When your coolers cost more than your kayaks.
ManScoutsofAmerica you’re assuming I bought it new! In fact they were used and almost as expensive as the kayaks haha
If those are the Coleman brand they are like $30 at Walmart rn :)
The Texas Hill Country is a beautiful place for sure. Nice little trip and thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful day my friend.
Backroad Freedom it sure is! Spoiled to have it 3 hours away
@@GatewoodBrown I go down and visit my brother North of San Antonio. Always have a great time.
Backroad Freedom that’s some beautiful country up there. San Antonio is a great spot
I love your videos. I spend as much time on the Medina, the San Marcos, and the Guadalupe as I can and I might have a tip you will like. Camping in tents, I rarely use stakes or pegs, instead I take sandbags and fill them with rocks or sand (whatever is available). In the morning, empty each bag, roll them up, and stuff them in with the tent. I do this so my ultralight backpacking tents (fairly expensive) never get blown away when I am not bedded down in them. Good luck and keep up the great content.
That is spot on advice! I too have stopped bringing stakes and rarely use a rain fly. But when I have to I’ll just find a big rock and tie around it. Or a fallen branch. Those rocks are impossible to stake in! Haha
I would love to come along for these ventures never been to Texas but damn these videos sure make it inviting!,,,
Texas is a wonderful place to paddle! Just have to find the stretches less paddled and set out on an adventure.
Making great memories for sure 😊👍
Found your channel recently. Awesome videos! I am from the San Antonio area and starting to kayak. Your videos got me excited to get out on the water soon.
atreinies1 thanks my man! I’m so jealous all these spots are in your backyard. I’ve got to drive from Houston, but still totally worth it!
Atreinies1 I too have just started kayaking. I'm about 45 minutes south of you. Not very tech savvy, but if you can contact me maybe we can do some kayaking together. If your in S.A you aren't far from a good starter river.
Looks like my dream trip
Travis Halford it was our first go at it, but still an amazing trip
looks like a blast. id like to float that river one day. I look forward to more videos.
Daniel Dring thanks so much for the kind words! Let me know if you ever have questions about the river when it comes time to paddle. I should be uploading another kayak camping video this weekend. Ironing out the final details
Love it!
Cheers dude!
As a Native Texan, love your videos.
That’s awesome to hear Byrd! We have a special state
😍😍😍 so inspiring
Thank you!
Ah, this is so rad.
TheNestFam thanks for giving it a watch! Rad for sure
You have to start somewhere! Beautiful river, keep going on kayak trips. Work your way up to the Devil's river, then Pecos River then finally the Magnus opus of Texas rivers, The Rio Grande. You will have to get real kayaks though.
Casey Ramsey agreed! Fortunately I’ve been on 5 or so kayak camping trips so we’ve almost got it down to a science now. I’d love to do the devils and pecos, just have to get over that long drive. I’ll be posting a new video covering our fall trip to this same river in a few days. Stay tuned! The videos are getting more manageable to watch haha.
Nice Video. Makes me wanna come to Texas and paddle that river.
Lol, 54 freezing cold. I appreciate your videos, much live from Minnesota.
Ha! We handle cold like you all handle extreme heat. Just a trade off. I appreciate the well wishes, you take care as well!
Alex must have an awesome sense of balance. You sure make it look like the great time I'm sure it is.
We enjoyed the struggle and are left with wonderful memories!
Gorgeous footage as always. Crystal clear waters. Nice, ty
Thank you! The water out there is some of my favorite in the whole state. It’s enchanting to paddle through
@@GatewoodBrown I love water, and I love kayaking. I had hand surgery, then right after that, I thought it would be a good idea to get a spiral tib/fib fracture with an ankle fracture as a side order of excitement.
My friend told me, you need to forget about yaking this year lol.😑
Wow I’m so sorry to hear about that series of injuries! Definitely take time to heal but fortunately kayaking is low impact on the body. You’ll be back out there in no time
@@GatewoodBrown I hope so, it's addictive lol
The waterways in Texas are amazing
They really are! Very underrated
Awesome .
Thanks Spencer!
Not trying to be a snob or anything, but you fellas would enjoy the paddling a lot more on a good sit-on-top yak. Those stadium seats are nice. Good video!
BigDog Trump2020 thanks for stopping by! I recently picked up a hybrid with one of those stadium seats. Such an upgrade!
I guess you picked some bananas along the river? LOL! They just magically appeared, about 3 minutes into the video.
About the only thing we'd pluck and consume from a river are cold beers! haha I brought those bananas and they got absolutely destroyed lol
Dude, I love the plastic walmart kayaks, you can drop them, throw them, bang them on rocks, flood them, drag them across the rocks and drain them on land! They get scuffed but you don't care, you only paid less than $250 for them. Those $1000 touring fiberglass kayaks, all the time worried about scratching them.
You mentioned something about Texas law and camping on the river -vs- private property. Do you mind to tell me what you know? I’m interested in canoeing the rivers of Texas and would be interested in where I can camp and where I cannot. Thanks
Papa Jeff If you google ‘Texas Navigability Laws’ there are about 3 links that provide some great, straightforward material on the topic. That should clear up all questions you have about where to camp
Look up the Jackson coosa!!!,short and sassy....great for small rivers....seat even comes out as a camp chair....they rock....or the Jackson Kilroy...that’s what I have
Oooo! This one is really pretty and the rapids look pretty doable to a big chicken like me. :D
This river is amazing! This was at 40cfs of flow so the rapids were pretty tame. Lots of dragging though!
Haha, the party barge 👌
No doubt! He had the best boat for sure
"Oh look there's a snake"...no reaction and doesn't show it. Then, "oh look there's ducks!", and shows it. Ummm....
Morkus Morkus yeah that buddy is skittish. Was probably just a cypress tree root lol
Looks like Paradise
That place sure is!
Gatewood Brown Cool videos man keep doing what you’re doing 👍
Jack McElligott will do my man! There’s so much to explore
Me my sister and her bf just got into going to places to rent kayaks and all that but we been trying to get our own to start camping and kayaking
I think you’ll really enjoy the camping part. Just make sure all your at risk gear is in a dry bag!
@@GatewoodBrown I just seen u replied to me and I didn’t think u would lol also I just ordered on Amazon a dry bag and a dry backpack also ordered a tent and all that first aid I’m just really exited to be going out side and not staying in and gaming like I use to all the time it’s nice to see the beautiful water I love it
Thanks for these awesome videos. I bet my blow up kayak I use on the lake wouldn’t last on those rocks 😏. Keep up the great content. 👍🏻
Jimmy Hoskins my pleasure! I’m super glad you’ve enjoyed them. Funny you say that. One of the guys showed up with an inflatable and then panicked, ended up buying that blue sun dolphin from Walmart right before launching 😂
I’m a river rat too. Grew up on the Blanco! Great videos 👍
The Blanco looks epic!
Love the video man! Looks alot like our crow wing river in Minnesota.
Thanks! I've never paddled up in the far North. I'll have to check out the Crow Wing RIver, bet it is beautiful!
Started watching your videos and I want to do the same thing now! What locations did you put in and take out? And is any piece of land on the river legal to camp on?
Michael Churchman thanks! For this trip we put in at a park in Medina and took out at a park along highway 16. Just look for highway or road crossings to enter the river and you’ll be good. Check out Texas navigability laws, they have a great write up about what constitutes the riverbed and what sort of recreation you can do in the riverbed.
Gatewood Brown Thank you very much! Love the videos, keep it up!
Michael Churchman yessir, more to come for sure. I’m heading out on a trip in early April with several more kayak camping trips planned this spring/summer. Stay tuned!
As long as it is the bed of the creek river or lake bed you can camp on it
The kayaks did well. You dont need a $3,000 kayak. You could use more leg room.
Rather B Fishing you’re spot on. Although I’ve moved on from this one, there’s still no need to get a top of line kayak for my needs.
Would love to see Devils River and the Neuces as well!
Those are on my shortlist. Quick question, which is the best part of the nueces?
@@GatewoodBrown Chalk Park Bluff is breathtakingly beautiful with a hidden lagoon and massive cliffside...if you time the moon just right, it tracks perfectly across the ridge too. Barksdale is a good place to launch as well.
Harvey survivor here who trail runs over at Lake Charlotte dragging my yak through the hill country every chance I get so needless to say, you're cinematography is Amazing!!! Am truly inspired to kayak/camp now! Anyhow, thanks for these vids...looking forward to more!
M M right on thank your for the tips! Do you know what level of flow is optimal for the chalk park section? Looks like there are tons of great camping locations based on google earth.
Thanks for sharing your story, very similar to mine! Makes my day to hear stuff like that. Getting out to the hill country and bouncing around rocks is so much fun. Luckily I’ve been able to restart my hobby of making videos too. Cheers to that!
@@GatewoodBrown this is a great resource! southwestpaddler.com/docs/nueces.html
Am not certain of the flow but would guess late summer would be it's lowest. Was at Barton Creek a couple weeks ago which is completely dry so you would have to check the flow before going to prevent so much portage.
Anyhow, keep up the good work...your videos truly capture Texas in all it's glory!
Nice video guys! You’ve discovered our family summer hang out place.
It is an incredible place. Somehow it seems to fly under the radar too!
It's good that it flies under the radar 😉
Great video, brother! The scenery there is breath-taking! I'm gonna check out your channel, and possibly sub!
Catfish Corry thanks for the feedback! If your RUclips name says anything about your hobbies, we saw some big ole catfish along the way. You could definitely catch your fill out there
That’s hilarious seeing a grown up in a Aruba 8 lmao
fbenton2 definitely! Looks a little wobbly right? By the way, I’m working on another Medina Kayak Camping video, it’ll be uploaded real soon. Keep an eye out!
Gatewood Brown yea buddy I enjoy watching them!
awesome video. I'm hoping to kayak the Medina this year. is that a camp ground yall camped at or a spot on the river that is legal?
Thanks! I'm uploading another Medina video right now so be sure to check it out. This was not a camping spot, just a legal location within the riverbed.
Really enjoy watching your stuff fellas. We needa link up sometime!
Poor Boyz Outdoors thanks my man! I’ll let ya know if we ever head out your way
Parabéns, me amarro nas imagens de vocês, muito Show!!!
Muito obrigado. este rio é um lugar especial para nós!
Now I truly am impressed with your desire to answer everyone! Good on ya.
Handyman MLewis google translate came in clutch! You all are awesome to watch these videos so I enjoy spending the time to reply to everyone. Even the trolls! Haha
Really enjoyed this. What editing program do you use? Nicely done.
Great Lakes Paddle Club thanks! I use Final Cut Pro X to edit. Check out some of my more recent videos to see some more capable editing haha. Thanks for stopping by!
I need friends in Texas to do this with! Lol I’m in Houston
Tune into local kayaking groups!
Feel silly asking this. Iv been your videos all day. I’m determined to kayak camp one day.
My question is how do you get back to your starting point? Having trouble understanding that part. Even after watching several of your trips.
Take multiple cars and leave one at the top, and one at the bottom!
I’d come back in febuary
What kind of jalepeno cheese sausage do y'all eat? Would be awesome if it was from Opa's Smoked Meats in Fredricksburg, TX
I’ll have to try that someday! We’ve been buying the kiolbassa brand from HEB. It’s a San Antonio based sausage company

Korea's weather is sunny.
It's raining, but it's so healing when you watch our RUclips video that feels good. When I communicate a lot in the future, I applaud the pleasant video.
I am a Korean RUclipsr. Focuses on dance and music. Come play.
Just getting into y’all’s channel but I do at least one different Texas river every year next I want to do the upper and lower pecos would love to see some content
Man the Pecos is on our list of places to go. Looks amazing
I have family with a retreat on lake amistad in rough canyon if y’all plan on doing anything out that way let me know it’s a much shorter paddle in the lake to our place than the boat launch I’m sure my family would love to have y’all
If you are coming off the devils that is the pecos comes in to a different part of the lake

Sweet hammock what’s kind is it
Jaime Ramirez Eno Double Nest!
Is your audio straight from GoPro or an external mic ?
Kenneth Wimmers straight from the GoPro Hero 4 Black. I thought the GPH 4 had a better mic than the 5 and 6 due to the water proof housing. Supposedly there are improvements on the 7’s mic but I’m still testing that out.
Sorry to disagree, but the devils river is the most pristine in Texas. You should do that trip.
To me the Pecos is more pristine than the devils. So is the Rio grande. But the devils is definitely on my short list!
Alex is brutal on his yak by getting into it in shallow water and then scraping along the rocks to get into deeper water. Ouch!
I’ll pass that along time him! Haha yeah this was our first trip and we definitely weren’t the best at anything really. The shallow rivers out in the hill country are very tough on kayaks
@@GatewoodBrown I now have 6 kayaks and have learned from experience (since 2005) that dragging a yak across rough surfaces takes its toll. A scarred yak bottom will hurt hydrodynamics, thus you work harder and becomes more vulnerable to leaks. Hope to see you on the water.
Leo V yeah we try to avoid dragging if at all possible. Sometimes the dragging is worth it just to paddle though. I hope to see you out there as well!
What was the flow when you did this trip? Enjoy your videos btw!
Michael Longfellow thanks! I’ve enjoyed making them. Flow was around 45cfs on the Bandera Gauge
Interested in this but confused as to how ppl will be miles from the car and just set up camp so where do the tents and food go?
Dry bags! You have to pack light
Gatewood Brown can tent and food fit in dry bags?
Absolutely! Get at least a 20L dry bag and a 1 to 2 person tent
So you always park one truck at the start and an other one at the finish?
Where did yall launch from? I'm planning a on going down that river soon.
Royal Wood Working Moffett Park in downtown Medina. Right there off Paterson road. Another good launch is Peaceful Valley Road
Thanks for the info! Udaman!
cool river
Definitely Frank! Can't wait to get back out there
By the way iridium stoves rock!!!!!!!
How shallow can that Aruba eight go
I’d say 6” without bumping the bottom. It all depends on body weights and the amount of gear you’ll be hauling.
Is the water cold?
Sans Undertale not during summer!
GPS coordinates please!
It’s hard to give access points since flow rates really change the characteristics of a river. It’s best to talk with local outfitters and guides before your trip. They’ll be able to steer you towards the best section to paddle.
Haha! DUCCKKKK !!
Yes!
Feel sorry for the guy stuffed into that kayak
Me too! I avoid that type of kayak like the plague haha
Check out a good friend of mine on YT. look for Trip Smith. Your videos are good.
Ray Down South thanks for the encouragement my man! Trip is a great resource and his videos certainly encouraged me to go on some adventures. Are you going to RockaDock?
you guys need underquilts
We have some for warmer weather, but nothing to cover the winter temps!
Gatewood Brown well I’m in San Antonio and hammock camp often anything around 60f and below at night makes an under-quilt necessary. I’ve camped in the Dry Frio in winter with temps as low as 12F in my hammock with a down under quilt
I am from India, one day I definitely visit there by the help of Jesus Christ and God.
Lame
ABsolutly61161 totally agree!
Nope
