficulties, I had immense fun while playing that game. Well done Capcom! Western studios, take notes from FromSoftware and Capcom!
This was such a damn good game and it raised the bar in how remakes should be handled. I completely agree with you about Ada's VA, no idea why they couldn't just bring back the one from RE2.
Union issues, the VA wanted the role, but the union red taped her on this issue Most likely wage issue & i think they just have to do with anybody available THEN, so they use the actor from welcome to raccoon city ada, and she bombed it We'll see if RE2R Ada VA can come back for the DLC capcom can get away with this because ada's script is minimal for main story, not so much when they DLC dedicated to her
Dude… for once I just have to disagree with you. I absolutely love the original and play every year around Halloween. I’ve done so for twenty years basically. I completed the new one and started to play a new game plus and…just stopped. I didn’t have an interest in going through it again. Like, there was nothing that stood out to me in my first playthru that made me feel like I’d be excited to play it again. The original had such a vibe and atmosphere that every fall when it’s cold and dreary and the leaves are off the trees and there’s fog around, you felt like you wanted to see that village again. The new one just didn’t feel like that.
That's because you beat the first one so many times that you can't get over your nostalgia for it. I've beaten the original at least 10 times since it came out and I honestly have zero desire to revisit it since this remake dropped. It's far superior, your nostalgia blinds you.
@@JohnGoetzGaming yeah, I think that’s a certain part of it. The other guy is right; the nostalgia is unbeatable. But the original had a mechanized statue of Spanish napoleon homage that chased you across a bridge. In other words, pretty campy and a bit ridiculous. However, mixed with the tight action and constant feeing like you were on the razors edge with supplies, it was a kind of horror camp that was somehow in the same vein of classic movie ventures like evil dead 2. I guess at the end of the day, the new one took itself pretty serious and somehow, that’s cheesier than all of the overtop villains in the entire original
I'm one of those stubborn fans who does not like the direction resident Evil 4 brought the franchise into, not that I hated the game, but a disappointed me at first of a while for it to grow on me So as such I wasn't actually all that excited about this remake, one because it's not one of my favorite games in the franchise, and two because I thought the original still held up well enough that it didn't really need a remake. It's definitely a little clunky and shows its age but it doesn't take that long to get used to it and the game itself is still solid But they managed to make me absolutely love this game, and it's what the original should have been. They added just enough horror back into it so that the whole thing doesn't just feel like schlocky action, and it takes itself a bit more seriously I know some people think the goofy dialogue is part of the charm of the original but I always thought it felt really out of place in the franchise, because despite it being over the top it did always take itself seriously
I really love the show of restraint that the remake has. I know that I'm part of the minority but I adore the original Ashley I thought that she was a great escort mission based almost entirely on the fact that I could stow her away and she wouldn't complain but she was also endearing and cute and I actually wanted to keep her safe. For the sequel I was almost certain that she was going to get turned into a SFC but they didn't do that. Yes she's a little more competent, but she is respectfully frightened of this entire situation, and is doing her absolute best but lacks any combat awareness. The entire segment where you play as her is filled with her being absolutely terrified but also refusing to give up because she wants to help the person that she cares about. A legitimately strong female character instead of a SFC. That alone makes this game 10/10
they deserved it for such shitty behaviour. imagine being an obnoxious piece of shit that you have to harass someone because you didn’t like their voice acting. grow up
Story aside, which I never cared for in the original anyways, the only thing I don't like in the remake is the camera. It zooms in way to much when you aim. Especially if you're backed up against a wall, you can't see shit. In the original this was not a problem because the enemies were always funneled in front of you. In the remake it can be a problem because they come from everywhere and try to flank you. And I know that I'm not alone in this because there's a PC mod that fixes the zoom. Fantastic remake. I've been playing it since release and it never gets old. You can tell that it is a remake of a game developed in a bygone era, with a different design philosophy. Pure gaming fun in a market that has been more focused on cutscenes and live services rather than gameplay.
I slightly disagree on saddler. While he was always a mostly generic bad guy, he at least had SOME personality in the original. In the OG, his banter with Leon was very enjoyable, and you got the sense that he actually enjoyed having Leon as an adversary. In this one, they took away what little characterization he had. That, and the VAs for Ada and Krauser didnt really do it for me. Those are my main complaints. The rest was great.
If you played the OG RE4, you know that the Iron Maiden fight was something special. But the way they introduced Iron-Maiden in the remake was 10/10, me and the boys in discord were screaming when it appeared.
If anything it brought back a little spark from this old gamer as well for it was RE4 that got me into the Resident Evil sphere in the first place and after RE3R I was fearful that that RE4R would suffer the same fate and well it didn't.
I had RE1 and RE2 for PC back in the day. RE2 has been the only game that scared the hell out of me, and I really don't scare easily. First, it was going down the hallway in the police station and seeing the licker pass by through the window. That was the setup. The thing that got me was walking down another hallway when suddenly a bunch of crows shatter all the windows and come streaming in. It was at that exact moment that I freaked out and inadvertently slapped the oversize power button on my PC, and spent the next 10 minutes calling myself a dumb ass in the dark. I never played RE2 again after that. It wasn't out of fear, or anything, I was just not motivated to go back and play on. Other games with horror elements just make me laugh, or cringe internally. Jump scares don't really affect me, and my usual instinct is fight, not flight. It is both painful and embarrassing when someone tries to spook me, I just yell and throw punches! Also, games like the Resident Evil series aren't really my bag. I tend to gravitate towards real time strategy games, even factory or city building. The only first person games I tend to play is the Mechwarrior games. So not much jump scares in those.
it's a great remake. I do still prefer the original, for a few reasons, and I think the remake really suffers from Salazar and Saddler especially having fewer interactions with Leon and being a bit less memorable as a result. They were also just more fun as characters in the OG. I have other gripes and criticisms but nothing is ever perfect. Still one of the best remakes ever, of one of the best games ever. I'll undoubtedly continue to play both games for years to come.
Never been a fan of RE4 due to the setting. It’s good if you haven’t played the first 3 but to suddenly jump to from raccoon city to Spanish village just felt odd.
Leon from OG RE4 has the action hero attitude. RE4 Remake Leon has the "I am a tragedy survivor" attitude. Its curious how you did not mention how it was updated for MODERN AUDIENCES in relation to some of the cut dialogue (particularly the ones about flirting). Also, Krauser performance just unbearable in the remake, worse than Ada if you ask me.
OG Krauser was just a hard ass shoed in rival with a jealousy complex stemmed from a superiority complex. A basic Shadow the Hedgehog or Vegeta clone. Here we see that he is a mad man who is pissed despite the fact he is one of the most skilled soldiers in the world that he was still thrown away as collateral for a science experiment from those with more money and a higher position of "power" in the government. A pawn who survived being sacrificed on a chess board played by Elites. In Chess the most powerful piece that makes it to the end of the board is a pawn as it can be anything it wants. Krauser's whole battle with Leon takes an entirely new dynamic because of this added development. Now it isn't just a skill soldier rival/former mentor fighting Leon. It's a man who was once honorable now has been changed from an incident caused by higher ups that cost him to lose nearly everything with he himself being scarred by it. Almost the same situation Leon is now in after Raccoon City. Krauser fights Leon personally because of this inner conflict within himself as despite him wanting power to cause chaos he also wants his honor back as he hopes he is wrong that power isn't the only thing by seeing that a soldier/honorable man really can make a difference. He can't pick a side himself because he doesn't want to be betrayed again as the first cause that he fought for is no longer there. Krauser wins then it means power and getting it in underhanded means is the way of the world with honor/skill/ and Morals not meaning anything. Leon wins means that those things that I mentioned still makes a difference. As the theme of change is relevant in this game with Leon, Luis, and Krauser being the focus of it.
I didnt like Krauser at first, but I got used to it, Ada's voice on the other hand😅. At least Krauser serves a porpose, It's a good example that even if the voice doesn't fit him the performance of the actor is good.
@@energeticyellow1637 they are "playfull" with each other but cannot say they flirt. At least nowhere near the same amount as in the original (like at the end when she invites him to do some "overtime").
Been playing this game since release date and only now, 3 months later do I have the S+ rank on 3 of the 4 difficulty levels. Got my S rank on Professional (hardest difficulty) but I "cheated" since it was NG+. The remake improved a lot of the things that I didn't like about the original (which I've beaten well over 1000 times and actually did a lot of the achievements the remake has, like "no talking to the merchant" and "only use knives and pistols" back in the original version, just for fun for a new challenge) but there's a lot of new mechanics the remake has that I don't care for at all. As of now I honestly can't say which is better like I did with the RE2 remake (I don't think I'll ever play the original ever again other than for nostalgia's sake) but I'm not gonna knock it. I can see why people like the remake more. I think years of drinking has slown down my reaction times. I was 20 when the original was made, and now I'm almost 40. Videogames are NOT for older adults who's brains are slowing down.
I think the remake made Luis and Ashley better, and Ada, Krauser, Salazar and Saddler much worse. Also, that Mike death in the remake was lame in comparison to the og.
The characters in the original definitely had more charisma. The voice acting was better in the original as well (especially Ada & Krauser). Despite being an evil bastard, Saddler was pretty likeable and charming in the OG because of his back and forth banter with Leon. It felt like Leon was messing around with his old uncle lol. In the remake Saddler felt like an afterthought and I did not care about him at all (same with remake Salazar).
At least they gave a bit more backstory for Krauser because he was such a random old ally turned to bad cliché which didn't work because we never knew about their friendship before.

Me too spot on
You know Leon is a badass when he is able to parry a chainsaw with a knife
Bro you can’t do that? Level up

Leon's a chump. What badass can't use a combat knife to deflect flaming pieces of Wood and explosive barrels thrown at him by a parasitic Spider-Priest? The Merchant could probably tank them with his pinky like Goku against Trunks sword.
@@FierceDeity35 MGR is the GOAT for a reason.
A decent bayonet style knife would totally wreck a chainsaw. It would stall the motor almost immediately and probably sling the chain
You can push both triggers and square and X in every QTE and it will work. No need to think what buttons to push. They're easy af.
But yeah, I hate QTEs. I love that Spider-Man games let you take them off.
Yeah, I didn’t like Ada. Too serious.
I just don't understand why they didn't use the same actress from RE2, she did great in that game. Was she busy doing other projects?
Only hiccup I have with the game is the villains are robbed of so much personality. Both Sadler and Ramon from what clips I've found in the OG were memorable villains, Salazar being an obvnoxious rival that regularly tried to prove his superiority to Leon while Sadler was almost self aware and never lost his cool for even a second, while in the remake they barely have enough screen time to develop them.
Exactly. Salazar was constantly breaking in to talk shit. There was a great back and forth. Now Leon talks to him what? Twice?
I hate the woke censorship
"Your right hand comes off?" :) But for real, Salazar is too much of a serious dude this time. I guess they had to make it that way, considering the overall shift in tone compared to the original RE4
@@luket3452the fuck are you talking about
@Tranzisto I believe they are trying to keep it serious so they never get another re6 scenario. That said, they should have kept in the villains calling Leon throughout.

A terrific remake that sadly lost its B-Movie flavor. I happily replay it over and over, but I'll forever miss the fun I had with Salazar and Saddler calling Leon and having a few laughs.
I have to agree, remake is way too serious while they kept some of the oneliners and crazy set pieces and it feels a bit bipolar.

That is the perfect description of the voice acting that Ada got in this remake.
One of my favourites:
Salazar:....I have sent my right hand to kill you!
Leon: Your right hand comes off?
I find the original was almost kind of a tongue and cheek take on the action and horror genres
Blinded by nostalgia. Story was trash in the original.
The entire series was campy and goofy. That's been their staple.
They ruined the Leon Hunnigan ship 😢 Leon wants to clap Hunnigan cheeks goddammit! It's canon!
Now he feels like a real religious fuckhead leader.
Also, his ancestor
Adam saddler
I absolutely loved playing through this remake. I went back and played the original afterwards and once you get past the slightly wonky controls and muscle memory messing you up, it still holds up really well.
That knife breaking mechanic they've added into the remake though needs to go to the bottom of the sea in a carbon fibre submersible.
One of the only games I preordered and was genuinely excited about
I've never played an RE game. Closest I've gotten to is playing as Jill in MvC2, and I only played that game because I like Mega Man, and the Marvel Universe. I've always wanted to try RE, but I never really committed to trying it. This seems like the best time to get into the series with RE4 Remake. Great review as always!
my favorite critic analyzing my favorite game, what a treat this is.
I actually liked the new voice and this is coming from someone who thought DC wasn't replaceable.
Except in the first game. Lord, that voice was awful even by that game's standards. The only competing one is the guy who gets bitten by the giant snake ("there're terrible demons... OUCH!" [dies])
I mean he only shows up in post credit scene. Maybe they haven't chosen the actor yet.
I really miss the deep, British voice full of ham n cheese. Such a fun delivery, especially in RE5. "CHRIIIIIIIIIS!!"
cause Capcom has gotten cheaper in the new generations, they avoid unions and heavily focus their VA work to lower (cheaper) talent, typically canadian and it shows in all of their modern works, just more apparent here
In the words of Nick Fury, "well, its about damn time". I knew you had an RE4R remake review stashed away, and you didn't dissapoint.👍👍👍

As somebody who completely missed the Resident Evil train until RE7 came out I am fascinated by this original RE4 footage. They actually put so much effort into recreating the village exactly as it was with modern graphics over it.
Play it original re4 actually has a sense of fun to it.
Modern graphics? It is not like original is 8-bit or 16-bit game. There isn't that much difference.
Capcom is dead too sadly, any company who follow ESG dont deserve support.
@@LtCommanderTatoUhm, Capcom still makes excellent games as of now. Also, the new Street Fighters still have female characters in sexy attire.

The original also had dynamic diffuculty. It was pretty revolutionary at the time.
I'm currently playing the UHD Edition of the original because my rusty old computer can't handle the remake, but I will definitely play it when I get my hands on a newer PC, anyways, it's normal for me get into a "new" game when almost everyone already left it behind and are now into something else newer 😅
Glad you liked it drinker… a part of me still prefers the original but the controls certainly feel way better in the remake
Hey, that's the only RE I ever played XD
Code: Veronica is a main line game, even when it's missing a number. Originally Nemesis was a side game happening at the same time as 2 but Capcom made a deal with Sony to rebrand it as the third game. So story wise Veronica really is the third one.
The voice actress of ada brought race into it when people were saying she was awful really tells you what kind of character she is.
Probably one of my favorite games of this year. I'm already on my fourth playthrough.
After just finishing RE Village on PSVR2 I cannot express how excited I am to play this game on PSVR2 as well. Such an overall great Remake.
They were also easy since you can just push all 4 buttons same time reused in every QTE.
There's no such thing as doing quicktime events right.
I was a little disappointed on how safe the developers played it, but still enjoyable
Absolutely loved this one🤘 I’d say it might’ve even broken my top 10
_Finally._ I was starting to think you were gonna just skip this one altogether.
Blinded by nostalgia. Gameplay, pacing, story are way better than the original.
You're an artist, mate!
Oh man, thank you SO much for shining a light on how jarring it was going from RE 1, 2 and 3 set in generally down to Earth modern American zombie infested settings and suddenly being thrown into this weird time warped Euro setting with castles and parasites and antique guns
I started on RE 2 when it was practically new. I loved it and moved on to RE 3. Loved that as well. Then went back and played RE 1 just to see what I missed there, loved that also. Then RE 4 came out and while I was alright with it it really did throw me off with the setting and parasites and "rescuing the presidents daughter" and all of that
At the time I told my friends "yeah it's alright.
Love these additional gaming reviews!
Rare for someone to criticize the legitimate problems with RE4(original).
Oh, that intro made me chuckle out loud since, for me, it's resident evil 2. Great series I just grew up in a different age...
It’s going to be interesting to see what they do with a Re5 and 6 remake. Hopefully making them games good.
Zombies be like the CIA. Always trying to kill a Kennedy.
Even Drinker noticed the huge mark left by Sally Cahill with Ada.
It surely was an ESG move to use Gao since Capcom is down with the woke money, sadly
RE4 was my first complete Resident Evil experience, since when I was a kid I got frustrated with and gave up on the constant camera angle changes of the earlier games. I played through this one four times on my Gamecube, and would be more than happy to play it again on my Xbox series X.
Since the crowbcat comparison on RUclips I don't think it's a perfect remake
I very much enjoyed it and it's still one of my favorite games of all time. I just couldn't help missing the countless sections of the game they removed for this version and didn't really add anything to replace it.
Love the original, but the remake is better for it (in my opinion). The pacing and difficulty curve are so smooth; it's probably the best paced I've played yet.
Many of the previously cut content are now available in the Separate Ways DLC.
Got a selection of good things on sale, stranger!
Sir, your IQ is blowing the curve for this comment section. I'm going to have to ask you to leave to before you start upsetting the other viewers.
Nice work 🎆✨
I dunno Drinker...the camp it had in the original that they DID tone down a bit gave it something of a lovable weirdness.
I loved Resident evil 4 but I am more excited about Resident evil 5. I hope they improve on it and make it a scarier remake.
Playing through it now. It’s awesome this is one I didn’t play when it was released.
First time I ever played this was on the quest. Such a cool game. I can't wait until the VR version for the remake is available.
Resident Evil 4 VR was a great time, almost worth getting a VR Headset just for that game itself.
This was such a damn good game and it raised the bar in how remakes should be handled. I completely agree with you about Ada's VA, no idea why they couldn't just bring back the one from RE2.
Re2 voice actress joined a union apparently.Capcom doesn't use union actors apparently
Union issues, the VA wanted the role, but the union red taped her on this issue
Most likely wage issue & i think they just have to do with anybody available THEN, so they use the actor from welcome to raccoon city ada, and she bombed it
We'll see if RE2R Ada VA can come back for the DLC
capcom can get away with this because ada's script is minimal for main story, not so much when they DLC dedicated to her
REmake and Re2r are still better but this was very good
Come on Drinker. With all that youtube cash you need to update your set up man. 1080p videos just ain't cutting it man. Regardless excellent review 👏
I love the humor of the old one so much more too. The pervy jokes always made laugh and stuff like "Where'd everybody go? Bingo?"
Thats called being blinddd by nostalgia. The OG re 4 is made for casuals. Handholding you like a toddler.
I've never played this game, I'm saving for a midrange portable machine and this is one of the titles I'm looking forward to playing in it.
I'm one of those stubborn fans who does not like the direction resident Evil 4 brought the franchise into, not that I hated the game, but a disappointed me at first of a while for it to grow on me
So as such I wasn't actually all that excited about this remake, one because it's not one of my favorite games in the franchise, and two because I thought the original still held up well enough that it didn't really need a remake. It's definitely a little clunky and shows its age but it doesn't take that long to get used to it and the game itself is still solid
But they managed to make me absolutely love this game, and it's what the original should have been. They added just enough horror back into it so that the whole thing doesn't just feel like schlocky action, and it takes itself a bit more seriously
I know some people think the goofy dialogue is part of the charm of the original but I always thought it felt really out of place in the franchise, because despite it being over the top it did always take itself seriously
Hey! Survivor was good. I enjoyed it at least and it was the first first person resident evil game made. If anything thst game deserves a remake.
Hell yeah! A game review! I thought he might have dropped this game.

Forgot to mention the VA for ada wong freaked out over the backlash she called fans of ada wong racist
they deserved it for such shitty behaviour. imagine being an obnoxious piece of shit that you have to harass someone because you didn’t like their voice acting. grow up
Story aside, which I never cared for in the original anyways, the only thing I don't like in the remake is the camera.
About time
Fucking legendary, love hearing you talk about video games.
This was quite a good remake 👍
100% on Ada's VA. I am glad that i play the game in Japanese dub for that 😬
it's a great remake.
Great review! Loved the way characters were fleshed out, gameplay is improved, and the overall feel is better
Never been a fan of RE4 due to the setting. It’s good if you haven’t played the first 3 but to suddenly jump to from raccoon city to Spanish village just felt odd.
original resident evil 4 is maybe the best resident evil game ever ... i had so much fun playing it years ago.
@@mysteryace2129 I was referring to the voice performance of the new Krauser. The character background might make more sense in the remake.
I didnt like Krauser at first, but I got used to it, Ada's voice on the other hand😅. At least Krauser serves a porpose, It's a good example that even if the voice doesn't fit him the performance of the actor is good.
"particularly the ones about flirting"
Leon and Ashley flirt with each other all the time in this game though?
