Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

NL: "we have no burnout issues"
Coldcelia with 1 burnout about to die: "Am I a joke to you?"
Thank you for the daily blessed pog Egg
"Although we did just lose Coldcelia to what I have to assume is a sweep"
I was sooo ready to watch NL throw another run by not understanding Burnout,
Bruh i was so worried that would cost him the run but sacred wicks came thru
@@samueldavidwiseman3350 Less of not understanding, and more of a not being focused situation
i lost it at that statement
'Although we did just lose coldcaelia to what I have to assume is a sweep'
this egg
Man
I cry every time
imagine what will happen when our egg learns to read. brings tear to me eye.
37:10
"We got no burnout issue"
He says moments before Coldcaelia dies to burnout
“we have no burnout problems” *unit dies to burnout* “I think that was sweep”
11:47 This Egg really STILL thinks that bounty stalker is endless by default.
I love that in NL's dictionary, "enemy", "champion", and "unit" are completely synonymous and interchangable 😂
Pog on you crazy diamond!
Don't forget 'boss'
Is that a JoJo's reference!
This made me LOL hard thanks :D
By the end, this man's deck was so POG that every enemy was dazed as soon as they enter.
Regarding deck strategy as a whole, I think NL has hit a few brick walls in mindset:
1) Spell removal thins the deck way more than unit removal, particularly in long fights where you cycle your deck multiple times. So removing all the dregs was kind of a shot in the foot since you can always "consume" them for free during any given fight. In the meantime Titan's Gratitudes where just there existing for no reason since upfront damage wasn't really an issue and there were no discard synergies.
2) Draw relic thins your deck about 4/5 times more than removing one card, since you draw one extra card per turn. So you could draw a 30 card deck in the same amount of turns you would otherwise draw a 25 card deck. Of course you need the energy to play said cards, but in this case he invested in capacity just to yeet so many units that he could barely even fill 2 floors
3) Reforming is usually better (albeit more expensive) than applying burnout. Since you apply burnout and buff at the same time. Plus, you can reposition your floor on the fly when you place the units again.
Obviously none of it mattered, but these issues also manifest in losing runs where he cant brute force everything with the burnout champ
When he skipped the dup of the reform card I almost pulled my hair
The removal of spells over champions is something i noticed early on but still have to wrap my egg brain around.
Has NL ever taken the draw reward? I can't remember a single time
@@cptKamina He even said something like "I'll take capacity 90% of the time" when he took it. I feel like that did him literally nothing in this run.
@@cptKamina he did literally once
And finally the Melted come to the rescue. Also looking at Nl`s book: Only Melted have all wins in all clan-combination.
The melted champ is really, really strong. In my experience he's the best due to consistently being able to carry early and with support late game.
The Stygian Guard might be better, since all three champion options are good and can be built upon. But NL struggles with them, though I hope it clicks one day.
@@123mickymouse123 I, too, struggle with makin the Stygian champion useful. Any tips you could share?
@@AdrianVM19 Depends on what you are offered. Spell weakness and Frostbite are both able to kill bosses without too much issue, but have less than 9 health if memory serves which makes them very vulnerable. The cost reduction one is great if you have good card draw, and works wonders with incant, but I would personally not take more than one or two levels in it.
I personally like pairing them with Awoken, but there are other pairings probably that are great. Still, a single "Preserved thorns" with consume removed can make for some quite silly Stygian runs haha. If you get it with urn or the spikes upgrade you are going to have loads of fun.
Edit: It's worth noting that Stygian do lack in targeted removal, due to incant, which is why pairing it with for example Awoken or Hellborne might be a good idea.
I'll admit, I slept on Monster Train when the videos first started coming out, but now it's the video I look forward to most every day.
Literally screamed when he gave multistrike to big sludge and not coldcaelia
Edit: and then he doesn't give coldcaelia burnout when he needed to...
The man judges the value of a unit by the size of it's sprite. The Big Sludge is big, therefore must be much better (who cares that it deals less than 20 damage through half the game the way he plays it)
Big Sludge with Multistrike is able to pog out of control if you have the right deck.
@@gman6765 for sure, but THAT wasn't the right deck.
@@gman6765 IF that's a big humongous IF right there.
The burnout increase lady goes well with the burnout champion, specially if you also have multistrike draffs btw.
All Draff have multistrike. So.
39 minutes ? This must be a speedrun !
It was a speedrun ! :O
NL, Lady of the reformed will keep giving your champion mor and more burnout as long as she lives. Lovin’ this monster train content, brother
I really thought that NL gonna throw it after 37:07, glad that I'm wrong.
And yes, she died to burnout, not sweep
"We got no burnout issues". Meanwhile, in the first floor of the train of monsters...
Early release, means a blessed RUclips algorithm. I'm pogged out of my mind
Literally every time I see "Big Sludge" it just makes me so unbelievably happy and I can't explain why.
Cuz he’s a big boi
Is it maybe the hat or the way he carries himself. Oh Lord he be coming
Upgraded slime boss
"Waxen spike" the X damage card for the whole floor adds Burnout to ALL UNITS which in normal case means they all die in a single turn if they dont already have burnout.
Your Coldselia sweep unit literally was burning out 3 turns and you had the heal card with holdover and each turn you did not see her burnout picture ticking down... until she burned out at boss
“We don’t want our burnout units to stay alive.” Says the man who duplicated Purifying Cleanse
This day could not be more blessed and it's only 11 am.... thank you for the early pogs brother
Let me blow your mind brother, these are posted at the same time daily
I pogged all over myself this morning

Dregs, of all starting cards are probably the ones you want to remove the least. They take up 1 capacity for 2 turns and die. While others like torches are just dead draw most of the time.
This was almost a Greek Tragedy, The Hubris of Ryan Gary Letourneau
Egg missing Burnout on Coldcaelia for 2 straight fights was the highlight
Everytime the Recktor reforms he gains one more row of abs. What an absolute Thad
Lady of the reformed is amazing with burnout champion!
NL: spends the whole first 12 minutes complaining that his champion keeps dying. Then turns down lady of the reformed. "We don't want our reform units to stay alive"
Love you NL!
Bro I hated that part like wtf u said u need burnout and she gives burnout without using a card win win
Hardened by boiling La Croix in the mines of Issac, an oblong hero emerges unsoldered, embedded with the strength of a-thousand Golden Bois. Though faced with every shape of heathen which writhe within the depths of Andor Londo our foul-laid champion persists through every challenge ever salt free! Trenches of resin impede the shelled warrior but despite this finding himself un-begrudging and steadfast! Fight on Galient Egg! FIGHT ON! Breach the covenants of rage and despair which shackle the limitations of this dismal landscape! Beat back the endless waves of green demons and Josh-Interruptions with severe gusto!!
I suspect NL loves the name "Big Sludge" just about as much as I do
beeeeg sludgey
Good plays, fun to watch, only one mistake that made me hurt inside (coldcilia burning out do to wax spike). Overall a very pogged episode
The Remnant Railspike applies burnout, even to units that don't currently have it. That's why Coldcaelia died.
Burnout Rector Flicker carry is good and all, but I still fear NL is playing too quickly and it will matter when not playing an OP champ.
Regardless, good job NL, moving up those covenant ranks.
I've never seen someone so aggressively avoid the best plays. It's truly harrowing.
My dude, the matches aren't timed, take your time and make more thoughtful decisions.
Cold Sweeper dying from burnout
"We have no burnout issues"
Such a great episode with such a devastating almost-throw right at the end. Glad it worked out.
The Boss: "Candles? Pathetic."
NL: "That's where you're wrong. You will now be melted."
/// Man it feels good to see the pogs roll in. Stygian grinds my gears, but anything else...truly wonderful. Good show.
Big Sludge is evolving!
It evolved into LARGE SLUDGE
Big Sludge is my favorite. Pop an Endless Remnant Host in front of him every turn. That set-up plus a harvest Rector Flicker decked out with Harvest got me like 650+ HP at one point. Mega tank. Was also slapping a bunch of that Razorsharp Edge buff down on him. Was great.
The melting cannot be stopped. He even misplayed the final boss and they still carried. Poor coldcilia she burned out due to NL not reading again.
Burnout boy + reform = easy win POGGERS
Great run to get out of the rut NL! Always pogged out of my mind with the monster train series!
Love that clarity of mind today! Knew exactly what you wanted on each floor and just kept ignoring every pack coming you way! Taking the rail spike nearly put you in hot water more than once lol.
37:09 "Weve got no burnout issues" as his unit dies from burnout. I dont think Ryan realised his x-cost card applied burnout.
Big Chungus, I mean big wax. Wait...
37:25 If coldcelia has burnout 1, champion has burnout 20, and shark has burnout 1, and you have 2 cards to provide burnout? Just give 1 burnout to coldcelia, and 1 to shark boy. Nice and simple, no need to galaxy brain yourself. Sometimes pro plays aren't incomprehensible, sometimes they're just very simple.
NL got a 72.4% Daze proc on new units in that final fight.
Lucky egg.
Just unlocked covenant 25 3 days ago. Love that the game gets progressively more challenging while allowing you to preserve the ability to just mess around on lower difficulty runs.
37:11 we got no burnout issues
\*loses important unit to burnout right away*
NL and I BOTH said Big Sludge aloud. It’s written. He’s the gamer lord we’ve always needed.
And in one day , all faith had been restored in the egg .
God damn. So many descisions that I thought would come back to haunt you, but instead an utterly dominant run
nobody:
absolutely nobody:
NL: hums in the hall of the mountain king randomly.
Some super goofy plays by NL, but he drafted an incredible deck. Super well done. Most of the fights the enemy didn't even stand a chance.
That's one way to get stygian wins, just ally it with melted. Good run NL
Not so obvious tip: Your last unit draft will always be the path after Daedalus. After that, you don't get any more units (except the small kind that come with spell choices, totems/draffs/imps etc)
NL to Melting Remnants: Oh dear, Oh dear. Gorgeous.
NL to Stygian: You fucking donkey.
a burnout deck and he skips lady of the house
"I would not take the skips as a sign that I lost it" - Egg, about to speedrun monster train again
He called the train steward a champion. Train steward best card in NL ranks every Monster Train card confirmed.
You almost got so rekt though. Coldcaelia burned out because you never acknowledged the fact that Waxen Spike gives her Burnout and that was almost enough to throw the run. Fortunately, you got your champion back with Sacred Wicks.
I'm 27 minutes in and he's talking about how our boy Big Sludge isn't doing well, but he's not putting him on the lower floors where enemies can kill Dregs for him.
Exactly. Big Sludge and a ton of dregs in front of him at the bottom floor is how he's played. Reform/Endless to keep the fodder rolling.
Nice, you broke the streak! I enjoyed this one: you were very vocal about why you do or do not do things. Great content, keep them coming!
NL with the victory!! Great run! Makes me very happy to see you bring home the dub after a tough week.
Reactor Flicker is too pogged. He literally carried this run through sheer pogness with all the mistakes. Your pog spree will be fairly limited without him. Please consider the following for pogging later. (I'm Pogging out on my alt work account so here's some details)
Not taking the reform cards that let you choose *who* to reform with +10 extra attack when you're a burnout deck. WIthout the burnout relic you would have been in a less pog place.
Putting bigsludge in noncombat floors (You could have just used your hero to tank with the heals + reforms instead of sentry, or play sentry instead of cold as sentry can aoe the backline with frostbite)
You skipped lady of the house who is a fantastic tank for burnout or any reformed unit.
You should be placing an expendable unit INFRONT of a Good unit when you have Molded Bracers so the GOOD unit gets the +5 armor instead of the second dreg you slap down who dies anyway.
With a deck as thin as yours permafrost is always a good choice for this as you can save a card (Like reform).
Bonus - You want to save a slot on your sweep unit for quick. This greatly reduces backline damage on your tank. Not required but always to consider.
And you lost your sweep unit on the last fight due to burnout and not sweep as no enemies in that variant can sweep.
Multi strike plus quick seems decent for cold Celia.
NL, I know you won this run, but Coldcelia literally died to burnout as you said "we don't have any burnout problems" and used the spell for an incant. That's the kind of stuff that can lose you runs
I need more Monster Train! This is great! You lost Coldcelia because she burned out 37:25
Yesss. I called it on yesterday's video that a win was forthcoming. Was a bit worried when I saw the video length, but NL has pogged out of control on this one. Keep it up, brother, let's goooo
11 am? My lunch was early at work today. Thank goodness I could POG some morsels. #EggBlessed
He didn’t even realize it was his fault!
"You're NAHT an emberdrain unit"
Congrats on your win! We all knew that you would make it : )
Egg, love the series. Just take your time and mouse over the icons on your own units form time to time. It's easy to miss, but the X card gives all friendly units on your floor burnout. You lost your sweep unit twice due to that burnout. Still great game and well deserved victory.
37:42 *applying flash freeze to a unit which is already dying* "that doesn't move things as much as I thought"
I think the reason NL has the best luck with melting is because accidentally killing friendly units works in his favor
35:50 Things suddenly get spicy. Egg plays his "discard a random card" card *first* for no reason but lucks out without noticing, and apparently also doesn't notice he has given both his tank and sweeper burnout from the spike (thank goodness he gets extra burnout from the relic or this would be even worse!) and so wastes his extra burnouts on his champ and healing siren. Brain is fully disengaged from play.
This was the greatest run I've ever seen.
By the way, your sniper had a medkit.
Idk why watching NL try to visualize where his coldcaelia would go was so funny.
THE REDEMPTION ARC STARTS NOW
I swore to myself if you got to episode 50, I'd buy this game. Loving it so far.
The skips are not bad, it actually means you have improved as a thinner more consistent deck will always be better, you don't need to take every unit/card offered, just the ones you would want to play every turn.
Tip: don't spend 300 gold to remove 2 dregs, could have been almost 2 artifacts on the next shop.
Great Coldcaelia pick, she is an awesome unit, will kill any floor as long as you have a tank, duplicating her could have been spicy but amazing lol (also should have given her the multi-strike) this would have been 12 frostbite every turn on all units.
Coldcaelia kept dying to you giving her burnout and forgetting she had burnout and dies.
Taking capacity again would have been nice as you had zero energy problems.
How can one man tunnelvision so hard...love it
Must be a speedrun...
EDIT: ACTUAL SPEEDRUN POGGERS
Good run NL, no wait, AMAZING run!!! That was entertaining.
My man still missing like half the interactions, and still forgets how burnout works. But melting strong so its fine.
So much wasted armor on the BIG SLUDGE floor...
Early trip to Pog City? I'm not mad
Hey NL if you want big sludge to really pop in the future try putting him on the same floor as your sweep units so he can pog out on harvesting enemy support units
The Permafrost relic at the start is pretty good for both of your factions.
The discard and offering spells are better when you can control them better (and have extra cards padding your hand, as Permafrosted cards are like extra draw , as opposed to Holderover that consumes your draw.
Your Reform cards work better when you can control when to play them.
That relic in general is just great, the main downside is that it makes uncontrolled discard cards worse as you end up discarding your frozen cards or having nothing to freeze. I'd have still easily taken the gold relic though, it's just extremely good.
Putting the Paraffin Enforcer behind the Burnout Rector is the best thing you could have done. Especially with Multistrike. He's just a passive turn by turn buff. Plus capacity with a Lady in front. Game over.
My man also skips Resin Removal for the 97th time on the Sap boss. Lol
Let’s go rectal flicker! I have a good feeling about this run. Candles are your best boys 100%
The comments are literally just "LionBlind"
I fucking love Big Sludge and his Little Hat.
My dude, the spike adds burnout 😬🤦🏻 “we have no burnout issues”. Unit dies to burnout the turn after and thinks it died to sweep 🙃
Blessed day with the monster train pogs!
Well done NL,
It was a really nice run.
Congrats NL! Keep Poggin'!
Ladies and gentlemen, behold our egg at peak beard.
IT WAS ACTUALLY A SPEEDRUN LETS GOHHH
Big sludge was better on the bottom floor behind your champion I think. Not that it mattered.
Nice video egg, thanks!
My guy... Lady of the Reformed is to tank for Wrecktor Badass. Every time she gets hit, you stack up burnout on him. Plus, she got a big booty ( high hp ). She's a dope frontline.
A RITA REPULSA QUOTE TO COME BACK! FINALLY! Good job NL!
