    A solid list! Yep, if price was not an option, I’d definitely pick up the R3. Also, the R6 mk II does look promising….I just sold off my R6 before I knew anything about it. But I’m gonna gamble and pick one up. Hope to one day pair it with a C70.

      Thanks for the comment Edward! It's pretty easy to make the decision when price isn't an object! Lol! I recently paired an R7 with my Canon C70 and like the way those two played together, BUT, there are definitely some times I miss having a Full Frame to work with... I think the R6 mkII is a pretty solid gamble!

      Great Idea! Thanks for commenting, I'll get that one added to my list! We're living in an incredible time to be camera operators. There is all kinds of competition in the camera market putting out some really incredible tools for us to use. Now the problem is, which one is the right one! :) Lol thanks for joining in the conversation!

    Sick video Troy! No love for the R5C? Haha R3 stills beats it for hybrid use but other than the battery life issue it’s a beast of a camera.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад

      Ayy thanks Brandon! I appreciate the compliment! :) I definitely have love for the R5C! It can often be found lurking in the back of my mind actually. Lol!
      I'm on a personal mission towards a more "minimalist" lifestyle and as a result I'm trying to be very intentional about not "rigging" cameras out when I can avoid it. That's not the R5C's fault but more of an insight into my biases on putting this list together! The fewer cables/components/connections the better in my book!
      Have you found a battery solution that works well for you? I think you're right that it's an absolute UNIT of a camera and I'd love to find a way to make it work in my production workflow! (I do often long for a full-frame B Cam to my C70 instead of my S35 R7)
      Thanks again for joining the conversation! Pumped to have you here ;)

      @@TroyMairs Haha I totally get you! It all depends on how you shoot and what you shoot. I have contemplated trading in my R5C for the R3 many times but holding myself back because I'm hoping Canon updates the R5C with C-log 2. As it is technically a Canon Cinema Camera I believe it has a much higher chance of getting that update over any other Canon mirrorless camera. Also, the FX3 getting new features with updates gives Canon more of a reason to do the same to stay competitive.
      I am also an C70 owner so I find the R5C to be the "almost" perfect B cam. If I really need them to match and I don't need the extra dynamic range I just shot them both in C-log 3 and the R5C in Super 35 mode.
      As for a battery solution I have put together the same build as "cammackey". He put up an R5C rig build video, you should check it out. I wouldn't recommend it if you're trying to stay more minimal though. It is a clean setup and I love how fast you can take it apart or put it together.
      If somehow Canon fixes the battery issue and gives it C-log 2, this camera would be hands down the best hybrid camera on the market. I would even choose it over the R3 at that point.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад

      @Brandon Brodie I think you hit the nail on the head! CLog2 would be a great (and probably simple) update that would be warmly welcomed! I've dropped my C70 into Clog3 now as a default to better match the R7 I'm currently using as a B Cam. Which is probably fine, but its a bummer to have to grade "down" to match a lower quality image...
      If we can get Clog2 and a usable internal battery solution, hands down that camera takes the number 1 spot :)

      R5 C owner here. There's actually one good way to improve battery life without having to rig it up which is getting the battery grip. With the BG-R10 and two LP-E6NH batteries you hack from 40 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. I think that, by using two batteries at once, the camera manages to squeeze a little bit more - which happens if you use the photo mode only.
      Drawbacks are that are not a really great gamma of cage options if you need to rig it up with the battery grip. SmallRig and Kondor Blue both launched one option back when the R5 and R6 were launched, but that was it, and both cages plain sucked as well. But this would not be an issue if you're trying to be minimalist in any way.
      As for the C Log 2, the camera is under the Cinema EOS line up, but it still uses the EOS R line up technology, such as sensor and processor. While it's great to see Canon trying to unify and streamline their R&D, I'm pretty sure from all the technical tests that I've seen that the R5 C is not able to squeeze more info from DR, especially at noise floor levels, so adding C Log 2 wouldn't make any difference.

      @brandonbrodie4547 Год назад

      @@BrunoMassao Thanks man! Yeah, will definitely have to pick up a battery grip in the future. For now the V-mount rig works pretty well.

    I have been a canon shooter for 11 years shooting both phto and video. I have a lot of EF glass I am looking to upgrade my gear and was wondering if in April if you would recommend switching to Sony (a7iv) or stay canon (r5/r6ii) thank you for this amazing content

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment! Great question! "Should I switch" is a question that plagues most every creator, myself included! I think many of usl fall victim to the "grass is greener" mentality.
      You're in a great position though. You can't go wrong with either decision you make! I would say if you're prioritizing video, the Sony line of mirrorless camera might be you route. If it is photo, then I'd go for the Canon (R6ii or maybe wait for an R5ii).

    No mention of the Nikon Z9?!

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад +1

      That is a VERY valid question! I was thinking about the Z9 a bit during the edit of this video. If I had to justify why I failed to mention it, I'd look towards the idea of it leaning heavy on the photo side (which I think is by design). I might try to argue the tilt-only screen and use of contrast-based af BUT I don't think those are deal-breakers by any stretch.
      The real truth of the matter is likely a lackluster experience I had with Nikon cameras in the past so I'm a bit biased and as a result that influences my thought process today!
      For what it's worth, I do think its an incredible camera and like I mentioned at the beginning of the video, there are a TON of really impressive tools out there for us to utilize!
      Thanks for jumping in the comments! Glad to have you here :)

      @@TroyMairs thank you for the response, great video by the way. It’s interesting that they R3 is number one when I believe that camera leans more towards the photo side. But I would believe that the Z9 is just as much as a hybrid as a R3 especially since it shoots 8K60 with no crop. I own one, so I’m speaking from that standpoint. In regards to your prior experience with Nikon cameras, I can understand where you’re coming from. As far as the auto focus goes I understand however, the hybrid capabilities have been there in the Z6 from the beginning. The tilt and flip screen thing I understand Vloggers love that; it doesn’t matter to me, but I understand. Lol.

      Thank you for the response and I appreciate the insight! You make a lot of really good points here! I'm don't think I gave the Z9 enough consideration on the first go around, I do think it deserves a spot on the list somewhere.

    Canon R5c. It Kills. The battery and micro HDMI and very low hurdles. The image, ease of use, codecs and 2 operating systems crush.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад +1

      The separate operating systems was a GENIUS idea! I really dislike using a hybrid camera that doesn’t have a shutter angle option and that helps to solve that
      I did finally see a rig the other day for an R5c that ran off Vmount that I really liked. I’ve personally gone wayyy to far down the rabbit hole of rigging gear and I’m actively trying to avoid that. (Hence my distaste for a required external power source)
      Outside of that, you’re right on! The camera crushes🔥 I think we’re closer than ever to a “perfect” camera!

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад +1

      Hey thanks for asking! I think you’re right on! It’s certainly an incredible camera (as many are!) So to try and categorize them is tough, and specific to this list I think it is going to lean a bit far towards the photo side to be the ultimate hybrid. An incredible tool nonetheless though! We’re living in a pretty incredible time as creators. It keeps things exciting!

      @@TroyMairs Hey can you publish a comparison of the R5 and a7R V? I'm really having a hard time deciding. My main criteria is photography but I want to have great video capabilities too. A 4k 120fps option would be really better. Anyway thanks for replying!!
      (maybe give me a hint on which camera to pick 🙂)

      Hey also I just found out heat with the release of firmware v1.6 the recording limits are gone and things are good now. So it's usable now??

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад

      Fortunately, you can't go too wrong with either option! :) I think that both camera bodies (R5 and A7r5) would suit you well if you lean a little bit more towards the photo side but still want solid video performance. The overheating does seem to be much less of an issue as of the latest firmware update for the R5, the camera will get quite warm yet, but it shouldn't won't shut down on you!
      I think it would be worth taking in to consideration what lenses you want to invest in as well! I LOVE the RF lenses, but they are still quite expensive and there are a few holes that haven't been filled yet because it is a newer mount. That said, I think the future is bright for RF Glass and that's why I personally chose to go with Canon.
      Thanks for joining the conversation Sharmin!

    The Fx3???

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Год назад +2

      Love a good FX3! :) In my opinion the needle swings a bit heavy towards the video side and as a result the photo side loses out. So in the context of the best _hybrid_ camera, I personally don't think it is there, but in another video where I was exploring the Top 5 video-first cameras, it would certainly make the list!
