Fascinating. A lot of youtubers would edit out all that detail for fear of being boring. Thanks for leaving it in. I'll probably watch this a few times. A+ vid.
This is an awesome example of why it's always worth paying for experience. 👍 I would have made it 1/8 the way through the teardown before losing a small part and end up buying a new shock. 😣
I’ve done this rebuild before, but it took me way longer and was a lot more frustrating. I wouldn’t have touched the cartridges either, which were the main issue.
Great video and I appreciated all the details of the breakdown and the explanation of it all. Most videos leave that stuff out so this was awesome to watch and I'm saving it to rewatch!
LOL!!! One of my first 3 rides I've done on my Jeffsy Carbon when I bought it a couple months ago, was the first half of this video. In the forest. Matte Black Beaut. First carbon bike. So, crazy stressed about big ass rocks.. Came off like twice :D Shat myself with the frame hitting those rocks :D :D months later, bike is sending harder, and crashing bigger. Faith in carbon has been instilled. This video does slight justice to the size and awesomeness of this trail. GNARLY ASS TRAIL!!!!!
this is so rad because i live in auburn and had my shock rebuilt by mike. i also have an internship at auburn bike shop and got to meet him when he was talking to Curtis. didn't know u lived so close to me
yea actually tomorrow i am going to order a 2018 norco range A1 and am super stoked to get my first long travel bike cause i have been riding my 100 mill travel cross country bike that i use to race and am super stoked to have a bike i can just whip around and such
Revs me too, at first I thought that was just the way the shock sounded, then it started getting louder. I’m having my bike shop send it back for a warranty. I didn’t know it was a “thing” with these shocks
They're very new but yeah it does seem to be a recurring theme. I've got mine back from SilverfishUK now and have had a couple of rides out without issue. I can see a recall coming for the DPX2's. Great shock otherwise though :)
Bro didnt even realize you are in my area! I'm looking at the trail vid and I'm like wait I know this trail!! Description says Auburn Ca haha! Find me on the trails LoamLicker!
@@tommyv4980 loam Licker is my alias. Loam is the type of ground surface in-between tacky and dry. When you are new and crash you tend to eat loam or lick loam. Hence LoamLicker.
Nice. I really love the way my X2 performs, but I'm seriously bummed that mine only lasted 9 months before developing the exact same problem, requiring a rebuild. I'm not OK with needing to spend $200 on a rebuild every 9 months where my other Fox shocks have done fine for 2-3 years before developing any problems. And I don't ride anywhere near your level, so kinda worried about the durability.
9 months in between service intervals is a pretty long time, so I'd say that's pretty reliable! Service intervals are based off of hours of ride time, so your results may differ.
Sure. I do ride a lot, that is true. I used to do the basic service on my RP32 and my CTD myself regularly, but the X2 is beyond my basic shop skills. I guess that's the price we pay for such excellent performance from an air shock.
Awesome vid. How are the rebound and compression cartridges removed from the housing? Looks like they might simply unscrew. I don't have my X2 in front of me yet and it's hard to tell from the video. Thanks
Cool dude! Is it possible to make a setup video on Float X2. Havent found one on RUclips. Ill be having it on my Rallon and since it will be my 1st full sus bike, it would be really helpful.
Suspension set up is pretty complex, I’m not the one who can really explain it best. Watch some of the Tuesday tune videos. Get the base settings from fox and tune from there.
for light load applications like BMX I wonder if air rather than oil is way to go God/JBM. bc it seems trying hard to keep air out mayb we should just put air in instead. Bike u hve to ck air in tires than shocks then off u go easy done.
Cool recap. That just confirms my STRONG belief that mortal garage mechanics shouldn't try to service suspension. They make it look easy, but then when you just try tear it down, you don't even know what parts unscrew from the others. Two options. Try it yourself and end up shipping it off in pieces in plastic bags, or send it there in the first place. :-)
Theres simple suspension service that anyone can do, like air sleeve service and lower service. Typically forks are pretty easy to service. However, anything to do with the dampers on shocks should be left to professionals.
Agreed...and I think it can extend the life between rebuilds if you are consistent with it. I am comfortable with dropping the lowers and getting clean oil on board, and replacing the seals and dust wipers. Same for simple shock maintenance. When it's something wonky like your shock...or maybe your fork not extending fully, or no dampening...routine service isn't going to remedy it. I have always thought it was funny when companies like Fox use hours of riding time as their guideline. I ride with some guys that would work the suspension harder in one day of riding then some others would in two months!
Can you point at exact time - where is the root cause of cavitation is shown? Was it because of small o-ring in cartridge; or because of those metall shims; or what??
Trail Peek but to change that o ring 6:34 do we need to disassemble whole shock? Or we can just pull out that cartridge? (it's one with blue cap or one from piggy, i just don't see it clearly?)
Hm my Fox Float X2 2018 sounds not quiet as bad, but similar. Had it sent to Fox twice already for a rebuild. But the noice is always comming back after like 2-3 rides. Any suggestions about what i could do?
I would check with them and see if they are replacing all of the seals in the damper cartridges. Reusing the old ones will allow air back into the system.
Bom dia, you poderia fazer a manutenção do Shox vivid Air R2C 2012, pois o meu está com defeito, e não consigo consertar. the non adjustable kind of shocks won't work much/well for BMX bc wt is a major variable between riders but they sure hold up better. Less moving prts less shit to break. This thing seems designed to wear & fail & if u can service fine but seems it currently is more wear & fail then is called for.
The X2 is definitely a bit more complex than others, but most shocks are gonna be close. They all function in the same way and therefore have very similar architecture. Its the small details that differ from shock to shock.
How to determine which one Compression Cartridge does my 'Fox Float X2 2018 2-pos lever 200x57 (7.875x2.25) code DCHY' have? I see couple of them on www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=864

Super informative video, thank you! Incredible to get a such a detailed and knowledgeable explanation of part and procedures. Best wishes in 2018!

I'm stoked that you guys included riding footage and not just shots of the shock being serviced.
Very glad to see Andreani Italian suspensions tools & vacuum pumps are everywhere in the world ;)
Mike did a great job, clean ,neat and really experienced

Yes, I like nerding out on this stuff and wanted people to see how crazy the stuff inside your shocks are.
I ride a hardtail and still loved this video! Dude knows his stuff! Hopefully you give him some crazy business from this video. Awesome!
Nice to see a master at work.
Your mechanic is solid!
Rad choice to make this video. Super informative and fun to watch. Tough to do both well. I'll check him out when I service our shocks.
That was really great to see the rebuild! Great video!
Wow, dude must worked for NASA, I got a DH x2 I'll be sending it to them for service. They know what there doing, great vid.

Didn't know there was anybody local that did this. I'm about due for service on my fork and shock. Definitely will look him up!
Awesome! Glad we could get the word out about Full Flow! Awesome service to have available locally

awesome and informative video! thanks for sharing that!!!
awesome video man! thanks for the info and will go visit fullflowsuspension one day!
Send in your stuff to Mike if it needs work
Please post a video about rebild shock Fox DPX2 :))
Super informative. I love knowing how to pull this stuff apart. Though I definitely wouldn't, I'd lose literately everything.
Now that’s a cool job to have! Nice video and nice Hightower bro 👌🏼
Sick video boys. More tech stuff please!!! Refreshing change from all the pov, not hating on pov but variety is the shizzzz
There will be more stuff with Full Flow. I think I'm gonna go back and rebuild my Fox Transfer. - Z
I've got a one-ride-old DPX2 that sounds like that, which is going back under warranty. Great vid though, it's always good to see what's inside :D
Yeah if it happened that quick, it’s probably a warranty issue.

Nice man! My shock just started feeling cavitated the other day. Seems like every month with these Float x2’s
Alex Chamberlin get DVO topaz. It’s lighter, and uses a bladder to prevent cavitation
Is the root cause of the cavitation a bad oring? Which oring do you change. Sounds like a great video on fixing this for your channel.
Awesome vid mate!
Thanks bru!
This is rad! Also cheers for hitting up tinkers yeeeeeow.
Tinkers rips!
Always important to make sure your mechanic can shred
So true
Very informative. Thanks to Trail Peek channel and fullflowsupspension.com.
Cool video nice trail
Good video! What year is your X2?
Great video

Where can I find the rubber pads and tools to do this job?
Hello, I have a fox float X2 from 2018 and I want to learn how to service it. Any idea where I could get a full set of tools to do the job? Thanks

My 2020 X2 lasted 2 months, my DPS thats half it’s size is still going strong.
How much was to rebuild your rear shock?

Aleš Papler watch Vorsprung suspension on setup. Steve is good.
hello can you tell me how the piston must be penetrated into the expansion tank please ;)
How much ride time did you have on that shock when it started to develop that noise? Mason says hi..........
I have no idea. A lot. Atleast 300
I found some blue oil in the air chamber. Is this normal and if yes, which oil and how much of it supposed to be in there?
for light load applications like BMX I wonder if air rather than oil is way to go God/JBM. bc it seems trying hard to keep air out mayb we should just put air in instead. Bike u hve to ck air in tires than shocks then off u go easy done.
Mine is still making squishy chirping sound even w can taken off.sounds like coming from pigging back? What could it be? Can piggy back be serviced?
How long were you riding this shock till this happened?
I just sent my shock (same one) to Fox for the same issue at 4 MONTHS OLD!?
Awesome video too!

Wold Be Great To Get Some discount if I mention that I saw your video... Lol.

Hi.. whats the rise of ur bar? Thanks
Keep them shafts lubed up!
How much did it cost you?
Is that climb switch just on/off? Can you put it halfway to something in between firm and soft?
It has two positions. On or off
Trail Peek what is it when its halfway, is it still considered fully opened?
Is that a DVO diamond fork?
Yep, trying it out for a few weeks.
this is the guy I want to rebuild all of my suspension
Hi. Can you tell how often this cavitation issue appears in X2?
For me about every 6 months. Thats if youre riding 3-5 times a week.
Trail Peek thanks for reply and great vid
Can you point at exact time - where is the root cause of cavitation is shown? Was it because of small o-ring in cartridge; or because of those metall shims; or what??

And maybe your friend knows the dimensions of that o ring?
www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=757 could you point at the problematic o ring ?
Probably wont need to disassemble the whole shock, but if you pull that assembly out you will need to bleed the shock.
Can i fill this float x2 with oil without a machine?
You should throw a DVO Topaz on there to match your fork.
what's common price of this service?
Meloman Rider pretty sure it’s anywhere from 150-200 ish. Fox will do it for 150.
Is Mike on a 429 Trail?

So far pretty good!
