  • Need to find some seasoned hardwood and the forecast is calling for snow! I hook up the GRIPO Kinetic Log Splitter to my Kubota B2601 Compact Tractor and head off into the forest on my quest! This time I test out the GRIPO on some 2-3 year old dry maple wood. Come along to see how well it splits firewood here in the outdoors and to see if I make it back to the cottage before the snowfall! Cheers!

    That splitter looks pretty cool. I agree with what others have said that the front stand looks kind of wobbly. I like the idea of leaving it hooked up to the hitch for stability. I think the side racks should be a little larger and maybe angled up a bit so the split wood doesn’t fall off of them.

    • @ravenfeather7087
      @ravenfeather7087 5 лет назад +1

      What happens of course is that most users will probably hold the wood in place as the ram travels toward and then into the piece being split and try to get their hand out of the way just before contact. Or hold the piece in place where they think their hands are safe. But of course he didn't show that. The danger would be too obvious.
      Say you want to split a piece of oak with a knot on the end of it. Do you think you'll be able to impale it on that wedge? Probably not. An oak knot is about as hard as iron. What you're going to end up of doing is holding it in place while the ram travels and smashes into it. And you'll try to get your hand out of the way before it gets between the wedge and the ram. Your timing better be perfect so don't get tired or distracted for even a split second.
      Hydrualic splitters require the activation lever be held during the power stroke of the ram. At least mine does. Slower but much safer in my opinion. Smash your hand and turn it into mush and you'll be even slower - maybe for the rest of your life.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Very good points Raven. I didn't show it because I wouldn't do it. The danger is clear as you point out above. No question that you don't want to play with fate with any splitter. I am sure you would agree that the safety guidelines that come with any splitter will tell you to remove your hand before the piston is in motion - whether it is a 3 or 11 second cycle time. The two other hydraulic splitters I used on the channel did. Like any tool, it is important to use common sense and be alert. I don't argue for a minute that it can be very dangerous if not operated properly. Just like any other tool. But your point about what some people might end up trying to do, is a good one. And a real one, I think. The hydraulic design is still my favourite overall because I also take comfort in the slower speed, however that kinetic was fast. Thanks for your thoughts. Cheers!

    @ronstandley5635 5 лет назад

    Good work keeping your FIL warm! I'm curious if those trays on the splitter ever hit the bottom of your carry-all when you're turning sharply? A simple fix would be a hitch bar with a small rise (or drop). This old retired guy sure enjoys watching someone else work for a change ;^)

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 лет назад +1

      Hey good evening Ron! And congrats on being retired. I am counting down the years but there are still too many. LOL. Funny thing. I thought when I was hooking it up, that I was going to have to take the tables off but surprisingly, the tables don't reach the back of the carry-all at all. Including when I turn. They rest several inches above the carry all height. So I was pleasantly surprised. All good! Thanks for watching and enjoy the good years. I see comments can be useful. No need to push the rounds up against the wedge ;protect your hand in the long run a small chance of some thing happening I.e. your hand being in the wrong place,may become a certainty.
    Otherwise this machine is safer than the hydraulic versions in that you engage it manually so your hands are safe

    what the hell is a face cord? in California the wood sellers are not allowed to use that term since there is no clear definition of what it is.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Good evening Jimmy. Thanks for watching and for the question.That's interesting. It is a common and well used measure here. And it is clearly defined. It is 1/3 of a Bush Cord, or Cord of wood. Usually cut at 16", which is also very common here, it is a pile that is 8 feet by 4 feet, with 16" length. (1/3 of a cord). People here purchase face cords or cords. Both are readily available for sale here. Hope that helps. Have a great weekend!

    works fine on good, straight wood, but throw in a piece of Mississippi red oak with a knot or fork, all new ball game

      Hey good evening STIHL 38. Good eye! LOL. I had to get out quick and didn't sharpen it. How did you see that? It looked like chips to me. LOL. Busted. But I know - i should be cleaning and sharpening after each use - not before each use. You got me. Thanks and all the best!

    Me thinks all that jammin' the logs into the wedge really isn't necessary and seriously, who are you warning with those flashers yourself, lol?

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 года назад

      Good questions Jimmy: the ram comes out hard and fast and I found that if I don't set the block into the wedge, that it will often get pushed on impact into a different position. This way it stays where I want it. A few folks have asked about the flashers - up here you are required by law to have them on when travelling on a road , which I have to travel on between properties. Also, there are several other folks who travel through my mile long driveway to get to their places, so generally I just put them on before I start driving so I don't forget to put them on when I get to the roads/driveway. Hope that explains it. Take care!

    It pains me to watch you jamb the wood into the splitter wedge, its moving slow enough to just hold it with your hand on top of the wood until it passes you by.

      Good morning Rodney. LOL. Me too. But I was pretty new at it and that ram moves awfully fast for me so I wanted to keep the old hands out. Thanks for watching and for the comment this morning. Have a great weekend!

    Why do people like to split wood into small pieces?
    A fire holds longer when pieces are left big/unsplit.
    [Been heating with wood 40+ years]

    • @GPOutdoors

      Hey good morning Papa. It is a good question. I split them small or larger depending on who I am collecting the wood for. Most of my neighbours are older, one is in his '80s now and so I kind of decide how small or large I split them to make it easier to be carried etc. Thanks for the question and for watching. Have a great week!

    You’re handling pieces to many times and a larger deck is needed as you’re having to pick up pieces 2x
