Worth mentioning when talking about intonation is that tone color is very important. If you have a bright tone with no overtones any deviation from perfect intonation will sound like shit. If you have plenty of overtones you can be allowed a little more wiggleroom without it sounding out of tune to the ear
Good as far is it goes. Ultimately you have to develop your ear as well. Not a word was said about that. There's so much you can learn practicing with a drone. I hope more intonation videos are coming!
That comes with time and practice. But using a tuner for personal practice ensures that you get off to a good start (e.g. in this case from a concert pitch of 442 and not something else) and provides a solid basis (i.e. practicing in tune) for developing your ears. Good idea, too, with the drone.
My understanding is that one of the universe’s great jokes on us is that the laws of physics make it physically impossible to build a musical instrument that is in tune with itself. It’s not so much compromising intonation vs usability or playability, as that if you make some notes better in tune that will make others out of tune. You can be in tune with a tuner and still be out of tune with the other instruments who are playing (even though they may also in tune with a tuner). So in an ensemble at least you just have to listen, and hope everyone else is listening too.
I'm actually learning that song rn! I've been working on all of the audition music for the New York Philharmonic, so one day I can hopefully apply to an orchestra/philharmonic. I just got back into playing. Unfortunately, the instrument I'm renting currently, the previous owner broke it in half so it's been glued back together 😭
On soprano clarinet - low chalumeau register tends flat, yet it's difficult to bring these notes up using any of the available options. Any tips for playing this range of the instrument in tune?
it shows that you can tune with the ensemble fluently, sure, they cant tell that yo play out of tune by yourself, but the moment you play out of tune with an ensemble, its really noticeable.
RUclips comments can be difficult for a creator to see, I recommend if you contact him on his website for a higher chance of him seeing your request. Also include the composer.
Hear that Brass? It's you guys es job to be in tune. You too strings. We are perfect in woodwind section.
🙄😂🤣😂👏😁
Hey, the return of the black bass clarinet!
Wow that cover of the swan made me yearn for my clarinet playing days- you did such a nice job, & im glad you’re still making videos.
As my prof used to say, "Play with your ears."

OR…. Too dark w/No overtones or colour or projection whatsoever…. I hear it a LOT on the internet these days. Frustrating
@@emjay2045 Sure I guess. The point was that a larger amount of overtones help intonation.

But your ear will likely develop naturally over time as you learn to tune your instrument with the aid of a tuner.
@@Rik77 "Likely" means leaving it to chance. Not a good bet. Ultimately we tune with our ears, not our eyes.
Love the Title!!! Explode my room with laughter. 🤣
great video, thanks!
Lol that your paper shredder is conveniently RIGHT BEHIND YOU!
😂

Beautiful sensitive Playing 👏👏👏 bravo sir
Great video. Hope this will make my dreadful vintage more in tune.
The written middle B on my alto clarinet is quite sharp, while the throat B-flat and A below it are quite flat, so I have to keep that in mind.
love to see a melda tuner hehe

☝🏽😳
What are the words to your song? 😅
Great video!
I wonder if the judges will have their tuners out in equal temperament or just intonation
I fought the “battle of intonation” throughout my career for nigh on to 30 years. Where were you when I needed a bs. Teacher?
Are you going to do a video on the ClariMate from Buffet?
What is that desk in stand please? Some tablet? Can you mention type? Considerable big.. Thanks for video..
Great video!
where can I get that music sheet from?
Many many thanks!

Is that a black painted Blashaus neck? 😱
anybody know what tuner app Michael’s using?
Intonation is a personal problem that people like to offload to the instrument.
YES!!!!! I preach this to jazz players. Can you play a slow melody in tune and in time as as it was originally composed???
This would be very interesting but the speech is essentially inaudible and there's no cc's.
Why do they need a tuner on the audition? Are You expected to play for robots? If a human cant tell if you are out of tune then why does it matter?

what app are you using in this video for the tuner?
It's a plugin for Logic Pro on the mac -- not a separate app.
What happened to the RH Low D key?
It is still there.
The plating is wearing
Actually it came that way. I consider it a “birthmark”

I too play bass clarinet mainly, though I'm considered a utility clarinet by most people
