Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:
Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deck building game with a twist. Set on a train to hell, you’ll use tactical decision making to defend multiple vertical battlegrounds. With real time competitive multiplayer and endless replayability, Monster Train is always on time.
Big shoutout to whoever successfully taught Egg that the Sentient needs to be the tank.
I love my drinking game of "every time he forgets about top floor daze"
Can't blame him tho i do the same thing everytime
So you're already dead 10 minutes in?
It's a constant struggle for me too, hardest thing to wrap my head around for C10+
I'm on C19 and I still forget about top floor Daze like two thirds of the time.
Enemies having more HP and damaged eh things costing more eh adding a new mechanic for me to remember fucking most bullshit crap game I hope the devs fuckin- I mean eh...
I'm glad NL is trying other upgrades and builds
At least he said himself that he was underestimating spikes. I was astonished at how he always rolled Awoken when he randomed and never chose spike champ, he's so good.
Today's public service announcement: Units are not available on the map later in the run and you rarely get them from card rewards late in the run either. If you are going to be short on units, you need to solve that early.
I have to say. The golden cards design is beyond genius. It accomplishes so much with so little effort:
- It appeals to the completionist side of the brain by default so you tend to pick those cards
- Since you only get the golden on a win, you're bound to see the card in a better light for the next time since you associate it with a victory (to which the card supposedly contributed)
- This in turn makes you perhaps understand a whack card you'd never pick otherwise. I mean, just think slay the spire and all those weird as all colorless rares.
- This in turn teaches you how to use different cards for different builds/situations
Jeez I'm impressed.
(algorithm/pogs)
For me it's a handicap that when playing I see a card that I don't have golden and I'm like. I'm pretty strong I can pick it up without ruining the deck.
It's honestly one of the most subtle yet best features MT has compared to other deck builders.
If "golden cards appear less often" isn't a covenant modifier (I'm only up to like 13 so far), it should be.
Granted you could just master all the cards on lower covenants first to cheese it, and it'd have to be subtle so you don't get offered nothing but garbage cards you've never taken because they're awful, but being nudged out of your comfort zone in the higher difficulties would be a fun challenge.
@@gimmecat6251 nah, I don't think it's a good covenant modifier (or a mutator either) because you can golden cards, but you can't ungolden them. If you wanna get nudged out of your comfort zone, just go completionist and never skip an ungilded card yourself :P
Did you know if you upgrade the restoration detonation with +10 magic power it heals 20 and hits for 100? If you did that would be very upsetting
In 7 years of watching, this is the first time I’m listening with headphones and NL’s voice is... wow
Silky smooth
It has only gotten better over time...Buttery Egg
Ekklo.Strange
Reverse puberty? The chicken has gone back to the yolk.
@@Ekklo Mmmmmm buttery eggs
Welcome to the inner circle. This guy got me through hour long bus rides all throughout university. Pretty wonderful.
The title is me every time NL sorta kinda discovers a playstyle maybe.
Sentient as frontline? Guess I can start looking for a replacement gourd...
Too many pogs? Gotta get a bigger gourd my dude.
"Hellhorned is more universally aplicable"
No armor, no imps, no summons.
RIP
Tbh... that was just very shitty luck
NL trying a new strat on his champion? Consider me POGGED
Two upgrades with a different upgrade in the middle? OKAY
spreading spores is so strong with a cost reduction and either double stack or holdover
Quick reminder explosive detonation does 50 damage if it gets the full heal off. There was at least one time in the final fight you used it to deal 3 to something that was already dying which led to a high HP unit reaching the pyre next turn.
NL: The Thorned Hollow is the entire backbone of my run.
Also NL: It's not worth upgrading my units, lets go for spells.
nothing much useful could be added to the thorned hollow via unit upgrades, tho. That beast benefits from spells healing it more than any upgrade ever would.
@@Jonjon13Jonjon13 it having more damage or health would help with stopping enemy units from doing dmg to pyre/ surviving till he can set up. Plus upgrading his other units, would have meant he would do more dmg to enemy units... also if he didnt yeet so many units out, even just two trainstewards he would have done more dmg on the first row.
fight 7: ive got it, we go all in on spiking up thorned hollow and it works so well
fight 8: 16 spikes should be good were going wide bois
When he said the tank is a tank it made my heart soar. Great job
"You're DAZED!!" Classic NL
First choice of the game, and I'm at odds with the man. The extra stacks of burnout apply on units as they are as well, making Draff burnout 4 instead of 1 from the start
It would have meant that the quick unit survived the daze too, which would have saved NL from an early loss, even with his incredibly cursed start. Admittedly the wording could be better on that relic, as the way it is now makes it seem like it's just extra stacks when you add extra stacks.
@@SpyCactus That's how I always assumed it worked. The wording explicitly doesn't include creatures that already have burnout since it's not "applied".
@@ingeniousclown units that start with armor, burnout, spikes, ect consistent count that as application for the purposes of relics
@@ingeniousclown woah, your here, I didn't expect that. I am big fan of your channel and I think you're one of the most underrated youtubers out there.
I love the monster train series !
FYI if Transcendimp copies a Hollow's summon effect, the imp gains the extra max HP, not the hollow.
Thank you so much for picking draw and spikes for once, loving the change up!
You see how rejv 1 does 15 dmg, but then spikes does 10 dmg to every unit on the floor, kills all supports without armor, or even with armor with more spike buffs. :D
Yeah you really need to start playing a unit on the top floor to get around the daze even if it's a dreg... lost out on 150 gold which is a lot early.
Regen is also so much stronger than actual heal, it's like reverse poison, stack 20 regen and your champion is impossible to kill.
Regen+remove consume+holdover or doublestack is op op.
Lady of reformed is best on the bottom floor so she can take some hits before the burnout, then 2nd floor can clean up anything else.
Btw there is a melting unit which brings back another unit with +40 dmg (often better than any awoken unit including animus) which can be abused so much if you try get it early, let your strongest unit/champion die on the first turn and put this return unit behind to instantly bring it back, you now have a strong+40 dmg unit for the next turn. Endless or molded makes this even crazier, hundreds of damage with just 2 cards.
Me "The Sentient is the tank because its literally holding two shields.""
Ryab " The Sentient is the tank because it does no damage."
Okay. I mean, I guess thats true :P
This is the only series where I don't need to be reminded to like, I just do it instantly because it POGS me UP
I'm a simple man - someone writes POG, I heart
@@Northernlion my day has been blessed
NL: *plays usefull spells on bottom*
NL: ’I think our pyre will DIE’
NL: *plays MORE usefull spell on bottom*
NL: ’And there’s nothing we can do about it’
Me: *Intense eye rolling*
Gold Baby appears. "There's nothing we can do about that." Holding 4 cards that do damage, 2 being 0 cost. Really? Nothing? Really?
I mean if there's nothing you can do about it why does it matter where you play your cards
He still would have died if he played them up top. There was literally nothing he could do about it.
Great run! Glad to see you taking other Champion abilities and playing around with different mechanics. Keep the pogs coming, Eggman, my gourd can take it I promise.
A good lesson for watchers. Most waves of the final boss have units with around 170 hp that you gotta kill fast. 2 of them as well. So you gotta have DPS. No matter what. Aim to kill them in only 2 levels of the train. Level 3 should just be a backup. If you don’t have that kind of dps you will die like NL did. Also a quick sweeper with at least 10 damage to kill the back row will make your life a ton easier.
You just can't rely on spikes against the cleanse boss. If he had been going up against either of the other seraphs, I think he would have been fine.
Yeah you pretty much just have to dedicate one floor for a super spiker(last floor works well) for boss killing and finishing off slack, while the other floors are dedicated wave sweepers.
@@valharikgaming4185 I have beaten him with exactly the same setup, but I literally bought artifact for 3rd upgrade slot for spells just to reduce spreading spores cost to 0 (it had -1 and doublestack)
Awoken spike build has won me prob 20 runs. It is SUPER strong. Its really fun to mess with when you have umbra/stygian
Possibly the best-played Monster Train episode to date. LOVING the last few episodes and glad you're having fun with it :-)
The biggest thing you could've done to prevent that outcome was definitely to plan around the final boss from the start of the game and avoid a build that gets countered. But still a fun episode for sure.
So glad he did a spike-focus run! That's what I sort of always go for when I run Awoken and the one thing that I always look for and NL was missing in this run is a way to root enemies! I've had a successful run be completely reliant on rooting enemies because my units would always survive everything but they couldn't deal enough damage to stop the flood of enemies towards the Pyre room....
Draw as a first upgrade pick for your champion is often bad unless you can get carried by some really powerful starting spells. You often can't afford to take it on high cov because the first bosses can just kill you before you can utilize the draw well enough.
I am sorry, I may have had a bad day but I feel like giving many tips. Burnout units, yes, you play them they burn out and if you do not have means to bring them back it is over for them. But, you do not have an infinite capacity either so burn out those minions to kill as many enemies and save damage to your stewards and champion so later on, you can play your other units in your free floors. Or if you prefer their damage output do the opposite. Or if you, in a stroke of genius realize it, do both! They use 1 capacity, stewards use 2. You can play 2 stewards and 1 burnout unit. They burn out, you replace them! Do not play them on empty floors except for the one that they get dazed. That is all, thanks for reading this post and make sure to note it for the future as you have done so far with all my other tips : )
Very happy NL is branching out. I think he's seen how strong the Thorned Hollow is, now if only he had upgraded it once might have moved the needle enough.
*Slaps elbow with index and middle finger.* Injects Monster Train series straight into my veins. In all serious I feel like an addict waiting for the video to load everyday. Thanks for the series NL!
the almost-win is not what we should take away from this one.
NL has finally found a place for the Train Stewards in his heart. I mean train. same difference, really :,)
I just started watching, if NL passes up the legion of wax again I'm going to combust
Also what is this madman talking about sentient is pog
He's historically had a bad habit of unconditionally playing his champion in the back, which is the exact opposite of how you should use the Sentient
Nl I just want to apologize for any negative comments I've left recently. I was feeling some sort of way and I was taking it out on you which is wrong and I am sorry for that. I love 2020 no. Keep up the great work
That second awoken build with the rage on slay for the floor hellhorn units is a very strong combo
Forgetting Daze on the top floor multiple times.
Doing the Burnout play on a non-burnout unit multiple times.
NL did I ever tell you the definition of Insanity?
Very Pogged for a spiked awoken run tho!
The spike + regen combo is a relentless boss killer but you need to supplement it with something that can deal with the mooks that only attack once.
Hey Northern. Nice job on both plays. You have given me new ideas to work with that arent necessarily crazy powerful archetypes. There was something good going on with the reform and draw your entire deck on your first play through. I think that deserves more experimentation.
The Pogs are raining from the sky
Can’t believe this man took so long to use spike a lot of the awoken cards benefit from it. I actually won my first run when I was spiked outta my gourd.
The pigs are blessed today
Pigs are always very blessed.
take a shot for every time NL forgets about the daze effect on the top floor
Honestly anytime I see him pick up a lot of cards he hasn't made gold yet I get a little excited and very scared for the run
Great playing, nothing more can be said really, this was one of the more better runs cause I didn't know what to play most of the time and had to rely on your skill.
Imagine if he hadn't skipped right through the sting/draw consume card with clipped wings and had gotten the sting relic at the end. It was really obvious that he wasn't going to be able to clear waves well enough by ring 6 because he never took any actual burnout units to replace the dregs, and removed his tomb unit instead.
2 minutes into. But I have to say, everytime the starting deck give me 2 descends I reload the run
and its a spike-regen run against the anti spikes-regen boss. How many times did that happened to me too?
That first run... only if you picked the other relic xD
Spikes is absolutely doable, but not with buff/debuff Seraph. When you see that at the beginning you have take a different approach.
Dude that was a really well built deck, it would’ve won if you had any other Seraph
A previous tip that comes to play again. Do not leave creatures with 0 attack when you can upgrade them!!!
I skip to the end so I can meme about NL's performance before I've even watched the video in a desperate bid for the attention I lack in real life
These 160 health birbs are the bane of spike builds, I had to learn it the hard way too. You need to have a big DPS unit or spell handy or just lose to them. If your second clan isn't Hellhorned or Stygian, these are hard to come by. Bramble Lash is exactly what you're looking for in this situation, but it's not guaranteed.
You're the only channel I scream at my screen lol, stay pogged
For those final two plays, you might have gotten some mileage out of Stinging your own Thorned Hollow. Then Restoration Detonation would have dealt 50 damage to the front unit, killing it and letting your units attack the back enemy that was the real threat.
Spike build on a debuff final boss is just instant RIP.
man if nl had gone for the unit enhancers more often. think how easily he could have handled some of those waves with double strike units or with his tanks having +25 health each
or giving battlestone to awoken hollow so it doesn't instantly die after being sneezed on. He had the opportunity to do so as well.
Im not sure if you are in the know or have adressed this, but you can scroll on the map screen to see what lies beyond the current "floor" (all the way to the end actually), so you can plan ahead. Really useful if you wanna base a decision on what lies ahead (minion/spell upgrades, hellvents etc.)
I think I have more wins with Awoken than any other Clan. The trick to the Sentient is to use it as what it is: a tank. Just keep it healthy, and take the draw upgrade if you can (it's better to take it as the second upgrade imo). Spikes or Rejuvenate are equally good imo, you just have to build around them and take units that also benefit from it (Thorned Hollow for example is a lot better if you're focusing on spikes with a little healing where Awoken Hollow is better with a pure healing setup).
Sometimes it is what it is. You put up a great fight
Going spikes into Seraph the chaste was probably not super smart, especially without heavy hitting dps behind your tanks
I watch NL's monster train videos every day but I have absolutely no idea how the game works, he might as well be talking gibberish
Don’t worry neither does NL
Oh baby a spikes build run? Is it my birthday?
No Monster Train yet - watches NL's Isaac run - leaves comment - goes to home screen - "YES" time to watch Monster Train.
Enjoyable video, but alas, I remember the days where NL was going the "only 2 units per floor at most" challenge mode.
Can we talk about how NL learned how to jump cut?
Spikes is pog. The thinnest deck I've ever made was a 13 card spikes deck with the spreading spores. Granted, it was covenant 0 I think, but still fun.
I understand the motive of not upgrading units but if you stop and think about it: You only upgraded on first floor
Having a great time
This was an entertaining episode.
Pogs rainin from the sky like some kinda etc.
I wanted the animus to die early and return in the second floor with the lady, but hey I can't say anything. There is a lot for me to learn from the masterful plays.
"And now the true test... hold fast, or expire?"
I miss the times when Sentient was always in the back =/
You take that back
Love the series NL!
That was a pretty good boss killing setup you got though.
I was really excited to see a spreading spores with surgestone combo at 46:05. O well, guess I gotta buy the game myself. You got me NL lol
at 46:46 it says it isn't eligible. The game jebaited me. NL was right the whole time.
@@SanosukeSagara55 magic power only buffs healing and damage, doublestack is what you'd want
btw NL +10 Magic power from the shop is really good on restoration detonation because it doubles its damage with each upgrade and more heal.
You skipped past these in the shop every time with lots of extra gold.
Oh my god the daze was so good
This is a man that shouldn't have wicklash
Great Awoken Run NL!
god damn, you had a nice deck there, which I think had a win in it. upgrading the sting with 20 spellpower was IMHO the most eggregious error, should've put that on the restoration detonations that would've saved you a lot of trouble on the higher floors.
p.s. I made a typo up there but I'm leaving it in.
Stay pogged brother.
Enelle Restoration Detonation works way more when they have room to heal, had you used restoration detonation on the last turn instead of awake, you could've lived because of the artifact that heals for the same amount healed you were doing 60 damage per restoration detonation.
I need NL to start getting into anecdotes like OSTE.
When NL said u knew the champion was a tank because it did no damage my strawman self brought up healers and buffers
If you had that spell from the first run, and theres a unit who give spikes double dmg...gets insane. I had a run where every hit did 200+ dmg and spell did 2000
"I think I'm going to die, our pyre is going to take too much damage"
Continues to play every card that could help on the bottom floor...
Nice attempt though, should really get at least one dps unit behind each tank, especially because you took capacity and always had tons leftover.
I was dying at that. Like he had that relic that does dmg on heal to front unit. He knows he is about to lose, but doesnt slow himself down enough to think his way out of it and plays like its any other turn.
Am I weird to structure my runs around what the boss is going to do...? This run made me question reality, like when was he going to realize....
New NL upload. Feeling Daazed
Doop dee doo just here to tell NL keep up the good work and also for the algorithm
Remember that time NL dunked hard on a person in chat who tried to tell him about the new (then) highest speed setting. NL still doesn't know about it
I’m pogged out of my ass for some more monster train
I feel like NL hasnt read restoration detonation since it was buffed like a month ago and is ignoring what it actually does. Treating it like a heal with minor damage attached when its actually a nuke with minor heal attached...especially if you up it.(+10 power = +50 damage)
i think draw might be the worst champion ability, it kills holdover, and can flood you with blights.
The full spikes build is so much fun. That end was truly heartbreaking, with a slightly different draw order I think you had an easy W.
After calculating, processing and testing( don't ask me how ). He could have won if he put every heal on the Thorned Hollow ant the end. Because the pyre then will take 1 less hit and will survive one hit and kill the Gilded Wing.
Cool story
NL tou can check the logbook in the options to see possible drafts during a run
You are dazed NL! ^^
3 streak? 3 streak?
Pog. Can't for the sweet miss plays :D
