    Great episode about Italian bike royalty. I love my Wilier Super Leggera. Pity the origin of the Wilier name was not explained. W.I.L.I.E.R named is derived from this acronym “W I’Italia Liberata e redenta” translated from Italian means “Long Live Italy,liberated and redeemed”. So I’ll see your Bianchi royal endorsement and raise you with Wilier national pride.

    Myself and a friend rode up here in 1991 on fully loaded touring bikes, as part of a long European bike tour on the way to that years PBP. We were aiming for Aosta, and a hotel keeper in Pinarello had assured us that the 'new' road past the top would take us down to Aosta. Well were we in for a surprise!, as the road ended and a walking track of sorts, awaited us. So as we stumbled down the 'tracks' we thought of many different ways we would punish that hotel keeper if we ever crossed his path again...
    Fantastic scenery though, so it wasn't all bad.

    • @alertbox
      @alertbox 3 года назад +1

      You are absolutely correct. At the top of Nivolet there is a track for four miles, I walked about 2.5 miles of it. The track deteriorates and at the end there is a steep decent 500m down the mountain side to Port which is a village about 20 miles from Aosta, or about half that as the crow flies. The only vehicles allowed down the track are military ones, according to the tour guide.

    Pinarello is magic. If you are going for are high end bike you want to race, I would choose the F10 (F12). It is the all around weapon. Whether climbing, mixed, flat, descending, handling. The Pinarello does it all. And with the F12 it is Even more aero and more comfy (28mm clearance).

      I think I saw it the first time in 2012, and it inspired me to finally do the Granfondo Stelvio Santini medium route in 2018. I have done mountainous rides before, but as a Clydesdale, I was definitely out of my element. I finished DFL, but it was not only one of my best rides ever, but a lifetime highlight. As stunning as the scenery is, the people of Bormio are even more wonderful. I can't wait to go back next year and do it again!

    Wonderful. By the way, the music at the beginning is southern, Mediterranean music, a music totally foreign to the Alps. It's the same if you show Brazilian beaches with Irish Riverdance music, or black nude Congolese dancers dancing with Russian Kalinka.
    Italy is (was) a country only on the maps. North Italy and South Italy are two different countries. The Alps, Bianchi, Colnago, Campagnolo, Pinarello, Wilier, Scapin, Atala etc are from North Italy.

    Well if I hadto choose an Italian super bike I will never afford then I’d prefer Bianchi’s Specialissima with 12sp Super Record and Bora 35’s.

    Just got a Pinarello Dogma F10 with Most Talon bar and eTap!!! Simply amazing. I know that Campy is Campy but SRAM is so far ahead with wireless. Cleaner, no wires at all and AXS is soooooooo fast.

    Holy moly... This is SPECTACULAR. How in the world are you going to top this? Hollywood-level cinematography on a RUclips channel? All those others should just pack up and go home. Well done, ladies and gentlemen! (And, again, who in their right mind could give this a thumbs down?)

    Funny that Ollies said "italian bikes not as successful in the world tour as they were used to", while every grand tour in 2020 was won by an italian bike with rim brakes.

    Bravi! Best damn video of the year, amici. While the Italian bicycles were all "handsome" and the banter as smart as always, it was the Italian landscape, the road, the climb, that became the star. Breathtaking. (And nice cinematography, GCN mates.) The star, as always--ITALIA.

  • @mikemarinojax

    Major props to Ollie for his Charlie Croker impression. It looked like that climb was indeed a "Self-Preservation Society"
